Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Kitchen closed at 661. Not too bothered I've gone slightly over, as I've plan 3 back to backs. @absolutelyknackeredcow I hope you manage to drink more water and feel better.

EatYourFive · 17/05/2022 18:43

Kitchen closed at 700 today, happy with that as had 425 yesterday and it was my first b2b in a while. Looking forward to tomorrow's breakfast; will be making some bread in the breadmaker, love waking up to the smell of freshly baked loaf!

harriethoyle · 17/05/2022 19:25

Kitchen closing here at 498 again. Fishcakes and stir fry are a good FD choice!

Toast and marmite for breakfast tomorrow and caesar salad for lunch 😊 see you all on Thursday!

harriethoyle · 17/05/2022 19:26

@EatYourFive I had to stop using my breadmaker because I couldn't stop eating the bread! 😂

harriethoyle · 17/05/2022 20:26

I am freaking starving 😂 I suspect I'll have a pre-bed or there's no way I'll sleep tonight...

EatYourFive · 17/05/2022 20:27

@harriethoyle I refuse to give up my breadmaker no matter what happens!😁

absolutelyknackeredcow · 17/05/2022 20:49

Well done my Tuesday fasters @EatYourFive @harriethoyle @Beautiful3

I'm kitchen closed on 650 - breakfast made for tomorrow already 😀
I'm fasting again on Friday - only 8 days til the holiday 😀

harriethoyle · 17/05/2022 21:29

Closing kitchen with an average of 652 over my B2B ! Might do a mini fast later in the week as we are off on our all inclusive next Weds.

sweetgingercat · 18/05/2022 01:34

Hi all, great to see everyone finish off their B2B. I can't remember what I ate yesterday but it was under 600 and today the kitchen closed at 661. It's amazing how I don't feel hungry at all really.

Tomorrow I'm going to have french bread and apricot jam. Yum!

EatYourFive · 18/05/2022 06:56

After two months of no progress/setbacks for various reasons (fairly bad covid, holiday, travel for work) I am happy to report a new record low weight this morning!! Only 0.1 kg below the previous record at the end of March but still something, hopefully this means I am finally back on track!

harriethoyle · 18/05/2022 07:00

Hurrah @EatYourFive! Plateau be gone 😁

Great new thread, thankyou

EatYourFive · 18/05/2022 07:20

Thank you @harriethoyle, it's a small victory but still feels good! Any overnight loss for you today?

absolutelyknackeredcow · 18/05/2022 08:12

Well done everyone on their losses! I'm two pounds down this am and only 2 lbs of goal with 8 days to go !
Smile

harriethoyle · 18/05/2022 08:57

@EatYourFive I've taken off 2.1kg of my week of indulgence bloat 🙈 another FD tomorrow should get me within touching distance of my target weight again 🤞🤞

sweetgingercat · 18/05/2022 09:48

Woohoo @EatYourFive off your plateau and on a roll!

KylieKoKo · 18/05/2022 13:52

Great news @EatYourFive
I am fasting today. I had a couple of glasses of wine last night which has made it a bit harder!
So far I have had a miso soup, a nectarine and some cottage cheese, I have a small piece of salmon with veg for later on.

CheshireSplat · 18/05/2022 15:37

I'm fasting today. Had 1/2 can tuna & 2 boiled eggs for lunch. Getting a bit peckish now but I made myself really concentrate yesterday on how amazing breakfast was, to try to get through this stage. It's worth it!!!!

harriethoyle · 18/05/2022 16:54

@KylieKoKo @CheshireSplat you can do it! shakes pom poms

CheshireSplat · 18/05/2022 20:08

Thanks @harriethoyle . I am just going to have a cup of tea then am closing the kitchen at 624 calories. Today's tea time upset was about 10 skinny oven chips when I was making the DCs' tea.

I'm only finishing week 2 but need to move away from eggs, have been having eggs for lunch and omlette for tea. Will look up the old 5:2 recipe thread.

harriethoyle · 19/05/2022 08:25

Morning all, any one with me today for my 3rd FD of the week?

OP posts:
KylieKoKo · 19/05/2022 11:08

Not fasting but I have some good news. I had about 6 weeks off diet and excercise because I went on holiday and injured myself. I had my first weigh in this morning and expected the worst but I've only put on a pound!

harriethoyle · 19/05/2022 11:44

@KylieKoKo that's brilliant - phew! A bullet dodged!

I've had some great work news that I've been waiting for, for WEEKS, and I'm fasting so I can't crack open the champagne tonight...! BOOOO! 😂It'll taste even better tomorrow...

OP posts:
sweetgingercat · 19/05/2022 12:45

Yes @harriethoyle I'm fasting today. So far I've had a cup of tea and a cup of sliced ginger and lemon in hot water. I'm going to have an egg shortly.

How are you getting on?
