Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

I am going to have to do a B2B next week as I have lunch plans on Wednesday and Thursday and DSDs are here Friday - Sunday and I don't like to model dieting and fasting to them. I am a bit scared!

I know the allowance is 650 a day but I am considering splitting the cals roughly 500/800 as I think it will be easier for me to know I have slightly more calories on the second day.

harriethoyle · 27/01/2022 14:41

@KylieKoKo that's exactly what I do sometimes. Basically it's 1300 across two days, split how you like as long as you have no more than 800 on either day

Fasting today too despite a bumping headache with this covid. Having a Tesco chicken tagine and cous cous for dinner. Been hard work today with two kids (one sick, one bouncing off the walls!) but glad I managed to get through it!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 28/01/2022 09:21

Poor you @emmsyg . the advice is generally not to fast when Poorly. Can you lay off a few days

No chance of a mini today. I'm starving after my massively active day. I know activity is good but it is counter productive in terms of fasting

harriethoyle · 28/01/2022 09:35

Made a cake last night to use up some black bananas in the fuit bowl: banana and dark chocolate. Oh my God. So good! Two slices last night whilst warm from the oven and one for lunch today. Am going to have to portion it up and freeze it for when my Dad's care home unlocks and take them to him for treats or I will eat the whole bloody thing this weekend!! It's not looking like a low calorie weekend AT ALL (steak tonight, pork belly tomorrow) so I will be paying for it on the scales on Monday I suspect... Blush

That’s me done until Monday now so hopefully will be feeling a bit better by then! Getting zero exercise in self isolation so not expecting much this week!

KylieKoKo · 28/01/2022 11:22

I maintained this week which is annoying but I had a big loss last week I guess it's only fair! I remember from when I was doing it last time that my weight loss wasn't linear. I'd maintain for even gain a bit then have a bigger drop and repeat the cycle. Does anyone else lose weight in this pattern?

Solderingon · 28/01/2022 11:44

@KylieKoKo I've not lost anything all month! Next month might be better. I've started lifting weights this month so I'm thinking that might be one of the reasons. But I'm going to be more careful on my NFD's during the week.
But absolutely it's never linear. And it's so easy to get disheartened isn't it?

KylieKoKo · 28/01/2022 15:58

@Solderingon when I started strength training I put on weight but looked slimmer which worried me but I have subsequently learnt that when you start using weights you muscles become slightly inflamed as part of the process of building which means water goes into them and weight training increases bone density which makes you heavier but protects you from the bone loss that comes with aging.

If you have stayed roughly the same weight you have probably lost fat.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 28/01/2022 16:04

Does anyone else lose weight in this pattern?

Yup. I record all my weights after each FD and it’s like a graph of a stock market crash Grin. Lots of little ups and downs, overall trend is down.

Me too. I have an Excel sheet and track my pre and post fast weights and have a line graph with line for pre and a line for post fast!
TheWayTheLightFalls · 28/01/2022 16:21

@KylieKoKo it’s very satisfying Grin. I’m up a lot in the middle of the night atm - I have a young baby - and I often weigh then after a FD, and then again in the morning. Best of two Wink.

Garysmum · 28/01/2022 18:29

I’m struggling through. Fast day today and 2 hours of intense aerobic activity. I exercise 6 days a week so always one bad clash day. Garmin says today calories burnt are 3600… normally I’d have a recovery shake. Today o had a cup of tea and 180 Calories of soup for lunch. I’m shakey!

Solderingon · 28/01/2022 19:32

@KylieKoKo I definitely do feel pretty inflamed the day after a session. I think I should have taken before photos, I might get DH to take some tomorrow morning. Just to have a different way of tracking progress.

@TheWayTheLightFalls - well done you doing this with a young baby! I waited until DS was well into toddler-dom.

@Garysmum wow. Im not sure my Garmin ever thinks I've burnt that much! What do you do out of interest? Have you had enough salt if you're feeling shaky?

Garysmum · 28/01/2022 20:02

@Solderingon well I’m heavy at 5’10 size 12 amd huge legs…. Can you guess what I do? Cycling! It uses my heart rate data collected over a year. Just checked and that’s based on me weighing a stone less than now, I upped my weight and it says I’ve burnt even more. Even if it’s a way out I think I must burn 2750 plus

harriethoyle · 28/01/2022 20:35

@TheWayTheLightFalls hahaha - mine looks exactly like this. Great description Grin

Really enjoying the weekend. Had a bacon and mushroom roll. Best day ever!

TheWayTheLightFalls · 30/01/2022 04:22

Signing in for a Sunday FD. As is usual for me, woke up to feed the baby and now can't sleep. I had lunch, coffee and cake yesterday around 3pm and haven't eaten since, which should give me a head start today. Planning miso soup with boiled egg and broccoli for lunch and some sort of curry with more broccoli for dinner. Anyone else fasting?

Beautiful3 · 30/01/2022 07:16

@TheWayTheLightFalls I'm impressed you're fasting today. I could never do the weekend, that's too hard-core even for me! Sundays the only day of the week, we have cake. Today's carrot cake! Good luck with your fast. I'm fasting tomorrow.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 30/01/2022 07:42

@Beautiful3 tbh I find the weekends quite stressful (I have young kids) so the options are eat everything in sight, or fast. Making a virtue out of necessity Grin. Good luck for tmrw.

easterdaffsx · 30/01/2022 11:01

Morning .Can I join please ?
I'm female, 11 st 4 and 5ft 3 . I need to lose 21 lbs amd I'm getting married so have the best motivation !
My 2 difficulties are a crap work life balance )so little time to plan or prep) and I love alcohol in the evening !
I'd really appreciate any tips on easy manageable quick meals if anyone has any please ? I literally leave the house at 7 amd don't get in until 8 shattered . Then I need to spend time with my dd and it's a mad rush to get to bed . Repeat .
I think 16:8 would be more manageable . Perhaps 2-10 pm ?
I know that's late but it's also realistic .
Then I thought I'd do the fast 800 on Mondays and Wednesdays and with no alcohol . That will do my liver good too .
Lastly just this past week I've realised how sedentary my lifestyle has become . I used to average about 9000 stars a day without doing anything extra , but since 2 children have gone to uni I'm not a busy running around and some days was literally doing 2000. So this last week I e taken baby steps (literally !) and made an effort to walk on the treadmill after work to hit 5000 daily .
I'll up this to 7500 in Feb amd then 10000 in March .
Phew
Sorry about long post .

harriethoyle · 30/01/2022 15:05

Welcome @easterdaffsx - come and join us!

Re alcohol - I too absolutely ADORE a tipple! Wine as do several of us here. But balance in all things is key. I overhauled my alcohol consumption about 14 months ago and no longer drink on week days and alternate Sundays. Not going to lie it was hard at first but I feel so much better for it and hit my target weight before Christmas. Definitely something to think about cutting back on because even a cheeky G and T every night will slow your metabolism right down. I find the key to midweek abstinence is lots of really nice squashes, chilled water and diet coke. Good luck! Brew

Kitchen closed after miso soup with boiled egg and broccoli x2, some dhal, a biscuit and all the herbal tea known to man. Should be back on Tues. Good luck beau and anyone else on Mon.

easter if you manage to ditch some of the alcohol I reckon you'll see great results.

harriethoyle · 31/01/2022 07:05

Well done @TheWayTheLightFalls

Anyone joining me today? Day one of a b2b...

EatYourFive · 31/01/2022 07:33

Good morning and welcome @easterdaffsx!
I have a work dinner tonight so fasting tomorrow and Wednesday instead. I forgot to take my weight last Monday but down 1.5 kg in two weeks - I'm hoping this is my accurate loss as the pace seems quite sensible, my weight also fluctuates throughout the week and is always at its lowest the morning after a b2b session.

Good luck today's faster, will be back tomorrow!
