Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

@EatYourFive I'm dusting mine off next week - I haven't used it for ages! But already got eggs benedict planned for weekend brunch and if I make bread it will turn into a total carb fest so I better not make it on Friday or ALLLLL the fast weight will go back on when I snarf a loaf of deeeelicious home made bread!

@KillingEvenings I make chilli or bolognese, work out what the calories are for the whole pan and then portion it up into 4. If you use 250g of lean minced beef and bulk out with double tomatoes, grated carrots, chopped courgette etc you can get a portion for c.250 - 300 cals. Generally feeds four as a whole. Broccoli/stir fry veg etc are an easy, low cal alternative to carbs as a base.

1.4kg off and crumpets and marmite for breakfast! What's not to like?!

Ooh I don’t realise you got 650 calories for b2b days! I’m now down a total of 7lbs, but I had my period this week, so I’m hoping next week will show more!

I’m struggling for ideas to eat, I’m in the office today, and didn’t prepare anything, has anyone got ideas for 200-250 calories.

I was thinking a tin of soup maybe 🤔

harriethoyle · 26/01/2022 09:01

@LouiseBelchersBunnyEars soup is a great idea - very rarely above 200 cals unless you go for a cream of cream version!

@harriethoyle I love my breadmaker and bread in general, managed to keep it to one slice this morning and not overdo it.
Weight done 0.8kg since this time last week, but forgot to record my pre-fast weight on Monday.

@LouiseBelchersBunnyEars I was fasting when in the office on Monday and managed to get through the day with some fruit and a couple of miso soups. I tend to then eat a bit more in the evening.

EatYourFive · 26/01/2022 09:30

*down, not done

absolutelyknackeredcow · 26/01/2022 09:51

Some great drops here
Well done
I'm on a fast today after lots of cake and nice food for my daughters birthday
I'm now I'm back to back til 5pm so hopefully the day will fly by

harriethoyle · 26/01/2022 10:41

I really want cake today @absolutelyknackeredcow... I have a couple of bananas going black at home so I think I'm going to make banana bread tonight and then at least I know what's in it, no preservatives etc!

only down .4 kg in the last two weeks, but never mind, slow and steady. I need to do some meal planning that includes my lunches because on NFD I just want to eat All The Cheese for lunch and thats not doing me any favours.

Slayduggee · 26/01/2022 12:54

Steps on the scales today and was 4lbs lighter after one fast day! I suspect this is all water weight but I’m taking this as a win. I’m hoping I can get under 15st on the next two weeks as I will have to start visiting offices again and I need to fit into some office wear!

KillingEvenings · 26/01/2022 13:32

Yes! Need to start going into the office (and interviewing!) and have nothing nice that fits me well anymore and really don't want to buy clothes for my current size when it's only temporary, right?

TheWayTheLightFalls · 26/01/2022 14:37

Signing in for a FD today as yesterday was a non-starter. Lunch was dhal, broccoli and an egg, 350 cals or so. No breakfast but litres of rooibos tea. Dinner probably the same as lunch Grin.

Kitchen closed on 500. Easy fast as I have been really busy at work
I need to work myself up for a mini on Friday before more cake at the weekend

harriethoyle · 26/01/2022 18:07

I'm doing a mini tomorrow I think @absolutelyknackeredcow.... can't face a Friday fast in any form!

OP posts:
absolutelyknackeredcow · 26/01/2022 18:11

@harriethoyle ha - well that's interesting. Thursdays is a 3000 calorie day in terms of activity
What would a mini be in that context?

harriethoyle · 26/01/2022 18:21

@absolutelyknackeredcow god knows but what on earth are you doing? Hauling rocks?!

Friday is wine time in this house. No way I'm fasting Grin

I wasn't very hungry today after 2 back to backs, so did a 3rd fast. Kitchen closed at 540. Well done everyone.

harriethoyle · 26/01/2022 20:16

Outstanding @Beautiful3 well done!

CrabPuff · 26/01/2022 21:17

NFD today - coming in at 1450 - I was going to make myself a hot choc for sweet cravings and just half the size and it boiled over in the microwave so bugger that.

Will try to be measured tomorrow as well. Back on the wine from Saturday and looking forward to it!

Good losses all round and many FDs.

harriethoyle · 26/01/2022 21:26

Me too @CrabPuff. It's always on Wednesday hump day that my thoughts turn to weekend wine Grin Wine I definitely feel better for giving up weekday drinking though so it's worth the occasional midweek craving...

OP posts:
absolutelyknackeredcow · 27/01/2022 09:26

Well done @Beautiful3 that is amazing.
So such luck for me - I was ravenous this morning

Strong maintain from me. Third week in a row. I think I need to decide whether I push for my vanity last 3lbs now or in the summer because I can eat lots and not put on weight as long as I fast. It might be easier to lose the last three when it's warmer.
All the lols @harriethoyle -about rocks - I'm very tall and it's a very active day

CrabPuff · 27/01/2022 10:18

Checking in for NFD today - just had toast and peanut butter. I might have to not replace the peanut butter when it runs out as it is SO calorific and I do like marmite just as much.

Would quite like to come in at a mini today but not going to push it. Popping to Waitrose shortly.

KylieKoKo · 27/01/2022 10:54

I am fasting today. Is anyone else?

Mangolassi · 27/01/2022 11:39

Fasting here! Just finished dinner, on 507 calories and kitchen is closed... still hungry but just need to clean teeth / bed early, right?
