Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Hi everyone, checking in. I was a long-term poster on the 5:2 threads a few years ago and went from 85kg to 65kg over a year or so. I’m now back after a (hard!) pregnancy. I started 5:2ing again in Nov, have gone from 77kg down to around 71kg now, would like to get back to 65kg but happy to take it slowly.

I’m very boring with my FD menus! I fast on Sunday and Tues usually, will skip breakfast then have miso soup with heaps of broccoli and an egg for lunch and likely the same for dinner 🤦‍♀️. Whatever works…

snowynight · 24/01/2022 20:51

Starting again tomorrow! Did 5:2 for over a year and lost 2 stone. Stopped last September and put back one of those stones that I worked so hard to lose 😢

harriethoyle · 24/01/2022 21:37

Welcome back both! @TheWayTheLightFalls I'm EXACTLY the same. I eat maybe three or four different t dinners on FDs (fishcake and broccoli, chilli and broc, spinach canneloni and broc... do you see a theme?!) And either a tuna or wafer thin ham sandwich made with a warburtons thin for lunch. I find it much easier to not even think about food choices on FDs!

Welcome @TheWayTheLightFalls!

EatYourFive · 25/01/2022 07:27

@harriethoyle yes it was easier than I expected! I also didn't pop out at lunch time like I usually do so no temptations that way either.
FD2 here we go!

KillingEvenings · 25/01/2022 07:48

D2 of B2B - just marking my place so I can find the new thread

harriethoyle · 25/01/2022 09:07

I'm also b2b-ing with you @EatYourFive and @KillingEvenings. I think today might be powered by black coffee Grin

Sorry, was on phone earlier so couldn't post fully. Weigh in is tomorrow and I'm not feeling super confident about it. Ddin't lose any last week. Fast days are fine, but felt really lazy about watching consumption on NFD so think I'm undoing my FD work. I think I need to work another fast day in at the end of a week, or a purposeful mini on Friday so that I don't have 5 days of feasting undoing everythign. OR maybe even just lowcarbing but not calorie counting on the other days? Will keep going as I am for the moment as want to get into a rhythm so at least the B2B sticks. have been doing c25k so some of this will be muscle forming too I hope :)

harriethoyle · 25/01/2022 10:10

@KillingEvenings I try and do 16:8 on any NFD's which aren't immediately after a FD if that makes sense? Basically means I skip breakfast. You might find that gives you an easy boost without needing to track on NFDs...

I'm starting 5:2 for the first time today. I really want to lose 2 stone (or as close as possible) by the start of June for a big birthday. I've probably got 3 stone to lose to be at a perfect weight for me. I'm fairly good at exercising and I've finally accepted that exercise alone won't do the trick if I don't reduce my calorie intake. Children's tea time is a killer for me and picking at their leftovers. Looking forward to picking up some tips here!

It's weird @harriethoyle I always go to bed on fast days imagining the hearty breakfast I am going to treat myself to the day after fast days but I am rarely hungry when I wake up and don't feel like eating til 11.30 - 12.

Slayduggee · 25/01/2022 12:05

Day 1 for me today. How do you stop thinking about food? I’m thinking about doing Tues and either Weds or Thurs each week?

TheWayTheLightFalls · 25/01/2022 12:15

How do you stop thinking about food?

It does happen sometimes, promise! In the meantime, brushing your teeth helps.

Solderingon · 25/01/2022 12:25

Afternoon,
I'm on day 1 of a b2b this week. I've tried separating my days but haven't enjoyed it as much. And last Friday was a FD fail, I got super hungry and grumpy and had to have a babybel and toast before bed. 😂 this week might be better.
I had cereal first thing because I was ravenous, might have a miso soup mid afternoon and a bowl of veg soup for dinner.

I've got a few (4 or 5) kgs to lose, but I also have a family history of diabetes that I'd like to dodge for as long as possible. Anyone else?

harriethoyle · 25/01/2022 12:26

I absolutely love my post FD breakfast @KylieKoKo! It just feels such a treat... but then to be fair I would happily live on toast butter and marmite if it was up to me and didn't mean I would get rickets Grin. Breakfast food is the best!

I am absolutely freaking STARVING today. Lunchtime thin inhaled already and I'm still hungry... going round the supermarket (which can't be put off) later is going to be torture! I might get some stir fry veg to bulk out tonight's fiskcakes for very little cals and save the planned broccoli for tomorrow. Desperate times call for desperate measures...

@Slayduggee I find being properly hydrated really helps and having a good selection of soft drinks and herbal teas for the evening. And holding on to the fact there's only one sleep left before brekkie!

@Slayduggee I actually find it's better not to fight thinking about food. I generally think about it and plan the next meals for fast and non fast days, restaurants I would like to visit etc. Once I have done this for a few minutes something else always comes along to distract me. If I try not to think about food I end up thinking about it even more!
Solderingon · 25/01/2022 14:11

@Slayduggee I agree, if there's something you're thinking about, promise it to yourself on your next NFD. Easiest when it's a hypothetical meal rather than actually a banana/chocolate bar accidentally in your hand though. 😂
I actually end up not wanting it 30% of the time, not enjoying it 30% of the time and then very smugly eating it the remaining 40%. It helps, because then next time I'm tempted, I think "well you didn't even enjoy it that much last time". Knocks the cravings right out.
All the extra thinking about things rather than mindless eating means I actually remember IYKWIM?

incognitodorrito · 25/01/2022 15:44

I am starving. Had my booster jab yesterday afternoon which has knocked me sideways and all I want is taco chips with melted cheese on top and guacamole!!! I think I’ll be in bed at 6 tonight !!

Slayduggee · 25/01/2022 16:49

When does everyone time their food. I managed not to have anything to eat until 11am and I’ve just had something else to eat now (4:30pm). I’m thinking now I will just have water/herbal tea until the morning.

KillingEvenings · 25/01/2022 17:11

I find if I eat, that I want to keep eating, so I just have one meal, as late in the evening as I can manage. I also have to have it all prepped and ready to cook as otherwise I snack as I prep and find myself eating raw onion Grin or whatever else is to hand. Lentil veg and rice stew type thing tonight. Just need to pop it in the cooker and press play

CrabPuff · 25/01/2022 17:48

Checking in - I didn’t intend to do a B2B but I’ve just had a late lunch and if I go without my planned dinner, I will have had about 750 calories which given I had just over 550 yesterday could work. I would rather get it out of the way that’s for sure!

Early bed and brushed teeth as usual should do the trick and dreaming of a buttered muffin tomorrow morning…

Beautiful3 · 25/01/2022 18:19

Fasted today, second day back to back. 616 today.

harriethoyle · 25/01/2022 19:06

Kitchen closed on 538 on day 2 of b2b. C. 600 average over the two days. Crumpets for breakfast tomorrow morning!

EatYourFive · 25/01/2022 19:23

Nice to see so many people in this group and so many of you doing b2b!

Kitchen closing at 587, had a small chicken wrap for dinner. Also dreaming of tomorrow's breakfast, going to make a loaf in the breadmaker, love waking up to the smell of fresh bread!

KillingEvenings · 25/01/2022 20:14

685 for me today, a bit higher than normal but D2 of B2B so I won't stress.

Gonna search around for some new FD recipes. If anyone has any family friendly favourites, let me know. I realise so many of the (non fd) dishes we make are hard to portion precisely which leads to big helpings and likely going over TDEE on regular bases, so I'm wondering if there are ways to do this easily without being some 80s housewife weighing out iceberg lettuce while the rest of the family tucks into a cottage pie. Or maybe I just need to measure a bit to get my eyes better at recognising normal serving sizes.

I was feeling inspired by our new rejoiners saying how much they had lost previously and went back to my fitness pal and saw that in 2018 I'd gone from 75kg down to about 59 and that was only over about 9 months. I don't remember ever being miserable, but it was easier bc I was working in the office, running loads and kids were still having their own dinners during the week. BUT, it was totally achievable and I kept most of it off until lockdown. So now is just about figuring out how to get this WOF to work within the new parameters. Feeling quite excited by it all actually. Hopefully weigh in and measurement stats (which I'ven ot taken for 3 weeks) will bring some encouragement too.

Went to bed early last night which cuts down on the time I'm awake and wanting food so may do the same today. dreaming of Wine and Biscuit
