Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

@harriethoyle I'm in on a b2b. Lots of cake and pizza and I'm back to my pre fast weight 🤦🏼‍♀️
I'm just yo-yoing at the moment

harriethoyle · 31/01/2022 09:14

Same @absolutelyknackeredcow - I think I'm going to do three FD this week to try and make more of a difference to the weekly totals!

@TheWayTheLightFalls well done on your Sunday fast. I'm in awe, as its something I could never do! I'm fasting today, good luck to other fasters.

incognitodorrito · 31/01/2022 11:28

Count me in … day 1 of B2B, really aiming for no more than 600 cals today and not eaten yet..

KylieKoKo · 31/01/2022 11:33

I am on day 1 of a B2B (eek).

I have 496 calories planned for today and 703 for tomorrow with room for an easy peeler orange and extra boiled egg if I need it.

harriethoyle · 31/01/2022 11:57

Lots of B2B-ers today. For the newbies, honestly I find it easier than two separate days! You'll be fab.

Lentil soup for lunch and canneloni for tea with broccoli and mange tout. It's fecking FREEZING at my house because the boiler's playing up which isn't helping!

Garysmum · 31/01/2022 12:28

I need help today. I am supposed to be fasting but feel awful. I have done my weights and walking session and caved and had to have a 90 calories of toast as well as my 90 calories of porridge as I feel so light headed today. (I have auto-immune disease and think I'm having a bad day). I can still come in at 600 (being a deficit of approx 2400-2800 for me) but I am struggling. It's not hunger. I can't take painkillers with just soup!

harriethoyle · 31/01/2022 12:33

@Garysmum some days just aren't suited to fasting. I think you'd be better postponing today and keeping your meal light and nutritious than trying and failing to fast then falling head first into the biscuit barrel. It's not a failure to postpone!

harriethoyle · 31/01/2022 12:33

Your meals* stupid lack of edit facilities Grin

OP posts:
Garysmum · 31/01/2022 12:55

Haha. There are no other suitable days this week sadly. As this is my only low intensity exercise day. I suppose even if I eat 800 calories I’ll be 2000 in deficit and that’s better than eating 2000 or 2500

harriethoyle · 31/01/2022 13:45

Definitely @Garysmum then just diarise a couple of days for next week. I count anything under 1000 as a mini and a couple of them can make all the difference

OP posts:
Garysmum · 31/01/2022 14:06

I can do the odd mini. The issue I have is I exercise hard 6 days a week so it’s never a question of shifting days more a trying not to go too far over

emmsyg · 31/01/2022 14:27

Fasting today too. Got a negative lat flow today so I’m hoping I’ll be released tomorrow. 13st 1 today so pretty happy despite being totally inactive with covid, hoping I might see a 12 on the scales tomorrow for the first time in a while!

@Garysmum that sounds awful. Please don't feel you have to do two days of fasting at all costs! If you aren't feeling good then have a week off it won't make any difference in the long run.
Beautiful3 · 31/01/2022 18:02

Kitchen closed at 466. Well done to everyone who fasted today. @Garysmum I'm sorry you're not feeling great. If I feel unwell, I'd drop the fast that day/week to feel better. Try an apple, lemon in the water and a teaspoon of marmite. It always makes me feel better. I'm fasting again tomorrow.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 31/01/2022 18:41

Sending love to @Garysmum
I'm going to close out today at 610 on day 1 of b2b. Should be able to come in at about similar tomorrow.
Hungry though Grin

harriethoyle · 31/01/2022 18:47

@Beautiful3 @absolutelyknackeredcow great fasting! Kitchen closing here on 501 so loads of calories to play with tomorrow!

I've tried fasting for the first time today (500 kcal), and I'm starving!
I've not left the house today, I'm not sure how I would manage on a more physically demanding day...
Well done everyone who has managed to do this for a long period of time, not sure if I have your willpower.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 31/01/2022 19:09

@itsevolutionbaby - I have been fasting for years and my view is that it takes about five weeks to 2 months to get used to it
Keep going

TheWayTheLightFalls · 31/01/2022 19:11

its it’s actually easier if you’re very busy ime, you look up and it’s already noon or later!

I promise it gets easier. I am doing this for the second time after regaining some of the weight I lost through daily wine drinking and constantly stuffing my face for 2 months and both times the first two fasts were hard then it got easier.

What have you eaten today? Some foods keep you a lot fuller than others so if you post what you had then maybe people will suggest tweaks.

@itsevolutionbaby I really agree with this. I can only fast on busy days... slow days are torture!

Doing my two fast days as on M and W this week as opposed to back to back as I have a v.i meeting tomorrow and don't want to be distracted thinking about food. Normally that sort of thing wouldn't phase me but it's a no do-overs type thing with clients so I need to be on my game.

Kitchen closed at 525. Omlette for dinner which wasn't too inspiring but the rest of family was just having leftovers so don't feel too left out.

itsevolutionbaby · 31/01/2022 21:13

That's encouraging @absolutelyknackeredcow @TheWayTheLightFalls @harriethoyle thanks, I'll keep going.

@KylieKoKo I had lunch and early dinner. I tried to have more protein than usual (eggs and fish), lots of salad and a bit of mash potato. I still felt like I had no energy all afternoon.

Fillybuster · 31/01/2022 22:13

Please forgive an old-timer checking in on the 5:2 thread (waves at @harriethoyle). I've been maintaining at the 9st5lbs mark for about 2 years now but have noticed some bad habits creeping into my FDs, especially a tendency to rely on an emergency sugar hit as a pick me up mid afternoon (like a handful of licorice, or a biscuit) which isn't good. And my FDs increasingly look an awful lot like NFDs. So I'm going to lurk around here for a while whilst I pull my socks up, if that's ok?
