Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

@KylieKoKo that’s a brilliant loss ! Such a good motivation to crack on. I’m hoping to get ‘used’ to 5:2 before starting with weights. Trying to get my steps upto 10k daily to ease into getting fit. I’m also trying to no longer spend impulsively. I’m doing well with eating and saving money so want to gradually ease fitness into my week too, avoiding being overwhelmed by starting too much at the same time. I feel like I’ve got so much more energy during the day though since starting 5:2.

Got it @harriethoyle, thank you!

KylieKoKo · 23/01/2022 12:52

Thanks everyone. I feel like I've undone the loss by eating out last night but I'll see tomorrow morning before my next fast day. I'm not drinking at the moment so at least I didn't add wine calories!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 24/01/2022 08:54

Hello all
Fasting today and Wednesday but hoping for a reduced day on Friday ahead of a birthday weekend.
It's weird doing a single day fast - haven't done one of them for a while
Anyone joining ?

CrabPuff · 24/01/2022 09:13

Morning all - FD today. Am having fish pie for one this evening. I’m going to try to keep it to a 500cal day to give me the option of a NFD tomorrow but consider a B2B tomorrow if I feel like getting it out of the way with the 2nd day being 700 cals.

I ate a lot on Sat, around 2,500 cals and yesterday was less sociable so around 1200 so mostly evened out. Sort of.

EatYourFive · 24/01/2022 09:33

Hello everyone, FD for me today and another one tomorrow. Also back in the office today for the first time so will see how it goes!
Good luck everyone!

KylieKoKo · 24/01/2022 09:56

Fast day for me today. I'm going to make it til tea time on miso soup and tomatoes then have spicy prawn soup for my main meal.
Good luck everyone.

Slayduggee · 24/01/2022 10:18

Can I join in? I need to lose 6 stone which is a combination of baby weight, lockdown and wfh.

I’m the heaviest I’ve ever been Blush

absolutelyknackeredcow · 24/01/2022 10:49

Hello Monday fasters and welcome @Slayduggee

incognitodorrito · 24/01/2022 11:24

Indulged so much over the weekend and ignored all notifications from MFP requesting food diary updates ! B2B FD today & tomorrow. My scales are showing a loss of 2.4 kilos since i started so feeling motivated for the week !

emmsyg · 24/01/2022 13:52

I’m only about 1/2 lb off this week so not great and have just tested positive for covid Shock

Really tired and a bit sore and really just want to eat. Help me stay strong!!

harriethoyle · 24/01/2022 14:05

Morning gang! I'm b2bing today and tomorrow too - nice and busy this morning at work and hoping for the same tomorrow... Fishcake for tea tonight I think if I can get some broc or stir fry veg, got to take one of the pups to the vets because she's got a cough she can't shift so that'll mean a late tea. At least I won't be hungry at bed!

PS was pretty virtuous this weekend (for me anyway Grin) and am still at my post-FD weight from last Weds so that's a brucey bonus...

Mangolassi · 24/01/2022 15:16

Monday fast here too, late day at work and now going to bed at 550 cals. Didn't drop any weight this week, not sure where I went wrong but trying to be stricter with fasts 😖

CrabPuff · 24/01/2022 17:36

I’ve got 20 mins to wait for my fish pie. And then kitchen is closed at 568 and I’m brushing my teeth and going to bed as soon as is decent.

Whatever I might think I want (super noodles, maltesers and manchego, mostly) I can have tomorrow. Just not tonight!

I will confess I usually build a small glass of white wine in to my FD to ease it and doing Dry Jan at the same time as one of the FDs is a PITA. If I’m not drinking, I’m generally mainlining jelly babies and if I’m not eating, the wine, all 125 calories of it, eases the feeling of deprivation! I have a wedding on Saturday and I am drinking and boy oh boy am I ready for it!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 24/01/2022 18:23

Kitchen closed on 500/ struggling not having extra b2b cals

incognitodorrito · 24/01/2022 18:49

Closing on 694 cals … that’s 94 cals less for me tomorrow.

Beautiful3 · 24/01/2022 19:00

Well done everyone 👏. Kitchen closed at 490

Garysmum · 24/01/2022 19:05

I don't do 500 calories but 600 - i am 5'10 and I do an aerobic session every day so allow myself the extra. I have 150 to go = tuna and lettuce coming up.
Week 3 and no weight loss maybe - I am not weighing myself but looking at fit of clothes so I expect I won't notice until I've lost a lot.

Big issue for me is the day after fasting I will be super hungry.

EatYourFive · 24/01/2022 19:18

Forgot to weigh myself this morning so not sure about my progress. It was my first time fasting in the office and it went really well. Dinner is kale with butter, parmesan and garlic and it's delicious, kitchen closing at 538.

harriethoyle · 24/01/2022 20:33

Kitchen closed on 622 here! Well done everyone Grin

@incognitodorrito - don't forget you get 650 per b2b so you're only 44 over

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 24/01/2022 20:34

@EatYourFive I find fasting in the office SO much easier than working from home! Much easier not to hang over the fridge Grin

@Mangolassi have you tried tracking NFD's on something like my fitness pal. Just to.see how your portion sizes, food choices, snacking, boozing is on a NFD? Might help you see where last week went wrong.
