Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Yes, I do think it's easier eating mostly the same @harriethoyle good to know others do too so I'll stick with it. I know it works for me so I'm quite reluctant to do anything different really.

Signing in for fast day, after today Friday was going to be my next FD, but I am having lunch out so I think I'll try b2b today and tomorrow, then next FD Saturday. I've never done a b2b before, and I feel weirdly nervous.
I did my weekly weight check this morning at I'm down 5lbs, which I'm really pleased about for week one. NSV my clothes are feeling much looser than I would have expected which is nice too, and my face and neck are looking firmer.

Sorry chopped off a bit of my post! On NFD today after relatively easy FS yesterday- 1lb down this morning. Noticeable decrease in stomach size.

Next FD tomorrow.

well done @Dairyqueenie , it's lovely to see those numbers coming down isn't it! I'm on day 2 of a back to back for the first time (more through necessity than choice 😂), not finding it too bad. 12st 6lb last week so will weigh in tomorrow, fingers crossed for a loss, but I've eaten out twice this week so I'll be happy enough maintaining. I also bought some chocolate in the Hotel Chocolat sale, but it's what I love about this way of eating, I don't even feel bad about it!

Back under my TW this morning but away on a fully catered work course weds-fri next week and I find a fry up irresistible 😬🙈 so I'll have to do three fasts the week after 😂

I'd struggle doing a Friday so my hat's off to you. You can do this, imagine yourself wearing a lovely playsuit, looking slim. This is what I do, when I feel myself wavering. Tell yourself, its just for today. You'll smash it! My family saved me a scone from a few days ago. I adore scones and was sad to decline it. I was so happy, I actually ate it for breakfast today!

It's not been too bad as I have been mega busy and I can start prepping my dinner
It's always the mornings when I have to push on through and then once I get passed that I will know I can make it

Logging in. Tough FD today. Can’t wait till bedtime! Frustratingly weight has plateaued over last week. I know this is to be expected but a bit frustrating none the less - I thought I might have larger initial losses since I’m substantially overweight I think this the end of second week of IF. Feeling very pre menstrual which is peri I think as period is a good week and a half away yet. Sending hugs to everyone who is fasting today or tomorrow.

Very premenstrual and made the mistake of getting on the scales this morning after one day of normal eating (fasted Mon/ Tues and Friday ) last week and seemed to have put it all back.
Really hoping that it's just pre menstrual bloat and that once TOTM starts I see some progress
