Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Happy Monday everyone. Signing in for fast day today, I also didn't get a chance to sign in Saturday as was wall to wall, but kitchen closed Saturday at 340 calories.

@absolutelyknackeredcow three weeks to go is very exciting!

@newnamenellie that is so frustrating, I had a period of a few weeks last time I did the FD where I didn't lose any weight, and then suddenly it dropped a lot and kept on dropping steadily again after that. I agree completely with Dairyqueenie too, tape measure and a mirror often shows increments of progress more accurately while you are waiting for it to show up on the scales.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 02/05/2022 12:20

Well done dairy! Great work.

It’s not linear unfortunately new (if only!). The weight loss graph ime looks like a stock market crash, lots of peaks and troughs.

I’m still going! Started 3pm ish on Sat, fasted yesterday, had black coffee this morning and I think will break fast for lunch in a bit. Then FD again tomorrow. I’m at work so it’s been easy.

harriethoyle · 02/05/2022 13:59

Fabulous @Dairyqueenie !

@newnamenellie I echo @TheWayTheLightFalls comment about weight loss being a stock market line... mine's attached if that reassures you! Long term consistency is what you need to aim for because that brings the downward trajectory ime.

Good luck to today's fasters. I'm b2b tomorrow and Weds and a mini on Thursday.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 02/05/2022 20:58

Planning a Friday one as well

sweetgingercat · 02/05/2022 21:52

Hi all, today was my first day of B2B after a four week break and a weekend of eating and drinking. Kitchen closed at 529 and I'm feeling a little bit hungry but generally good! Well done everyone who fasted today. See you all tomorrow. There's some great determination on here at the moment. Fabulous!

CatHerderGeneral · 02/05/2022 22:40

Well done all, it is very motivating seeing everyone else's determination.

Kitchen closed 340 calories. I find it easier to eat the same every fast day, perhaps I should mix it up a bit instead though.

incognitodorrito · 03/05/2022 06:02

Good Morning - Day 1 of my B2B todays. We are away from 26th May, so tried on my holiday clothing pre second child yesterday, with the exception of one jumpsuit with a bust zip … all dresses fit perfectly. I’ve dropped a size and a half since starting, very motivating ! Trying those kongee noodles for dinner today.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 03/05/2022 06:20

Great nsv dorito!

signing in here. Off to work shortly.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 03/05/2022 06:21

Nb rinse the noodles really really really well before cooking.

EatYourFive · 03/05/2022 07:42

I'm fasting today as well, just one day as have to travel for work tomorrow. Will have to get up at 4 am and will be on my feet all day tomorrow meeting people so don't think fasting is a good idea. Will do another day towards the end of the
Week.
Good luck today!

harriethoyle · 03/05/2022 07:57

Great NSV @incognitodorrito !

Happy Tuesday FD everyone... see you on the other side 🤞

Well done @sweetgingercat
Feeling ok for a second fast after a good drop over night
Good luck to all the fasters

harriethoyle · 03/05/2022 08:02

Welcome back @sweetgingercat 😊 I almost always have a variety of the same thing to eat @CatHerderGeneral . I just find it makes fasting easier because I take choice out of the equation...

How's everyone getting on? I am hungry but busy... and got a meeting at 4.30 which will mean I'm probably not home before 6ish so tea won't be super early. a) I will be hangry by then b) I probably won't be hangry in bed at 10pm! So every cloud has a silver lining...!!

35 minutes til dinner here! Konjac noodles (again Grin ) with lots of veg in a kung pao sauce. Can play around a bit more with sauces since the thing itself is so low calorie.

Today was ok. Had to dodge homemade brownies this morning but it’s been fine otherwise.

incognitodorrito · 03/05/2022 17:49

@TheWayTheLightFalls I am a fully signed up kongee noodle convert, I can’t get over how filling they are with so little calories and (once the fishy smell is rinsed away) they are surprisingly tasty with some sauce. Thank you for the recommendation !

incognitodorrito · 03/05/2022 17:50

Ps where do you buy them? The cheapest I can get them at is £2 a bag at Morrisons, I think I may start living off them during FDs so will be buying in bulk..

TheWayTheLightFalls · 03/05/2022 17:54

dorrito hooray! I find them genuinely tasty. I’m stopping myself from eating them on other days so it stays a genuinely novel thing for FDs.

Where to buy… the cheapest will be Chinese/east Asian shops if you have one nearby (ask for Shirataki noodles). Otherwise Holland and Barrett / Amazon is the best I’ve found. The ones marketed as diet products are ££££.

Beautiful3 · 03/05/2022 19:05

First fast day completed at 686. Hoping to do another one tomorrow. Well done Tuesday fasters!

harriethoyle · 03/05/2022 19:18

Home and canneloni in the oven. Kitchen should be closing on 582, all being well! Day 2 tomorrow, wfh which will be harder...

EatYourFive · 03/05/2022 19:27

Kitchen closed at 555 over here. Wasn't too bad today so it's a shame I won't be able to do a second day tomorrow.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 03/05/2022 21:16

Well done all
I'm kitchen closed on 540 - good for day 2
Breakfast prepped and I'm going to allow myself a treat pastry on way to work
Planning my third of week on Friday

incognitodorrito · 03/05/2022 22:11

Finished at 680, back on it Thursday as no longer able to do B2B due to a lunch invite.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 04/05/2022 08:00

So good news, bad news

Huge drop - down 4.5 lbs which I know was mainly bloat

But woke at 3am really hungry and struggled to get back to sleep.
Perhaps I should have a rich tea before bed on b2b days.

Coming back on Friday and doing sun/ Mon b2b
