Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Kitchen closed yesterday at 622 - I was in bed by 9, as far from the fridge as I could be. Now looking forward to a decent breakfast and a morning of cleaning and cooking. I’m definitely having a glass of wine this evening too with my other Cajun chicken breast and my many millions of veg!

harriethoyle · 28/04/2022 08:33

An excellent day yesterday by the look of things! Anyone fasting today? I'm going for a mini, c800 cals to try and proactively head off bank holiday damage 😂

@harriethoyle me! Day 2 b2b and day 3 overall this week. Scale disappointment this morning, hoping for more progress by tomorrow..

Good luck!

harriethoyle · 28/04/2022 09:00

Here's hoping for a downward whoosh tomorrow morning @EatYourFive 🤞🤞🤞

Hectic day so far but I'm also fasting today @harriethoyle . Sorry to hear about the disappointment @EatYourFive hopefully it will be a different story tomorrow 🙂

I've decided to do alternate day fasting for the first few weeks to hopefully kick start things, I've got a big event for one of the DC coming up at the end of June and would like to have made some progress by then.
After I last did 5:2 I started doing OMAD, and as I am used to only eating one meal in the evening, I don't feel hungry during the day even on fast days, which is a real bonus and seems to be making it easier, hope that continues. I am also making sure I keep more careful track of what the one meal on non fast days includes, think I got a bit slack on that.

harriethoyle · 28/04/2022 18:34

Today's mini coming in at 948 after I added a packet of crisps to my airport sandwich 😂 but at least I've resisted pret wine and cake, both of which are calling to me!

Kitchen closed at 560, fingers crossed for some overnight weight loss..
Have a lovely weekend @harriethoyle! @CatHerderGeneral I often only have dinner on FDs but I do have snacks and coffee. How does OMAD work, do you always only eat once a day? Don't think I could do that!

CrabPuff · 28/04/2022 20:51

NFD coming in at 1900 - no exercise.

I’m trying to work out next week’s FDs - maybe Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesday could be tricky though as meeting friends at lunchtime. It’s so easy to get out of the rhythm of it unfortunately so I want to try to prioritise but there’s something in the diary every other day but Weds.

KylieKoKo · 28/04/2022 20:53

Hi everyone, I took some time off because I had an injury but I'm recovering well now so will he resuming 5 2 next week. Probably not Monday as it's a bank holiday and we'll probably go out for lunch.

CatHerderGeneral · 28/04/2022 22:30

Second fast day completed, kitchen closed at 340 calories. Next fast day will be Saturday.

Have a lovely time @harriethoyle!

Fingers crossed @EatYourFive. OMAD was brutal at first or at least it was for me, but it very quickly became habit and now I just don't get hungry at all during the day. I usually only eat once per day, and I drink my coffee and tea black anyway, but occasionally if I'm going somewhere (birthday party etc) I will have say a slice of cake and then my meal later. Its actually very convenient, in an odd sort of way, and I find I have so much more energy. It also extends the fast days until the next evening without me really feeling much effect of it, which is very useful.

Welcome @KylieKoKo, glad to hear you're on the mend.

EatYourFive · 29/04/2022 07:34

Another scale disappointment this morning, only 0.3 kg lost in a week and have a couple of tricky weeks coming up workwise (two very tiring work trips). Really need to get back to my exercise routine which I have failed to resume since having covid.

@CatHerderGeneral that sounds pretty intense, don't think I could do that, I like my coffee milky to start with! Is it healthy to keep that up long-term? Not trying to criticise, just genuinely curious.

Welcome back @KylieKoKo!

harriethoyle · 29/04/2022 07:51

Welcome back @KylieKoKo ! Good to see you.

@EatYourFive I had this a few weeks ago. Really lacklustre losses. Try adding a third FD or a mini? The weights coming off really consistently for me at the moment.

Am now half a kilo below my original goal weight, so I've taken another couple of kilos off it. Just to give me some wriggle room!

EatYourFive · 29/04/2022 08:10

@harriethoyle I did three days this week for the first time, very disappointing! I suppose some of the weight I gained during my 10 day break is more than just fluids..
I have two work trips mid-week over the next two weeks which will complicate things (can't fast when traveling for work as the days are very intense), but will try and get some fasting done in between.
Great to hear that you're getting some results though!

harriethoyle · 29/04/2022 08:21

Oh that is vexing @EatYourFive ! Keep at it, it'll come off sooner rather than later...

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 29/04/2022 10:30

Thanks for the encouragement @harriethoyle! Will definitely persevere, just annoyed as it was going so well before I had covid with some good progress pretty much every week (and of course the holiday didn't help.. 🙄😄).

CatHerderGeneral · 29/04/2022 11:43

@EatYourFive don't worry, I didn't take it as criticism 🙂. No, I can't imagine its healthy long term, OMAD is fine by itself, but alternate day fasting + OMAD? I doubt it. I've spent a lot of time in hospital recently, and I've got to have some high risk operations soon which I am very worried about, so I want the extra weigh off as soon as (safely) possible to minimise the risk. I'm not allowed to exercise at all at the moment either, whereas I used to run 1.5 hrs per day, so that's making weight loss more difficult.
My dr and the consultant think it's a good idea to do it to ditch the extra weight, but as soon as I have got rid of it I'll go back to OMAD and one FD per week. They have said that two FDs + OMAD is fine for a period to lose weight, but this is a bit much other than in the short term, ie for a few months.
Sorry, that was a bit more depressing than I had intended, usually I just say it's because I have a big event coming up that I want to be slimmer for, which is also true but less depressing.

Sorry to hear about your scale disappointment, I used round sometimes my losses would stall for a couple of weeks and then take off again, hope things soon change for you, it's so frustrating when it happens.

CatHerderGeneral · 29/04/2022 11:46

@harriethoyle half a kilo below goal is excellent! Very good idea for the wiggle room, I think I'll factor that in too.

CatHerderGeneral · 29/04/2022 16:32

Forgot to update with my NSV this morning, my jawline and cheekbones are looking noticeably sharper, and my eyes look bigger and less squinged up when I smile. I have a heart shaped face and high cheekbones, and it shows very quickly if I put on weight, so I'm very pleased about that. My stomach also looks quite a bit flatter. I'm going to stick with weighing myself once per week for now.

Dairyqueenie · 29/04/2022 22:19

Day two fast completed for this week. Next fast Sunday. Pretty good day - certainly felt much more energetic than when I gorge on sugar. Only two grievances 1) I didn’t close my exercise ring on my Apple Watch as I had planned to and 2) I prepped some healthy muffins to eat for breakfast tomorrow and then proceeded to drop the batter mix as I was putting the tray into the fridge 🤦‍♀️. I am trying to eat better on non fast days as the calories can really stack up if I choose an anything goes approach. I was shocked to realise that managed to clock in nearly 3000 kcl yesterday mostly through snacking. My gateway foods are hot cross buns, chocolate and nuts - I find it had to show restraint around them. I also seem to have a bit of an addiction to oat milk lattes and found out the barista type milk is loaded with rape seed oil.
Well done to everyone who fasted today. Hope you have a wonderful breakfast tomorrow.

I’m delighted to have Sunday company @Dairyqueenie !

Signing in for tomorrow. I wrapped up eating today at 3pm, and hoping to go through to Monday noon or so. Let’s see. Sometimes works, sometimes really doesn’t Grin .

newnamenellie · 02/05/2022 07:55

Morning all,
Week three starts today with a FD, however I’ve had a disappointing weigh in this morning with absolutely no loss whatsoever at all in the past seven days 😳.

I’m weighing in on a Monday morning each week. Trying to work out why no loss…

Dairyqueenie · 02/05/2022 08:13

Morning all!

How was your fast yesterday LightFalls?

Newname- sorry about scale disappointment- have you tried taking body measurements instead? Sometimes that can show up losses that the scale does not.

Completed my first week of 3 fasts yesterday. It was a bit tricky as toddler has cold so I was at home all day with no distractions but got through it on around 300 kcals. 9lbs loss this first week which I’m happy with. I am very overweight so large initial losses are normal for me. Hope I get a few more off next week before I slow to one or two pounds a week. I would like to reach 12 stone eventually (I’m 5ft 10).

27.04.22 Start weight 16st 6 lbs

1.05.22. Weight 15.12

absolutelyknackeredcow · 02/05/2022 09:29

Morning all! I'm on bikini count down - have three and a bit weeks to go and I'm wanting at least another half stone off.

I got on the scales today and I was extremely heavy for me after a weekend of drinking and eating.

Plan is 3 fasts a week. On NFD calorie count and aim for at least 250-500 deficit. Exercise every day including doing my PT routine three times a week.

Pretty boring really. But it will work: Day 1 b2b

newnamenellie · 02/05/2022 11:43

@Dairyqueenie well done on completing last week! That’s an amazing loss!

Foolishly, I didn’t take any tape measure measurements at the beginning but I can see that my stomach is smaller - my main area is stomach and hips really, the rest of me is okay 😆

I started on 18th April at 12 stone 5lbs 3oz. I’m 5”9” tall. First weigh in was 12st 2lbs 2oz and today (a week later) is exactly the same 😕🤔

I’m doing two FDs per week along with reduced calories/mindful eating the rest of the time. Can’t understand the big loss after week one then nothing after week two despite same regime…
