Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

2nd B2b fast today. Kitchen closed at 645. Finding it alot easier, having lunch and dinner this week. Well done Tuesday fasters.

CrabPuff · 26/04/2022 17:30

I’m going to HAVE to do a B2B as I’ve wolfed everything (so so much spinach) and it came in at 627. I also really really fancy a G&T but it will have to wait!

now I’ve eaten everything low calorie I’ll be needing to shop tomorrow!

stir fry veg sounds like a winner harriethoyle - i might have to do that tomorrow, I’ve not done that for a long time!

TheWayTheLightFalls · 26/04/2022 18:37

Done! I think it may even have been under 400 cals in the end. Feel very positive about the konjac / cognac Grin noodles - I had them at lunch in a stir fry with heaps of veg and a soy sauce, and had a huge bowl come in at 20 cals for noodles, 90 for veg and the rest an estimate of dressing. Made similar for dinner but was still full from lunch (!) so ate less than half. Maybe it’s psychosomatic, who knows. I’m a tentative convert. They need a good five-minute rinse before cooking/using though.

Kitchen closing on 484. A better effort than yesterday 😂 b2b tomorrow 🙌

Kitchen closing at 796 cals, think I may need to add a 3rd day as I can’t really call the last two days fasting at an average of 750 cals ..

CatHerderGeneral · 26/04/2022 22:20

Hi all, can I join please? I was doing OMAD to maintain, but an extended hospital stay and a ban on exercise has meant a 18lbs have crept back on, so back to 5:2 for me to nip it in the bud. Today is my first fast day, kitchen closed at 460 calories.

harriethoyle · 26/04/2022 22:29

Welcome @CatHerderGeneral and an excellent first day back!

@incognitodorrito don't forget you get 650 on b2b days so you're not far off.

CatHerderGeneral · 26/04/2022 23:06

Thanks for the welcome @harriethoyle I'm sticking to having all of my calories in a small evening meal, it seems to work well for me (or has done in the past) and I don't want to get out of the OMAD habit.

EatYourFive · 27/04/2022 08:36

Day 1 b2b for me today, any other fasters here today?
@TheWayTheLightFalls I may have to give those 'cognac' noodles a try, cooking some gousto stir fry noodle meal for the family tonight and on fast days I usually have a toddler size portion myself or leave out the carbs..

harriethoyle · 27/04/2022 11:11

I'm with you @EatYourFive . Already hungry for lunch 😂🙈 it's going to be a loooong day!

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 27/04/2022 11:19

Yay was already thinking it's just me here today!!

Definitely going to be a very long day, I've already started coming up with excuses why I should only fast for one day instead of two.. hopefully can keep it up!

Dairyqueenie · 27/04/2022 12:06

Hi - mind if I join you? I’ve restarted intermittent fasting after falling pregnant with my 3rd child - a baby girl after 2 boys - almost 3 years ago. I’ve got 4 stone to lose but I know this wol works for me as I previously lost 3 stone in 6 months eating this way and was the fittest I’ve ever been.
as I am in my late 40’s with peri I find I have to do alternate days fasting to make a serious impact on my weight. I also try to eat as little as possible on a fast day as I find it hard to stop eating once I break my fast. Added challenge this time is broken nights as toddler often wakes multiple times but I’ll try to be kind to myself after really broken nights!

sweetgingercat · 27/04/2022 12:51

Hi @EatYourFive and @harriethoyle … I’m fasting today as well. Really happy to be back and feeling a bit better after Covid! I’ll probably go for a gentle 800 cals today…

harriethoyle · 27/04/2022 13:10

Welcome @Dairyqueenie just sign in on FDs and we'll cheer you on! Glad you're on the mend @sweetgingercat 😀

CrabPuff · 27/04/2022 14:18

day 2 of the B2B - I went to Waitrose and got the pork flat medallions with garlic and lemon - it’s 322 cals for the whole pack (4 smallish medallions) so I had that with some
asparagus then tonight is a Cajun chicken breast with broccoli and mushrooms.

I’m not so hungry as I was yesterday but I didn’t have a very energetic spin class which was annoying. I ran out of steam early on!

EatYourFive · 27/04/2022 15:00

Welcome @Dairyqueenie and welcome back @sweetgingercat! It took me ages to recover from covid and this is only my 2nd week back to fasting after covid+holiday.
Sounds good @CrabPuff, I'm trying to save most of my calorie allowance till dinner time..

Beautiful3 · 27/04/2022 18:05

Kitchen closed on 552, 3rd b2b fast completed this week. I can't wait for tomorrow, as I really fancy an oreo chocolate bar!

harriethoyle · 27/04/2022 18:31

That sounds really good @CrabPuff . I've just put a spinach and ricotta canneloni in the oven and counting down the minutes til it's ready 😂 kitchen should close at 597 for day 2 of the b2b

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 27/04/2022 18:48

Well done today's fasters, kitchen closing at 550 kcal here.

incognitodorrito · 27/04/2022 19:34

@TheWayTheLightFalls thank you for the noodle link, following your recommendation I’m going to give them a try next week during FDs. Managed to stay within my % off TDEE today, which I’m seeing as a little victory, normally indulge a bit too much the day after my FDs so really trying to reign it in during „normal“ days.

Dairyqueenie · 27/04/2022 21:23

First fast in the bag - hooray! Not too bad today - hunger was easily manageable. I’m a week or so into my my cycle and it’s always easiest for me at this point. In the week leading up to my period it’s a very different story! Anyone else find that?

harriethoyle · 27/04/2022 21:44

I find my weight loss the week before my totm is generally slower @Dairyqueenie but I don't notice much difference in my hunger levels...

OP posts:
sweetgingercat · 28/04/2022 00:55

Kitchen closed 590 here - I'm pretty pleased! I didn't really feel hungry at all and I was SO happy to get back to my salad and smoked salmon! Welcome @Dairyqueenie and well done! I'm already post menopausal so no more of those TOTM hunger/emotional/hormonal affects. Also welcome @CrabPuff , this is such a great site to support each other and lose weight... I'm off to investigate those noodles. I am a big noodle soup fan, so I'm definitely intrigued!
