Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

@absolutelyknackeredcow I have never even attempted a Friday fast (think I like my Friday evening glass of white too much 😄 )so I have only admiration for you!
A bikini in just five weeks sounds lovely, hope you're heading somewhere outside of UK for that!😊

absolutelyknackeredcow · 22/04/2022 21:56

Thanks for the support @harriethoyle
I'm kitchen closed on 470 - feeling very angelic

TheWayTheLightFalls · 23/04/2022 17:21

I’ve actually ended up fasting today (just for lack of time to eat) so may have a Sat/Sun b2b. Is this some sort of first (and likely last?)??! Grin

TheWayTheLightFalls · 24/04/2022 18:11

Done! Back Tues. Good luck Monday crew.

harriethoyle · 24/04/2022 21:54

Well done @TheWayTheLightFalls! Back from a very indulgent weekend away. Who's joining me tomorrow? I'm day 1 on a b2b...

Good morning, also here for a single FD today, planning to do a b2b on Wednesday and Thursday this week.

newnamenellie · 25/04/2022 12:08

Back for my second week on 5:2. Weekly weigh in this morning and I lost 3lbs 4oz last week 😊, so feeling motivated for today's FD!

harriethoyle · 25/04/2022 15:02

Fabulous @newnamenellie that's very motivating 😁

Still here plugging away, got to 12st 7 last week, so still slow and steady. Fasting today and Wednesday this week as my wee mum's coming to visit on Thursday!

harriethoyle · 25/04/2022 16:11

Slow and steady wins the race @emmsyg 😁

Oh dear... my FD fell off a cliff into a vat of curry and gin after some good work news 😂🙈 back again tomorrow for a second go at day 1 of a b2b!

I’m in for an FD tomorrow - undecided on whether it’s a B2B though. I don’t think I can be bothered with dinner this evening as I had an unexpectedly massive lunch so it feels unnecessary!

Beautiful3 · 25/04/2022 19:42

Hi all, I didn't fast last week, as we were away on holiday. Piled on some pounds! Anyway back to it today. Kitchen closed at 549.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 25/04/2022 20:07

Well done the Monday fasters - I'm kitchen closed on 530

Congrats to the those who have lost and to @harriethoyle who seems to have won 😂

absolutelyknackeredcow · 25/04/2022 20:14

Well done the Monday fasters - I'm kitchen closed on 530

Congrats to the those who have lost and to @harriethoyle who seems to have won 😂

absolutelyknackeredcow · 25/04/2022 20:14

Urgh sorry that posted twice - glitchy site still

EatYourFive · 25/04/2022 20:19

Well done today's fasters! Kitchen closed at 500 here, work do tomorrow evening so back to fasting on Wednesday.
Sounds great @harriethoyle! I could do with some good work news too, been a while!

incognitodorrito · 25/04/2022 20:58

kitchen closing here at early 700s, don’t feel too bad as also went to gym and walked hyper spaniel.. back tomorrow for day 2..

TheWayTheLightFalls · 26/04/2022 06:34

Grin harriet, sounds like a good day overall!

I'm in for a Tues fast. Busy day so hopefully not too tough - and I've bought konjac noodles after falling down an internet hole. Zero calorie noodles... anyone else tried these? They were a thing a few years ago iirc. Will report back. Planning a big stir fy.

harriethoyle · 26/04/2022 07:34

Thank you all - it was a very good day but not for my scales! 😆
Let me try again... black coffee coming up!

EatYourFive · 26/04/2022 07:41

Good luck today's fasters, I'll be back tomorrow.

@TheWayTheLightFalls in my early morning head I read that cognac noodles, now that would be interesting. Not familiar with them anyway but would be interested in trying them if they really are low calorie.

incognitodorrito · 26/04/2022 07:52

@TheWayTheLightFalls ive seen them at the supermarket and was tempted as so low calorie, but the slimey looking consistency put me off. Would be interested to hear how they taste in a stir fry though.

CrabPuff · 26/04/2022 13:37

I’m having Miso soup. I am pretty hungry, I don’t mind saying! Dinner is salmon fillet and I think spinach with some tahini in if calories allow.

and I’ll probably have it very early indeed!

sweetgingercat · 26/04/2022 14:22

Jeez! I'm watching you all fasting and I'm feeling a bit envious. I really want to come back, but I'm still suffering post covid, so I'm having to wait a bit...
