@Phwooooar I’m doing the online plan and I think it is worth it as they give you a specific meal plan with shopping list and it’s all calculated to have the best mix of nutrients, I’m sure that’s why I haven’t struggled

thenewaveragebear1983 · 01/07/2020 10:09

@Phwooooar welcome and congratulations on your wedding! I personally wouldn't join the online programme, just join us on here! I don't cycle but I do run. To be honest, there's mixed views about carb loading, I have heard it's fairly ineffective for women. I do feel I need carbs before a long run. If you get very heavy achy legs it can be more that you are depleted in electrolytes and using a sugar free supplement can help, or for very long runs I use the Maltodextrose gels (eg doing a half marathon next week, I will use one before and during race). Is 1-2 hours a particularly strenuous cycle? I suppose that would be how you would gauge it? Remember as well, fructose doesn't fuel your muscles at all, so you are actually better with a glucose/dextrose type 'fuel' than anything that claims to be healthy because it's fructose based.

If you felt sick and light headed, please please slow down.

I am hoping my body was just in shock Blush I ate granola this morning and feel better today Smile I think I’m going to slowly remove things from my diet until I get used to it.

verybritishproblems · 01/07/2020 10:14

if you felt very light headed then it could be that you were dehydrated or low in salt, or just simply not used to such a dramatic drop in calories. Or could you have been in ketosis? I find I feel quite woozy in ketosis and it's not entirely enjoyable.

Sorry I missed this reply. I was drinking green tea throughout the day and water so sure I had enough to drink. You’re right though, I added my cals to MFP and I was around 800 so that’s half my usual intake. Taking things slower now Smile

Phwooooar · 01/07/2020 10:26

@Plancina thanks for the info - can you start the plan when you choose i.e. after a few days or is it immediate?

@thenewave that’s helpful re carbloading - thank you. No, it’s not particularly strenuous other than when you get to hills! It;s just that cyclists always talk about avoiding “the bonk” when you run out of energy - I think I have a way to go before I’m doing the long rides!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 01/07/2020 10:44

@Phwooooar these things are quick acting and easy to use but for just training or fun cycling I'd be wary of becoming too reliant on them for fuel. You will become more efficient at using your own fuel stores (fat basically ) for energy provided that you train your body to use it. There's also a danger of hugely overestimating the calories you'll burn during even a very prolonged exercise, eg dh and I ran 16km last week and it was around 1200 cals; not sure how cycling compares with running in that sense?

Hi everyone and welcome new joiners.

Phwooor and tinkywinkyshandbag there are at least a couple of us on the thread in our 50s Smile.

1st of July, can’t believe it. I really must put my winter coats away, a couple are hanging by the back door since we went into lockdown in March!

B Coffee
L Scrambled egg
D Chicken, chickpeas, paprika and using up veg casserole

Feeling really well but have not been sticking to 800, just avoiding the obvious bad carbs. I will try to calculate calories in dinner when prepping later. I need to get more organised. Emotional week here, DH changes jobs, last day is Friday after 13 years. We are really glad of the change, it’s all good but strange, I feel tense until it’s officially over but then my period is due ... DH is fine.

Plancina · 01/07/2020 14:04

@Phwooooar you get a prep week before the actual 800 cals begins to get yourself ready but I didn’t bother and just started it, my wedding is in 4 weeks so I didn’t have any time to waste! Grin I’m Almost 2 kilos down in three days, it definitely works!

Phwooooar · 01/07/2020 14:25

@Plancina - 4 weeks! Wow - congratulations. I have a few months to sort myself out Grin. Thanks for the info - that’s useful - and you’ve lost weight - even better!!

MozzchopsThirty · 01/07/2020 14:52

@thenewaveragebear1983 I went to Aldi today but couldn't find any of the endame & soya pasta Sad where else sells it?
No kettle bells either Sad

Looking desperately for pasta substitutes as I miss it more than anything

Are there any low carb bread substitutes? I'm not fussed on rye

thenewaveragebear1983 · 01/07/2020 15:01

@MozzchopsThirty it's not usually with the pasta, it's with their foodie market stuff which is their health food brand.

www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/297608000

looks like Tesco Also do one, or Amazon?? Napolina do a red lentil one too but it is higher carbs. Our Tesco also sell kettlebells!!

I have a gorgeous recipe for a bread, I will post for you now. I sub a few things: baking powder instead of bicarbonate + tartar, plus I add loads of herbs, sundried tomatoes, and olives. You can leave them out entirely if you prefer a normal bread. I make it as a big blob on the tray and it cuts very well. Watch out for the cals though. I work out the total cals for whole recipe and then weigh the cooked loaf, and then weigh your slices and count accordingly because due to the seeds/almonds it is quite high. It's very easy to eat!

I started fasting properly for the first time last Saturday.
It's well into the afternoon & I've had green tea and black coffee. I don't feel hungry at all & I'm not really bothered! I'm not complaining but is this normal? If any of you experience this do you just go with it & save all your calories up for a more substantial dinner?

mswibblewobble · 01/07/2020 16:35

Hi all Smile

Will jump on this thread too please? Have had more than enough and need to do something about my weight!

Am 5'8" and am 13st 8 Sad Have put on 2.5 stone in last 18 months and feel horrid and fat. Tried eating low calorie and exercising at beginning of lockdown and didnt lose anything after 3 weeks so just gave up and ended putting more on Sad

I'm 40 this year and want to get back to 11 stone for my birthday so need something that is going to work! Unfortuantly giving up smoking last year has not helped and seems to have thrown my metabolism out too. I'm just so sick of being fat. I looked at myself in mirror this morning in just my underwear and am disgusted with how I look nowadays. Time to woman up and do something about it!

Bestbees · 01/07/2020 16:48

Welcome @mswibblewobble

You will find this thread so supportive and the plan is pretty straightforward. I know it sounds bonkers but I genuinely feel like 800 cals is a decent amount now! Also, the speedy weight loss is a great motivator. Do you have any of the books? I like listening to podcasts too.
Top tips are loads of water and herbal tea. Focus calories on fat to help you feel full. I like to skip lunch and eat between 12-6 so I can have two pretty decent meals for 400 each. I also find keeping both meals fairly equal in terms of cals helps so say 359 for lunch and 450 for dinner.

Are you driving straight in or easing in?

mswibblewobble · 01/07/2020 17:21

thank-you @Bestbees Smile

Going to jump straight in belts and braces. No point in procrastinating any more. Started with 18hr fast today and just made dinner of crumbled cauliflower, salad and 2 spicy pork belly slices Smile

Am logging onto mfp so can keep track too. How many grams of carbs is 'allowed'? My meal tonight is coming out at 15g carb, 62g fat & 36g protein (766 calories) Are those percentages about right? (8, 73,19)

MozzchopsThirty · 01/07/2020 19:27

Hi welcome to the newbies it's a great plan to stick to and like PP said you will feel like 800 is enough

I made a great dinner:
Cod fillet with roast tomatoes & garlic
Corn on the cob
Homemade broccoli & cauliflower cheese

Feel stuffed 😊 839 calories today

Oh and I bought cakes for work and didn't have any

Thank you so much for the bread recipe @thenewaveragebear1983 it sounds delicious! I'm going to give it a go despite never having made bread before

Plancina · 01/07/2020 20:01

I made cauliflower mash today - I think it’s nicer than potato! So yummy. I had a rough day because I didn’t get a lot of sleep. Amazed I stayed on track but I made it! Kitchen closed now and bath and early night planned.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 01/07/2020 20:37

@MozzchopsThirty it's not bread making in a conventional sense, no kneading or anything.
That same book has some rolls and scones recipes which I am going to try, I'll let you know!

I've been hungry today! I'm due on tomorrow which is probably why, and I have done 3 workouts too (run, 1hr yoga, and 30 mins abs hiit) but I've ended the day on 1300 cals, 21g carbs. Thankfully I had roasted that chicken so I just had lots of chicken meat as a snack and 25g pecan nuts to keep the edge off. Still not a grain of sugar since Friday, and I still feel very on plan, considering previous months I'd been face first in cake by now! I'm really pleased with the steady scales dropping, and I'm feeling really in control for a change.

Tomorrow, a walk in the morning and a picnic lunch if weather allows (probably salad and egg or ham). Dinner is the chicken and coconut curry from the book, although after making it twice now I am going to use light coconut milk (it is swimming in oil) and double the quantity of lentils and chicken, bulk out with veg, and make double the amount. That will give me some freezer meals for next week too.

Cauli Mashed with cheese makes a lovely topping for a cottage pie/shepherds pie/fish pie as well

OP posts:
Justasecondnow · 01/07/2020 20:53

Hi all, today I had:

Avocado and carrot salad w/boiled egg
Spinach, red onion and goats cheese omelette
Sugar free jelly
Milk for tea
= 839 cals, carbs - 35...
... until I ate 6 pringles. Why!?
= 915 and 8 extra grams carbs.

Wanted to do something positive before pringles snowballed but just couldn’t face hardcore exercise so went for a 30min walk with a podcast. I feel like I did the thing diet gurus would recommend- don’t fall off wagon after a slip up, do something positive to distract yourself. So pleased about that.

And ahh you are pretty close to your goal ilovemydogandmrobama2 my goal is 9.7. If I manage to get to that and then maintain at that for a bit - I might later try for 9 stone. Big if tho!

Oh and hi to all the new starters. I always give the same bit of advice which is take measurements as well as start weigh in. And a before photo if you’re feeling brave! Disclaimer I did the first but not the second and wishing I’d done both now. Waist is 30.5 down from 33 inches - still in same size 12 jeans tho, so hard to see sometimes... but good lord they must have been creaking at the seams before!

Bestbees · 01/07/2020 22:08

Well done @thenewaveragebear1983 sounds like you have had an amazing week. What are the top things that have kept you going?

@justasecondnow I think you did great to have a blip and then turn it into something positive. It's that which makes all the difference. It is a WOE not a diet that you can fall off. I think that view helps me, thinking that this is how I eat (with a plan to relax some aspects when at goal) rather than temporary. So sometimes we eat in a suboptimal way, but that doesn't mean it is all ruined or over. I have the same goal as you, 7lb to go. What about you?

Plan for tomorrow is cheese and spinach omlette for lunch. Will be slow cooking ox cheeks with soy, garlic and ginger to make stir fry for dinner. Will hope that the delicious smells wont make me nibble all day!

Fingers crossed for a loss tomorrow.

Kimlek · 01/07/2020 22:53

Closed the kitchen at 7pm with 973cals and 27carbs. The black bean pasta (Aldi) tasted ok with the Mediterranean chicken.
If you can’t find dried pasta substitutes you can spiralise courgette; that’s what I usually do.

Kimlek · 02/07/2020 07:41

Static at 10.4.6 - very happy as I did wonder if yesterday’s weight was an anomaly.
Feeling melancholy today as it’s my Yr6 DDs last day ever at junior school. They finish at midday. We’ve absolutely nothing planned. She’s a bit down too as no leavers celebrations etc. Or holiday to look forward to.
Brisk dog walk this am, over to friends for Bfast (not sure how I’ll manage that one), lunch leftover dinner, and dinner chicken tikka. Forgot to get a cauliflower for the rice. 🙄

Plancina · 02/07/2020 07:48

Weight static today also, hopefully just a pause on a downward journey.
Today I’ve planned a short HIIT workout and a long walk to get my 15,000 steps. I’m also picking up my wedding dress at 2pm! I haven’t seen it finished yet because of Covid so I’m really excited.
I think I didn’t drink enough water yesterday so I’m also onto that today. Food (all from the online plan)
Greek yoghurt and rhubarb
Chilli prawns with spinach and peppers
Chicken salad with celeriac chips
Going to ease off on the sneaky extras today (dash of cream in coffee/bowl of strawberries w dinner) to see if weight moves again.
