@Polkadotties

Hello everyone I’m jumping aboard. I’ve done low carb /keto on and off for years but never calorie counted. I have PCOS and I think low carbing and eating high fat whatever I want just isn’t working, I don’t get the initial two week loss, my weigh fluctuates within a few lbs. Going to give this whirl, I think I need to low calorie aspect to break through whatever my body is doing. Weighed in this morning at 13.9.4. I’m 31 and 5ft6
If you are low carving but still not losing weigh you may find that the time restricted eating/intermittent fasting element of the diet really helps you make progress. If you’re interested I can highly recommend episodes six and 10 of the low carb MD podcast which lots of posters here listen to. Really good overview of what insulin resistance is and the importance of fasting.
Polkadotties · 28/07/2020 15:29

@Madhatterhouse I IF naturally apart from a cup of coffee. I normally eat dinner about 8pm and have lunch at about 2pm, no breakfast.
I’ve logged my lunch today, 619 calories. Going to be a small dinner!
My lunch was a chicken salad using thighs and mayo. Only a drizzle of mayo compared to normal and no handful of grated cheddar that I usually add. I can see how it all adds up!

outwest · 28/07/2020 20:22

B: Black coffee - 2 kcals
L: Ham & cheese omelette - 340
D: Chargrilled mackerel caught early this morning, bought from fishmonger at midday, about 250g - 350
Veg / salad - 55
Cheese 30g - 114
Closing at 861 for the day.

Weight still trending down steadily.
Now 2.5kg or so from goal. Another three weeks?
Stay on target!

So the weight that went on with my period seems to have gone again. Still not really losing though but I do have other rather exciting benefits. My gingivitis that had to be kept in check with frequent hygienist visits even though I was scrupulous with my dental hygiene seems to have gone. As has my TMJ, as has my need to wear a mouth guard. This is bloody life changing for me as sleep was such an issue!!!!

I’m not sure if giving up caffeine alongside the diet has also helped, but my god I’m SO chuffed Grin

Justasecondnow · 29/07/2020 16:37

Oops fell off the thread a bit - partially been busy with fun family things and just about making good choices to off set the reality of socialising with family and food - so for the good I did one meal a day a bit and picked stuff like kebab and salad... but the bad is also did stuff like having a salted caramel martini for afters. Not exactly BSD but better than having chips and pudding. Feel like I’m moving into maintenance eating when really still want to shift last 5lbs. But last few days time of the month (sodding coil, sodding promises of no periods) and a dicky tummy- that you’d think would make me want to eat less actually makes me crave comfort food and sugar! I’m trying though! Will def be over 800 though...

Today had:
Tuna and butter bean salad (w/mayo it didn’t need)
Sugar free jelly
Tons of tea
A Maryland cookie 🍪 - I would generally class that as substandard biscuit but was mana from heaven today
And planning beef pho tonight - recipe undecided if anyone has a good one!?

Hoping to get in a run to get in better head space. And hoping for stay the same on weigh in on Friday (ok I want a loss but bloody unlikely). So will likely still have 5lb to lose in 2 weeks. Also unlikely but hope to get close.

Sorry very me me post! going to read what I’ve missed now.

Dinnerfor1 · 29/07/2020 19:19

We’ve had hobnobs delivered by accident (honest!) and they are my favourite biscuit! I’ve been making sure I only order biscuits I’m not bothered by (custard creams) to remove all temptation. It’s near impossible for me to have just one hobnob so may give them to my mum!

Left over chicken cacciatore for lunch and then egg and veggie sausages for tea. I managed to get a beginner weight training session done as well.

Justasecondnow · 29/07/2020 21:50

Hobnobs delivered by accident is the nightmare scenario they are the creme de la creme of chocolate biscuits!

... Actually made it out for my run and now experimenting with fake tan.. which is not like me. I’m practically transparent usually. I’ll let you know how orange I am or otherwise tomorrow!

WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa · 30/07/2020 09:03

Morning everyone.

Trend is still downwards, hoping to make it to 7lbs lost in July by tomorrow. Then it's just another 7lbs to my next interim target of 4 stone by August 26th. 🤞🏻

I'm having a rest day exercise wise, and my food will be OMAD as I'm eating out tonight, which will also make it a 24hr fast.

Have a good day everyone. 😊

WhatWillSantaBring · 30/07/2020 09:11

Agghh, two whole days left in July and I'm still 2lbs above my goal. Sooooo frustrating. I think I need to stop the 800 cals a day and give my metabolism a chance to reset but I sooooooo want to get to my healthy BMI. Shall I settle at being just a tiny bit overweight, or shall i prolong the agony (I am getting thoroughly bored of this) for another week???

Hmmm. Reading what I just wrote makes me think I need to work on my mindset some more. I'm just fed up that I couldn't lose more that 4lbs in six weeks.

What do people think about the "theory" that people have a set point weight? I hate that idea, but I'm scared that it's true (and that I'm at my set point now).

Polkadotties · 30/07/2020 11:18

My OH came to the stables last night and took some videos of me riding. Eurgh I look so fat. Really hope this way of eating works

outwest · 30/07/2020 12:01

"What do people think about the "theory" that people have a set point weight?"

@WhatWillSantaBring, think used by many as an excuse not to do anything about weight. However, feel there is probably a grain of truth, insomuch as at some point the body assumes it is being starved and probably goes all out to rescue itself. Think @thenewaveragebear1983 mentioned that she feels there is an optimum weight point for her and getting down below that becomes uphill struggle?

Find Jason Fong's arguments persuasive, re cycles of ghrelin, leptin and insulin and also benefits of fasting to mitigate insulin resistance. Those have difficulty losing weight perhaps failing to get these cycles right (eating when least hungry, snacking between meals etc.), thus end up rowing against the current.

Dinnerfor1 · 30/07/2020 12:26

@WhatWillSantaBring There’s definitely a point at which I start to find it harder to lose weight, and am inclined to settle at that weight as I’m happy enough. But I think @outwest is right that I always use it as a bit of an excuse not to push on further, when it’s getting more difficult.

I’ve had a picky lunch today and then am going to have a nice casserole for tea.

WhatWillSantaBring · 30/07/2020 15:59

Hmmm, there seems to be quite a lot of uncertainty about the set point theory (and no actual scientists proving it exists). Largely, people seem to say that you need to stabilise at a new weight for a prolonged period (six months) before trying to lose more. Which is pretty much my plan (although i'd hoped to stabilise for three months, not six).

@outwest - I'm rubbish at taking in information by listening (I prefer reading) so I'm not sure I'll get round to listening to Jason Fong. Is it very different to Michael Mosely?

Just had a whole set of weights arrive (to kick start the next phase of building muscle and improving fitness rather than losing weight) and 1kg is sooooo light. I feel like I'm just one giant poo away from goal Grin... I'm also full of cold, so wonder if the snot is causing additional weight???

@Polkadotties it does work. Have faith in the system and it really really does work. It's horrible seeing photos of yourself that you don't like (which is why there are hardly any photos of me from the past 7 years) but use it as motivation when you find yourself reaching for the cake. I know it was used as a pro-ana mantra, but I do find that saying "nothing tastes as good as skinny feels" helps me remember what I'm doing and why I'm doing it.

justanotherneighinparadise · 30/07/2020 16:14

It stands to reason that those who are at a higher weight initially will lose weight more readily than those who are at a a healthy BMI (albeit it the higher end). The last time I lost weight rapidly I was fasting and my calorie deficit was high. This time my BMI is 25 and the weight doesn’t want to budge. But I’m going to ride it out as I’m in it for my health primarily.

ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 30/07/2020 16:59

Going home tomorrow from holiday - we've been in Skye all week and am slightly apprehensive about getting back on the scales...

Haven't gone mad, but at the same time wanted to enjoy myself and and not make food a big issue.

DH is going to diet with me when we get back, so that's something.

Justasecondnow · 30/07/2020 21:14

WhatWillSantaBring Just wondering how much you’ve lost and how you feel now. Cos 2lb away from goal pretty much is goal in my book given how weight will fluctuate a bit day to day. I’d be tempted just to be mega proud of your achievements and go to maintenance for a bit & go back at it later if you want.

Might need to give myself this advice in a fortnight!

Good day today - eggs, bacon & avo for lunch and beef pho for tea (forgot the pak choi so couldn’t have last night.) Plus milk in tea. About 800 I think. Fingers crossed for weigh in tomos.

Oh and fake tan went ok - not too orange!

Justasecondnow · 30/07/2020 21:15

Oops sorry just read your update - riding it out also a good option!

outwest · 30/07/2020 22:29

Closing kitchen at 796. Usual black coffee for breakfast (2), chicken wholewheat noodle soup for lunch (285), followed by grilled salmon, salad and a few chips pinched from the serving dish (509).

Weight down for 6 out of past 7 days. Overdue a bump upwards for a day or two.

outwest · 31/07/2020 12:22

"Overdue a bump upwards for a day or two."

Bang on schedule - 500g up this morning, despite a clean day yesterday.

WhatWillSantaBring · 31/07/2020 14:42

how does that happen @outwest - at least you were expecting it (but that probably doesn't help). Are you net down over the last 7 days though?

Despite my best efforts, I didn't make my goal - still a lb over, but decided to move on to the next phase, which is all about maintenance and feeling confident with a new WOE. So great that DH suggested the pub for lunch - but managed to say no to pudding, and had two starters to eat, both on plan.

Do you worry about carb counts? Or is it fine to ignore them if you're sticking 100% to the rules?

outwest · 31/07/2020 15:12

"how does that happen outwest - at least you were expecting it (but that probably doesn't help). Are you net down over the last 7 days though?"

Not sure how it happens @WhatWillSantaBring, but is a regular pattern. Weight falls a few days, pops up one or two days, then falls again. Usually more down days than up days, so still down for the week. Been losing 1.0kg to 1.2kg a week pretty steadily over past couple of months. Expect that the weight will fall start falling again in a day or so.

Don't pay so much attention to carbs myself, but do count - tends to be in the 50-70g range.

outwest · 31/07/2020 19:43

Must hang head and admit to 1,021 kcals. Proximate cause was newly baked sourdough, in er, close proximity to home-made blackcurrant jam. Subsequent events unfolded with shameful lack of inhibition.

Have cut remainder into slices and frozen them. Stable doors, bolting horses, etc.

WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa · 31/07/2020 21:14

I had pizza tonight @outwest, so you're saintlier than me at least. 😂

Kimlek · 01/08/2020 03:44

Ahh me too @ilovemydogandmrobama2
Had a few days away staying at a friends so not my menu and lots of wine involved. Needless to say I’m up 4lbs. They did comment on how good I was looking and both are now going to look into this woe for themselves. So not all bad. I’m awake at stupid o’clock because it’s hot but thinking I’ll fast til dinner. Lots of water and have bbq chicken with salad for dinner. I’ll walk dog early and if not too hot will try some hiit. Where have you git your weights from @WhatWillSantaBring?

outwest · 01/08/2020 09:38

"Expect that the weight will fall start falling again in a day or so."

Slightly mistaken yesterday - was up 400g. This morning, down 500g, so another new low. Why the 500g decline? . No idea.

Rather laboriously made point: many of us will get these fluctuations. Personally don't see that as reason for not weighing daily. Weighing in every morning gives me better sense of where I am, especially when looking at graph/chart of weight. But do understand some people not keen on seeing the ups and downs.
