The self sabotage!!?? Why?!

@fufulina Your question is rhetorical, but answer is that humans not rational - rationality is bounded, or selective. Immediate, minor rewards prioritised over long-term, significant rewards. Ancient parts of our brain want to feel good now with certainty, not possibly good at some point in future. Not a revelation, but good to keep firmly in mind.

Been fighting this cognitive bias (if it even operates at level of cognition) for decades in one form or another.

justanotherneighinparadise · 24/07/2020 07:49

Wow this is actually working, I’m amazed! 159.2 this morning and I started at around 164 after I cane back from holiday. So five pounds in two weeks.

I’m probably not being as strict as I could be, but I’m being consistent and I’m not hungry which means I can imagine just carrying on. Fingers crossed I don’t stall 🙄

Kimlek · 24/07/2020 08:20

Everyone seems very buoyant and getting skinnier!! Despite a very lovely pub lunch with potatoes, one half slice of amazing cardamom bread and rather a lot of red wine I’m down again today. I was too full for any dinner so accidentally went OMAD. I’ve another pub lunch today but will not drink and will avoid carbs. It’s also an hours walk there and another back again. Also out for a Greek dinner tonight but now wondering if should cancel.
What are the podcasts please @justanotherneighinparadise ?

justanotherneighinparadise · 24/07/2020 08:26

I’m just slowly wandering down a rabbit hole Kimlek. Started off with fast800 podcasts, now I’m listening to Low Carb MD who have collaborated with Jason Fung. I could do without the wise cracking they do but I do like all the experts and after I’ve exhausted those I’ll probably move on to some of the podcasts of the guests they have as I find the whole subject fascinating.

WhatWillSantaBring · 24/07/2020 09:15

What’s OMAD please?

WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa · 24/07/2020 09:15

I'm heading out for the day today, walking, so I've broken my fast early and had some porridge as I did find I was getting fatigued during exercise a little yesterday. Now I feel sick! My body clearly does like breakfast anymore. Or maybe it doesn't like porridge?

Lunch today will be a lo dough chicken salad wrap. Tea will either be BBQ Chicken thighs at home or something similar if still out.

Have a good day everyone.

WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa · 24/07/2020 09:16

OMAD - one meal a day.

Dinnerfor1 · 24/07/2020 13:06

I’ve had a good start to the day so far. Went for an early morning walk, fasted til lunch and now having salad and smoked mackerel.

I used to be queen of self sabotage, a habit I’m really hoping to kick. I think regular weighing does help. I’ve found the daily weighing has helped me recognise my normal fluctuations, so I don’t get as downhearted when I’m a pound up or have a bit of a plateau.

justanotherneighinparadise · 24/07/2020 14:11

So this is interesting! No appetite at all for lunch. I made it and decided I wasn’t hungry so I e put it to one side to have later! This is coming from someone who was formerly completely ravenous 😮

WhatWillSantaBring · 24/07/2020 15:18

I'm absolutely with you on the self-sabotage - it's part of the lying to myself because facing the truth feels like it will be too hard. I also think it's part of the problem with dieting - it (can be) such hard work to lose weight, that if you have a weekend/week off, the thought of having to start again or going back four steps to re-lose the weight again can be so demoralising that it is "easier" to kid yourself by not stepping on the scales (and wearing your loosest/stretchiest jeans etc).

One of the benefits of the Fast 800 (or any VLCD) is that you can lose the weight so quickly. I'm hoping that in future, if i put on half a stone in a week's holiday (which for me is easy to do) then I'll be able to shed that excess weight in just a week or two, so I know it's a blip. Having said that, I'm also hoping that the mediterranean diet principles will mean that I don't put on the half stone in the first place!!

@fufulina - my interim target is to get to a healthy BMI (and I'm soooooooo nearly there). After that, I want to move to maintaining and check that I can do so, which is why I've been obsessively following the two AIBUs on habits that slim people have.

In the long term, I'd like to get down to 11st (which is about 70kg and makes me a size 8/10) but doing so by being much more physically active. I've never been lighter (except when I touched 68kg after a nasty bout of D&V) so not sure whether I can/should aim for lower.

outwest · 24/07/2020 19:55

One of the benefits of the Fast 800 (or any VLCD) is that you can lose the weight so quickly.

@WhatWillSantaBring Agree, gives you safety net for when you fall off. Think another standout characteristic of this VLCD is that recipes are generally very good, so doesn't feel like sacrifice to eat the recommended food. Can easily see a dozen recipes from the diet/WoE becoming recipes used in maintenance, and not only on restricted days.

Closing kitchen on 795. Coffee for breakfast, meal replacement shake for lunch (was going somewhere without good eating options), Spanish chicken with chorizo and beans for dinner, followed by 30g of cheese.

Justasecondnow · 24/07/2020 21:52

Yay 9.12 this morning, so 2lb down - 5lb to go to goal 3 weeks to get there - doable but if not I should get pretty close.

Rough plan is then try to maintain for two months. Depending on how that goes in Nov might go back on for a month to get to 9 stone. But a lot of ifs there...

Do feel pretty happy my guesstimating has worked pretty well and also not been too hungry. Suggests I’m getting the hang of it all and bodes well for maintenance.

Today’s efforts:
More roasted pepper and butternut squash soup
Chicken and pork kebabs on bbq w/salad
A chocolate freddo
Milk for tea

Oh just wanted to add to WhatWillSantaBring - where you said about using BSD to manage holidays...

I had week off rails recently (hoped to be sensible but failed) that week didn’t weigh, following week when was back on it scales said +2, next week lost that, this week back to where I was before my derail. Fixed in a fortnight. And some lessons learnt about managing weeks off (I need boundaries!)

Sorry mega long post!

Kimlek · 24/07/2020 22:54

I agree with what you’re all saying about it not being too difficult to get back if you go slightly off the rails whilst on holiday for example. I think the main thing is to do so quickly. Not go too crazy on holidays/derailing episodes. And not too often. Otherwise it could be one up to dieting, which I understand to have it own issues.
I’ve had a lovely day today but not listing my food as it’ll go on several pages. Pub lunch and Greek dinner out plus a couple of Pinots. But a treat day. Enjoyed and savoured every mouthful so no regrets.

NibbleQueen · 25/07/2020 07:11

@Justasecondnow sounds like we're at same weight and same goal. Have you found the weight harder to lose as you've got closer to goal?

Yday I had
Lentil salad + kiwi + about 20g good chocolate
Greek yog and blueberries
Chicken breast jalfrezi + green salad + teensy bit of naan
Half bottle red wine, 1 negroni

Still quite carby due to lack of planning but chuffed at the takeaway and actually not a lot of alcohol for a Friday night!

Kimlek · 25/07/2020 08:07

Otherwise it could be one up to dieting, which I understand to have it own issues. this made no sense, sorry! It was meant read ‘otherwise it could be yo-yo dieting....
I’m up a lot this morning (4lbs) which is to be expected after such a big day yesterday. I’m also premenstrual so tend to gain a couple of pounds. Feeling very full and bloated this morning, so will have black coffee and lots of water and fast until a late lunch. Making sure my body burns of yesterday’s calorie & carb overload.
Happy weekend all!

WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa · 25/07/2020 10:13

Good morning everyone. My weight is up slightly today which I'm blaming on yesterday's additional carbs. (I had a lovely mint choc ice cream cone while I was out walking) but that's fine and it'll be back off again tomorrow.

Today I'm going to be OMAD bar the protein shake I will have after my weights session. I'll also cycle 22km today.

Can't believe how miserable and dark it is today, in comparison to yesterday's blue skies. Glad we went yesterday at least!

I agree that I find this WOE much easier to get back to after any sort of slip, I really do feel like every day is a new day. I think it helps weighing everything day too because the progress/derail is instant?

Dinnerfor1 · 25/07/2020 13:57

I’m also hoping this woe will make it easier for me to get back on track if I slip up or holiday. In the past I’ve lost weight then gained it back and by the time I’ve realised/ decided to do anything about it, it feels too late and big mountain to climb again. I don’t want to keep going up and down, I want the weight loss to be for good this time.

I’m having a fairly lazy day watching the cricket. Yoghurt, raspberries, chia seeds and peanut butter for lunch and then chilli with lots of veg for dinner.

I have been listening to Low Carb MD podcasts all day - so interesting, I thought I was already quite well versed in intermittent fasting/low carb/keto but there have already been some real eye openers in there.
Justasecondnow · 25/07/2020 19:31

Hi all, and NibbleQueen re losing getting harder - not particularly - had a little plateau for a bit but then my holiday week, where I always expected to put on but completely lost the plot, skews my results a bit!

Start: 11.1
Week 1: 10.9 -6
Week 2: 10.7 -2
Week 3: 10.5 -2
Week 4: 10.5 -0
Week 5: 10.3 - 2
Week 6: 10.0 - 3
Week 7: 9.12 - 2
Week 8: ?!?! (holiday week went off rails!)
Week 9: 10 +2
Week 10: 10 -2
Week 11: 9.12 -2

Hoping last 5lb will go in a similar way!
Funny day food wise been trail running a big chunk of the day so cals & carbs been up. But not used as an excuse to go off rails. Hope you’re all having a good day!

outwest · 25/07/2020 20:31

Finishing for the day at 805 cals.
B: Black coffee - 2 cals
L: Ham and cheese omelette - 340
D: Peppered mackerel (actually kipper?) and stir-fried cabbage - 280
Steamed vegetables - 31
Cheese 40g - 152

Weight hit a new low today. Not falling in straight line, but declining steady overall. Been too busy with other things to get any work done in woodland, bit frustrating...

WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa · 26/07/2020 08:18

Good Morning everyone!

Yesterday went well. Minor/teeny loss on the scales this morning too.

Today will be a TRE of 18/6. Lunch will be a batch cook from the freezer, evening meal will be chicken thighs and veg.

Exercise will be a long cycle, 44km minimum, a hiit workout and possibly a walk if the weather holds but it doesn't exactly look promising. 😬

Hope everyone has a good day.

Kimlek · 26/07/2020 09:10

Morning everyone! Your forest does sound amazing @outwest
I’ve lost the 4lb I gained yesterday by going OMAD yesterday. I had lunch then simply wasn’t hungry. I think eating only when you’re actually hungry has been the biggest revelation for me.
I’ve got some £30 renpho scales that link to a free app. Love it. As you can see my BMI isn’t too bad but I’m still a fair way from being 25% body fat. So although my goal is only 1.2lbs away, it looks like I need to keep going. My skeletal muscle is still too low so more exercise for me. Interesting though isn’t it?
Oh and seen as I’m posting data... I also love the free ‘happy scale’ app. You can see where it smoothed out when I ‘rested’ during lockdown for 3 months.

Morning everyone! Your forest does sound amazing outwest

Forest overstates case a little! No stately woodland this - only scrub, bramble, and hodgepodge of trees of all sizes. But keeps me occupied when not at work.

WhatWillSantaBring · 26/07/2020 14:11

I should have posted yesterday, as I hit a new milestone- 3 stone off and dropped into the 11s. 2lbs to go till I’m a heathy BMI and I’m determined to do it by Friday.... so I probably should not have had the three macaroons Blush

Getting excited about the next stage of my journey- normal food and healthy habits and TRE, and lots of exercise.

One question- what things are on your weekly shopping list as staples. Emergency snacks, essential ingredients etc?

WhatWillSantaBring · 26/07/2020 14:13

@outwest I was half hoping you’d answer “what’s my forest like” by saying “Keilder”. In my head you live in a stately home with 10000 acres....
