@thenewaveragebear1983 thank you - this is really good advice! It was one large slice of cake 😬 however im definately back on it today

Should i be eating more than 800 calories if also excersizing? I may have misread the book wrongly

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/07/2020 15:56

@Newhouse76 no I think you're ok doing a few hiit sessions a week on 800 cals. I've been doing this a long time so I find that for daily intake I just need higher cals or I burn out

OP posts:
thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/07/2020 18:03

Closing up the kitchen on 1150 cals, 35g carbs, 10k steps (and did bootcamp this morning!) and about to do yoga

A good day actually, although I do feel hungry now despite just eating dinner, so I will have a big drink of water and try to think about something else!

Tomorrow: no run as I'm doing my super long one on weds (eek) but I will do yoga and maybe a walk. My food will be salad lunch, and dinner will be a beef chilli casserole and I have some sweet potatoes for some wedges as I am carb loading for weds.

@WhatWillSantaBring welcome! And not at all TMI. It’s good to have a proper introduction. You’ve done brilliantly so far and once we start getting nearer the goal weight it does get trickier. I’ve never tried meal replacements but I’d look at the recipe thread for low carb ideas and it may be worthwhile getting the recipe books. I’d do similar to bear’s idea. I’d probably keep the shake for lunch though and have a proper dinner but it doesn’t matter. Gradual rather than suddenly could be easiest. Are you doing TRE with an eating window? You may wish to have a look at Jason Fung’s YouTube videos. Given you’re so close, normal food may need to be coupled with low carb options and intermittent fasting. Lots to think about and don’t want to overload you with stuff!!
@Newhouse76 I’ve not done HIIT but keep looking at it. I’m pretty sure that it’s crucial to rest / have days off. This is when muscles repair their tears that will have occurred during the training and allow them to grow & strengthen etc. So maybe 3 times a week would be plenty rather than every day.
Oh dear! A bit of a disastrous day for me. Fasted til lunch bar a shortbread biscuit. I know that counts. Eldest DD made them first thing. Smelt blooming amazing. She makes seriously good shortbread. 🙄 Then at lunch I was out and about with youngest DD who was determined to have a Burger King. It’s apparently been years since she ate fast food! You can all guess what happened and that I’m blaming her. I didn’t eat the bun or any fries. Just the rest of the double whopper. Im doing dinner in a minute which will be sea bass and salad. I did manage a brisk 5k dog walk... yeah me. Not!! 😉

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/07/2020 18:53

@Kimlek that doesn't sound too terrible, didn't the Atkins diet used to say you can eat a hamburger without the bun? I'm sure that's low carb enough!

Pretty happy with today - managed 15,000 steps and a 75min yoga class (outside! With real people!) and didn’t eat anything outside the plan.
Tomorrow we are bringing lunch to Dfiance’s mum and stepdad, lentil and aubergine moussaka with salad, roasted Mediterranean veg and strawberries and cream. I’m fasting til lunch, also driving so won’t be drinking.

My sister and her son (10) have to come and stay with us this week, she’s in a bad situation at home and needs respite, am glad to help but selfishly worried it will impact my workouts and diet. Will have to stay strong!

WhatWillSantaBring · 06/07/2020 21:38

Thanks for the warm welcome! Hiit me with information about TRE? (Do you see what I did there- geddit? Grin) It’s not something I’d considered but I’m happy to take the advice.

I like your ideas about have structured (repetitive) meals- I mostly did/do that anyway for breakfast and lunch. I’m just a real picker- which is a habit that has slid back in (hence stalling at the 12.4 mark).

I think if you have someone to stay Placina, it is worth being upfront with them and explaining both what you’re doing and why it’s important to you, so where you need them to help you (eg you need xx time alone for a workout or what meals you can or can’t cook for them).

Which One of the MIchael Mosley books do you most recommend? Confused by the choice!!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/07/2020 22:03

@WhatWillSantaBring I like the original 8 weeks blood sugar diet book (but I think that's because It was the one I started with), although fast 800 is probably better because it's more recent. The TRE is definitely a bigger focus than in the bsd book.

TRE is basically time restricted eating, so gradually entering out your fasting period so you go longer without food. 16 hours not eating to 8 hours eating within a 24 hour period is a good target. So eg eat at 12 and again at 8pm, then fast until the next day at 12. Some people do occasional long fasts so eg on day 1 eat breakfast and lunch at day 4pm, then don't eat until day 2 at 4pm (gives you a 24 hour fast) but I personally don't do this as I get too grouchy. Fasting has so many metabolic benefits, it's not so much about calorie reduction but about improving your metabolic function.

You wouldn't believe the amount of times that autocorrected fast to fart while writing that

Hi Everyone - I’m new here but hope you don’t mind if I join the thread. I need accountability and encouragement.

My Fast 800 book arrives tomorrow with a new set of scales and, following a bit of online research, I did my first day today. Going to bed feeling verrrry hungry and verrrry glum that I’m now classed as morbidly obese.

I really want to know what it’s like to not be a fat person and feel comfortable in my skin again.

I have been cheered up by reading some of the impressive results on here though so thank your all for being my motivation.

Kimlek · 06/07/2020 22:48

Huge welcome @Zebrasandfairytales sorry to hear you’re going to bed hungry. That’s not good. Please make sure you eat enough fat. If you’ve dieted before you may be on a low fat mindset but this is very different and the good fats prevent the hunger. Focus on avoided the carbs. Also remember that the hunger is a wave and it will pass.
@WhatWillSantaBring I also started out with the little paperback BSD book and although it explains the science well, the recipes are a bit lacking. I still think the BSD recipe book has a lot of merit. And if you’re going from meal replacements to normal food I think this will ease you in. The fast800 recipe book (I have only the recipe book & not the explanation one) is also very good but the recipes in there allow more carbs. To be fair you won’t go far wrong with any of the books and there’s lots of us to help out. Do you enjoy cooking? Have the time? As this could be a big factor as to what will work best for you.

Kimlek · 06/07/2020 22:58

Forgot to mention @WhatWillSantaBring that TRE (Time Restricted Eating) is whatever you want it to be. The idea is to move away, far far away from the fallacy of little and often. Our bodies need some non eating time. More than just during sleep apparently. I don’t have bfast (unless DD has made delicious shortbread) but eat between 12 and 8pm. That’s my eating window. So I eat as much and as often as I like within that window. Albeit low carb etc etc. Some people call it 16:8 meaning 16 hours fasting (mostly asleep) and 8 hours eating.

Plancina · 06/07/2020 23:11

Welcome @WhatWillSantaBring - this is such a nice thread and so many really knowledgeable people, I’ve learned a lot. I think you’re right and I’ll just be honest with my sis and tell her I’ll need to workout etc.
Excited to weigh in tomorrow to see if scales have finally moved Grin
Food tomorrow:
No breakfast as fasting
Red lentil and Aubergine Moussaka, roasted veg
Red pepper “quiches” with kale and broad beans
alllll the coffee

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/07/2020 07:04

Morning all! @Kimlek explains it far better than me! TRE is the one thing I've always struggled with; I rarely eat breakfast but I do nibble in the evening. I find it a real discipline to stop eating after dinner but I have done it successfully the last few week and it does help.

@Zebrasandfairytales what you said there really strikes a chord with me ' I want to know what it's like' - that's exactly how I felt when I started. I used to say "it's my turn now" - my turn to be slim, my turn to be the slim one, the healthy one. It's incredibly liberating.

I saw on a (dieting!) Facebook group a 'nothing tastes as good as slim feels....except donuts pizza crisps, chocolate...' hilarious meme Hmm and it made me so angry because honestly, you will feel so amazing when you eat this way. It's one thing to lose weight but you will feel healthy in a way you never have before, and it's really amazing. Trust in the plan, read and reread the books and enjoy!

Another little half down today, 10.7 on the nose.

0.25kg away from breaking into the 64 bracket. Only 2 pounds from the 9 stone bracket too - really hope if I’m dialled in with food and exercise this week I can see that milestone soon.
My highest ever weight before this was 9 st 8, feel like there’s a long way to go before I see that number on the scales again.

Plancina · 07/07/2020 07:34

@thenewaveragebear1983 you’re so right about the junk food - it makes me feel and look like crap when I eat that way, the food I am having now is delicious and totally satisfying. I am also amazed that I can now fast til 12 without panicking - I used to be so afraid of being hungry, it was like the skinny scared 10 year old me still lived inside me. Now I feel calm knowing I’m doing something amazing for my body and that I won’t die if I don’t have breakfast!

Kimlek · 07/07/2020 08:05

Weigh in 10.1.8 this am. 2lbs to my goal!! I can’t believe it. I do look slim. Have bought some size 12 jeans & shorts.
You were right bear the shortbread and bunless burger didn’t do any damage at all. I’m down another 1lb.

I think it was Kate Moss who originally said ‘nothing tastes as good as skinny feels’ - she was slated for it at the time. Probably because ‘skinny’ isn’t associated with healthy. You are all so right, I feel really good about my body right now. I’ve been a size 12 before. In fact I was 8/10 although my 20’s and early 30’s but I never appreciated my slimness then. I bloody do now! And not just vanity but healthier. Albeit I need to do exercise other than dog walks.

Kimlek · 07/07/2020 08:07

@Plancina how are you making your red pepper quiches please? I’ve tons of eggs!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/07/2020 08:16

I don't really like the message of 'nothing tastes as good....' because I think it's been used as a pro-anorexia thing for so long. But I do think we are conditioned to think that junk food tastes amazing. I find it funny that people can fully recognise that food has the power to change our moods (eat chocolate when I'm sad etc) but can't see that healthy food has the power to do this too! And dare I say it, on this particular Facebook page, it is people who are struggling to lose weight who perpetuate the junk food = amazing mentality and it all seems rather sad sometimes.

Anyway, nice work on the shorts @Kimlek ! StarStarStar

Interesting about TRE - one my own downfalls comes when I am cooking for the family, so now have a strategically positioned drink of water with lemon. It also acts as a reminder Smile

Still stuck on 9 st 11 lbs. Seems that my weight will stabilise before going down again. Maybe this is just my own pattern?

Well done Kimlek !!!!

Kimlek · 07/07/2020 09:14

The Facebook page sounds defeatist. Not a helpful mindset at all. That’s what I’m missing the most from not going on hols is the lovely seafood and salads. Gorgeous fresh ingredients. I try to copy them but just not the same.

Newhouse76 · 07/07/2020 11:10

Hi everyone is making such good progress!
@ilovemydogandmrobama2 I must almost equal on the scale to you.
After my cake eating binge im pleased that i have lost the kg i had put on yesterday. Im at 63kg - would love to get to 55kg but even 60 would be good.

We’re going to a cottage in Norfolk for a few days next week so am going to stick to 800 calories 12-8ish this week so can relax a bit and enjoy some ice creams when away! Even if i lose a kilo this week will be happy with that - its all around my tummy, am pure sugar 😱

WhatWillSantaBring · 07/07/2020 14:11

What about "nothing tastes as good as healthy feels"? I agree that the original mantra is dangerous when "skinny" is an unrealistic size 4/6, but if you're in your forties and a size 16, and you class "skinny" as a size 10/12, then it's a good thing to say to yourself when you're reaching into the fridge to take out a slice of delicious chocolate fudge cake grab a snack.

I think for people that have been overweight for a long time, the messaging about food and the stories we tell ourselves are really important. I'm trying to come up with new mantras, and that "nothing tastes as good as skinny feels" is one I'm using. I need more though - particularly to stop the picking at food. Angry

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/07/2020 15:55

Just ran 22km for my virtual half marathon, fuelled by a mini packet of love hearts (tasted so sweet!) and an isotonic glucose gel thing (not low carb!!) I had originally planned to do it tomorrow but I was starting to talk myself out of it so did it today. Today might be a bit of a write off carbs wise as I am certainly going to refuel with a homemade cookie made by dd, so all in all a bit of a sugar fest, but actually I need proper food after that so my menu will remain as planned!

OP posts:
Bestbees · 07/07/2020 17:07

Well done @thenewaveragebear1983! You can eat that cookie with no guilt!

I posted this morning but didn't upload. Down a bit this morning so happy. Saw a friend who asked what I had been doing as I looked slim so that's made me happy. I would need to drop 2lb by Friday to achieve my mini goal so really focusing on having a good fast period as this seems to make the difference for me.

Lunch was feta and lentil salad.
Tea is pulled pork and fennel, carrot and pepper coleslaw.
Bike ride after tea which will help avoid my danger snack zone.

Kimlek · 07/07/2020 19:15

Crikey bear you make me howl I had originally planned to do it tomorrow but I was starting to talk myself out of it so did it today. this speaks volumes about your resolve. Go you!!!
Had sea bass and salad for lunch; pan fried chicken & salad for dinner in a minute so should be a good cal count when I plug it in.
