Blood sugar diet and fast800 thread 19

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/05/2020 22:25

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

I am semi joining if you don’t mind I’m cautious about placing too much pressure on myself as don’t want to end up with disordered eating. How we, a plan seems to help avoid this. If I’m not overeating I’m not bingeing.

Yesterday had a beautiful Thai just chicken with herbs and vegetables no rice. I was a little hungry in the night but I felt so much better. Not sluggish, not bingeing, not thinking I just want more. I sometimes wonder if u healthy eating is a form of self abuse.

I’m not going to worry about unlimited veg though. If I count the kcal i haven’t quite got rid of my love for huge portions.

Today parmigiana lunch
Salmon salad for tea
I have had skimmed milk in coffee does that matter?

Good luck all and it’s about self compassion I think. How great do you feel when you’re nice to yourself. I cringe typing that but my husband will often say you would never talk about a friend as you do yourself.

My parents were very strict with food and we were rewarded for good behaviour with sweets - I hate sweets so go figure! I will always reach for carbs when down though. That can be oat cakes or just anything with cake in it!

Itshotoday · 25/06/2020 08:02

I hope you don’t mind me crashing in! I think I can see why weekly weigh ins may be helpful it’s good to assess progress too.

I am hoping for something that is sustainable

collywobble · 25/06/2020 08:12

@Clevererthanyou I had hypnotherapy last year to help me give up my sugar habit . The hypnotherapist kept telling me to snack on grapes if I was hungry and I kept thinking no I can't as they are full of sugar! Apart from that it did help in terms of being put off sweets and cakes . He made me visualise how much benefit the healthy vegetables would be to my body and how detrimental a piece of cake would be and how sluggish it would make me feel. I haven't had a sweet craving since going but turned my attention to wine and cheese ! Maybe I need to go back ?
Jumped on the scales this morning full of anticipation after a really low carb low cal day and I've put a pound and a half on . I'm hopeful it's just the heat that's made me retain fluid as I have stuck to the plan religiously.

Justasecondnow · 25/06/2020 10:45

Forgot to post yesterday’s efforts:

Leftover chicken lime laksa
Smoked mackeral frittata
Iced skim milk late cafe Nero
Milk for tea
Sugar free jelly

Total 900 cals & 45 carbs

First recipes out of book I didn’t like - smoked mackeral frittata. And there was a bug in my side salad Envy. Felt grumpy and still hungry all evening. Which I still feel now! Still weigh in tomos so soildering on.

Still weighing up what to do on my week off. Need a bit of soul searching I think! Interesting thoughts re hypnotherapy too. I just feel so self conscious about that sort of thing!

And bestbees hopefully just a blip, which is only a problem if you let it derail you - which you’re not - you’re back on top of it already!

Cocobox · 25/06/2020 10:55

Hi everyone one and welcome Itshotoday. I have one mug of coffee for breakfast with semi skimmed milk in it every morning. Pretty sure it’s fine. At the beginning of this thread thenewaveragebear lists the Mediterranean style food and ins and out of Blood sugar diet/Fast 800 if you haven’t already read it.

B Coffee
L Cold chicken (sm), tomatoes and leaves
D Salmon fillet, mange tout, asparagus

Back is still sore but improving so I am happy and looking forward to dinner when it cools down this evening.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 25/06/2020 12:20

Yay - after a plateau, hit 9st 13lbs this morning. Smile

Not sure if my metabolism has slowed down, but it's generally too hot to eat, so am on the hard stuff (fizzy water).

Have a great day everyone

ilovemydogandMrObama well done, you are in the 9s. Star

bluepixie · 25/06/2020 16:27

Well done @ilovemydogandmrobama2 Well done for sticking at it.

I’ve been good today - coffee am
Chicken and brocolli lunch

It’s my wine night tonight which I planned ages ago. Sigh. Plan is 2 glasses only (I can’t really handle more tbh!) and grilled fish for dinner. I can keep my resolve with a drink in me I’ll be in at
1000 cals and 30g carbs which is fine for a night with a friend. I will report back later at what an angel ive been!

bluepixie · 25/06/2020 16:29

Oh also after today I’m not touching alcohol for 2 weeks (then it’s a big family celebration on day 15)

thenewaveragebear1983 · 25/06/2020 21:04

Ohhhhhh I was doing so well and then it all went to weasel poo.

Tomorrow is a new day I guess!

Kimlek · 25/06/2020 21:55

Well done Obama Welcome ItsHotToday I’ve been no alcohol for almost 2 weeks now cream. It’s not been easy though. And I was losing better when I had G&Ts (put it in with wine), static with a nice cordial instead. Why is water so boring? Even with mint lemon & ginger it’s still a bit dull.
I’ve not been hungry today so didn’t eat til 4pm but drank 4 litres of water (with mint lemon ginger); 3 teaspoons of halo ice cream that I don’t even like and a square of Cadbury dairy milk m, which I love as my DDs were all making various concoctions. Dinner was Chinese chicken drumsticks on the BBQ with a big salad. I had diet lemonade with lime and bitters instead of joining DH on the wine. So I’m coming in at 562 & 20 carbs. But I’m sure I’ve forgotten something. Feel very bloated and chunky tonight. Could it be the heat?

Kimlek · 25/06/2020 21:56

Oh no! What happened bear? Booze?

PhoenixMama · 25/06/2020 21:56

I don't know what's happened but I think I melted. Woke up this morning seriously bloated (including my face being all puffy!) today wasn't too bad but not great either. Looking forward to it being a bit cooler and me being less tired! DD (almost 11) is really hard work right now and I'm really behind on work with having to manage her and school and everything else. Anyone else wish they could just have a few days totally to themselves where they don't have to do anything for anyone?

Clevererthanyou · 25/06/2020 23:02

Good evening 😁 on Monday afternoon I weighed 129.5kg ... today I weigh 127.7kg. I’m glad that I don’t seem to be craving sugar as much as I thought I would and I’m enjoying the lack of headaches from eating junk!
I just wish I knew how much a kg weighed 😂 I’m waiting patiently for an improvement in my joint pain so I can move about more. The idea of going for a walk is spurring me on.

Cocobox · 25/06/2020 23:23

Clevererthanyou you’ve lost 4 lbs, fab! If you don’t like kgs you can probably change your scales. I switched my scales from kg to lbs by turning it upside down and finding a teeny tiny pin hole which I stuck a pen into and presto it switched. A you tube video showed me.

I am too hot to sleep. Dog had vet visit in garden for his annual jabs. Was so excited by vet and vet nurse that he seems to have hurt his tail (I am guessing he whacked it against their van). May have to get vet back to check his wonky tail. Risking him breaking a leg at the excitement of a second visit from the vet.

I think today has been good but it’s so hot I feel huge. Back still not right but better than it was.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 26/06/2020 07:19

@kimlek yes, it was my last day at my job yesterday, so I sent my final emails and had a g&t (or 3) and then just ate crap for 30 mins. It's amazing just how much crap I can eat in such a short time!

Miraculously, no damage on the scales this morning. Last night was horrifically warm, my dh has an ocd around security/switches/plugs....and windows it seems. So yes, every window firmly closed. 1am we were literally cooking in our beds and then I really struggled to get back to sleep. Woken this morning and he'd clearly waited until I was asleep and has gone and closed them again...Confused

So today: a bit of final admin to do. I'm not planning to drink this evening as I feel crap. Lunch is egg salad, and a lovely ribeye steak for dinner. I started rereading my hypno book after our talk yesterday so I will continue that today and listen to the audio again..

@phoenixmama I totally get your need for solitude. It's my birthday next month and dh asked what I want and I said I'd just like to go somewhere, anywhere, by myself. Preferably somewhere I can paddle in the sea, but I'm not fussed!

OP posts:
Kimlek · 26/06/2020 07:46

bear a birthday paddling in the sea sounds lovely but I doubt you’ll be by yourself!!! X
I’m half pound down this morning. But a bit disappointed.

Bestbees · 26/06/2020 07:58

I just can't get back on it!
I have down loaded the obesity code to read and hope it gives me some inspiration.
Last week i was 9.13. today 10.2.
Wtf

Itshotoday · 26/06/2020 08:45

Waver - at least now you can celebrate and I wonder if you’ve been winding up to just leache the flood gates without counting everything.

I resonate with the I have to be careful it I will eat the lot. I watch as others say nope can’t eat any more and I’m usually thoroughly perplexed! My gran was like it and my one of my parents. There we go allocate blame! I think it means we have to be a bit more mindful and sometimes days like that’s get me back on track.

I actually think this way of eating is a way of looking after yourself . It’s trying not to see it as a challenge or a struggle, it’s actually being kind to yourself. I like my psycho babble.

Milk in coffee this am. Lunch and eve meal likely be protein with unlimited greens!

Thank you for the welcome and I can gain 2 lbs in a day busybee !

bluepixie · 26/06/2020 08:53

Right I’m on a 2 weeks straight and narrow no wine no sugar no falling off. Healthy tasty nutritious food. Last night was good except the wine but I had nothing sweet prob came in at 1200 and 30 carbs. Not weighed myself as I know I’ll cry! So will do it in a few days . Least all bday celebrations are done!

@Kimlek 0.5 is great. I know u would rather see more but u have lost a lot and mainted a while it will slow down now ur in a healthy weight range. Huge well done on the no alchol too :) it’s hard in the sun to avoid!

@bestbees. Don’t worry. Nature of plan is u gain and loose quickly a lot will be water. If u get back on I find I loose it the same no of days I didn’t follow plan. So I’ve had about 4 days off and I know It will take me 4 to get back to where I was. Part of this woe is about making postive life changing steps and there will be ups downs . I’ve given up for weeks inbetween and then got back on it.

Will the gain inspire u to go again?

Bestbees · 26/06/2020 09:22

Thanks guys. I hope it will spur me on. I think clean fasting i.e. no milk in tea helps, and not snacking at night. Tomorrow I am having socially distanced cocktails which will be a write off, but just focusing on food on plan. I think that the 3/4pm boredom time is a hot spot for me, I think I just need to not be in the kitchen!
It is so hot here today but have packed a picnic for a local park with the kids.
Food today- mackerel salad
Dinner- sausage, slice of halloumi, coleslaw and salad. Slice of melon.
All the water I can squeeze in.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 26/06/2020 09:25

@bestbees I retain a ridiculous amount of water at times. I'm due on in a few days, I usually gain around 5lbs! I am part camel 🐪

@Itshotoday I think you're right. I've tried to avoid thinking about my new job and now this one is over it is a bit of a release. I have absolutely hated teaching during lockdown (I teach English and maths to polish and Hungarian adults) and as you can imagine it's been very tricky. I feel like I've let them down by leaving and not seeing them through to next year, and so trying to be 100% organised with all the handover. It's stressful. I think last night made me sad because it was so different to how it would have been 'in real life'; we would have ended term probably with a few drinks in a nice beer garden and said goodbye properly!

So yes, I did totally crash last night. I feel rubbish today though!
