Blood sugar diet and fast800 thread 19

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/05/2020 22:25

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

I just nearly had a heart attack! We getting pizza on Father’s Day - it’s authentic amazing italian wood fired etc. And they do one no cheese and it’s delicious. And I was looking at similar ones only and they have 100g carbs per pizza?!?! Often more!!!!
What am I gonna do!

Nearly had a heart attack

bluepixie · 19/06/2020 20:36

Ok clearly so shocked I wrote about the heart attack twice Grin

@Cream123 it doesn't surprise me really, it's basically bread! There isn't really an alternative is there? I guess you could make/take some salads and then have a slice or two rather than a whole one? Or just accept it as an unavoidable...,

My dh and kids love dominoes etc it I hate it for exactly this reason; at least with Indian or even chippie, there are ways around the carbs even if not the cals. With pizza there's no alternative.

Sorry- I know this isn't the answer you wanted!!

I’ve just basically planned for no carbs brekkie and lunch black coffee and half pizza and will make a salad. We just having it at home the 3 of us. So I should manage 55 carbs for the day which i isn’t tragic (if I don’t break!)

thenewaveragebear1983 · 19/06/2020 21:45

Oh if you're at home then that changes it a bit.... seriously if I was at home I'd avoid the pizza or do like you suggest and make salad and have just a taste of pizza. You'll feel so much better about it if you plan it and have a bit rather than end up having loads and you know on Monday morning you'll be saying 'why did I do that?!'

agteacht · 19/06/2020 22:28

@Cream123 would you consider making your own?

If so, try fathead...

Disclaimer this recipe is high cals - but low carb, 5g a slice. Dunno how many cals in the takeaway pizza but I imagine it's a lot too so this would be a lower carb way of doing it and just ignore the cals for one day...

agteacht · 19/06/2020 22:30

PS @thenewaveragebear1983 's suggestion is clearly more sensible, mine is if that's not an option!

Kimlek · 19/06/2020 22:49

cream how many carbs:cals in a wrap? They work well as pizza bases. One of Justine Pattinsons ideas... you simply smooth pasatta over a wrap, add a few topping. Heat the oven to max (or could be grill, I’ll check in am) pop in for literally seconds. They are crispy and gorgeous. Throw on fresh baby spinach, fold to make calzone. We used to make them all the time when the kids were younger, in fact most days through summer!

bluepixie · 20/06/2020 08:00

The pizza has caused a lot of discussion!!! The place shut during corna and DH has sad coz it’s his fav! It’s now opened and I’ve not told him so was gonna be a surprise for him. We also hardly ever eat dinner together as DS is 2.5 and eats at 4ish me 5ish and DH at 7ish is tmrw we al eating at 5 so sort of want to join in! I’m sticking to half and a salad. I know I prob should have none...but I’m not as angelic as u guys!

I’m also thinking today and tmrw I could do OMAD - never done this. I always have 3 small meals. Any tips. I’m keen to do it but I’ll get starving!!!

Bestbees · 20/06/2020 08:15

I fell very badly last night. Crisps, popcorn, chocolate and gin. Felt self destructive. Definitely emotional as I am.finding lockdown hard. Feel sick this morning too. Which at least might be a good reminder.

Back on it today.
Lunch - cottage cheese with chopped veg wrapped in lettuce
Dinner - roasted tofu and veg
Lots of water!!

Kimlek · 20/06/2020 08:56

What’s OMAD cream

bluepixie · 20/06/2020 08:57

One meal a day! I’ve just about 3 l of water in a hope that helps! I know u have done it before ?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/06/2020 09:07

@Cream123 I know a few people have had success with OMAD but I think I would find it hard. I suppose the danger is that you lump all your calorie allowance into one meal, but then if you do end up grazing or eating something extra, it's always going to be 'extra' isn't it? Which meal would you do? I suppose a high protein/fat late lunch could work for me... a full English breakfast maybe? I can do a late lunch, and then that could keep you going through the evening.

Static at 10.8.2 this am
Didn’t go to friends for drinks last night as a bit nippy to be sitting outside. Was pleased to avoid wine. But ate DD3’s carrot cake that she didn’t like. Why? The bin works fine 🙄
So DH wants to have fun with the pizza oven today which means pizza lunch and an attempt at pulled pork for dinner. The latter is fine as they can have bread baps & salad, and I side salad. But blinking pizza! I hate eating different things to them as I worry about eating disorders. I’m also trying to enforce us sitting around a table and eating together rather than disappearing into the bedroom to eat (DD1 I’m looking at you). So like you cream I’ll have a portion and salad. And try very hard for another no booze day. I’m getting non alcohol Rose later so may try that, depending on calorie content.
Happy weekend all!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/06/2020 09:10

@bestbees I did too! Bloody millionaires shortbread. I had a few g&t as well. Don't feel too horrific this morning and have just been for a run, but stepped on the scales as punishment and of course, I'm up 2lbs again! I could in theory have a lovely low carb day today, lots of exercise as we are going hill walking, and a nice picnic and I'm not going to drink tonight so will aim to end the weekend lower than I started it!

Kimlek · 20/06/2020 09:10

Oh OMAD = one meal a day. Got it

Kimlek · 20/06/2020 09:19

I’ve done a long fast BUT I probably drank milk with coffee as had no clue that counted! I think I went from dinner to dinner. So yes, the 2nd day would have been OMAD. But the first was normal. So if you fast today until dinner that’d be the same as I did. I remember it kick starting progress after a very lengthy plateau. Only done it once though. And suspect I drank tea/coffee throughout.

Kimlek · 20/06/2020 09:27

Aw bestbees sorry to hear you’re feeling a bit emotional with all this lockdown. It’s so difficult. Hope you’re feeling more upbeat today. I heard DD1 go downstairs at midnight last night and lots of rustling around. When I went to investigate She was making ginger biscuits and in a relatively good mood... I mentioned not sleeping and depression; had a tiny bit of a chat (ish).

bluepixie · 20/06/2020 09:31

Good advice. I’m gonna see when I go till and try eat “tea” at 4 and that helps my only meal but I don’t think I’ll manage. As it’s 930 and I’m hungry Grin

Bestbees · 20/06/2020 10:36

Thank you for all the support guys! I know that without this thread I would probably have thrown in the towel. I stead I have prepped all the food for the day and feeling positive.
@Kimlek seems like that might be a chink of light for you to start talking to your daughter. Have you tried a long walk or drive? I find teens open up better when it is not so intense.

bluepixie · 20/06/2020 11:07

@bestbees I agree about thread. I’ve been this weight before and I then give up and stop and gain. But I’m intent on loosing and making this a way of life now. I wouldn’t manage without all u excellent ladies! I’m a slow loser/maintaining but it’s fine for me atm. Better than throwin in the towel

Ok so it’s 11 and I’ve managed on 2 coffees (with 15mls milk in each so not a clean fast but it’s insightful I’ve skipped brekkie which I usually can’t even imagine).

Hoping to get to 4 and have dinner then

bluepixie · 20/06/2020 11:09

Missed ur post kimlek - really glad u got a moment to chat with ur DD. Maybe a drive as mentioned above or walk alone with her she may open up to you more? I imagine it’s hard to not push it too much too. Hope ur ok Cake

bluepixie · 20/06/2020 11:09

Oh!!!!! I sent u Flowers not cake!!!!!

Kimlek · 20/06/2020 12:18

cream I’ll take cake & flowers!! 🤣 I’ve now eaten 3 of her lovely ginger biscuits. 🙄 so much for fasting til lunch. I’m starving today. bestbees yes drives and dog walks are usually good, at least with my other 2. DD1 is a very quiet introvert who finds me extremely annoying. She laughed last night and said ‘absolutely everything’ when I said I knew I annoyed her and maybe she should give me a list. At least we found it amusing!

bluepixie · 20/06/2020 13:16

So on
30 mls milk
Half a fish finger
Hunger gone.
This is a revelation! It’s all in the mind. Knowing it’s pizza tmrw and my bday is making me manage today at this. But next week I’ll struggle too much!
