Fasting / 5:2 diet

Blood sugar diet and fast800 thread 19

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/05/2020 22:25

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

Thank you everyone.
I know if I can hang in here, if I can get to the end of the week and start seeing the weight coming off again... I will be fine. I think a big bit was week 3.... a combo of week 3 in general and also wine going massively off plan for 3 days means I feel like I stagnated for a bit. This week I am loosing, but it has been too few days to really see the benefit yet. It will happen. I will get there. I appreciate all your support because I’m not sure I could do this without you all.
Thank you.

960cals and 32g carbs today. Not bad - the excess cals was gin and that is the thing I'm finding very hard to knock on the head. Today was horribly stressful, no real reason I just woke up tense and headachy and the kids were really maithering me all day. I ended up being the sort of snappy shouty mum I really don't want to be. On the plus side I didn't reach for the biscuits, which would be my usual tactic. If I can get rid of the gin too I'll be well on my way. Hoping I feel better tomorrow, for my poor kids' sake!

Well done everyone Flowers

@waterproofed the fast was alright actually. I'd do it again but probably only once a month. I was ready for tea at 7 but not starving. I managed 15k steps (just walking though, no running or Joe Wicks).

It was good to know I can go that long without needing to eat. I'm hoping I will remember that next time I'm tempted to snack or over eat at meal times because I feel like I'm starving.

@Whattheladybirdsaidnext losing weight is so hard isn't it? Especially when you're struggling, it feels like such a chore. I always feel like it's just another job on my list: work, kids, lose a stone, go to Tesco.... it's so much about headspace and I really struggle to get my head in the right place. However, one reason why this plan does feel so good is not necessarily the weight loss, but the control and that comes from the low carbs. If you can get through those tricky first days it will be easier and easier to not be tempted by carbs. I totally understand where you are because I am there too: I am bouncing around in lockdown up to very nearly 11stone (which is overweight bmi) but when I'm good I'm very good and it drops. I started the last thread at 10.3, and this one at 10.13!

For me the key to success is mindset. I feel so good when I'm on plan, when my food is interesting, when I cook new things, when I plan everything and stick to it (I'm great at the planning bit!) and it's mostly that I'm being kind to myself and nourishing myself. I am chronically addicted to sugar; that's become so apparent since being off with everyone, they (particularly my dd) have even said it, that I'm a carb addict. I am finding lockdown especially challenging. It's totally okay to 'mind dump' on this thread, we have all been there!

You've had a great loss, you may be retaining water if totm is imminent? Be kind to yourself Smile

Saw this linked in another thread (about celeriac) and thought I'd post. The article itself is full of ads so I'll post the picture.

The article/recipe said basically you need: something porky, something starchy, something cheesy....then herbs, lemon juice, frying pan.

So eg: chorizo, celeriac, cheese
Or: black pudding, celeriac, cheese
Or: sausage, butternut, cheese...

Cube it all up, sauté in a pan, add seasoning and herbs, squeeze of lemon juice, maybe crack an egg or two in there....

Sounds delicious! I'm Definitely trying this one day this week.

That celeriac thing sounds delish @thenewaveragebear1983 I may try that too.

Weighing in at the end of (proper) week 1
Start 159lbs
Day 8 153lbs
Loss 6lbs

To be fair I did semi start 2 weeks ago so a couple of pounds of that is probs from then. Still I am absolutely delighted! First time I've seen the scales tip under 11st in at least a year. Woop woop!!!

I bloomin' love chorizo and thought this looked like a nice easy tea

So disappointed that I have no chorizo or celeriac bear looks and sounds yummy.
@agteacht I did a lasagne using white cabbage leaves instead of lasagne sheets but it was a bit meh. Cabbage texture didn’t work. I now just do a huge bolognese. I have courgetti and the others pasta.
I’m 10.11.0 this morning, which is my lowest to date. No one did any baking yesterday so that helped! Also no wine but I’m also hitting the gin larry I convince myself it’s not to bad with slimline Schweppes. I’ve not put anything into MFP since lockdown and don’t know how you do it bear all this time!
Going to accompany my youngest on a dog walk during her ‘games’ lesson in a bit. Beautiful sunny day. Will have kale, eggs, toms and seeds for lunch and fir dinner sea bass with peppers, carrots and celery. Prob have one G&T in the garden if it’s a nice evening. If not will try to refrain! Definitely no wine. I need to get back on this after maintaining for the last 8-10 weeks.

Kimlek · 12/05/2020 10:06

As you can see from my chart it’s been important to maintain for a while as last time I got to this weight I piled it back on immediately!

Forgot this one. But need to get back on it now!! It’s getting harder as I don’t look too bad now but my BMI is right on the cusp so need to keep going. A straight 10 would be great but I’ll assess at 10.7

I made an aubergine lasagne last year.... thinly sliced aubergine instead of pasta. But I haven’t bothered making it since... which probably suggests it was a lot of faff (mind you, I don’t like cooking) I do remember thinking the aubergine texture was quite good for the job though.

How tall are you Kimlek? I find it fascinating how the same weight on the same height looks different on different people.
I’m 5’7” and am aiming in my wildest dreams for 10 stone 10. Which on me is skinny. I’m pear shaped... is it the body shape which makes it such an individual thing do you think?

Would lo-dough work in a lasagne? Or one of the supermarkets sells butternut sheets which you could layer up? Or do moussaka instead?

I tried the celeriac/chorizo/cheese combo for lunch today and it was lush. I added too much chorizo; it really does not need that much meat. Super tasty with lemon on top, will remember to add egg next time. Thanks for the recommendation @thenewaveragebear1983

Had some natural yoghurt with sunflower seeds and lemon juice for dessert and have just enough calories left for some chicken soup for supper. I think I do better with a larger lunch and smaller dinner.

Anyone else is like me and does not meal plan? I tend to buy things I like (fish, meat, cheese, lots of leafy veg, stuff for soups) then just see what I fancy on the day. Spontaneity makes me happy.

@Whattheladybirdsaidnext I’m 5ft 6in so now a 14 almost a 12 BUT all my clothes are fitting perfectly; some a bit loose. If/when I get to desired weight I’ll need a new wardrobe!!!
@waterproofed both times were BSD. So Easter 2018 and then Xmas just gone. It’s only a stone each time. I put loads on in summer 2018 as my eldest DD was very badly bullied and it threw me entirely!! The chart makes it look better than it actually is!!

@Whattheladybirdsaidnext I'm also 5'7 and I always naturally sit at the very top end of the bmi scale. I'm currently 10.10 (ish) and size 8-10 although I would love to be 9 something! I am very muscular though, I would actually probably be lighter if I did less exercise. I have always thought I must be quite heavy boned because when I read on MN these what do you weigh threads, there's people my height or taller that are 9.7, 9.2 and I just think how???

Great graphs @kimlek

Here's my graph, from when I got my Fitbit and restarted in jan 2018 (also when I started running). Quite depressingly you can see the moment I dipped below 10 stone at Christmas 2018 after a bout of norovirus! Also, equally depressingly, you can see that my 'average' weight over 2.5 years is only 3lbs higher than what I weigh now!!

If you are a size 8-10 that is very impressive... don’t think I have been that since university. I agree though, I’m always at the top of the BMI scale. I look very slim and am a size 10 (on top at least, 12 on bottom) at 11 stone. I have spent the last year working out as well, lots of strength training, so that will probably have an impact on speed of loss as well as wherever I end up.
It is interesting though....

Ooh the celariac thing looks good. How king do your need to cook it for the celariac to be soft?

Finishing on 842kcal and 22g carbs

Going to do 20 mins on the rowing machine when I can get my daughter to sleep. Took an hour last night so fingers crossed she falls asleep quicker tonight!

I find celeriac takes a surprisingly long time to cook, but then I do like it soft and also I find that it tastes less celery-ish if it's cooked longer.

Closing up today on 1600 cals, and 45g carbs. I was hungry today after running and despite having a good day yesterday, although i did stick to bsd foods. 16k Steps (5.5km run)

Food tomorrow should be egg for lunch, and then pork belly with a braised red cabbage thing I have found, but that will be calorie heavy so must try not to graze during the day. That was my downfall today.

Finished on 1060cal and 18g carbs (the details were wrong on MFP and I didn’t realise until after I had eaten.) as the carbs were so low I don’t think it will be a problem. Just came back from a 5k walk.
