Blood sugar diet and fast800 thread 19

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/05/2020 22:25

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

Morning all! Sorry a couple of crazy work days! I've been being pretty good. Yesterday came in at 635cals and 37g carbs and I did a 4km walk (since I can't run due to tendonitis I wanted to do something), weights again this morning.

Scale is not budging. I'm super frustrated because I always get to this part and it just doesn't want to give. This is only my second week back on it and I'm up 1lb. Wish I knew what my body wanted 😧

@thenewaveragebear1983 Happy belated anniversary!

@Kimlek I had a mental health crisis 3 years ago & I was a day patient with lots of girls like your daughter, they're under so much pressure. There's a very good chance she has PTSD from the bullying (it's hugely common & can go unchecked for years) but if you can speak to gp or camhs there is an amazing therapy called EMDR which can make a huge difference in a very short period of time. Obviously I'm not a psych but might be helpful to look at.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 19/06/2020 09:12

@Kimlek I actually have a friend who is a EMDR specialist hypnotherapist and she does online appointments and hypno sessions, I can PM you her details if you would be interested

Thank you so much pheonix my DD1 hasn’t told me; she told DD2 so if I try to discuss with her she’ll know DD2 has broken her trust. I called the GP but because she’s 16 she has to call them herself. I was hoping they could call her regarding another minor issue she has as an in to discussing MH in general but they won’t. I’m going around in circles. Very frustrating. No one will help unless she attempts suicide and is admitted to hospital. ☹️

Justasecondnow · 19/06/2020 09:40

Hurrah 2lb off!! 12lb total.

Start: 11.1
Week 1: 10.9 -6
Week 2: 10.7 -2
Week 3: 10.5 -2
Week 4: 10.5 -0
Week 5: 10.3 - 2

12lb in 5 weeks. 10.3 is also significant for me as last round of efforts at weight loss about 2 years ago I went from 11.9 to 10.4 w/ 5/2. Then bounced around 10.7 to near 11 stone. Lockdown put me back over 11 so I started this! Hoping to go the distance to my never met 9.7 goal this time.

Also was talking to other half about it and decided to work out a visual representation. 12lb off equates to about two four pint containers of milk. Which seems loads! Maybe a tip for those frustrated if weight loss seems slow. Find a household object of equivalent weight and be amazed! You could post what household item you’ve ‘lost’ if you’re having a not too busy Friday! Grin

bestbees yay for the 9’s! That’s amazing!

And newaveragebear I like your shortbread metaphors... unexploded bombs and curled cobras!

Justasecondnow · 19/06/2020 09:45

Ps. kimlek didn’t see your post before posting. Really difficult situation. Could you maybe take up bears offer and talk to therapist yourself for advice to ‘sell’ it to your DD? maybe she can have therapy without you ever needing to admit you know about the self harm. Sorry if that’s rubbish advice. I’m out of my depth.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 19/06/2020 09:56

@Kimlek I am saying this with the kindest intentions and I'm sorry if it comes out clumsy- I think you should tell her that you know. Make up some story (I don't know, evidence of self harm when sorting washing or something, mother's intuition?) but if it means you can then support her and access help for her then maybe that's what you need to do. I'm sure you have agonised over this a long time and I'm not underestimating the emotional turmoil you must be going through, it must be heartbreaking.

I have no experience of self harm but I was a troubled teen myself, (drugs mostly, and inappropriate relationships as a result) and my parents knew and they never stepped in. My sister told them, repeatedly, and they still never stepped in. I really wish they had. At the time obviously I would have been angry, but I desperately needed to access help that I simply couldn't without their support and I felt like they withheld that help from me by closing their eyes to it. As an adult now, and with a dd the same age as I was, I actually resent them so much more as I can see it with my own eyes as a parent.

I'm not saying your dd will feel like this , I'm just giving my (limited) experience. I hope you and she can find some support to help you through this. Have you considered posting on the teens or mental health boards on here for some advice? They may be able to give you some more solid advice

(Also to echo @Justasecondnow above, her therapy could be entirely confidential once you've directed her to the right place)

Kimlek · 19/06/2020 11:18

Thank you bear I’ve now known for a week and absolutely agree that I need to find a way in. I’m not leaving it. Huge huge thanks to you all! Don’t want to derail this thread. Xx

Cocobox · 19/06/2020 12:55

Kimlek please don’t worry about derailing thread, I just didn’t comment as I haven’t any experience of this but I think you are right to be all over it. You must be slightly in shock even after a week. Bears perspective was very interesting.

bluepixie · 19/06/2020 13:09

Not derailing kimlek and sorry I have no advice...

bluepixie · 19/06/2020 13:10

What is everyone’s fav low carb healthy recipes? I’m off next week and planning lots of cooking.
Gonna make the fast 800 chicken goujons - are they nice? Something we can all eat too which is handy I’ll have salad and DS and DH can have with veg and mash or something.

Justasecondnow · 19/06/2020 13:24

cream

All from BSD book
Halloumi kebabs
Chicken & chorizo casserole
Thai red curry
Mackeral pate
.... not a recipe as such but steak served with grated carrot and courgette, fried in butter W/salad is amazing. Can be on higher side of cals but depends on how much butter & steak you have, So you can adjust depending what you have left allowance wise. It is fairly low carb.

Justasecondnow · 19/06/2020 13:25

Oh garlic in with the courgette & carrot! I’m having it tonight. I’m excited!

ilovemydogandMrObama · 19/06/2020 13:34

@Kimlek - am dealing with a very difficult 13/14 year old at the moment, so solidarity! No experience, but oh my god she knows every single button to push to get a reaction. One of DD1's friends was self harming and is now slowly coming out the other side.

Weighed in this morning at 10st 1lb, so have gone up a pound but seems to be this one pound that goes up and goes down. Confused

thenewaveragebear1983 · 19/06/2020 15:52

Have you looked at the recipe thread @cream123 ? Lots of ideas on there too!
I've been really impressed with the fast800 book, even the things that I've not been too sure about from the recipe have been really tasty

OP posts:
bluepixie · 19/06/2020 16:36

Added haloumi and veg bake to the menu next week. And tmrw gonna make the chorizo and aubergine one.
Hope everyone having good days x

thenewaveragebear1983 · 19/06/2020 16:56

Recipes I tend to do are the halloumi bake, beef rendang, lamb rogan josh, lamb keema, tofu in a peanut butter and soy sauce marinade.

I've also being doing chicken dipped into a small amount of almond flour and Parmesan to make like a crispy chicken.

Had a takeaway coffee today for the first time since lockdown and starting this way of eating at end of March (from Costa) and i actually couldn't finish it, it was far too sweet! I used to be a takeaway coffee addict... but have been drinking coffee with a dash of cream instead and my taste buds seem to have changed.

Kimlek · 19/06/2020 17:20

I love you all 🥰
cream I have every recipe book imaginable.... Initially I got the little paperback BSD book that has recipes in the back & they’re ok but quite off with calorie count etc. I then got 8week BSD recipe (by his wife) which I really liked last year but have become bored with. I now have his fast800 recipe book which initially I thought was a bit carby BUT the recipes are good. It’s by his wife and Justine Pattinson, which made me giggle as I have quite a collection of Justine pattinson’s recipe books! Are you veggie cream if so Justine Pattinson May do a veg cookbook. All hers are low cal but not necessarily low carb. But do have values for everything.
It’s going to be HOT (like 28/29/30’c) next week so you may not fancy cooking. I quite like doing cooking (or serious prepping) in am when it’s cooler so it’s out of the way and done with and then cooking/reheating in evening. Albeit this week I’m thinking some Linda McCartney veggie burgers (never had veggie burgers) and salads. A lot of salads and picky bits as if it is that hot I will not want be in our greenhouse of a kitchen.
Maybe treat yourself to the fast800 book for your bday! 😉

Justasecondnow · 19/06/2020 18:08

Oh cream I didn’t realise you didn’t have the BSD recipe book. I can post the ones I listed in the recipe thread if you want?

Postmanbear · 19/06/2020 18:33

Yes please @justasecondnow!

Justasecondnow · 19/06/2020 19:06

Done! I would feel guilty posting stuff as I guess there might be copy write issues (I’m clueless about that stuff) but I buy all the mm books and it might make someone buy it too!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 19/06/2020 19:21

Bit of a crap day for me as I've just not really got going today. Had sardines in pepper for lunch, spicy chicken and courgette fritters for dinner...but the cobra bit me and I had a slice of millionaires shortbread too! It's all gone now though so temptation removed.

Tomorrow we are hiking, and I'm actually going to run in the morning as well because I've had a few days off (which has been lovely actually). We'll take a Picnic lunch so that's sorted. Then popping in to my parents in the afternoon to see them for Father's Day. Not sure what we'll have for dinner.

I'm a bit annoyed with myself that I've started the weekend on a duffer, but in some ways that's good as now it's done I can start fresh tomorrow
