Blood sugar diet and fast800 thread 19

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/05/2020 22:25

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

Yay - 3lbs gain earlier in this week gone. Back to 10.5. Never have I been so happy for a stay the same. Just got to keep a handle on the weekends like everyone mentioned. It’s going to be tough as I am going to two socially distant birthdays when I’m the only guest. So feels churlish to turn down cake. I feel I’m heading towards a relaxed weekend gain and a week of losing it. So a lot of effort to stay still! I hope if I up exercise and really try not to let a few treats snowball and get right back on it on Monday maybe I can make it work.

kimlek it’s great you were able to maintain just in BSD principles and no calorie counting. I’m the same way with breakfast too.

Re. The periods. I have coil so barely have them. First 10 days or so of this diet had a stop/start one. I’m sure I read something about that can happen when losing weight as oestrogen is stored in fat? I can’t source that though so might be bollocks!

Also yes to boredom eating bear you just articulated what I do re the boredom/tasks/eating loop that I didn’t even know I was doing. I had intended to go back to headspace and do 10 mins meditating before I ate stuff I know I shouldn’t (jam) but haven’t yet. I guess changing habits/patterns is hard.

bluepixie · 12/06/2020 13:46

Plan today
Cap - whole whole milk was delicious
Salmon salad
Bean chilli
Will be 700 cals but 50 carbs. But good carbs and no sugar so I’m letting it slide and mainly from the bean chilli....

First time in about 2 months I haven’t fallen off plan! I’m usually treating myself to cake gin or biscuits come Friday 1pm. Really need to avoid all those things ow will be another gain then I’ll spend all week loosing it again! It’s terrible weather so I’m less inclined to drink as I prefer a sunny drink in the garden!

Setting my self a goal to be 10.7 by Father’s Day....might be a push in a week to loose 2 Now bmi closer to 24 but let’s see!

@thenewaveragebear1983 hope u have a better day today! Xxx

@ilovemydogandMrObama keep going. Lots on here plateau and then it starts moving again. Your prob getting closer to your idea/slim/usual weight maybe so ur body is trying to resist it! U will go past it if you keep going. Good idea about not being too ott with teenager around must be hard though! I’m weighing everything!

Cocobox · 12/06/2020 15:10

I know it’s odd to join on a Friday but here I am. Thread 19 is impressive! I put new batteries in my scales this morning and have gained 11 lbs in lockdown, is that a record? I needed to lose half a stone anyway so that’s 18 lbs to lose.

I’ve had wine every evening for weeks and DH makes bread in the bread maker every day. Felt so terrible today, tummy huge so I am ready to make some changes. The food on this plan looks good. Hoping to lose most of it in 5 weeks when we possibly go on holiday.

B Coffee
L Celery soup
D Chilli con carne (no rice)
Confident that’s less than 800 kc.
30 mins on cross trainer ✔️

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/06/2020 15:22

@ilovemydogandmrobama2 I have a teenage dd in the house too. It's really interesting that she has actually noticed how addicted to carbs I am- she has a sweet tooth like me but she can stop, where as she has seen in me that unstoppable addictive eating behaviour that she doesn't have. So she understands a bit better about why I say I won't have certain foods (eg bread/sweets) because they set me off. My boys are younger and I just tell them I don't like rice or chips, I just have extra vegetables and they seem to accept that. They sometimes choose to do that as well which isn't really a bad thing.

Kitchen closed at
850 and 50 carbs
Happy with that as don’t think I’ve ever managed a Friday on plan!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/06/2020 16:54

@Cream123 that's early! Sounds like you've had a successful day

I've just totted up my anticipated cals for the day and although it won't be 800 cals, I could still come in at a reasonably low amount and 60g carbs and that includes a glass of wine or two.

Planning for tomorrow is slightly harder: we have been having takeaways during lockdown but I've put my foot down this week and said no. Dh had suggested the kids choose a ready meal type thing each (he's cooking, can you tell?!) and therefore I can choose what I want. I'm thinking maybe a nice lamb steak and asparagus...

OP posts:
nibdedibble · 12/06/2020 17:11

It's the weekend! Everything will be the same as all the other days!!
But still, there's an urge to have a beer and a massive bag of crisps...
NO! Not doing it. Be strong.

bluepixie · 12/06/2020 18:00

I always eat at 430/5 it suits me better and then I have brekkie at 9 so I do my 16 hours that way....at weekends I try be nice to dh and have dinner with him
That means I snack at 430 coz peckish (body clock set now) then I eat a take away with wine
So today I refused (he’s already chosen his wine tonight) and was antisocial and not eating with him.
It’s boring And not very social but as DS is only 2.5 I Bascailly eat my dinner with him! Working in lockdown but usually we go for dinner and eat and more normal times....

bluepixie · 12/06/2020 19:26

The wine is delicious
Not looking at it!!

Justasecondnow · 12/06/2020 21:10

Hi all,

Friday’s totting up:

aubergine and tomato stack w/ pesto and smidge of cheese. 400 cal , 12 carb.
Steak & slaw 408, 10.
Plus milk 100 cal, 10 carbs,
10 pistachios - 40 cals.
Adds up to - 950 cals & 32 carbs. Plus 2 homemade chicken nuggets & 4 oven chips. I have no clue what they amount to, but I’m def a bit over 1000 I think.

Ok for Friday. Sorry for the dull food post. But listing it here helps keep me on track. Also thanks to whoever suggested Aubergines with w bit of pesto. Yum.

Ps. Wine’s not tempting me.... something sweet on the other hand... sigh.

PhoenixMama · 12/06/2020 21:11

Well day went a wee bit off the rails - neighbour bought cake over and she's the type that wants to know you ate it, also I injured myself on my run the other day and didn't heal enough so got 5 mins into my run today and had to stop. Ugh. Have picked BSD friendly meals for the weekend so hoping I can just treat it like any other day!!

Scared to see the scale in the morning but it will be what it will be!

Kimlek · 12/06/2020 22:17

Hello cocobox Friday’s a good a day as any to join. Well done cream just a second and need a holiday
Absolutely exhausted today and annoyed that I’m waking at 5am last few mornings. Had a couple of coffees but no bfast. Lunch was a stuffed pepper (bolognese), dinner was the chicken chorizo. I’ve had extra olives, tomatoes etc. But zero booze.
Been quite busy today which helped. I agree re the lockdown apathy but it’s understandable that we don’t fancy doing those mind numbing chores.
Closing kitchen at 830 but 58 carbs

fufulina · 13/06/2020 07:29

👋 lockdown apathy + bouncing around the same weight + being at an ‘acceptable’ size = danger danger!

Coming to the end of week 6 and so far (day 6) have lost and gained the same weight a few times. 0.5kg down so far this week. Have done a few one meal a day days, skipped our weekly takeaway (had goats cheese frittata instead and was delicious) and continuing with 12-6 eating window and no snacking.

I’m am firmly in the Danger Zone. I’m looking so much better. Weight back at my previous “I need to lose weight” end point. Boobs back under control. Skin lovely and clear. Have a ‘skinny heid’ as my favourite Scottish friend told me (no longer like a hamster). And no booze, snacks, or anything remotely refined carbs for 6 weeks. The edge of the wagon is perilously close. BUT - my BMI is still over 28. I am still fat (if not as fat) so will keep on. And this thread is fundamental to that. Accountability!

I read something the other day (possibly this thread, possibly the BSD forum) which was talking about that gnawing feeling for ‘something to eat’. That restless feeling, even after a good meal, that has you furiously scrolling through carbs and cals and potential satisfaction in your head. And the realisation that no food will do it. That gnawing is the feeling of an emotion previously addressed with food. Quite the epiphany! To add to the epiphany list!

About to embark on research into leptin - am sure there was something about carb refeeding after a few weeks v low carb and leptin? Will research.

In the meantime, hold the line! We’re all doing brilliantly. Thank you all for posting and sharing.

Bestbees · 13/06/2020 07:52

Hi all. I love reading everyone's posts, and am working my way back through old threads for inspo. Yesterday was a planned for treat day and should have come in around 1000. I ermmmm stuffed my face. I think probably more like 1800. But. All bsd allowed food (though too much red wine and dark dark chocolate). And I know why I did it. I was bored. So I need to make sure that if that is the case I throw myself into something. Anyway scale damage actually not bad at all, (3/4lb). Straight back on it today.
Lunch: omlette and salad
Dinner: melanzane parmigiana and more salad.
Here is to a successful weekend!

bluepixie · 13/06/2020 08:18

Morning people!
@bestbees I eat when bored too. And yest I managed to sit with Dh while he had wine and I stuck to 900 cals (I had some dark choc after I posted!) because I had had a good day! I wasn’t bored so didn’t fill my night with wine and fun new takeaway and pudding and a film to make the day more interesting. We had been on a lovely walk in the am and Had a lovely time and DS loved the Forrest. So I was happy and not bored! Plan today is to do the same but the sun is out so will be harder

@fufulina well done on loosing so much weight. I agree when I feel better I stop too. Hence I got to 10.9 about a month ago and went up and down and up and down as at this weight my clothes fit and my bmi is healthy. But I really need to get lower so I have more wriggle room and so I loose more of my tummy fat.....which is why I struggled. But I’m feeling focussed again and this thread def helps . So many on here doing a much better job that me it makes me think “we’ll surely I have enough willpower if all these other ladies do”

Good sat everyone.
My plan
Coffee 2 heck sausages and spinach
Feta salad home made
Chicken stir fry home made
1 gin and slimline in garden
850 cals and 30 grams carbs . Will report back post gin as it may be tempting to then raid the fridge!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/06/2020 10:05

Morning all

@fufulina that's a good epiphany. I love it when jigsaw pieces sort of slot into place and I'm like "oh yeah, of course!". One thing on my hypno that I listen to is to say "I am enough" not "I've had enough" when you're finished eating or when you're feeling yourself reaching for things because you feel 'wanty' not hungry. I really try to do this because I am definitely eating to fill an emotional void sometimes.
The leptin thing is interesting too; I've read a lot about leptin resistance before but it's never really stuck with me. I'd be interested to hear what you discover. I do definitely find that when I'm having a good run of BSD, after about 4 days I just have a day where I cannot stop eating, and I wonder if that is leptin related? It's like come hell or high water my body is going to claw back every lost calorie!

Feeling ok if a bit meh this morning. Dh going to Sainsbury's for our meal tonight and I've asked him for a nice lamb steak, which I'll season and have with salad, plus strict instructions to no get me any pudding. I might have a couple of gin &slimline tonight but no wine. Therefore might might actually achieve an 800 cals day today which would be something of a miracle at the weekend.

We're keeping busy today too; no running but instead I'm going to get outside to do some gardening and generally be out in the sunshine after these miserable rainy days we've had.

Happy Saturday everyone!

Quick question if I may ?
DP has just returned from the shop with White Sourdough . Does it need to be brown sourdough to stay on plan or is any sourdough okay ?

Cocobox · 13/06/2020 12:10

Morning new buddies, thank you for the welcome.

Sorry collywobble I don’t know about the sourdough.

I did not stick to day 1 plan but considering how much I ate and drank the days before it was a big improvement. I drank wine but a lot less and had rice with the chilli and a small piece of bread. I am confident my appetite will readjust. Took a look in the mirror naked and there is a lot of blubber, mainly on my tummy. Measured waist.

Weighed and lost 1 lb.

B Coffee
L Chicken, salad leaves, tomatoes, feta
D Chicken and salad (inc small portion of lentils)
One glass of wine.
30 mins cross trainer.

I don’t have a sweet tooth, wine is my nemesis.

I am not going to count calories and grams of carbs (hats off to those who do) but just try and keep to the allowed list of foods and lots of salad and veg. See how it goes! Hope that’s ok.

Have a great day everyone.

bluepixie · 13/06/2020 12:21

@thenewaveragebear1983 dh sent new to the shops to get pudding as my parents r coming over today for a socially distant wave in the garden. I came back with bean sprouts for stir fry and some olives Grin
I’m not letting him anu pudding if I can’t! And I know once I have a gin I’ll eat it all so best to not have it in house! If I get the munchies I’ve got some carrots and that’s about it. My dh is super skinny and eats everything not fair!

Yes would be a miracle if I stick to it today I’ve not managed a 800 sat ever!

Lunch time! X

thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/06/2020 13:14

@collywobble I'm not sure about sourdough either. Is it made with regular flour? I suppose whole meal flour is marginally better than white but to be honest there's not much difference. Things like the very coarse dark rye or spelt breads are better if you really want bread

OP posts:
PhoenixMama · 13/06/2020 13:24

Hi all! Weigh in this morning was no change again but then I came on so that makes sense. Feel crappy now but hopefully will see the scale move in a few days.

@collywobble Bread is generally not on the plan at all but if you count it then it's fine whatever. We all have our things we love!

I am in awe of those of you who can drink alcohol and stay on 800 - any drinking just sends me right off plan!

@Cocobox One thing that might help is recording all you eat for the first two weeks but not restricting the cals. I think what most of us find when we start recording is that we are eating a LOT more cals than we think we are - even if the food is on plan!

We're going to see friends for a socially distanced chat later so will have to be really careful about snacking - they are lovely but it always decends into booze and snacks and I really need to stay on plan!

collywobble · 13/06/2020 13:56

@thenewaveragebear1983 thank you I'll just swerve it to be on the safe side I think.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/06/2020 16:11

@collywobble I do have a recipe for a focaccia style bread that's made with almond flour and it does toast acceptably, will post in a bit

OP posts:
thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/06/2020 16:20

Here you go:

For the focaccia I made it as this recipe but added loads of Mediterranean herbs, sundried tomatoes and chilli. It was really good. I am tempted to use the base, omit the olives and add Stilton and walnuts as well.
