Blood sugar diet and fast800 thread 19

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/05/2020 22:25

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/06/2020 07:53

Morning all. Feel rubbish this morning, went to bed with a headache and woken up with it too. Not sure that it's carb flu, it's a proper headache which is unusual for me. I'm 10.9.5 this morning, so have bounced up a pound or two from yesterday (I did eat a lot last night). Just posting this really to reassure anyone that these fluctuations are totally normal - water weighs!

Off for a run shortly, then a day of domestic jobs and I really must do some gardening at some point. So probably lots of steps. Menu all planned. Dh had his wine delivery yesterday so inevitably he will he having a red wine tonight but I'm determined not to drink today and would like to remain alcohol feee all weekend (but I doubt this will happen) - however, I am going to track and count my alcohol consumption rather than just having it in addition to my food.

Have a good day all

Morning all! Sounds like restrained and sensible 'binges' to me. There are just going to be days when we need more calories and if they are on principle I think it's pretty good going of us!

Bike ride last night after dinner which was lovely, haven't been out on my bike for ages. Expecting to find this morning hungrier for it so heading out for a walk with the kids to help distract myself!
Food for today:
Lunch brie and olive salad
Dinner daal and roast aubergine with spinach.

Justasecondnow · 11/06/2020 09:03

Morning everyone- and don’t feel bad about posting lots kimlek The more content for me to read and help with focus the better. I confess in my first weeks I used to read the old threads for motivation... I felt a bit stalker-y of you all though!!

Hope those feeling sub par feel better. Hopefully good days for us all. Week 4 weigh in tomos. Still hoping for that stay the same after struggling a bit earlier this week. We shall see!

bluepixie · 11/06/2020 11:14

@Kimlek well done u. That’s great u dropped again. (I am not Envy. ) :)

@thenewaveragebear1983 yes my downfall is alchol at weekends then munchies. Dh has been told he can’t drink either this weekend so hopefully I won’t . I’m feeling very focussed after all these weight losses on here so I KNOW I’ll be good this weekend. And worst case I can tx myself with berries yoghurt etc rather than a sugar binge like I usually do!

My
Aim was to be my wedding weight by my 10 th wedding anniversary. Not sure I’ll make it it’s still 9 pounds away and only 1 month! But maybe close to it?!?

PhoenixMama · 11/06/2020 12:22

Morning all - well down 2lbs this morning making me 3 lbs from my lowest weight. I haven't been able to stay below 177 in the last year (I think that's 12.6? As a Canadian I never understood stones!)

First goal is 168 (12 stone) and then we'll see. Getting under 12 would be amazing but I'm 5'8 and the only time I was 11stone was in my 20's way pre-children.

Also think I'm due on which is obviously not helping mood or appetite!

collywobble · 11/06/2020 16:33

I've had an afternoon of weakness . I'd been with my daughter unpacking everything from her university home and taken my lunch to eat on the way which was fine . I've just got home and stuck my head in the fridge completely starving and eaten cheese and coleslaw out of the packet and a spoonful if Greek yoghurt . I so needed fuel in my body as I'm exhausted. Technically it's probably only going to take me a couple of 100 calories over today but it felt like the old me where I would scavenge in the fridge for whatever craving I needed. Luckily there's not much in the fridge at the moment or things could have been much worse . My weight loss is slow enough without me causing more problems though so I'm feeling annoyed with myself .

bluepixie · 11/06/2020 17:21

Well done @PhoenixMama that’s great hope that motivated you....

Kitchen closed at 830 and 29 carbs. Am full and satisfied so hopefully no more!
My salmon salad was delicious.

Dh has made a 3 bean chilli for dinner tmrw so will be a carby day but it’s all good carbs and I’ll keep rest of the day carbs non existent

thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/06/2020 17:40

I've had a thoroughly crappy day, I feel Absolutely exhausted for some reason. My run this morning was horrible, kids have been vile, had ridiculous team meeting for work where I could hear them scrapping downstairs all the way through, tried to have a lie down and got woken up by dh clattering around. So you can imagine my humour

I ended up eating a few breadsticks and 2 hard boiled eggs. It's very hard to binge on HB eggs it seems. Then took the kids out for a long walk, probably 5km, and have arrived home now, although I feel like I could eat the entire world right now. I still need to log in to work this evening and teach as well.

Still, could have gone worse I guess. I feel like maybe I'm coming down with something perhaps, so hopefully will feel better tomorrow.

ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 11/06/2020 18:26

thenewaveragebear1983 - think we had the same day, other than the run. Had really important team meeting today, told the kids they needed to be quiet for what, an hour. Of course they decided to have a fight. All of them.

Made them lasagne, and so fed up, had a bit of cauliflower and couldn't be bothered.

So tired, and grumpy.

Justasecondnow · 11/06/2020 20:18

Forgot to say thanks for the maintenance thoughts people shared previously. I’m a way off but can’t wait to be there!

Today’s effort
Eggs, avocado, grilled tomato & mayo - 448 cals & 13 carbs
Paprika chicken kebabs from BSD book + mayo -300 cals, 12 carbs
Milk for tea - 75 cals & 7 carb
Total = 823 cals & 32 carb
Except... I reckon my chicken breast was bigger than the BSD recipe one. And I just had a tea spoonful of jam (wtf!) and two cashew nuts. I can’t be arsed counting up. So I guess more like 950 or something.

Well done on your loss phoenixmama and don’t be too hard on yourself collywobble at least it wasn’t a spoonful of jam! And hope the tired and grumpy feel better tomos. It’s chucking it down here... if it’s the same for you maybe that’s a contributing factor to bad moods.

Kimlek · 12/06/2020 05:53

pheonix the whole stone pound thing is weird as theres 14 pounds to a stone. Kg is much more straight forward!
just a second now when I aimed to maintain over March, April, May I didn’t count calories but did stick mostly to BSD foods. I still weighed myself regularly to check wasn’t going over 11st but I also skipped bfast as a lot as that’s kind of my normal.
This morning 10.6.6 (146.6lbs or 66.5kg).
I’m beginning to do my dog walks with friends (at a distance obvs) but a bit disappointed no one has noticed! I think it’s because I’ve still got quite a bit of a tummy.

bluepixie · 12/06/2020 07:19

Really want a lattee for brekkie this am! Nice warm one with frothy milk!

Kimlek well done! Ur smashing this :)

bluepixie · 12/06/2020 07:39

10.9 finally again !

Bestbees · 12/06/2020 07:41

Morning all!
Sorry everyone had rubbish days yesterday. I had an upset tummy all afternoon, maybe from brie? Or is this a side effect? I then ate a few extra cals in cheese, apple and cashews as I felt faint. However another 1/2lb off so silver lining.

Today I am planning a higher calories day.
Lunch: mackerel pate and veg sticks
Might need a snack as I will eat dinner later so if so will have some cheese and olives
Dinner: rib eye steak, rochefort cheese, roasted butternut squash and tomato salad. Red wine.
Have a better day everyone and let's hope this weekend doesn't detail us too much!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/06/2020 07:58

Weeeellllll, I had a shit day yesterday. I don't really like the term 'I hit a wall' but that's actually how I felt yesterday. And for my efforts? Yeah about 3lbs back on. I really should stop weighing myself after these type of days because it doesn't do me any good at all.

I don't feel so completely exhausted today though. I'm going for a short run this morning and then will do another short walk/run with ds for his c25K. For dinner tonight I'm having a nice ribeye steak with a salad, and for lunch I'm going to try to keep as light as I can.

The weekend looming, as always, fills me with dread slightly. I don't know why I always feel like the weekends totally derail me, they are exactly the same as the week at the moment!

Hope for a better day today!

whensmynexthol1day · 12/06/2020 08:12

Haven't posted for a while- had a couple of weeks of yo-yo-ing up and down which I'm rubbish at dealing with. Had my period (coupled with some hormonal decisions I terms of food!) so that probably explains it - although it seems to be stubbornly staying put which is annoying- has anyone else found their periods have gone a bit crazy on this diet?

Although looking at the actual numbers I have lost 0.8kg over two weeks which whilst not exactly stellar is hardly a plateau so I need to just push on through!

Finally in the 9s now - 62.9kg this morning so that's 11.6kg gone and only 5.8 to go. I can see real changes in my body shape which is very encouraging and I have a healthy hip to waist ratio finally! So all good things.

Like you say though @newaveragebear the weekends can be a killer. It's like there's a psychological switch that goes on which tells me I can relax a little bit. But all I end up doing is reversing most of the good work I've done in the rest of the week! And frustratingly I eat things that I think I fancy and then realise that I don't even enjoy them- I had a chocolate mini roll the other week as I was really craving one and a combination of shitty Cadbury's chocolate and the fact that i have got used to so much lower levels of sugar meant I didn't enjoy it and it really wasn't worth it!

agteacht · 12/06/2020 08:38

Sorry to hear there were a few bad days and despite the weekend coming it's still possible to stay largely on plan, a glass of wine does not kill it!!

@whensmynexthol1day that's a super loss so you should definitely not feel you've plateau'd!

nibdedibble · 12/06/2020 09:30

Hello everyone, I too had a bit of a crappy day although I did manage to stick again to 16:8...but calories came in at about 1500 so I'm not getting too smug. I've miraculously managed not to put anything on but will be needing a good 5k walk to get any more off I think.

I am really struggling with motivation long term (in life) as the lockdown goes on! So so many things I could be doing but meh. Sure I'm not alone!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/06/2020 09:34

@nibdedibble oh god, me too. The first few weeks were ok but now it's really dragging on and on. I'm tired of it now. It really doesn't help an emotional eater either, because boredom is one of the worst things for eating I find.

OP posts:
Bestbees · 12/06/2020 10:12

We are so done here too! Shielding my husband so we have been super limited. I miss my work! The kids bloody love being at home though, and I think it will be a nightmare trying to get them back to school.
I work all weekend whilst husband has the kids so it's not too bad for me.i find that I want to eat when I am cross. I swear it is because my mum would distract us with food if I was grumpy as a kid!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/06/2020 10:19

It's the internal conflict between "oh god I'm sooooo bored " and "oh god, there's a million things I could /should do (insert list of mind numbing but essential household chores)" and it plays out in my head over and over and over until eventually I shut it up with food.

OP posts:
PhoenixMama · 12/06/2020 11:05

Hi all - feeling the same as the rest of you this week. Very immobilised. I'm working on an exciting work project but motivation is super low. Someone mentioned their period on this diet - mine's been fine on the diet but during lockdown it's all over the place.

No loss overnight despite being good yesterday but will hold my nerve! Not a lot planned today so need to think about that so I don't graze myself off the charts!

whensmynexthol1day · 12/06/2020 12:13

@PhoenixMama that was me. Maybe it's a lockdown thing for me too then? Would make sense.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 12/06/2020 13:15

Feel fairly stuck at 10 st 1 lb. Have been here for about a week which is really frustrating. Have exercised, drank more water, changed eating times such as having main meal at noon rather in the evening.

Am going to have a curry with the family this evening - Chicken tikka, and maybe a small portion of dhal.

Trying not to be phobic about food either with a teenage girl in the house...
