Blood sugar diet and fast800 thread 19

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/05/2020 22:25

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

Ok today’s eating w/ cals and carbs.

Broccoli bacon w/ mushrooms- 430 and 4
Fish and chorizo parcels - 270 and 2
50g green beans - 16 and 3.5
Knob butter - 34 and 0
150ml semi skim milk for tea and coffee - 75 and 7

Doing this is def good as stopped me swiping bites of stuff that add up. Total cal 826, carbs 17. Allegedly! Reliant upon BSD book and my maths! To be honest I’m sure it’s a bit higher as for example in book it just says cod fillet/chorizo w/out weight, and for the cals to be so low they must be teeny tiny pieces. But hopefully close enough.

Ps. That is a photogenic kitten!

PhoenixMama · 09/06/2020 20:57

Oh ladies, we just had one of those doorstep photos taken and my stomach looks so awful - I think it's the angle & the way the dress hangs but it's so bad I'm crying in the bathroom. I feel absolutely mortified.

bluepixie · 09/06/2020 21:08

Oh @PhoenixMama please don’t cry. :(

Your on this plan and already making great steps to be healthier and have the body you want. We all here to help!!!

Also rem ur your own worst critic. No one else will see u like that.

I know this is weird but once I’m loosing weight I become more critical of my weight / cant bel how big I am / don’t feel like I look any better. Which is bizzare....

Hugs xxxxx

Postmanbear · 09/06/2020 21:33

@PhoenixMama I’m really sorry you’re upset. Photos can be so unflattering, I’m sure a slightly different pose would have made you look loads better. 💐

Justasecondnow · 09/06/2020 21:48

Oh no don’t cry. One bad photo doesn’t mean you look bad. You are not the photo! Sorry I don’t know if that makes sense but someone said similar to me when I saw a bad photo of myself and was like ugh I’m so ugly and they made that point and it resonated.

Algiz · 09/06/2020 22:21

@PhoenixMama I can’t bear to have anyone take photos of me, I’m ok taking them myself in the mirror but you can go through all the ones you don’t like and delete them cant you, it’s so upsetting when someone catches something you’re insecure about in a photo - which I doubt anyone else would even pick up on looking at it but it’s amplified to you as it’s something you’re sensitive about if that makes sense.
You’re all so inspiring and I’m learning a lot from everyone here, although I feel I’ve been on a diet forever, it’s starting to feel more a ‘way of life’ than just what I’m shoving in my mouth, feels much healthier for my mental wellbeing as well as the scales!
Quite excited to finish my 12 weeks of Fast 800 and have a couple of higher calorie days though if I’m honest, I’m missing being able to have a good feed after a long walk!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/06/2020 22:40

Ah @PhoenixMama , sorry you're upset. An unflattering photo can be upsetting but you know that you can make this plan work and achieve your goals

I'm closing the kitchen today quite high on 1400 cals and 53g carbs, but I did do 21k steps (run, then run couch to 5 with ds, then loads of gardening etc) so I hope not too much damage. I didn't snack, I just added an extra meal of avocado and cheese and ham. I've not grazed at all which is a revelation for me, and I'm feeling good. Went for a chat in my friends garden this evening, the first since lockdown, and it was so nice for a bit of normality!

Tomorrow, no running for me. I'm going to do my yoga and a hiit workout. Food will be eggs for lunch, and dinner will be pork mince and asparagus stir fry from the fast800 book. Should hopefully come in at 800 if all goes to plan.

@PhoenixMama - I saw a reflection of myself about a month ago and was fairly horrified which is why we don't have full length mirrors in the house Smile. Photos can be very unrepresentative though so please don't think a terrible photo is how you actually look to others.

Closed the kitchen on 750.

Seem to be stuck on 10st 1lb. Hmm which is so depressing as have been sticking to low calorie, went for 3 mile walk with DCs yesterday and ignored the chocolate in the cupboard

bluepixie · 10/06/2020 07:53

Morning guys.
@PhoenixMama hope ur ok xxx

Right must be on plan today. I’ve told told she no wine no date night no take away this weekend! And now I’ve said it on here I have to do it!

Good days everyone

Ps has anyone had smoked salmon on toast with takini and miso on the bread?! Sounds intriguing

Bestbees · 10/06/2020 07:54

Can't keep up with all the chat!

Suffice to say photos are bastards, and it is so horrible when you see a photo of yourself and hate it. I am sure it was unflattering not realistic.
Yesterday was the first evening I didn't feel hungry so that's great, hoping that continues. Another 3/4 lb off this morning so please. I am weighing everyday but happy to see a few fluctuations as long as it is steadily down.

Food for today:
Asparagus soup with an egg on the side for lunch followed by a pear
Dinner sausages, lentil, tomato and onion traybake with spinach.

Good luck everyone Grin

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/06/2020 07:55

Weighed in this morning at 10.7.6 so another almost 1lb off.

Kimlek · 10/06/2020 08:23

pheonix hope you’re feeling more positive today. I delete photos of me all the time. It looks like I don’t go on holidays with the kids. Always look awful in them. I’m sure we are much lovelier in real life.
Errr cream bread????? Ps has anyone had smoked salmon on toast with takini and miso on the bread?! Sounds intriguing and where on Earth have you found that recipe?
I’m static this am which is fine. It’s the G&T every night holding me back but....
I’m going on a big fast dog walk this am; then taking my youngest on a bike ride to meet her friend for a birthday socially distanced picnic IF the rain holds off. Not sure what I’m putting in the picnic yet. Dinner will be sea bass or trout depending on expiry dates with stir fry veg. And I’ll try really really hard to be alcohol free! My calories have been ok but the carbs have been 60 ish,

PhoenixMama · 10/06/2020 08:50

Thanks for the kind comments. I'm hoping its an unflattering pose but it's killed my confidence even further. Do you think I'd be unreasonable to ask her not to share it on social media? I have so few nice photos of DD and I ,and I thought this would be a great way to have a nice one and now I feel it's ruined.

And to top it off, despite drinking tons of water yesterday and being under 800 I've lost nothing overnight. I'm supposed to run today (I probably should) but def don't feel like it.

If I do breakfast will be 2 eggs & 1 piece of toast, lunch is salad with ham and dinner is tandoori salmon with roasted cauliflower.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/06/2020 09:11

@PhoenixMama I would certainly ask whoever took it not to share it on SM if you don't want it there.

I hate photographs of myself and even more so I hate it when people share them (either on sm or even just when family display unflattering photos in their homes - dm, mil) my mil has a picture of me, taken at my wedding (not an official wedding photo, taken by a guest) and it's actually awful. I tell her this often but she refuses to remove it.

bluepixie · 10/06/2020 09:54

@Kimlek
I have this low carb bread - it’s only 3.8g a slice :) and I have smoked salmon which needs eating so I looked up a recipie and it came out with
White miso and Thani mixed. Spread on toast
Top with salmon
?? Was thinking about it for dinner tonight with some spinach on side but sounds weird!

nibdedibble · 10/06/2020 11:21

Hello everyone, can I join in? I'm a horrible weight at the moment, and sliding into menopause so it's really not easy. I bought the BSD book when it came out and I'm ok with the what's-in-the-diet part, I need exercise though, and encouragement to do that and the 800 cals.

For the past week and a bit I've been doing 16:8 (surprisingly easy) and for 3 weeks I've been doing Pilates 3x week which has made me feel so much better. I do eat quite healthily (the odd Magnum Blush) and cook a lot but am prone to pasta of course.

Last week I weighed 225lbs which is 16st1. I'm 5'8" and that gives me a BMI of 34.1 - obese and size 18.

This week I'm 220lbs /BMI 33.3 so a step in the right direction. I would like to be about 10st7 which is a size 12 for me. I'm not sure this is realistic at my age so I'd be happy with 11st7/size 14 tbh.

We're having pasta tonight, dh is cooking and he's making a sauce he's been looking forward to for ages, so I guess I won't be no-carbing it today. Everything else is in place though!! I really need this, I can't be 50 and breathless and not able to put my knickers on without a palaver!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/06/2020 11:23

@Cream123 I'd do scrambled egg and smoked salmon on your low carb toast, I'm not a huge fan of miso!

Welcome @nibdedibble!

Uhtredwaere · 10/06/2020 12:53

Hi all, hope it's ok if I join!

I've been doing fast 800 for two weeks now. My starting weight was 13st 3 and this morning I was 12st 8. I've also started running so think that might be helping too.

I'm starting to get bored of the same foods as I'm eating a lot of eggs and chicken breast. For lunch today I wanted to make a pizza wrap, which is just a plain wrap, tomato puree and some mozzarella. MFP tells me this should come in about 350 calories but I'm worried it's too high in sugar and carbs for fast 800? Or is it ok as long as I stay under 800?

Thanks guys Smile

Bestbees · 10/06/2020 12:57

Welcome!

I know that carb counting is popular. But as you are new on the diet and loosing weight well I personally would go for it. Keep in your calories obviously. And then take a careful look at how it effect you- do you end up hungrier? It is against the plan but I think each person has to make their own decisions to keep it sustainable.

Alternatives: pizza omlette? Mushroom as.a.base? Aubergine as a base?

Having said that, for me, I prefer to avoid carbs like that at the moment as I think it actually makes it harder.

Bestbees · 10/06/2020 13:00

When I really fancy pizza I also like melanzane parmigiana without the bread crumbs which is delicious!

agteacht · 10/06/2020 13:10

Sorry @PhoenixMama to hear that upset you. I would also say no to social media, think that's totally reasonable whether you like the photo or not!

Hi to the newcomers :)

Week 11 weigh in for me this morning and the third morning in a row where I have weighed in under 10 stone so I feel comfortable to finally log it as my official week 11 weight!

9st 13.6lb, total loss over the 11 weeks of 21.6lbs and happily now 40lb off my pregnancy weight which is nice because it's coming up to DDs 6 month birthday!

I am aiming for 9st10 or 11 order to give myself some breathing space under 10 stone but happy now to have reached this target.

nibdedibble · 10/06/2020 13:34

Hello and thanks for the welcome!
There are some really impressive weight losses here, yay!

Uhtredwaere · 10/06/2020 14:15

Thanks all for the ideas! I ended up having a brown Warburton thin with tomato puree and mozzarella. Some chicken breast slices and salad. The whole thing came to 300 calories and 27g carbs so I'm happy with that. This thread is so useful and seeing how well other people have done is really motivating. Keep up the good work everyone!

bluepixie · 10/06/2020 14:23

@thenewaveragebear1983 I’ve had my fritta for lunch so didn’t fancy more eggs.
I’m going to have it for dinner tmrw and I will report back. I love miso and Thani and usually roast salmon with it but never with smoked and uncooked!

PhoenixMama · 10/06/2020 15:02

Welcome @nibdedibble I was your exact weight when I started last year and I lost 50lbs in 4.5 months so it's definitely doable! I plateau'd at that and lockdown has put 7lbs back on but back on it and I want to lose another stone or so.

@Uhtredwaere I do a pizza on tortillas which is close to 400cals but I tweak my other meals so my carbs are low for that!

Thanks for the support on the photo - I'm going to ask her not to share it.
