Blood sugar diet and fast800 thread 19

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/05/2020 22:25

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

The dc were baking so I thought I'd try out a keto/low carb brownie. These are 105 cals per piece and 5g carbs. I am going to freeze them individually as if I ate several they'd actually be getting calorific, but thought they'd be good to have for emergencies or for if you fancy a pudding (with yogurt and berries maybe)

70g almond flour
Tablespoon of milled flaxseed
80g cocoa unsweetened
Sweetener (you could use the erythritol discussed up thread, or I used a sugar free syrup designed for coffee. I only used a few tbsp but you could sweeten to taste)
1 egg
The solid cream and a slosh of the water from a can of coconut milk

Mix together, grease and line a tin and bake at 180 until it's firm and dry when you test it, (around 30 mins but check it)

I sprinkled just a few choc drops on the top when it was hot and they've all melted

I made 12, 105 cals each, 5g carbs

Wow they look amazing! R they good??

I’m closing at 900 and 35 carbs. Knew I would be more in 900 reigon as been at work.

bluepixie · 10/06/2020 17:49

Ok so I just had some dark choc taking me to 950 and 38 carbs
Must not let anything else pass mouth!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/06/2020 17:52

@Cream123 they are nice but could do with being sweeter by using some sweeteners (but then that sort of isn't fast800) I used a sugar free caramel syrup for coffee but it wasn't quite sweet enough to be really cake like. The texture is great though. Good for a special occasion. I've portioned them out and frozen them to avoid any unnecessary nibbling!

They look amazing bear!

I made this recipe last week and they were so good. I am an erythritol user though as you know! That definitely helped.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/06/2020 18:17

To be honest if they'd been sweeter they'd have been dangerous as the texture is very cake like but because they weren't overly sweet I could stop at one. The whole tray is 1200 cals and actually for a tiny cake they're high in cals aren't they? I was saying to my friend last night that it's actually the texture of carbs I miss - nothing can replicate it really (eg bread, chips, rice etc - they don't really taste of anything but it's the 'mouthfeel' of them that's hard to replicate with a substitute)

OP posts:
bluepixie · 10/06/2020 18:20

Oh they look amazing too. May make them at weekend to have so I don’t go mad and have 30000 cals and 30000g of carbs and undo all my hard work in week!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/06/2020 18:24

Closing up the kitchen on 1236 cals and 42g carbs. A little over on cals but that does seem to be a good amount for me. My meals have been ok- lunch was 'meh' and I knew it as I was eating it that it was dull. Dinner looked like it was going the same way, but it was actually delicious! I had the pork and mange tout stir fry from the fast800 book and it was so tasty. I added some Ras-al- hanout as I had no 5 spice left and it was super tasty. The zero noodles are a good addition too, very filling.

Tomorrow: run in the morning and I'm planning a longish one on a new route. Then food will be egg for lunch (that's what I should have had today and I regretted not having) and then dinner will be a gammon steak, black pudding and grilled tomatoes. I am really looking forward to that one!

agteacht · 10/06/2020 18:25

Agree, it's the idea of having a sandwich or a bag of chips or a naan!
Though DH has a white bread sandwich today and it looked really unappetising...

I have been having some Oppo ice-cream, anyone tried that? Relatively low cal, low carb... relatively...

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/06/2020 18:30

@agteacht I have had it before, it's nice. Have you seen the sugar free caramel magnums? My friend sent me a pic of them and she says you'd never know they're SF. Not sure if that's a good thing or not?! I suppose in all these situations, if it's a case of having the real deal or having the lower carb version, then obviously the low carb is best, but as a rule it helps to not have either unless absolutely necessary.

OP posts:
Justasecondnow · 10/06/2020 18:33

Today’s effort. Cal: 950 carbs 46. The ham and mayo and the mushy peas were what pushed me over 800 as hadn’t actually intended to eat them today.

150ml Milk - 75 & 7
Crust less quiche - 340 & 1
Slice ham & mayo - 70 & 0
Gammon - 240 & 0
Cabbage - 182 &38
Mushy peas - 50 & 8

Aiming not to weigh til Friday am. Hopefully close ish back to 10.5. Then back on it for another 4 weeks. Whatever I get too. Goal is 9.7 but seems unlikely. But need an end point... Considering buying the fast 800 book - that’s 2 weeks 800 then less strict diet is it? Would anyone recommend it? Kinda as my way forward to maintain/lose slowly. agteacht you’ve done so well! What are you thinking maintenance wise?

Also hi to all the joiners in!

bluepixie · 10/06/2020 19:07

@agteacht I’ve had halotop before
They 90 cals and 10g carbs. They r super delicious but obv sweetness and high carbs but I really like them. Very exp so I only buy when on offer! I recommend salted caramel and the peanut butter one

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/06/2020 19:07

@Justasecondnow the fast800 is a sort of cross between the original 5:2 fasting diet and the blood sugar diet. You do 2 weeks at 800 calories and then you can switch to a 5:2 type plan with Mediterranean style food on the 5 days and 800 cals on the 2

OP posts:
agteacht · 10/06/2020 20:44

@thenewaveragebear1983 no hadnt heard of those! What's the carb count? Off to google them...

@Cream123 oh just try that too. Am finding the oppo choc and hazelnut a bit too yummy. Though you're right it's dear... bought it for £3 on offer yesterday in Sainsbury's and that's probably the price of Haagen or Ben and Jerry's not on offer!

@Justasecondnow you are also doing well and steadily dropping! I am still figuring out my maintenance plan really. I started to pull back a bit but then had to get back on it properly to lose the 1.8lb this week to get under 10st as I was struggling to break that barrier.
But today I had 1400 cals and 45g carbs and I'm planning to stick to around that each day, probably 50g carbs as my limit, for the next two weeks and see what happens.
My TDEE is 1500-1900 depending on what exercise level I go with. Basically I need to stay low carb but am easing further on the cals.

agteacht · 10/06/2020 20:44

@Cream123 I must try it I mean!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/06/2020 20:56

Kind of gone a bit awol and had a bit of a low carb binge out this evening. Very odd because there's loads of choc and cake in the kitchen but instead I ate yogurt cheese, ham and one of my almond brownies. Do adding about 400 cals to my day, but not terrible on carbs. I'm not going to dwell on it, it's done. I've had a hot bath and drunk a few big glasses of water and will pick up tomorrow.

@thenewaveragebear1983 I just did same and came to fess up. I really wanted a choc bar crisps and biscuits

But I had strawberries almond butter (ps this is an amazing combo) and Babybel. I’m now in at 1150 and 48 carbs. Not great. But it’s much better than what I wanted to have! Am full and satisfied now

Tried to work wot what it was. I didn’t drink anything after 4pm today I realised . It’s a bit mad when I get home after work sorting DS food and putting him to bed etc and I just forgot and then I was tired and hungry. So plan tmrw is to drive home and complete an entire bottle of water during the drive so even if I have nothing when I get in I’ve had 750mls at 430.

Right tmrw will be a better day!

If you do like a cold pudding/ice cream but don't want to have sweeteners then you can get some frozen raspberries, some yogurt or marscapone, and some peanut butter, swirl it together until the raspberries freeze the yogurt (or put back into the freezer) and that is really really tasty (fairly cal heavy though, although you can omit the PB)

@Cream123 I know exactly what mine was. My ds went back to nursery Monday and today and he's been an absolute demon off the back of it. He ground me down, I'm not ashamed to admit it, and eventually I broke. But yes, like you say, it could have been a lot lot worse!

Ok - weird weird day - up super early, then a combination of Zooms meant that I didn't get my run till 11ish and didn't eat anything till about noon. (Run was horrendous! ) but various work and having a low day meant I didn't actually eat that much. So on a 1000 cal day I only had 862 calls with 56g of carb. Very happy with that.

Really hoping I see the difference on the scale tomorrow!

Kimlek · 10/06/2020 22:02

Hello newbies!!
I’m very disappointed that you didn’t have the miso, tahini bread thing cream as I’m very intrigued. I’ve never been able to find tahini so have to ask where you’re getting it from.
Had a good dog walk and a slightly damp bike ride. I’ve felt sickly all day today and still feel odd. Bloated, heavy and a bit nauseous. Didn’t eat the smoked salmon salad I’d prepped for lunch picnic as I was frozen and a bit wet and the last thing I fancied was a flipping salad!! but did have a scone with jam & clotted cream... bloody delicious and definitely felt better for a bit. Forced myself to eat dinner of trout, greens & carrot mash (the spicy carrot mash from fast800 - nice). Zero alcohol today.
Closing kitchen at 885 & 82 carbs Shocking carbs due to the one scone.

Kimlek · 11/06/2020 06:38

Morning lovelies!
Weigh in at 10.7.2 this am
Just been looking at my fat secret reports and I started at Xmas at just over 12st so-
Dec - 0.5 lost (12st)
Jan- 6.5 lost
Feb - 6.5 lost
March- 1 lost (was aiming to maintain around 11st)
April - 1 lost (maintaining around 10.12 / 10.13)
May - 2 lost (started plan on 21st so only 1 wk of May)
June - 3 lost so far
Interesting when you look at it like this. Not as slow and as rubbish as I’d thought. I’m really happy with that!!

Kimlek · 11/06/2020 06:57

Plan for today is a decent dog walk albeit meeting a friend for a socially distanced one so think it could be a stroll rather than brisk. Will make Mediterranean chicken to freeze. And another chicken dish for another day but no idea what!! Lunch will be salmon salad from yesterday (350) and dinner pan fried tuna with stir fry veg (300). I’ll be drinking coffee with milk as it’s a bit chilly. No booze! So should come in at around 800 as bound you snack on something. Still feel super bloated and tummy looks huge! No idea when period due as perimenopausal. I hate not knowing!!

Kimlek · 11/06/2020 06:59

Crikey the above looks like the Kimlek show!! Me, me and more me!! Blush

agteacht · 11/06/2020 07:50

Haha last poster last night and first this morning Kimlek!
Sounds like a good plan for today. And such consistency in overall weight loss!

My latest diet 'hack' is coffee with cream. Much less carbs than milk and feels like a real treat.
