Blood sugar diet and fast800 thread 19

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/05/2020 22:25

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

Which frittata did you make cream I keep eyeing them up in the recipe books but I know I’ll be the only one eat it. I did make a lovely goats cheese one that was also cottage cheese I think but I’ve no idea where I got the recipe from.

bluepixie · 08/06/2020 18:13

Goats cheese courguttte onion and tomatoes was delicious and I’ve made it to last me all week

I’ve also made it with feta before which is also lovely

I’m hungry! But gonna keep busy!

Kimlek · 08/06/2020 18:23

cream that sounds good! Which recipe book is that in please assuming it’s a BSD one? Thank you!

bluepixie · 08/06/2020 18:35

I got it off here plus the chicken too which u told me about
I also recommend the brocolli and Stilton soup that’s my plan for lunch next week

thenewaveragebear1983 · 08/06/2020 18:51

Closing up the kitchen today on 1022 cals, 30g carbs, 13k steps (6 km run). A really good day actually. I haven't snacked at all and my meals were great. I can highly recommend the chicken and lentil curry from the fast800 book. I have to confess I've never really cooked much from there but the things I have tried have been delicious.

Tomorrow I will run in the morning, and I'd really like to get a yoga session in as well as I'm feeling quite tight in my hips and calves. Food will be salad with some of my prepped med veg and for dinner it will be sausages and mushrooms (from the fast800 book)

Closing the kitchen at 1074 so only 74 calls over which I'm happy enough with. Mentally it was weird to eat to 1000 rather than 800 but I know my brain would start to shut down on a running day without it!

Let's see what the scale says tomorrow!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/06/2020 07:25

Weighed in this morning at 10.8.4 which is around 4.5lbs off - overnight! I told you I hold a lot of water! My muscles feel considerably less stiff today too so I really must have been quite bloated up and retaining a lot. But anyway, really pleased with that and motivated now for the day ahead!

fufulina · 09/06/2020 07:39

@thenewaveragebear1983 that’s brilliant!

That frittata looks delicious.

9.5kg off in total this morning (week 6, day 2). And to my intense disappointment the amazing impact of the first week of Fast800 on my period has not been replicated for this period. 😭 I’m not sure it is quite as heavy as previously, but it is back with a vengeance.

Boobs swimming around in biggest bra. Have put that one away. 💪🏻

Bestbees · 09/06/2020 07:41

Well done average bear!

First week weigh in for me: 10.2 3/4 making my first weeks loss 3.8lb. pleased with that, and will keep plodding on. I have about 7lb to go.
Plan for today:
Asparagus soup and cheese for lunch
Dinner miso aubergines from the book followed by berries and yog

Wondering how much weight loss might slow this week, I will find it hard to keep it up if I am only losing 1lb a week.

Nsv: much less bloated. Also my mum tum area much trimmer looking.

Good luck everyone today!

bluepixie · 09/06/2020 07:55

Well done @thenewaveragebear1983
Wow that is a lot! I’m usually 1.5 max.
Plan today
Salmon and spinach 9am
Frittta
Chicken drumsticks and some brocolli

Good day everyone x

Justasecondnow · 09/06/2020 08:37

Good weigh ins today. Well done everyone...

Unfortunately I have not done so well... 3lb’s on (I normally weigh in Friday but had a feeling.) Gutted is not the word. I had slipped a bit (ahem takeaway on Friday and some chocolate fingers here and there) but not 3lb bad! I do feel bloated so maybe that’s part of it.

Well I am going to try and claw my way back to a stay the same on Friday. So need to lose 3lb to be back to 10’5. Gah. I think I just need to accept this diet is hardcore and stick to it to shift the lbs and not let ‘treats’ sneak back in. Wish me luck.

bluepixie · 09/06/2020 08:51

@justasecondnow
Yes once u have any carbs it goes up quick. But it drops fast too as it’s water the first few days usually. Hopefully u will loose it ASAP. It’s very disheartening. I’ve been playing this game of up and down for ages now. I’m adamant this time it’s going to go down down down!

Justasecondnow · 09/06/2020 09:29

Thanks cream123 it helps to hear that. Hope we can both do some down down down! I might start posting cals/carbs on here to be accountable. I’ve avoided it by sticking with recipes in book and not having much extra, as I find that all so tedious! But I think I’m fooling myself a little with stuff creeping in. We shall see!

PhoenixMama · 09/06/2020 10:34

Hi all - down 2lbs after the first day so happy with that!

Breakfast today is 2 eggs with 28g of sourdough, lunch is salad with pork roast and dinner is steak fajitas (red onion, peppers, etc).

@justasecondnow Also check your salt intake I find that makes a huge difference to how up & down I am!

agteacht · 09/06/2020 14:14

Some fantastic losses!

And I agree with everyone else @Justasecondnow you will see it come off in a couple of days if it was just a one-off carb blip.

I'm weighing in tomorrow (end of week 11!) and hope I have similar success to some of you guys...

I haven't paid much attention to salt throughout this @PhoenixMama what's your thoughts on that? Congrats on your previous epic weight loss - 48lb?? Phenomenal

@Algiz your pics are also phenomenal!

PhoenixMama · 09/06/2020 14:20

Aw thanks @agteacht - yeah I found that if I upped my salt (generally adding it to most meals) it helped me lose more (especially when I started to plateau) also a magnesium spray helped too!

agteacht · 09/06/2020 15:05

Hahha there will be salt added to everything from now on!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/06/2020 16:17

I find when I'm really on plan with this diet I really enjoy salty food as well, whereas I'm normally very much a sweet tooth. Things like feta cheese, egg mayo with lots of salt, mayo etc. Not sure about salt in coffee though....

Postmanbear · 09/06/2020 18:13

821 and 30g of carbs today. Lamb steak with roasted veg for dinner which make a change. The only carbs I’m really missing is in alcohol!

fufulina · 09/06/2020 18:34

I’m closing the kitten, too...

bluepixie · 09/06/2020 19:28

Af here
So bloated
Usually weigh in wed but will move it to Thursday . Also explains my ridiculous eating this weekend.
Planned tmrw should be similar but more carbs as at work and need them!
