Blood sugar diet and fast800 support thread #18

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/03/2020 17:03

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

Have gone into crazy mode and eaten my body weight in biscuits and cake and chocolates! Will get back on it tmrw!!!
Was very stressed this weekend with corna stuff - am front line nhs staff. And couldn’t be bothered with cooking or counting cals.
Am feeling terrible so back on tmrw!

thisyeargoodyear · 23/03/2020 16:09

I am 3 pound UP since Friday! The weekend was awful food wise - everything went wrong and I made cocktails on Saturday night! I have tried to be good today but I am struggling. The fridge is not well stocked, but the thought of the shops is putting me off - I may brave the shops later tonight and see what they have! Tomorrow is a new day!

CiorstanMI · 23/03/2020 19:03

@Cream123 I'm sorry you're having such a tough time. You and your colleagues are doing a wonderful job and we're all really grateful. Be kind to yourself.

Day 15 and I'm closing the kitchen at 862 calories and 36g of carbs.

I only lost 0.6kg last week, which is a bit galling considering how good I was. However it's still 4.4kg in total since I started (about 9.5 lb in old money). I'm hoping for a bit of a whoosh soon.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/03/2020 21:30

Gone over today, up to around 1400 cals as I did have a chocolate biscuit after the big announcement. My food was otherwise good.

Stay safe everyone Thanks

I’ve eaten so much nutella it’s obscene!! Just anxious about all this.... lots if friends in the frontline like you cream123 and it’s dire!! Hope you’ve got PPE! Xxx

Kimlek · 23/03/2020 21:40

Apologies for all my grammar/spelling errors!

bluepixie · 24/03/2020 07:12

Another day today. I will be good! Not that work and planned food in my head this am when I woke up!
Hope everyone is ok and not going to go to stir crazy! Stay safe x

bluepixie · 24/03/2020 08:31

Yoghurt and berries
Smoked salmon salad
Home made turkey burgers no bap with broccoli side
800 cals and no more !

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/03/2020 19:29

Today has not gone well.
Having period from hell which doesn't help, but it all spiralled into a lot of carbs - we won't go into that now- but let's just say it was not good.

Tomorrow? Will be better I'm sure!

Day 16, 892 cals and 43g carbs. V proud of myself because it's been a long and very stressful work day and that's normally when I start snacking. But not this time - kitchen is closed!

Kimlek · 24/03/2020 22:50

Well done ciorstan
I’ve a wicked sweet tooth at the minute and enjoying G&Ts too much. Not playing tennis and even the lovely dog walks have barriers forbidding access. Annoying as all the places I go are really quiet. Feeling incredibly meh. Hence the G&Ts, raisins, dates.... flipping dates!!!

agteacht · 25/03/2020 15:41

Hello all could I please join you?

I'm a typical fad dieter and desperately need something to reset my body. I have PCOS and my hormones are likely all over the place as I have a 14 week old little girl.

I put on 30lb during pregnancy and have only lost 18lb of it... plus I was already at least a stone overweight! So weighing in now at 161lb with an interim target of 147lb and dream of somewhere in the 130s. I'm hoping this is the eating plan which will get me there... I have no clothes that fit apart from leggings or maternity wear...

I've started today with a late breakfast of poached eggs, bacon medallions and spinach at 215 cal plus 75 cal used on milk in my coffee

Planning a stir fry for tea

Really glad to join you guys as seems a really positive thread and some of the losses are amazing!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 25/03/2020 16:41

Well done @CiorstanMI ! You're really doing well. @Kimlek don't be too hard on yourself! (Although dried fruit is like a billion carbs and to be honest you are probably better off having chocolate!)

Welcome @agteacht , of course you can join us!

It could be a weird few weeks for all of us. I braved tesco at 7 this morning and the shelves were okay, limiting quantities of everything though which I hadn't realised so I ended up with a real hotchpotch of stuff after putting things back. We have food though at least, and I have to say I was expecting carnage and it was fairly sedate. My food today has been good, in fact so far I have had only 1g of carbs, although as a result I have a headache. I went for a run in the Sunshine too, didn't pass a soul except other runners.
Dinner tonight is a roast chicken with Nando's seasoning and I've made a big batch of roasted veg which will do today and then as salad topping for at least the next two days. Funny, Dh has reverted to weekend mode and is eating sandwiches etc rather than salads and is already feeling bloated.

I’m really struggling atm
When I’m stressed (and work is utterly insane) I want to eat everything.
As a result yest was another disaster
But I stayed strong today but added in a yoghurt I wouldn’t usually have which kept me going
850 and 40g carbs

Am shattered and want to go to bed !!!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 25/03/2020 17:34

@Cream123 I can imagine. All I can say is to be kind to yourself. There are certainly bigger things going on right now. It's a situation of two halves isn't it? So many people stuck at home bored and then the parallel of some people literally exhausted, run off their feet- we just cannot imagine what that must be like Thanks

thenewaveragebear1983 · 25/03/2020 20:15

Closing up today on approx 1100 cals and 55g carbs. I did 12k steps (6km was a run) and a hiit workout this evening. I had a rather decadent spoonful of Nutella on my yogurt and raspberries. Other than that my food has been top notch. Fasting all morning seems to work for me provided I don't end up grazing when the children eat.
We had chicken today so tomorrow I will make a broth with the bones. Probably a chilli for dinner as I got some mince today and I'm going to try to eek it out to two meals if I can.

I really need to not run tomorrow and take the children out instead as they are going a bit stir crazy now, so I will forego my run, and will hopefully find time for yoga as well. I really enjoyed the 30 days but I haven't been making the time for it at the moment. It would probably do me good.

Welcome @agteacht, you're clearly off to good start.

Well for me that's day 17 done and kitchen closing at 825 calories and 42 carbs. I'm so glad I followed the advice of people on here and batch cooked lots of low carb meals before I started. It makes life so much easier. Thanks everyone.

agteacht · 25/03/2020 20:44

Thank you all for the welcome!

I ended up on 870 calories on my first day but messed up on the carbs... 87g. Blew it through two satsumas and a cereal bar as snacks (didn't realise there was so much carbs in them, nearly 50g just in those). Will need to sort out alternative snacks!!

But feel surprisingly full enough on 870 cals so that is reassuring and gives me hope! I'll cut down the extra 70 tomorrow.

Also did half an hour on spin bike and 8k steps so all in all a good day. Fingers crossed tomorrow is also okay.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 26/03/2020 07:38

Good start @agteacht!

My day started well, I weighed in at 10.4 which I was pleased about considering it's totm and all the general craziness going on right now. It has ended very badly. I've just opened my mouth and food has gone in all day. Literally I have lost the plot! I am blaming my hormones and stress, but seriously after today I need to get a grip. It's not even as if we don't have the right food in, because we do, I'm Just being greedy and gluttonous. I did 11k steps, no run, but did yoga and went for a walk with dd as well (not a long one though)

Tomorrow: I have my bone broth made now so I am going to do a longer fast, maybe even until dinner time and just have that if I feel peckish. I've eaten plenty today. I'm going out for my run nice and early, (there are too many runners out during the day for my liking), and will try to do my yoga as well as I had forgotten how much I like it and how good it is for my legs. I need to attend a 'team meeting' online in the morning but the rest of my day is just 'jobs' although I am getting a lot done this week!

Hope everyone is ok. It's bound to be difficult at the moment. I'm going to keep checking in for accountability!

Good luck with your fast tomorrow @thenewaveragebear1983.

I'm closing the kitchen on day 18 at 833 calories and 35g carbs.

sunnie1992 · 26/03/2020 20:45

Joining in to start the 8 weeks programme tomorrow.

I've got thyroid disease and I'm insulin resistant, probably not that far from diabetes.

18kg to lose, possibly 20kg.

Need to do intermittent fasting as once I start eating I struggle to stop!

agteacht · 26/03/2020 22:04

Hi everyone

Day #2 for me and didn't manage the 800. Finishing at 970. Was too hungry so had chicken and salad mid afternoon. Carbs improvement on yesterday at 57g.

I'm hoping the hunger passes, I'm guess it's normal at this early stage?!

I would really like to see the scales moving over the next day or two... fingers crossed!!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 27/03/2020 06:54

Welcome @sunnie1992
Great day @agteacht , and yes the hunger definitely passes after a few days
@CiorstanMI you're just quietly smashing it aren't you, every time I scroll through and think 'oooh someone's had a good day there' it very often turns out to be you! Well done! Star
