Seaside as a rule, I’ll eat approx 2/3 of the calories my Fitbit says I burned running, on top of the 800. I often have more though. I need to be more strict if I’m ever going to lose the last half stone.

It’s surprising and a little depressing sometimes just how few calories a really gruelling run burns. Yesterday’s for example, burned 10 cals per minute according to Fitbit, so 240 cals for 5.5km and I felt like I’d worked a lot harder than that! There’s also no discernible difference between the calories burned running or walking the same distance, and not really any increase in burn if it’s a gentle flat route or if it’s a punishing hilly one. So I’m very wary of adding too many calories just because I feel like I’ve had a strenuous workout.

On the flip side, dd and I were watching ‘supersize vs superskinny’ the other day and one of the super skinnies was eating 1500 cals a day, got absolutely berated by dr Christian and got told they were eating less than a baby’s daily requirements - which made me a bit Confusedas I did quite a few months eating less than that every day (and was never superskinny!)

Long week that is not over yet. Probably going to have another c. 1000-1100 calorie day, as things have just been too complicated to pack lunch for a true 800 cal day. Haven't gained this week, but haven't lost either. I'll take it.

onanothertrain · 09/08/2018 18:00

I was overheard by a dietician telling a colleague about this diet, she wasn't too impressed!
40g carbs and 551 calories today, day 13 of 30DS.

Westwing1 · 09/08/2018 19:12

I'm happy with the food I am eating, palm size portion of protein or sl larger with my main meal, buckets of veg, eggs, some pulses, a little cheese, a few nuts, olive oil and butter, all good. Day 4 no alcohol. My children need lots of carbs, age 51 I don't. I don't need 2,000 kc either. Once I have reached my goal and lost the excess weight, mainly rolls on my tummy (!), I will bring my daily allowance up to 1200 or so but honestly that is plenty for me unless I start exercising lots. Not sure what the dietician would think but I am very happy and just want to continue.

waterandlemonjuice · 09/08/2018 20:08

I've eaten

breakfast muffins
lentil, feta and lettuce salad with olive oil and balsamic dressing
A few quails eggs
An apple
A Marmite cheese
A burger (226 cal) with lettuce and a small bit of cheese on top

I'm probably over 800 cals but hopefully not much

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/08/2018 20:53

I think after the first round it’s not wise or recommended to continue at 800 calories indefinitely, and I think it’s the low calorie count that makes people gasp with horror! But we all know exactly how much 800 calories can actually be if you carefully plan your meals and how nourishing it is. People, even dieticians, don’t always understand it. All I would say is that if you’re regularly going under 800 cals, or are feeling any of the signs of real undernourishment (shakes, headaches, dry skin etc or just generally feeling crappy) then it’s time to look at your food intake and see if some improvements can be made.

I’ve pretty much lost the plot this afternoon! Did very well to hold out until then, but that’s it, I’m going to just eat a few treats now for the last day of my holiday. Although I am going to do a 10km run tomorrow, I will also be having cake and fish and chips on the sea front tomorrow night!

train my friend is a dietician with diabetes and she has done lots of research into it and is totally supportive of it, as is another medic friend. I agree that it sounds extreme, but in my experience when people read up on it a bit more then they can realise the benefits.

Not a good day, went out with my friend and her toddler to hide from the rain in cafes...

Polpette · 10/08/2018 06:20

There's definitely a lot of fear around 800 calories - I've learned the hard way that it's better not to tell people when they ask now. I've had someone get really angry with me and started telling me off saying I should just eat less and move more. Grrrrrr. My work colleagues have been the most supportive for which I am very grateful.

When I'm not doing a BSD cycle (which is as of today) I'm going to eat a max of 1,500 which seems HUGE amounts of food, that coupled with the odd fast day at 800 should help me maintain before I hit cycle 2 in a few weeks.

Another 2lbs off this week and now it's time to head off on holiday!

Thanks everyone for your amazing support and good luck to everyone starting out on the journey.

NoUnderpantsinSpace · 10/08/2018 07:15

Interesting to read about your experience of telling people about the 800cal a day thing. I remember when I first read about the BSD I was a little bit horrified and imagined it was a really bad idea.

Then reading the book I was like "woah! Wait a minute? Really? EXCELLENT!" Because it sounded much more reasonable once I'd read about it. And much more doable.

Now I'm on day 5. I had a bit of a wobble yesterday (pre menstrual and restless legs kept me awake as well as other stuff until around 2am) but still came in under 900 ish cal.

Today I weighed myself and I am 2kg lighter than on Monday!
The food I'm eating and snacking on is mostly vegetables with protein and I can't really say I've been hungry either.

It's amazing!!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/08/2018 07:36

Brilliant nounderpants.

Definitely agree about the 800 calories- over the years I’ve been doing this I’ve had lots of ‘advice’, usually but not always from overweight people, about how I’m starving myself. Recently at my in laws they told me they’d read about someone whose heart stopped because they digested their own muscles Hmm- I was like, ‘but all I eat is muscles!’ And then pointed out that I was most likely the fittest, healthiest person in the room (which included an 11 month old baby who was eating cake) which went down really well

So now I just smile, tell everyone I’ve lost 32lb but that I’m insanely miserable without carbs, which seems to be what people want to hear.

Anyway! Last day of our holiday today, I’m off to do a nice run along the coastal path before we head out. It’s my ‘day off’ today so I apologise to the BSD gods in advance for today’s menu, which will largely consist of ice cream, cake and chips.

Have a great day all, see you on the flip side when I’m regretting all the crap I’ve eaten today

I've only told my colleague about the calories - we were comparing diets as she's on SW. Anyone else including my OH I've just said low carbing, except for my dad who just wouldn't get it at all!

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 10/08/2018 08:38

Embarrassed at how badly wrong I've gone in the last few days. Libra tells me I will now hit target on 8th June 2023! Still making some good decisions. Trying again today but we're having all the family over for a barbecue. At least that means I can decide what's on the menu.

Polpette · 10/08/2018 09:25

Glad you're feeling so positive NoUnderpants that loss is great - you'll soon adjust and by about week 3 it's hard to imagine any other way of eating.

Oh Bear that comment you made about being the healthiest in the room including the cake eating baby was brilliant.

Polpette · 10/08/2018 09:28

Enjoy the bbq Amazing, you'll get back on track in no time.

I think half the battle with weight loss is accepting that you've had a few bad days and not beating yourself up so much that you give up entirely.

Westwing1 · 10/08/2018 09:36

Hope you have a lovely relaxing holiday Polpette. I am doing pretty well here, think I am 800 every day so far this week. Amazing the last couple of bbq's I went to I realised no one noticed what I did or didn't put on my plate, ended up just having a sausage and a small burger, salad leaves and water. I wasn't miserable, had a nice time. Not drinking alcohol was key for me sticking to it. No one noticed what was in my glass either Wink.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 10/08/2018 11:17

I'm not drinking as I'm driving tomorrow morning and I am incapable of having just one. I'm going to calorie count everything in advance so I know exactly what to have.

Polpette · 10/08/2018 11:48

Thanks WestWing, I'm planning on being as active as possible to counteract any non BSD food I may end up eating.

BBQs are great as you can pack in lot of protein and salad and like you say most people don't seem to notice too much.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 10/08/2018 16:08

Hi all. Weighed myself yesterday and I’m down 1.5 stone since starting with a bit of upping and downing along the way!! Off on holiday today - going to really try and maintain. Can’t bear the thought of all my hard work disappearing! I’ve been doing weekly Parkruns for the last 8 weeks so I’m going to miss that but will have a change with lots of swimming and will do HIIT every morning. Oh and I bought two bikinis Shock for holiday Grin

Oblomov18 · 10/08/2018 17:01

Hi all. Just checking in with you all.

waterandlemonjuice · 10/08/2018 20:46

I've eaten

2 breakfast egg muffins (200)
Salad with trout mixed with creme fraiche, horseradish and chives, lush
2 Marmite cheeses
Lobster tail with garlic, lemon and chilli with samphire

And am probably way over 800 as also had a pack of Posh pork scratchings and they're 250 cals, oops.

But Day 18 of no alcohol so that's good

Junkmail · 10/08/2018 20:53

Regarding the 800 cals causing shock and horror I just haven’t told anyone that’s how little I’m eating. I can’t be doing with the lecture I know I would get. I thoroughly researched before I started though and I know that for now this is suiting me so it’s really no-one else’s business. You have to be of a teeny tiny body fat ratio to begin digesting your own heart! 😂 A lot of people just don’t understand. My husband is doing it with me and he’s more keen to tell people how great it is and how awesome he feels and I’m like Ssshhh!!! You’ll bring out the doomsdayers 😂

NoUnderpantsinSpace · 10/08/2018 21:27

It was another sub 800 cal day here (just Smile ) but then I got baking the cake for DD’s birthday and some biscuits... I may have eaten a bit if icing and then “tested” a biscuit Blush .... it might still be a sub 1000 day I guess. That will do! It’s been a very very busy day here!!

I feel like I must have done about 100 errands!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/08/2018 10:31

Enjoyed my day off yesterday. Had the worst night’s sleep last night, lay awake for hours and finally fell asleep at some time after 3.30. Up at 7 to get home, so naturally started today with a bread roll and a piece of cake - as I often say, it’s not the one day off that does the damage it’s what you do the next few days, and clearly I am a prime example of what not to do! Finally came on today, a week late, and I have to admit I was getting a bit worried. That means this next week is my optimum week to really cut the carbs and get back on plan, so from tomorrow I’m being strict!

OP posts:
thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/08/2018 17:46

Finally home. Eaten loads of motorway crap and bread! Today pretty much written off and I’m dreading the scales tomorrow morning. But I have brought it upon myself so must reap the consequences.

Will be drawing a line tomorrow. One benefit of being held up for hours is that I’ve planned all my menu for the week and written my shopping list so it’s all ready to go tomorrow!

OP posts:
NoUnderpantsinSpace · 11/08/2018 20:26

Bear I totally agree about not the day off being the problem but the getting back on plan part being the problem Blush

Today I helped the kids ice the biscuits I made - it basically means I ice a few biscuits and they pour icing everywhere and then have to "clear it up" by licking everything.

Then once the family had arrived to celebrate (annoying BIL & SIL and PIL) we had coffee and cake.

I had one piece of the cake I made and had to scrape some of the icing off. It was too sweet Shock
Tomorrow we are at another family birthday. I will do my best to be low carb...
