Number it’s unusual but every now and then someone starts this and doesn’t loose much at first. There’s a few reasons it may happen- underestimating calories or carbs in foods, particularly veg and fruit; not drinking enough water/ retaining water/ constipation; totm just happening to coincide with starting the plan; or sometimes you just simply don’t have the high levels of visceral fat to lose quickly (maybe because you’ve already been dieting, or exercising). When you start this plan, first you use all your stored glycogen (muscle energy!) and the water it holds too (so for every molecule of glycogen, it holds 3-4 molecules of water) , then you begin to burn through that visceral fat around your organs (which can take a few weeks or even months) and also begin burning ‘actual fat’ only if you continue to remain in calorie deficit. So if you lose nothing in the first few days it’s almost 100% water related (or linked as above to carbs being too high, totm, etc) Ironically, you probably need to drink some. Lots. Then some more!

onanother not measuring but will try it!
thenewaverage not currently dieting so should have tons of glycogen. I'll admit to being too busy at work to drink much yesterday. Calories are accurate as weighing everything, aiming for low GI more than low carb as I don't tolerate ketosis well. Hoping it picks up soon.
Soooo frustrating. 10 treats ago I lost a stone in 2 weeks on 1700 calories a day, what I would give for a twenty something metabolism now!
I am utterly impressed by the amount of excercise you manage on minimal calories BTW! Very inspirational!

Westwing1 · 21/09/2018 14:54

Hi everyone, I am where I want to be now, am exercising most days and making an effort to drink water. Sticking to BSD food as I am so used to it now, with the exception of just before my period when my body wants carbs. I will pop back if I go off the rails! Thanks for all the support, it's really helped. Good luck everyone, keep going, remember your goals.

onanothertrain · 21/09/2018 15:12

Well done west!!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/09/2018 16:18

Well done west!
Number you won’t go into ketosis doing this plan, our carbs are too high even on the low carb (if that makes sense?)

I’m going ok but as I’m trying to not calorie count but rather to just ‘know’ that what I’m eating is right - homework set by my hypnotist!- I’ve not been posting as such. It is incredibly hard for me to lose my safety net of calorie counting and if anything I’ve probably been more on plan as a result. Today I had some overnight oats (recipe in the menu planner thread) before running, then lunch I had some Camembert melted in the microwave and a spoonful of fig chutney and a few cherry toms and prawns (v odd combination); dinner is going to be chicken something with veg but I haven’t decided what yet. I haven’t snacked at all the last few days and I’m feeling really good. This is my last weekend not drinking (well, I hope to do next Friday as well) and it is the first where I’ve thought I might actually fancy a drink tonight.

So calories I don’t know but I’ve done 24k steps (I ran 10 miles today, that’s what’s caused the massive number!)

Have a great weekend everyone!

Average unfortunately under 60g carbs a day l get into ketosis and end up with an unshiftable brain fog. I did LC bootcamp and had to stop after 6 weeks as it never lifted despite lots of extra salt and water! I quite like the sound of your lunch!
Well done West!
STS today as well Hmm

quince2figs · 22/09/2018 07:36

Aargh - awful couple of days. Birthday tea for ds of homemade burgers - but I included the bread and then had cheesecake, so way over on calories. Yesterday teaching a course at hotel with food provided; (forgot my packed lunch) - basically a complete carb fest of around 1700 calories....
Not lost for about a week now, entirely predictably.
What has surprised me is just how unwell I feel after mucho carbs - exactly like a bad hangover, without the alcohol. Looking forward to resuming yogurt, chicken and lots of veg!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 22/09/2018 07:55

Number that’s interesting, did you find you lost lots of weight in keto then?

We don’t technically need to count carbs on this plan, although it does help to be mindful of how much you’re having especially if you’re not calorie counting. If you stick to 800 cals and avoid starchy carbs as per the book, it’s naturally self limiting. Once, or if, you increase the calorie amounts then obviously if you’re eating more of the carbs that are allowed (eg nuts, dairy, some of the more carbs veg or pulses) then the carbs might be too high and stall your losses. I had a day last week where I only ate BSD food but still clocked in 130g carbs!

Last night was very good for me for a Friday night. I did not snack in the evening, I had 2 very small glasses of wine, my meal was BSD friendly and I didn’t have loads. Weighed in at 10.2 which is a small loss this week, but to be honest the relief from feeling back in control and trusting myself to eat properly is much better. For the first time in ages I’m feeling really confident about the weekend and that I am not just writing it off til Monday. I’m making the brave step to not calorie count today and simply to trust my appetite, following the advice of my hypno, and I can do it.

Check me out, being all positive and confident.

thenewaverage dropped 7lb very quickly, then gained and lost the same few lbs for a while. Keto for me needs calorie restriction.
Your Friday night sounds lovely, as does the not calorie counting! Do you mind me asking what your starting weight was?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 22/09/2018 08:29

Number I originally started at 13.7 after my son was born, lost 21lb, but then yo-yo-ed around for ages and then in December decided to do one last proper round of 8 weeks- started at 12.7. So I’m around 2stone 5 down, and gone from a 14 to an 8-10 as well. I started running and now run miles every week which has so dramatically changed my body shape. It is crazy when I look at the measurements (my weight has been pretty static tbh in the last few months) but it’s something like 8 inches off my hips, 4 inches off my upper arm etc. I have to pinch myself sometimes.

Made a lasagne last night using butternut squash lasagne sheets. Turned out really well, I thought they would shrink away to nothing but they didn't and remained quite firm. I would definitely recommend them

quince2figs · 22/09/2018 13:44

That sounds lovely, train. Was the rest veggie or meat?

onanothertrain · 22/09/2018 19:20

quince it was veggie and adapted from a pastry recipe I already had. Chestnuts, onion, mushroom, smoked cheese, herbs, mascarpone.

quince2figs · 22/09/2018 21:45

Wow, delicious! I remember seeing a Hairy Bikers loser calorie recipe, where they used layers of unfurled, blanched leek instead of lasagne sheets. It also sounded great, but I imagined must be very difficult to cut through, with visions of a whole thin leek layer escaping onto the fork....

IJustWantToWearDungarees · 22/09/2018 22:13

Oooh that sounds lovely, train. Would you mind posting a recipe? Love lasagne.

onanothertrain · 23/09/2018 11:43

I'll put it on the recipe thread, I'll have to guess amounts as I usually just wing it.
I'll also try and work out carb / calorie count too....

IJustWantToWearDungarees · 23/09/2018 12:47

That would be amazing! Thank you! Grin

onanothertrain · 23/09/2018 13:30

Done!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/09/2018 20:10

Onanother great! I will have a look, I love trying new things.

I’ve had a reasonable day again, did a fast 6km this morning but have felt sick all day and so have pretty much lounged about on the sofa all day and have done less than 10k steps in total.

Food wise, I’ve had the best weekend in a long time. I haven’t calorie counted, but I haven’t veered too far from the BSD path either, except for a slither of cake and a wagon wheel! Had 2 small glasses of wine (compared to my usual 1-2 bottles!) and I’ve been doing lots of things that were discussed in my hypno such as drinking water before each meal, only eating food from a plate at the table (ie not grazing at the fridge door) and really chewing my food slowly and only eating when I’m actually hungry. Some good changes.

The week ahead looks busy- lots of birthday related shopping, cooking and other jobs. Food is planned and shopping list written, I’m using joe wicks this week. I have two birthday cakes to make and ice which will be my major hurdle to overcome but I will have to be strong!

Thanks so much train! Will give it a go! 😀

onanothertrain · 24/09/2018 19:43

Back on it today, 950 calories and 38g carbs. I don't think I'm going to be able to have the odd cheat meal as it just seems to lead to more and more carbs. I was surprised at how bad i felt after half a pizza Shock. I always loved pizza 😭

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 24/09/2018 20:22

Tentatively sticking my head in. Day 3. Main issue is I only like bananas and apples when it comes to fruit so am having to focus on veg to fill the gap. Tried passion fruit with yoghurt and almonds today and could only tolerate one mouthful! Made the courgette muffins at the weekend - they are not good Grin Start a new job in 8 weeks and I will not be the day girl in the office! Starting out around 14st7 - about 3 years ago I got down to 11st13 through diet, exercise, breastfeeding (and a sickness bug that helped me over the 12st marker - not recommended!). Would love to be 2st down in time for December when I know he indulgences will start kicking back in. Will try and keep posting here to keep me honest

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 24/09/2018 20:22

fat girl Hmm

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/09/2018 20:41

Onanothertrain that’s good. I agree about the cheat meals. Once very occasionally is ok, but when it gets to where every weekend is a carb fest then it actually spoils the enjoyment of the diet somewhat, because it just becomes a weekly detox from the weekends.

Ginger your tastes will changed so don’t necessarily write stuff off. I buy frozen raspberries and cherries and have them on my yogurt, they are very tart but really delicious. Also, there is nothing wrong with designing your own menu if you don’t like the book. I get a different recipe book from the library each week and cook the things that take my fancy, and just substitute or leave out the carbs. I’m using joe wicks this week, but last week it was Gordon Ramsey (too poncey really for weekday teatime!)

I’ve had a good day today, I’m still not calorie counting as I’m really trying to be guided by my appetite. We are all unwell in our house, so no supermarket shop today- I ate a portion of stew for lunch from the freezer, and then for dinner I found a bolognese in the freezer, but it was horrible; ended up throwing it away. I feel very sick, quite delicate, so picked at some babybel cheese and ham. I’d imagine I’ve come in at around 800 today based on that.

Hopefully I’ll feel better tomorrow, I am a terrible patient and it looks like the dc will be off with it tomorrow too based on the sound of coughing from upstairs.....

OP posts:
onanothertrain · 24/09/2018 20:48

ginger I also buy frozen raspberries and have them with Greek yoghurt for breakfast. I've found melon to not be too bad as well.
