Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Today's NSV: went to an event I thought was on the first floor, was unexpectedly on the 3rd, so ended up climbing 3 double flights of stairs. No knee pain, and not out of breath; if I'd done that 1 Jan, I would be gasping by the second floor. My slimmer, ostensibly healthier colleague got out of breath, and I didn't.

Dinner tonight is a random "roast-whatever-veg-remains-in-frig and have it with some nice lean bacon and baby spinach" salad. Because I didn't get around to defrosting anything. Whoops!

In case anyone interested, these from Asda

LOVE cauli rice hate bulgar! What does ‘NSV’ mean very - well done 3 floors of stairs!!! I’m puffed out thinking about it! I’m hoping MM doesn’t read this thread after I called him ‘baby hands’! Blush

Snowglobes · 07/06/2018 19:38

Not able to find last nights prog. What was it called please? Those look good flight but no Asda near me! So now I’ve got these to miss out on as well as ‘George’.

Snowglobes · 07/06/2018 20:00

Finally found it!!!

AvonCallingBarksdale · 07/06/2018 20:39

Ooh broccoli and courgette rice looks interesting I’ll look out for that.

veryveryquietly · 07/06/2018 20:52

Snowglobes it stands for Non Scale Victory. So when you have good results that aren't just about the changing numbers on the scale.

ChocEggNoThanks · 07/06/2018 21:24

Ha! After linking to the programme haven't managed to watch it myself yet. Cauli rice - I normally hate it BUT the Tesco frozen one is nice with curry. Coming in at 900 cals today. Was on target for an 800 then ate a careless mouthful of seeds - bloody hell, over 100 calories! Hoping for a small loss tomorrow.

Oblomov18 · 07/06/2018 21:27

I too like the look of that Asda broccoli and courgette rice.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 07/06/2018 21:36

Was doing well today - it was tough but manageable but DH has done a monumentally shit thing so I ate chocolate. Because that turns back time and changes things apparently. Now sitting with DS2 in a&e as he was inventing a new magic trick and trying to make a coin disappear while lying in bed reading the dangerous book for boys and he swallowed a penny...

Snowglobes · 07/06/2018 22:30

Oh no amazing sitting in A&E won’t be fun. Blooming kids!
We could probably make the brocolli rice ourselves but I’m less sure about the courgette bit - even raw they’re quite soggy for a rice.

Snowglobes · 08/06/2018 05:15

Yeah! I’m back down to my pre-half term weight. It’s taken 4 days to loose the 4lb I put on at half term. So now 11.04.4 & just 1lb to go for it to be a stone lost since starting around 7-8 weeks ago. Another stone to go.
I’m really worried about next weekend as staying at a friends. She’s text saying we’ll have pizzas and a few drinks one eve. The next eve is a BIG party at their house with canapés and drinks. Canapés are never BSD friendly. And Pizza! Damn. What can I do? It’d be way too weird to take my own food! How can I do this the BSD (800 cal) way pls?

PrimalLass · 08/06/2018 08:00

I've been avoiding this thread as I've been so dreadful food wise. Too many weekends away etc and not enough planning. I must read back through and catch up.

After faffing about for a few weeks, today I am back in the game. Holiday is booked so I'd like to lose at least half a stone in 4.5 weeks.

Somehow, despite being a carby nightmare, I've not really put any of it back on.

Slight fly in the ointment is that I want us to just eat what's in the freezer for the rest of the month as booking the holiday has broken us Shock

thenewaveragebear1983 · 08/06/2018 08:09

This week hasn’t exactly gone to plan for me, probably because there wasn’t really a plan! Just going to muddle through today and tomorrow (we have ds’s birthday party with 12 six year olds coming tomorrow so will need wine in the evening!) keeping on just doing BSD meals- but then will do a full meal plan to cover next week. I keep running out of things and having to go to the supermarket and seem to have spent a fortune this week. Like you primal I could do with clearing the freezer a bit and saving some money!

Salad for lunch, with cheese. I’ve still not had any sweeteners or any pork products this week which I’m pleased about, but I am finding I need a replacement for ham in my lunches. Need to think of some options. Tonight we have steaks, and I’m going to have mine with garlic and cream mushrooms while the others have chips!

ChocEggNoThanks · 08/06/2018 08:24

Ha! Think there's something in the air with the freezers, I'm desperately trying to run ours down too. I need room for my frozen cauli rice and frozen quinoa, aka lifesavers.

Hope your son is ok Shrink. That is the sort of thing DH would have done as a child 🙈

1lb off this morning, 19lbs total. Going to try and do a long fast today and save my cals for decent dinner and the tub of Halo ice cream I bought!

PrimalLass · 08/06/2018 08:31

bear I am going to empty out the freezers and write it all down then put together meal ideas and stick the list to the fridge. I was too prescriptive last time and did it by day, which didn't work. We are rarely all here to sit down and eat together at night. Another thing I do is just list what is in there and put that on the fridge, then cross it out and we use it.

veryveryquietly · 08/06/2018 09:10

Nice weigh in this morning. Have had a long, long plateau/maintaining/couldn't be arsed period (since beginning of May) but this past week things are back in gear. Total loss now 4 stone 8 lbs since January - I am officially 1 lb past the halfway mark, as my goal was to lose 9 stone. Not quite the home stretch, but still!

I'm finding that I just can't keep below 850 cals/day, which was what I was doing Jan-April. Especially now that I've built in some light exercise. But a slightly looser version, that sticks to general principles but averages around 1000 cals/day, seems to be working ok for me. Was probably unrealistic to stay on the stricter version long-term anyway, past two cycles.

Happy weekend all!

PrimalLass · 08/06/2018 09:11

I like the Asda frozen cauli rice. It is the best I've tried but v popular so I buy lots when they have it in stock. The Tesco version isn't as good.

PrimalLass · 08/06/2018 09:12

Brilliant weight loss very

veryveryquietly · 08/06/2018 09:28

Thanks primal!

So has the penny 'dropped' yet, shrinking? Or do you have a few days of panning for copper ahead of you?

AvonCallingBarksdale · 08/06/2018 09:46

Very 4st 8lbs since January? That’s amazing - well done!!

Oblomov18 · 08/06/2018 12:59

Well done Very !!!

I have now watched the truth about carbs. I thought it was a bit poor. He sounded Amazed and oblivious - he hasn't heard anything about it? but this is been going on for years. Michael Mosley's book has been out for a long time and all the diabetic websites and the British diabetic association have it all over their pages for years, and there's tons and tons of information about research into these areas that been going on for the last 5 to 10 years, if not longer.

he sounded like a bit of a prat to be honest and I thought his advice was really rather weak and I thought it was a bit poor it - I know it was aimed at the general public but it really made me quite cross.

Oblomov18 · 08/06/2018 12:59

Amazing hope ds is ok.

Snowglobes · 08/06/2018 14:17

Agree oblomov it’s wasn’t anything new was it? Although I’d not heard if the sugar mouthwash idea before. Don’t run so not necessary. Maybe bear has heard this before. Jeez very that’s an incredible loss - well done you!! And very funny pun with penny dropping!! I also need to empty the freezer(s). Yes plural!!! And think I’ll be copying primal’s splendid idea and sticking contents on the fridge.
Had the fried rice idea for lunch & will be having steaks with the annoyingly calorific coleslaw from MMs book. Too scared to do a sauce as it’ll end up 1000cals! Maybe a rub?
Still no ideas how I can visit friends and not eat their pizzas and canapés anyone? 🙏🏼
