Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Snow if it was me I’d do one of two things - either sack it off and accept that I was going to indulge and get seriously back on it on Monday. Or, if they were good friends, I would just take my own stuff. It might be a bit odd but I’m working hard to go this and, personally, I don’t have the willpower to have “just a taste”, certainly not at the moment!

AvonCallingBarksdale · 08/06/2018 14:57

..working hard to do this, not go Confused

Snowglobes · 08/06/2018 15:17

avon I think you’re right! 2 choices. Prefer to take a few bits of my own I think as I’ve had so many days off recently that I’m hardly ever on it!! I could do a couple of huge aubergine lasagnes (are they nice?) for the ten of us to have (rather than pizza). Unless anyone can think of another big batch type recipe that’ll appeal to 6 kids and 4 adults?

ChocEggNoThanks · 08/06/2018 17:30

Snow Lentil Bolognese is really nice and you can have it with courgetti or salad / roasted veg. It's a good crowd pleaser if you want something veggie.

You're not selling the BBC programme to me - could anyone explain the sugar rinse and save me the bother of watching it? 😁

I have halloumi in bbq sauce ready for dinner. Going to have salad and asparagus with it, then some Halo ice cream if I fancy it.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 08/06/2018 17:40

I thought the same Oblomov, we know this all already!

The glucose rinsing thing was basically that if you swill a sugar solution round your mouth and then spit it out while exercising, it has the same effect on boosting your energy as if you’d actually consumed it. Something to do with the body’s response to glucose, as opposed to the actual glucose. (The added benefit is you’ll probably lose weight doing this because you’ll have no teeth left after a few weeks).

Just done a run (9km) in the grey muggy heat after a long day at work which probably wasn’t my best idea! Now making cupcakes and filling party bags with sweets for ds’s party- I really do know how to test myself!

For the pizza party I’d take an amazing salad and some dips- they can have it with pizza, you can have it as it is. No one will even know......!!

Now I'm a bit worried about shrinking's DS - hope he's ok and she's just off-line because they're catching up on sleep after a night in a&e.

Choc the idea with the rinse was that if you swirl the sports drink in your mouth and then spit it out, it makes you burn calories as you exercise more efficiently...so more of them. Something about tricking your body into thinking it's about to get carbs? All I could think is great, now everyone's going to be swilling and spitting at the gym, ick, hideous.

veryveryquietly · 08/06/2018 17:46

Jinx with bear - but your explanation is better.

veryveryquietly · 08/06/2018 17:51

Had a student give a presentation today about nutrition advice and health communication. She pointed out that much of the advice is to track your calories, and then said "but how could you do that? That's SO boring." I didn't comment (on that) but could only think, honey, you do not even know how boring it is. And yet, it's oddly compelling once you've started.

Ah, to be in one's early twenties, places to go, people to see, no time - or need - to count calories.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 08/06/2018 18:11

Very I also love tracking my calories. I find it very therapeutic. I much prefer doing it the old skool way (buying a lovely notebook and writing it all down) than these new fangled ways but I still love it. When we moved house, I threw out about 8 years worth of notebooks!

Thank you for your concern - he's absolutely fine. No panning for gold required, they told us to take him back if he gets stomach cramps. X-ray of lungs fine and they think the pain was it passing his diaphragm. Sorry not to update sooner. Friday is my manic day plus shit with DH and bit ashamed of how I've been eating. Will go back on it asap but things v bad here Sad

veryveryquietly · 08/06/2018 18:34

Glad he's ok shrinking but sorry everything else seems to be a bit shit - hope it improves soon!

veryveryquietly · 08/06/2018 18:37

bear I tried not counting on days I was on holiday but I can't stop now. And it certainly does make a difference. That and reading labels, which I now do with the enthusiasm and commitment of a columnist for Good Housekeeping.

Oblomov18 · 08/06/2018 18:55

Very Dh is concerned that I'm obsessed because I rummage around in the recycling bin trying to scan a label.

Even reading that back, it sounds bad. Grin

Oblomov18 · 08/06/2018 18:56

Take care Amazing

PrimalLass · 08/06/2018 19:10

Snowglobes

Could you make a cauli pizza for you? Or one from a wrap instead?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 08/06/2018 19:11

Amazing hope you are ok?

I’ve just had a ten minute blow out binge on crap that I didn’t even want and certainly didn’t need. Hate how I do this to myself, virtually negates my run today in a matter of minutes. I will blame the fact that I’m due on, and also very tired, but still.

I was invigilating an exam today and was planning a few nice meals in my head, so will plot those out for next week once the dc are in bed. I need a sure plan for next week, one big shop at the beginning of the week, and then I need to actually stick to the plan!!!

PrimalLass · 08/06/2018 20:48

I just had a slice of (gf) toast and jam, if that makes you feel any better.

ChocEggNoThanks · 08/06/2018 21:09

That halloumi and asparagus was lush! Today was so much easier because I was working from home so just wasn't as hungry. Feeling snacky tonight though. Torn between the Halo ice cream and some little crackers.

Going to make some cheese 'crackers' over the weekend - they are in the BSD Diet Recipe Book. 100g cheddar, 100g of parmesan and I think 100g of almond flour. Mixed and baked on a tray till it melts then leave to cool into little cheese bites.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 08/06/2018 21:17

Aaarghh DD made some chocolate chip cookies after school today. She’s 11 and made them completely on her own, so I decided to have one and they were delish. So for some reason I went on to have another 3 Hmm Zero willpower. I actually do much better when I abstain completely. Hey ho, run tomorrow morning and will try to fast till midday.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 08/06/2018 21:30

Right, I’ve planned for next week- 5 new lunches/salad toppings, and 4 new dinners with 3 old classics in there for family harmony. I really need a good shake up. I do love salads but I do them to death so I’ve planned some new additions (spicy taco mixed beans, roasted veg, and kedgeree for example) and for evening meals I have just avoided those 5 meals we have every single week. Time for some variety and some new flavours I think!

Hoping the dire days improve amazing - sending love!
I messed up today as had a glass of wine with DH, then 2, then 3.... Had planned to quickly do steaks with pre-prepared coleslaw but everyone wanted takeaway curry. 😱 so I ended up having a lot of saag paneer and tandoori chicken. If I’d not drunk the wine I’d have been less lazy and would have insisted on cooking a good dinner as planned. Why can I not just have ONE glass and stop?

Oblomov18 · 09/06/2018 04:04

I too had wine and then chocolate with nuts. Now awake at 4am!! Angry Zero willpower!!

thefishwhocouldwish · 09/06/2018 07:40

Well it sounds like lots of us had Friday night off!

I don't have a social life, just a DH 4500 miles away and an 18yo drowning in A level revision, so it was another quiet night in at my house. I'm down just over 15lbs now and it will be 6 weeks on Monday (with about five days off while away last week).

Yesterday I wore some new trousers that I'd bought at the end of April. I didn't try them on in the shop but when I got home found I could not zip them up. It wasn't even close, there was just a V shape where the zip should have met! Now I can get them on and do them up easily with room to spare. Earlier this week I wore my navy suit trousers that used to be really snug and I had to keep hoiking them up. I've always carried excess weight around my tummy and bum and BSD has certainly helped with that.

I'm up early with an endless to do list. Have a good Saturday everyone!

PrimalLass · 09/06/2018 08:42

Snowglobes, I swapped to drinking gin because of the 'just one' thing. I used to open a bottle of wine and finish it. I very rarely have more than two g&ts unless on a night out.

Wine does get me far drunker and more hungover too Smile

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/06/2018 08:54

Me too primal, I find it much easier to just have one g&t than leave a glass of wine.
