Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

9.13 is my target too. At my heaviest that was 6 stone 2 away. It's now a much more manageable 3 stone 11.

Westwing1 · 28/07/2018 12:14

Amazing you have lost a lot of weight! Do you have a specific goal for back to work in September? I have lost 17 lbs since January and absolutely no one has noticed (bar DH who is given daily up-dates!). I am not vain, always been ordinary looking but I confess I would like to go back to the school run in September and have someone say hi West have you lost weight, you look nice. Not one of my blooming friends has noticed either. I guess that's why I need my BSD thread buddies.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 28/07/2018 12:22

I would really like to be below 13 stone in September. So another 11lb in just over 5 weeks. Might just make it! Enough for people to notice would be lovely. And I'd like to have nicer work clothes. I've got stuck in a rut with work stuff, mostly because I base it round footwear that I can bear to wear at this weight. I'm in that trap at the moment of not buying anything nice or expensive because I'm losing weight. The reality of that is that I'm wearing cheap, badly cut ill-fitting clothes. Not the look I'm going for! Add the fact that I'm a TA so need to be able to do lots of walking, running and getting dirty and it gets even harder! Plain, well cut capsule wardrobe in nice fabrics is the eventual goal. Maybe I need a new job...

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 28/07/2018 12:26

Your friends may have noticed but just not said anything because it can be awkward. Or they're jealous!

Westwing1 · 28/07/2018 12:50

That's kind of you Amazing but all of my RL friends are tiny bendy Pilates/yoga types so no chance they are jealous. There is no easy solution to the clothes problem, I get the not wanting to invest in good new clothes while losing weight. It is temporary though, by Christmas you will have cracked it and can have a massive wardrobe clear out. In the meantime you could have fun and start making notes for your capsule wardrobe, brands you like ..

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 28/07/2018 15:30

That is such a good idea! Will start looking.

Have just been researching m&s salad recipes so I can recreate the little pots if loveliness at home. I'll need to calorie count and work out weights/proportions of everything but a nice project for the summer holidays. I'm sure most of the dressings will contain sugar in some form though. As long as it keeps me under 800 I'm not too worried.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 28/07/2018 19:43

Closing the kitchen on 930 calories and about a billion carbs Grin

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/07/2018 21:44

I’m closing on not many carbs but probably quite a few calories!

Had basically ham, salad and cheese for lunch, then a whopper of a rib eye steak and salad for dinner and two glasses of Barolo (v nice expensive red wine). But then I have done 20k steps and ran a ridiculous 13km this morning in the lovely rainy cool!

When I weighed in this morning I first put the scales not in my usual spot, and they fluttered around at 9.13. Oh the joy! But then in efforts to be honest with myself I moved them to my usual tile on the bathroom floor and it was 10.3. So still good, but that 9 is tantalisingly close!

One more really strict week of running, keeping the carbs low and counting and tracking is on the agenda I think!!

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 29/07/2018 07:55

Well done on your honesty, Bear!

Another pound off - only 1/2 a pound more and I will have lost 10% of my body weight since 18th May. Head feels in the game. I re-read Never Binge Again yesterday and I think it helped.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 29/07/2018 08:00

Forgot to report my NSV from last week - went to give blood in April and my iron was too low. Went on Wednesday and the sample dropped like a stone, first time ever it hasn't risen and then been timed. Hooray for a healthy diet!

KevinTheYuccaPlant · 29/07/2018 09:20

10st 11lbs now, that's 10lbs off since I started and my lowest weight this year. 1lb away from BMI going back under 25. DH suggested lunch out today, but my willpower is not yet up to facing the all-you-can-eat dessert buffet at the carvery he wanted to go to!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 29/07/2018 09:35

Well done amazing and Kevin, great work.
An all you can eat buffet dessert table???!! No, I don’t think I could resist that either!

It’s raining and grey here today so I’m going to get busy doing some serious cleaning and tidying after being very lazy for weeks in the heat! Lunch will be eggs, dinner will be something with mince but not decided yet.

Back to counting calories today after a few days of freewheeling!

Just been experimenting with my new toy, a yogurt maker which I got for free on a Facebook local group. So I currently have 7 little pots of yoghurt festering (or whatever yoghurt does!) in the kitchen. It’s for Ds really so I will make some sugar free purée/compote to add to them. It’s all in a mission to get some live bacteria/probiotics into him before he starts nursery, as he has a very Rubbish immune system, after reading the clever guts book.

Well I am not long back from a 19mile walk in the pouring rain in preparation for the 52km walk I am doing in September!

No calorie counting today as a result and carbs have been consumed!

Back on plan tomorrow and hopefully not too stiff Grin

thenewaveragebear1983 · 29/07/2018 15:40

Cor, 52 miles! When/where is that? Sounds interesting!

OP posts:
Hoviscats · 29/07/2018 16:05

Not quite that long bear, 52 km! Long enough!!! Its a thames towpath walk. Should be good I hope Smile

thenewaveragebear1983 · 29/07/2018 16:11

Ah yes, read it wrong. Thought it was one of those crazy ultra marathons!

52km is still a long way though, is that over a weekend?

OP posts:
Hoviscats · 29/07/2018 19:36

No just one day! We start at 9 so depending on conditions and vomume of people we reckon it will take 12 hours probably includog stops for toilets etc as queues could be long!! Hoping for bearer to 10 but will see on the day.

I have run a couplw of marathons pre DCs so feel like the distabce is doable but its the time on your feet!!

Hoviscats · 29/07/2018 19:37

sorry about the awful typing!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 30/07/2018 07:54

10.2.6 for me this morning, which is something of a miracle as usually I gain a pound or two back by Sunday night, and also because I’m due on so was expecting a bit of water retention. Maybe my plateau is finally coming to the end!

Hovis your walk sounds fun especially if a group of you is doing it. Good luck!

DULLDull · 30/07/2018 08:10

I am joining as of today which means my 8 weeks will be up on September 25th. I have started with 30g cheddar and an apple. I know the apple isn't ideal but I am low on stock until Tesco delivers later.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 30/07/2018 08:57

Welcome dulldull, I recognise you from your chat thread. The Apple isn’t too bad provided you eat the peel, and as you had it with cheese as well. Any questions you have, please just ask.

My yogurt is ready- it’s rather a long process for basically something I can buy for a pound from Asda, and not sure it’s really worth it (when considering time/effort/washing up etc) but we’ll see. For the children it might be worth it, as I can do fruit flavoured, sugar free, full fat yogurt - but then I could do this with yoghurt and berries anyway. But, it has made 7 little rather hipster glass jars of yog with fruit swirled in it, and I suppose if I really wanted to trendy it up I could add some chia seeds and serve it on a slate tray.....Grinif I’d paid for the machine I’d be a bit miffed but as it was free then it’s not so traumatic, and I can make 1 litre of full fat yogurt for the price of 1l full fat uht milk (so about 50p?). We will report back after eating!

OP posts:
ponygirlcurtis · 30/07/2018 11:30

Sounds nice bear - I like the idea of the hipster presentation most of all I think! Grin

I haven't been posting much, nothing much to report as I am just maintaining over the summer holidays. Have pencilled in to restart next Sunday but realistically it might be the following Sunday. Today I have both my wildest dream and my worst nightmare - received a very kind invite to an afternoon tea. Sandwiches and lashings of cake. As a long-term low-carber I haven't had a sandwich in about 4 years, much less following it up with several sweet treats. I won't be able to eat many cakes I don't think. Might need to stash some tupperware in my bag and sneak stuff into to to bring home! I am a bit frightened what all the carbs/sugar will do to my system when it's not used to it but I guess it's a one off so will try to enjoy it - it's more about the company than the food after all.

waterandlemonjuice · 30/07/2018 13:04

Hello, can I join you? Am very cross at how enormous I've let myself become but am starting tomorrow on 8 week BSD. I've been ill though with a bug and so haven't eaten for 2 days, which has nicely kick started me, my stomach has definitely gone down I think. I have a lot of weight to lose, sadly but am highly motivated.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 30/07/2018 13:36

Hi Water. Welcome to the most supportive and nonjudgmental thread on MN!

Have you got a plan for the 8 weeks or are you winging it? What's your target (if you don't mind me asking, feel free to tell me to bugger off!)?
