Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Look away now if you’re of a nervous disposition, but this is what I’ve spent the evening creating and I did not even sample the tiniest smidgen of chocolate fudge icing for fear of diving headfirst into the bowl.

Hovis the fat thing is one of the biggest hurdles to jump on this plan, especially if you’ve done conventional diets before. It goes against the grain to eat lots of fat while craving carbs, but it really does help dull your appetite.

I’ve struggled without my sweetener today, had three coffees which to be honest were ok without it, but I have been seeking sweet out all day. I’ve managed to resist, but have gone over my calories allowance and done a bit of picking. Did a short 4km on the treadmill, 20k steps and probably about 1400 cals when I add on the few nibbles I’ve just had while making dh’s salad! My plan for an 800 calorie week is not exactly happening.

Urgh I am doing so badly! Eating mostly the right things so none of the obvious baddies but having ice cream each night just because it's hot. I reckon I've had 1500 calories today thanks to the ice cream although at least it's a high quality very creamy one. So lots of beans and Quorn, then hummus chickpeas and cauliflower cheese tonight. I feel hungry at the minute but know I'm probably dehydrated.

Must eat more veg and drink more water or else just accept I need to maintain for a while.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 06/06/2018 21:42

Bear that cake is beautiful! Well done for resisting the icing.

ponygirlcurtis · 06/06/2018 23:10

I have had my first meal out on BSD and I am stuffed to the guddles - not used to eating so much! Starter was a lovely goats cheese salad with pesto and pine nuts. Main was burger (without the bun) with a little coleslaw and tomato. So all v BSD friendly. Apart from all the chips, which I also. Grin But my lunch was very light and hopefully I am still under my tdee so fingers crossed no real damage and maybe a bit of a carb refeed to boost things. Although the combo of the rare carbs and the sugar from my two lime-and-sodas has made me feel really odd - my heart was beating fast at one point!

ponygirlcurtis · 06/06/2018 23:11

Your cake is amazing bear, you are very talented.

BetterEatCheese · 06/06/2018 23:13

Ha ha @ponygirlcurtis I know what you mean. I was writing an assignment a few days ago and it was early hours and I was exhausted, so had a biscuit. I felt like I was on drugs!! The sugar hit me like a train!

Snowglobes · 06/06/2018 23:44

VeryVery Roasted cauli with Parmesan sounds gorgeous! Thank you. Don’t know how you can make cake without sampling some of it bear

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/06/2018 07:28

Ah thanks, if it had been cake mix it would have been a different story but I cheated and used ready made Swiss roll!

Stepped in the scales this morning and I’m now 10.7, so 3lb off this week so far. Surprised by that as I’ve had a lot of calories, so maybe it’s the effect of eating live yogurt and cutting out sweetener? Surely not? I don’t record my gains, only my losses so my graph is very much a straight line (only half a stone loss in 2 months, although I know I’ve yo-yoed around a lot), but glad my big push to the finish seems to be starting off well.

Off to the park with Ds this morning with my BSD friend, we usually have a good chat about it although she doesn’t really do it ‘properly’. Lunch, I really fancy something fishy, so I might have a tin of tuna with some lemon and chilli and black pepper (and ketchup, a tiny bit, don’t tell anyone!) and some salad.

Ok I need your help. Going out for dinner on Saturday and have attached menu. I have a will of iron at the moment and am happy to ask for things to be changed/omitted. But I'm at a bit of a loss. The only thing that looks like it might work is the artichokes but i sort of resent paying that much for a plate of veg! Any suggestions?

shrinking the seafood options look like good bets - for the mains, you could ask for the trout with double the kale and no potato puree, or the lemon sole and samphire would be absolutely fine. Or the beef, but ask for a green salad rather than the chips.

I've found restaurants are generally fine subbing out things with a simple green salad or double green veg instead of potatoes/rice.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/06/2018 07:54

I’d second very, any main course but ask for seasonal veg with it instead of chips/potato/rice. All looks delicious though!

OP posts:
Oblomov18 · 07/06/2018 09:38

Bear, your cake is amazing. I love him, he's so sweet!
Amazing, agree the whole menu looks scrummy. Scallops, samphire, my favourites. Agree with pp Easy to ask for no potatoes, more green veg or salad instead of potatoes.

I, with my no kitchen, have been invited to my sil's for a roast tonight. I am a bit worried how I will get away with this, because so far this week I've been doing ok:
479,(which sounds low but did include lunchtime salad, then chicken curry with cauliflower rice) , 752, 750.
We'll see.

Oblomov18 · 07/06/2018 09:53

Oh. Btw, I still haven't given up Diet Coke. On this 'woe'/diet, it's the only thing that keeps me going.

I know it's not good. But with everything else I've given up...... I think I need to be realistic.

My cravings haven't/don't go away. I still miss crisps. I love nuts and chocolate.

With no kitchen, All our meals seem to require military planning these days. I had sausages in the freezer, so Got Dh to cook the sausages on the garden bbq. I heated up 2 tubs of mash, and a bowl of peas - that I'd never done in the microwave before!!

I had roasted peppers (from the freezer) and goasts cheese.

As I dished up Dh's and Ds's sausages mash and peas, I looked at it. Thinking: on that plate are some of my favourite things. Sad

Then, as I dished up, I licked the mashed potato spoon. I had this whoosh of desire. How, like Bear not diving into her chocolate cake, how I didn't bury my head in the second plastic tub of mash, I don't know.

But what it does tell me is that I have so way to go, because obviously my cravings haven't gone away!!

amazing as above pp have said ask for no rice/potatoes etc and more veg/salad. I’ve done this loads and it’s always been very acceptable! No funny looks or anything. I think waiters etc are used to it. oblomov can you have the roast without the potatoes? Must be a nightmare having no kitchen!!!
Tuna with lemon & Chilli sounds yum bear! Must be lovely having a BSD friend in real life (even if it is only BSDish)
I’m 72.4kg so definitely loosing what I put on last week! I had got to 71! But unlike bear I record ups as well as downs and it’s been very yo-yo last 2 weeks. I weigh daily though as want to really watch it.

Snowglobes · 07/06/2018 10:06

oblomov your DH etc are lucky! I’d have given them cauli mash!!! I rarely serve mine something yummy that I can’t adapt for me. So I’d have the sausage & peas but done me the cauli mash (given them proper mash as youngest doesn’t like cauli mash but only made enough normal so none spare for me)! Otherwise sooooo hard!!!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/06/2018 10:49

It becomes second nature after a while though. It is so long since I’ve eaten rice or pasta I just don’t even think about it anymore. The only time I really feel it is if they’re all having sandwiches or pancakes or pizza - things with no option to substitute. Same as how it’s now second nature to just avoid the biscuit aisles and the kids yoghurts (we put the dc on a sugar reduction in January!), and I honestly cannot remember the last time I ate a biscuit. It just becomes a habit. It’s a massive cliches, but your willpower is like a muscle that gets stronger every time you use it.

OP posts:
thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/06/2018 11:06

It is nice having a BSD friend in real life, it’s good to have someone who understands the low carb stuff and doesn’t ask a million questions. Except she doesn’t really do it (always has been ‘really good’ up til the day I see her and happens to be having a day off that day!) and I do sometimes want to tell her that it won’t work if it she doesn’t do it!!! Never do though.

One thing I’ve started though, is now when people ask me how I’ve lost so much weight, rather than be self deprecating and just say ‘ooooh I’m really dull and gave up sugar’ I actually now say ‘I’ve been working really hard and gone low carb and sugar free, and I run every day’ - because I bloody have worked hard, and my nature (especially around my other dieting friends) is to feel a bit guilty that it’s worked for me (that’s ridiculous, I know). I think people think there’s some miracle magic wand, when the reality is there isn’t- it’s just saying no thanks to lots and lots of things over a prolonged period of time, and hauling my carcass out regardless of weather or apathy- every single day. Making new habits.

OP posts:
Snowglobes · 07/06/2018 12:56

Absolutely let people know you’re working hard!!!

Oblomov18 · 07/06/2018 13:39

I agree. Don't downplay it. People need to realise that this takes really hard work and commitment.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/06/2018 14:18

I’m always wary though, I think because people are very defensive of their need to eat carbs/sweets. Cutting down, yes; but cutting out completely and people think you’ve joined some sort of cult. Especially when other people are eating it, I really try not to discuss BSD (but obviously that’s hard because usually the conversation arises because I’ve said no to something offered) and I think if I actually told them really why i don’t eat it, it would spoil their food. No one wants to be friends with that person! So I tend to downplay it. I heard myself saying ‘I’m skinny but I’m miserable’ a few weeks ago, and inside I was screaming ‘I’m not miserable, I’m freaking elated!!!!’ It’s hard because I know it works and would work for a lot of my friends who are still battling in with weight watchers, and counting syns, and eating low fat, but I don’t want to be a preacher. I wonder if I’m the future there will be real life groups/ weigh in clubs for this way of eating

(Michael, I know you read this thread.... I’d be a great leader for your first ever BSD community group)

Anyone rinsing with glucose?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/06/2018 15:35

I haven’t watched it yet. Rinsing with glucose? Sounds bizarre! There’s one on tonight on C5 called ‘lose a stone in 4 weeks’ I think, and I bet that’s a low carb thing because it’s probably the easiest way to do that!

AvonCallingBarksdale · 07/06/2018 16:13

Hi all. Quick question. We’re having a veggie curry tomorrow night - I don’t like cauliflower rice. What’s the opinion on bulgur wheat as a goodish rice alternative? Think they mentioned that last night as a potential substitute. Currently on week 2 - loss in week 1 was 4lbs. Thanks Smile

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/06/2018 16:47

I can’t abide cauli rice! I’d personally just do some roasted cauliflower (or do a paste of tandoori powder and yogurt and smear it all over cauli then really slowly bake in the oven) rather than bulgar wheat- but then I do avoid grains, whereas some on here do have small portions occasionally.
