Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Pony it was alright, but not sure if I was expecting too much of it (in the way that homemade cake is always nicer than bought) - it was just yoghurt. I’ll persevere. It was nice with a few raspberries squished up in it! I’m not sure if it was because I ate it for breakfast but I feel all ‘sugary’ and it reminded me that I stopped having lactose in large amounts on an empty stomach for exactly this reason.

Welcome to you water, you’re in the right place. I’ve never known of anyone who has tried this diet properly and who hasn’t lost weight, and some people lose loads. If you have any questions, please ask. Do you have the book?

Weird day today. Accidentally went quite far over what I was planning for lunch (650 instead of 400 cal) and was completely freaking out that I would be starving all afternoon and wouldn't cope but actually I was fine. I had an apple and some really mature cheddar for supper and I'm satisfied and pretty chuffed with myself. DD has baked a batch of ginger biscuits and I'm just enjoying the smell. I don't need one. Not sure how long it will last but hooray for this feeling of calm resolve.

I'm managing every other day really well at the moment. Root canal surgery tomorrow so will need to eat plenty before or I get quite faint but probably won't fancy anything after.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 30/07/2018 20:28

Its all gone horribly wrong for me this afternoon/evening. I’m due on abc hormonal and tired and cranky, which is no excuse really but that’s all I’ve got! Probably had 3000 calories (not even joking) and now feel bloated and yuck and above all, really pissed off with myself.

I don’t binge often, but clearly I still haven’t broken that particular urge when things get tough.

Tomorrow is a new shiny day though!

Bear, be kind to yourself. I was like that yesterday (3rd period in 6 weeks, fucking perimenopause).

thenewaveragebear1983 · 30/07/2018 20:51

Amazing I know, it’s just rubbish isn’t it! In calorie terms, it a max of 1lb’s worth, but it’s the headfuckery that really annoys me!

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 30/07/2018 21:00

Very hard to forgive yourself and move on. Remember your body is strong and amazing and I for one am in awe of what you've achieved. I ate a ridiculous amount of cheese and biscuits last night. After already having a chocolate binge. Ive just put it into MFP and total for yesterday 2600 cal as a rough estimate. I think I need to put it in whatever else happens so even if it's really high at least I'm honest with myself.

veryveryquietly · 30/07/2018 21:02

OK, trying to be strict again and get back in the losing groove. Have been goofing off for probably 6 weeks and luckily haven't gained any back but haven't lost any more either.

Didn't make it to the gym today (very long work day) but have clocked in at 836 cals and 36 gr carbs

Also a good reminder that skipping breakfast and having an early lunch instead really works for me.

Dinner was delish: salt and pepper prawns with bok choy and cauli rice. Glad I saved half of it to have for lunch tomorrow!

NoUnderpantsinSpace · 30/07/2018 21:33

Hello! I was attempting 5:2 and BCF suggested that I look into the BSD because I have a clear carb and sugar problem (it wasn't really news to me... sadly).

Anyway, I'm currently on holiday and I've read the book and found it really exciting. I'd love to try and do 2-4 weeks of the BSD. I have been overweight for my entire adult life and more recently my belly seems to have grown Sad I didn't really carry my weight on my belly before - it was much more bum and thighs yay?

I have about 20kg to loose and I have a few questions about the BSD that the book hasn't answered but I hope you lovely lot can help me Smile

My aim is to try and shift 10kg doing this and then revert back to 5:2 once I feel like I have my carbs under control.
One problem I have is ADHD, I'll need to talk to my dr about my stimulant medication and just check, but I don't see it being an issue. It leads to impulse control issues and there are definitely a range of foods that I am quite sensitive too (sugar included).

Right... so after all that waffle my questions appear to have wandered off. I will try and find them and post again tomorrow Smile

thenewaveragebear1983 · 31/07/2018 06:56

Thanks amazing
Very I totally agree about breakfast/lunch. I think that was the start of my downfall yesterday
Nounderpants welcome!

I feel yuck today. But brighter and optimistic. And hurrah my boys are going to granny’s today for two nights. I love them dearly but oh boy, they test my patience. So i’m going to the supermarket (my other issue yesterday was the total lack of BSD suitable food) and going for a nice long run.

I’m going to do my measurements today too, (annoyingly I can never find my notebook with the original ones in) but I wore jeans yesterday for the first time in weeks and they were noticeably looser, so thought a morale boosting measure-up might help!

My first day wasn't great but I am a learning curve. I had tin of tuna and salad for lunch but felt weak and yuk afterwards so ended up eating a nectarine. I held out until dinner when I had chicken breast with more salad but then ate a handful of pretzels Shock. I think I have some work to do.

veryveryquietly · 31/07/2018 07:27

Oh bear sorry you feel yuck. But brighter and optimistic is good. Bad days happen - and it sounds like a long run is just the ticket for helping.

I blew it too yesterday, with a bit of a late night chocolate episode. Still came in around 1000 cals so not absolutely horrible, but a reminder that I just really can't have the stuff in the house. Everything else I'm good on portion control, but my traitor brain seems to think once the nice bar of nice dark chocolate has been opened, the whole thing must be eaten. I've been trying to save one square or one row per evening as a treat, but one square my arse.

On the good side though, wore a dress yesterday that is verging on much too big, that was tight and uncomfortable last summer. A good reminder of what I'm trying to do, and the need to keep going.

No time for gym today, but have a long work day with a long site visit planned, so should do plenty of steps.

veryveryquietly · 31/07/2018 07:33

Dull the first week of BSD is hellish but that sounds like a good start. Just keep on it, it gets worse but then it gets much better (esp once you start losing).

Do you have some cheese or something around to snack on instead of pretzels? I find the satisfying fat of cheese plus the saltiness makes it a nice replacement for crisps, pretzels, and other similar munchies. I get the cathedral city minis, which are good for portion control (and for taking in your bag) - one 20g mini usually quells any urges for salty snacks. (They also have more of a bite than Babybels.)

Polpette · 31/07/2018 07:36

Welcome to BSD bigunderpants, BigChoc always has great advice so I'm sure this will work for your sugar/carb issues. I bet you'll do more than four weeks of BSD though, it gets addictive!

I did 5:2 a year ago and saw great results, I started BSD in June to kick start weight loss again (22lbs off in 8 weeks), I'm going to do a few more weeks before doing a stint of 5:2 followed by another round of BSD (a lot to lose!).

The first week is tough but by week two it's much easier. Good luck with getting started.

Alicatz66 · 31/07/2018 07:40

Thanks for the new thread, Bear. Welcome newbies!

Last day of our holiday here and all my clothes still fit, so I don’t think it has been too disastrous in terms of carbs. I’ve tried to be BSD-good without calorie counting, but have shared a bottle of wine and pudding with DP each evening. Definitely noticed my moods have been a bit more unpredictable and I am positive that is the sugar. Having said that, it is also my TOTM.

Have now worn TWO dresses in a size small. I’m definitely not, but it was a lovely feeling!

ponygirlcurtis · 31/07/2018 08:38

Morning everyone, hello to the new people.

My cream tea yesterday was lovely - cakes weren't too big, just small bites really, which was perfect. But I do feel bloated and a bit gurgly today. Lots of water I think.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 31/07/2018 09:23

13.8.2 today!

To be honest, weight loss or not this just feels like the healthy thing to do for our bodies.

Morning everyone - and welcome newbies. Fantastic support here which really helps. Some great losses have been reported so well done all!

So just checking in from holiday. Have mostly stuck to BSD friendly options - with red wine and some dark chocolate thrown in. Family are in full on fish and chips / ice cream mode but it hasn’t bothered me. So I am pleased I feel somewhat in control. Start of week 7 for me next Sunday and I’ve decided i’ll have a weigh in then continue to properly monitor progress for another 5 weeks. On the whole I’m surprised I’m not finding it difficult so I’m really hoping I can continue. Good luck with the rest of the week all Smile

Snowglobes · 31/07/2018 11:01

I’ve not posted for ages as I’ve not been very good. Haven’t weighed a thing or planned. Even had wine most nights this week BUT this am weighed myself and have lost 6lbs this week!! So lowest ever. Have lost the 3lb I put on on holidays plus an extra 3. No idea how as I really don’t deserve to! I’ve been skipping breakfast and avoiding obvious carbs but that usually makes little difference. Maybe my first whoosh? I’ve never lost 6lb in one week before! Totally shocked. Happily! So now 10.10.6 and size 14.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 31/07/2018 11:31

Wow Snow! Brilliant work. I long to see 10 on the scales but haven't since I was 14 so not holding out too much hope.

onanothertrain · 31/07/2018 20:02

I've been away with work to somewhere it might be possible to be low carb or vegetarian but not together.
Tried to be as good as possible and avoid obvious carbs though had to resort to a panini today. It wasn't even that nice. Back on it tomorrow!
