Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

I am going in to week 6 now. Had a big event Saturday night so lots of non plan booze featured! Resulting hangover meant yesterday I had to have some non plan carbs but wasn't really a bad day and still came in at about 1300 cals so I will take that!

Need another good week as we have a trip to Ascot on Saturday followed by another party in the evening so it won't be a great weekend diet wise.

I do then have 2 clear weeks for last of the 8 weeks so hoping any damage I have done over a couole of weekends can be remedied with a final push to the finish line!

Need to do a food shop and do some meal planning today... this thread is helpful for providing inspiration!

Good luck everyone :)

ChocEggNoThanks · 09/07/2018 10:55

Thanks for the salad link Lally! Some good ones there must screenshot a few.

Lallypopstick · 09/07/2018 16:16

I really, really want something chocolatey today. Talk me down!

Oblomov18 · 09/07/2018 16:17

Loving the sound of all this bacon and courgetti.
I finally weighed and have maintained. Probably because of wine consumption over the World Cup period. So at least I haven't put on! This is good. I'm going to seriously have to reduce if I want to lose though......

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/07/2018 16:53

Lally don’t do it!!!! I regretted my chocolate binge hugely this morning! Think how much better you’ll feel if you don’t.

Hi Oblomov!

OP posts:
Polpette · 09/07/2018 18:24

Lally could you try some 80 or 90% dark chocolate instead? It's really good melted over strawberries and left to set hard in the fridge.

I'm starting on week 6, but despite not wavering from the plan my plateau persists...I thought it was on the move but alas not. I'll keep going though, determined not to give in.

Oblomov18 · 09/07/2018 19:46

Hey Bear Grin

Lallypopstick · 09/07/2018 20:13

Thank you for the virtual support. I managed to resist but with my period on its way, maybe I'll have to allow some very dark chocolate into my plan.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/07/2018 20:46

Closing the kitchen on 1090 cals, 49g carbs. 23k steps, 5.5km run. A little bit over the calories but that’s ok. It’s a good start to the week!

Lally I feel your pain, that was ms over the weekend. I wasn’t disciplined enough to choose dark chocolate; I scarfed a load of horrible oily Cadbury’s and it wasn’t worth it. Hope you feel better tomorrow!

Hi lally, personally i can't live without chocolate Grin so i have a couple of squares of 70% lindt or green and blacks most evenings. I just make sure I have enough calories for it (about 125). It hasn't appeared to impact my weight loss and i think it has helped me stick to plan knowing i can have that small treat in fhe evening.

Hope you feel better tomorrow

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/07/2018 08:54

Morning everyone. Much cooler here today, I do love the sun but it’s nice to feel a bit fresher. Ds off school poorly after being sick in the night, not so good!

I’ve planned out my meals/ shake for today and should come in at 850/49g carbs, and I’ve got my run done already (5.5km). I’m really enjoying my early morning runs although I don’t go as fast or as far as if I run later in the day as my bones are creaky because I’m getting old

So- day 2 underway, off to a good start.

I've had a wierd breakfast: 'using up what was in the fridge' meal. Avocado was nice.

Chicken with curried lentils and tenderstem broccoli. I think my head's back in the game but I have really struggle over the last few days.

PrimalLass · 10/07/2018 18:01

That looks amazing. Think I'm having omelette. On hols tomorrow so everything is a bit frantic.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 10/07/2018 18:38

I want to eat everything. What is wrong with me? I'm so fed up of working really hard then undoing it all.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/07/2018 19:36

Finishing the day on 1200 cals, 52g carbs, 17k steps (5.5km run) - calories higher than ideal but not horrific and I have had lots of protein today which does bump the calories up. It’s still ok though. I think my biggest issue this last few weeks has been that 800 cals just isn’t enough for me long term, so my body rebels.

Menu planned for tomorrow- going to have a fishy day so tuna salad for lunch, then a fish platter with salmon, calamari and prawns for dinner. Really excited about that one!!

Amazing it’s hard isn’t it? For me, and I had exactly the same last week, it’s not about hunger- it’s about all the other reasons I eat. Hormones, stress, tiredness, emotions. No amount of food solves those things, but I never remember this until after the event!

OP posts:
TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 10/07/2018 19:45

I think I will reread never binge again. It really helped.

Oblomov18 · 11/07/2018 07:19

Never binge again?
Is it good?

Snowglobes · 11/07/2018 11:33

Hi everyone! Just checking in whilst on holidays. I drank a lot of fizz on the flight but didn’t eat the potatoes. Am eating b’fasts that I normally skip but they’re tending to be omelettes. Having several beers a day & yesterday also had wine with dinner. The drinking options are my downfall as there’s lots of cocktail offerings and I’m figuring a cold beer maybe better. There’s no diet drinks just full fat coke/sprite. So I’m thinking if I’m going to have a fat drink it may as well be alcoholic 🙄 Maybe I should go with fruit smoothies as at least they’ll be more nutritious than a beer! There’s just something really good about alcohol! At our second place today so will try to source some diet drinks. The great news is I’m looking ok ish in a bikini and my shorts are loose. Just need to be careful with drinks!! Drinking is definitely my issue - more so than food. Having an amazing holiday though!

AvonCallingBarksdale · 11/07/2018 11:41

Sounds great, Snowglobes where are you. I was contemplating a bikini but just don’t think I can and will compromise (again) with a tankini Grin

thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/07/2018 20:50

Avon I didn’t think I could and then everyone on here encouraged me, i say go for it!! I got a high waisted bottoms and top and it holds everything in in the right places.

Closing the kitchen on 1100 cals, 82g carbs (because I ate 2 profiteroles!), 24k steps (6 km run and hours of gardening!). I am itching to get on the scales, I know I’ve had 3 good days now and basically I get antsy to weigh myself, but no. I promised myself I’d not weigh in til the 18th!!

Food has been good today, we had a fish day so tuna salad, and then Chinese veg with salmon, prawns and a few calamari rings. Very tasty! Another busy day tomorrow, I’ve been making a rockery garden so more lugging rocks, weeding and sweeping.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 12/07/2018 10:17

Week 7 here (with a few weeks less strict than is ideal Hmm ). Anyway, weighed this morning and am 14lbs down since the start of this 8 week stint. Holiday in 4 weeks so would like to drop another 7lbs, ideally more. I think running 3X a week is helping too.

veryveryquietly · 12/07/2018 10:31

ugh, such a disastrous week. At a conference for work, where everything comes on bread or in a crust. Or is some version of fried potato. Just had hardboiled eggs and spinach at a Caffe Nero and lord it is bland. So having a fruit yogurt as well, and hoping that'll get me past the sad lunch offerings. Last night I got back to my room so hungry I caved and ate the mini-packet of bourbons supplied by the hotel. Not worth it, as they tasted of sugar and nothing.

I cannot wait to get home and get my life back on track after (now) 3 weeks of travel, work events, and such.

My fat is squishy, but doesn't seem like it's going anywhere, alas...

ChocEggNoThanks · 12/07/2018 10:43

We are home but full on with visitors so still in holiday mode. Did well yesterday then ate about 500 cals worth of ice cream at 10pm! However my 3lb holiday weight gain has shifted and am back to pre-holiday weight. Going to have a couple of decent days before another round of eating out.

On the upside people are noticing weight loss especially friends I haven't seen for a while.

Snowglobes · 12/07/2018 13:07

Avoided the beers yesterday but went to a sugar cane mill and drank the ‘water’ that we pressed.... and some rum. Also had a few evening cocktails. Oh and a couple of tortilla with plantain and cassava! Very carby. Have to get involved in the culture though! We’re kayaking down the rivers this morning and then doing a walk this afternoon so that may burn off a tiny bit. Very worried I’m putting on lbs everyday. Really missing the scales!!!
