Blood Sugar Diet thread 11

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Have a lovely holiday Snow!

Hope everyone has a good day!

PrimalLass · 07/07/2018 16:53

I've been pretty good the last few days, so have forced off 5lb of wheat and heat bloat. Had a Pimms Cider last night - not at all worth the calories.

4 days and counting until bikinigate.

B: boiled eggs
L: strawberries and cream 🙄
D: chicken salad

Coffee with milk, mini twister, probably a g&t

PrimalLass · 07/07/2018 16:54

Snowglobes have a fab holiday. We are emptying the food too - which has just saved me as I wanted some crisps and there are none. I'm refusing to buy anything.

FlightyMare · 07/07/2018 19:30

Hello again. So my glucose monitor arrived and I tested my fasting levels this morning. Came out right in the middle of normal at 4.5, but DH was borderline 'at risk' with 5.5 so he's going to join me. I'm still unhappy about my large waist size and am hopeful this will tackle it.

We go on holiday in 2 weeks, so I'm planning on sticking to the 800 cals for that time and hopefully shrinking my belly down a bit before then. Officially starting on Monday (of course!) as we're out for the day tomorrow including lunch, and I also have a bag of maltesers to finish first too!! Grin

I'll be back on Monday...

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/07/2018 20:34

Closing the kitchen today on tdee it there abouts. So not ideal. But still only 49g carbs. I’ve done 23k steps which includes a 12km run.

Back on the straight and narrow tomorrow. I think I’ll end up on a maintain this week as I did actually have a pretty good start, but the last few days have been over. Next week is the optimum week for weight loss in my cycle so I am going to really focus to get the most out of it.

Gah, had full on carb melt down last night. After kitchen closed, which you can see happened and I was already at tdee, so god only knows how many calories I ate in the end.

I know the culprit too- bloody Dh and his wretched kp dry roasted peanuts. Every effing week he buys a huge family sized bag of them, never any BSD friendly snacks for me incidentally, and then every week I end up eating them. Quick scan of the label reveals they contain MSG which explains why I then can’t stop, and also why I then end up scouting around for food like a stray dog. It’s not his fault yeah it is but I just feel like it’s a hurdle at the end of every week which when combined with a few drinks, feeling tired, socialising, I just don’t have the energy to fight it sometimes.

So, I’ve banned them. They are not allowed in my house (or if they are I must not see them). Grin

I'm back. Have just weighed myself and despite eating nothing but junk some rather poor choices over the last few days I have only put on 1.8lb. Went to carnival yesterday with work and did 17k steps most of which were dancing in the parade in 30 degree heat. Was fun but exhausting.

Back on it today, starting with some serious meal planning and batch cooking. Off to buy some little plastic boxes when the shops open and will try to have at least 8 'ready meals' made by the end of the day.

I think I slipped into eating the same things every lunch time and got bored. Add stress and voila - binge city. My mini target is to get 2lb off by Friday. Then start next 8 week block on Monday 16th. My body feels like it is repairing itself after decades of abuse. The fat all feels somehow looser - that means it's ready to go, right?

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 08/07/2018 07:44

Bear - a peanut ban seems like a really good idea. The only biscuits allowed in our house are custard creams which I hate. Even at my most desperate I wouldn't view them as a binge worthy food!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 08/07/2018 08:07

Amazing that’s just it, I would have to be pretty desperate to binge on biscuits or toast these days, but somehow I’d managed to convince myself that a few KP nuts were ok. It’s not the nuts per se, it’s the monosodium glucomate in it that just switches on the appetite. Horrible stuff, I try to avoid it but that one had slipped through the net!

I think as well because I ran a long way yesterday, my body is fighting me at the moment over fuel. I am definitely stuck at this weight, not as in a plateau (where I’m doing it properly but not losing) but as in my body is fighting to drag/keep my weight at this level and does this by increasing appetite. I’d imagine, although not sure, that as body fat % drops, it causes an appetite increasing hormone to rise, forcing appetite up, to replenish fat stores. I’m sure I’ve read this somewhere.

My ‘eat more protein’ plan worked quite well last week, but then had been scuppered somewhat by my pmt hormones. This should hopefully have calmed a bit this week.

For me it was Cadburys buttons ice cream last night. Annoying.

PrimalLass · 08/07/2018 08:59

Yes I think so. I saw it described as jiggly puff.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 08/07/2018 09:01

Yes I can relate to that. My stomach went all ‘liquidy’ under the skin and then literally I saw it melt away over about a week. It was very strange.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 08/07/2018 09:31

Wow, just read those links Primal! My upper arms are definitely squishy, so really hoping that will disappear soon!

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 08/07/2018 10:30

Drumroll please........

I've just got back from the gym!

Feeling incredibly smug and energised. Only did treadmill and still can't run for much more than two minutes at a time but very pleased. Definitely can do more than last time I went. Only downside was the man who got on elliptical directly next to my treadmill in a virtually empty gym. He also smelt unpleasant, made sex noises when he worked out and didn't wipe down the machine after. Yuck.

PrimalLass · 08/07/2018 12:20

Well done on the gym!

My stomach has gone really cellulitey. Just in time for a bikini. Hope it melts away a bit by Wednesday.

veryveryquietly · 08/07/2018 12:41

Bad weekend here -- guests so have overindulged in wine, chocolate, and almonds. About to make a healthy proteiny lunch to try to counter bad behaviour. At least the scale number continues to be stable.

On a countdown till the easing of some significant work stress - by next Saturday life should be much more relaxed, and me with it. Hoping I can relaunch 850 cals a day (rather than current slapdash counting) and regular gym visits. But I simply can't manage it this week, and am not surprised last week went haywire.

ponygirlcurtis · 08/07/2018 13:45

Well done Amazing! I have managed to get to the gym twice now and it's good to see how quickly it increases my fitness levels.

I am off on holiday tomorrow, no access to scales. I will try to keep a handle on it but not too tightly. Although I saw a new number on the scales today - I won't see it again for a while I don't think but just knowing it's possible is very heartening.

Lallypopstick · 08/07/2018 15:16

Squeezing all my fat bits now to see if they're soft!

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 08/07/2018 15:27

I did that too!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 08/07/2018 18:18

Me too. My thighs are definitely very squishy/liquidy (although this may be because I’m simply not on plan right now)

I’m having the period from hell which is typical in this glorious weather. Tired, grouchy, bloated and carb crazy. Niiiiiiiice! Today bought a family sized bar of Cadbury’s, ate half, put the rest in the freezer. But now it’s talking to me, so I’ll need to throw it out. But I cannot quite bring myself to, even though it’s making me miserable. I need a decent nights sleep and a fresh start tomorrow.

I’ve hidden the scales. Planned my food out, although it’s not my meals that are the problem tbh. Just made a lovely salad, really nice. Dc had ice cream, I had berries and creme fraiche. Then when clearing up, went and ate a white bread roll!! Why am I doing this to myself!!??

My plan this week is to just get my head back on the plan. Running at 6 most mornings to avoid the heat. Try to get to bed earlier. Eggs for breakfasts, salad lunches, salad dinner- really worked well for me last week. Lots of water and trying to keep busy and out of the sun!

FlightyMare · 08/07/2018 19:48

Amazing can I please ask what meals you've prepped as 'ready meals'? I'm a very reluctant cook and looking for the simplest meal options possible. Bear's eggs and salad plan sounds doable for me too actually, especially when it's so hot.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 08/07/2018 21:37

I just do things like chilli with lots of veg in and then add some grated cheese when I have it. Chicken and butterbean stew. Curry with chick peas or sweet potato in it. Bolognese good - I put raw courgetti with it when I warm it up at work and it cooks as the sauce heats. I was planning a courgette lasagne but it's too hot to cook so I have been sitting in front of the air conditioning unit (we have it from our previous business!). If you really hate cooking some of the slimming world ready meals would work well with this. They've got no rubbish in at all and you can just add veg/salad. Aldi have an imitation range too.

Don't put pressure on yourself to cook if you don't enjoy it. Have some cold chicken and salad from packets etc

Seasidedreamer · 08/07/2018 22:40

Not a bad weekend for me but some red wine, a little chocolate and a slice of DD’s leftover pizza have all featured since Friday night. Was more restrained than I usually am though and have banned Rose and white wine from the fridge. Otherwise it’s salads, eggs and chicken. The last thing I want to do is have the oven on!

Will be interesting to see how I get on while away this week. Very impressed by all the exercise some of you are doing - particularly the running. I’m not a runner but am going to try and up the walking. Wishing everyone a successful week ahead!

Lallypopstick · 08/07/2018 22:50

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/3300916-help-me-make-tasty-salad this thread is inspiring me for lunches. I said a few days ago that I was looking for new lunch ideas so I'm glad to have lots of different things to try.

DandelionAndBedrock · 09/07/2018 05:40

I hope everyone is set up for a good week ahead.

I have had an overall loss of 0.2lb last week which is frustrating, because I was down to my healthy weight for the first time ever yesterday. I’ve been fluctuating by about half a pound/plateauing for the last week - it feels like my body isn’t ready to stop being overweight yet. I hope once it realises it doesn’t have a choice I’ll start to see losses again.
