Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Totally in awe of people who are able to keep off the scales Shock. It’s like all my willpower goes on food, and I have none left to avoid weighing daily.

That said, I am now 1lb away from my (top end) official ‘healthy weight’ on the BMI calculator. I am feeling loose and flabby today so crossing my fingers for a whoosh soon. DP has started having breakfast with me and he has already gone down a size in his trousers Hmm, despite having pizza and drinking beer on a regular basis!

Lallypopstick · 05/07/2018 05:13

Seaside we started at similar times I think and I'm also not weighing. I measured and I have a pair of (two sizes too small) trousers I'm trying on every week and taking photos. Realistically I probably have 4 stone to lose so I think I'll try and continue with this way of eating after the first 8 weeks, maybe with a break in between.

I love hearing about what everyone is eating and the losses they've add. I'm thinking Christmas will be when I'm happy with my weight - I hope. I've got such an awful stomach post baby and while the stretch marks won't go, hopefully the overhang will.

Polpette · 05/07/2018 08:11

Huge respect to all of you non-weighers. I started at the same time as Hovis and have lost roughly the same amount. However, I weigh daily, lost a lot within 3 weeks then plateaued so have been stressing about the lack of weight loss rather than just being delighted with the overall number.

Despite knowing this I can't stop my morning weigh in! I have downloaded Happy Scales now though so that stops me stressing (a bit).

thenewaveragebear1983 · 05/07/2018 08:31

I flirt between daily weighing, and then hiding the scales. I am usually more focussed and more able to make good choices if I’m not weighing daily; for me a good weigh in can sometimes be a free pass or a ‘let off’ for my misdemeanours. Plus, it’s very satisfying to see the weight coming off in pounds rather than grams! A personal trainer once told me to ‘weigh your food not yourself’ and that sort of stuck with me- I lose more if I track my food than if I jump on the scales every day.

All that being said, I have weighed in this morning at 10.6.8 which is about half a pound above my lowest ever weight. 6.9lb from target. Can’t remember what I weighed on Monday so not sure if I’ve lost this week, but I know I’m working hard and have been good; I’m due on next week so that might skew my results this week.

Have a great day y’all

I weigh daily and I prefer it, keeps me focused and means that I rein things in if I see it going up a bit. Will be strange not weighing all next week when we are on holiday!

Picnic lunch at the park today - made a crustless quiche last night so will take some of that and bung some salad on top.

Freudian I think Michael mostly advocates daily or at least regular weigh ins, I suppose because it’s very motivating to see a loss every day. I’ve also had periods of time where I’ve not calorie counted but followed the plan ‘rules’ and I’ve still had a regular weightloss. My only tips would be to keep up the healthy BSD habits as well as the food: so not snacking/grazing, lots of veg, not too much fruit, and lots of water. It’s doing these things that keep me on track (I lost 2lb doing this on holiday, I allowed myself unlimited BSD food at mealtimes only but no snacks)

That should say ‘Michael Moseley’ not Michael mostly l, makes it sound like me and the big MM are on first name terms....

I do get that the losses seen from regular weigh ins are very motivating and previously this is what I’ve done. But I do have years of failed diets behind me too so I was hoping to treat this regime a little differently and see if it made any difference. Although I need to lose at least a couple of stone I actually just want to feel good in a slim pair of jeans and t shirt!

Food wise, I have been having a couple of dark rye ryvitas with longley farm cottage cheese when I crave something crunchy. M and S chargrilled chicken nourish bowls are great when out and about, fairly low carb and 243 cals - they seem more. Cod loin with a dollop of full fat philly wrapped in parma ham has been a good option although I don’t feel like turning the oven on in this weather. Prawn masala, tarka Dahl or prawn Bhuba have been good with cauliflower rice have been good too. I buy the Asda frozen cauliflower rice and then roast it in a non stick tray - I prefer it to steaming. I am away for 5 days next week so will be sticking to principles rather than counting so I have my fingers crossed I can stick to it!

ChocEggNoThanks · 05/07/2018 17:17

Hello all just a check in. Yesterday wasn't great but better today bar some salted peanuts. Ferocious heat which helps! No scales so not weighing but think I have some water retention. Need to drink more water!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 05/07/2018 18:27

I’ve gone over on calories today but it was a necessary over spend/ damage limitation. It’s nearly totm, I’ve reached my limit of this hot weather (actually, I’ve reached the limit of my children in this hot weather) so I needed something cheesy and stodgy. So: peas, ribboned courgette, dollop of Creme fraiche, spoon of pesto, generous grating of Parmesan and some prawns. It was like seafood risotto, really gloopy and calorie laden and yummy.

Other than that I’ve had a really good day; eggs for breakfast, fried with a bit of black pepper; lunch was salad with cold meat. No snacking or mindless nibbling. Ran 5.5 km up steep hills this morning. If I wasn’t due on I’d be expecting a reasonable loss this week, but that’s not likely due to the usual water retention, but I think if I can get through the next few days BSD friendly, then it will show next week. (Hopefully) I’ve loved my streamlined menu this week, particularly knowing that there’s something in the budget for breakfast if I want it- i haven’t always had it but it’s good to know I can if I want it.

Tomorrow I have lunch with my friend, at the Harvester- so plenty salad, and probably a chicken breast, then we have steak and salad for dinner.

Struggling today. Also nearly totm for me so I suspect that's why. Took a will of iron to not eat the pitta i did for the toddler at lunchtime!

have some calories saved for some darl chocolate tonight so hoping that will help!

veryveryquietly · 05/07/2018 19:52

Probably over on calories today, but have stuck to BSD-approved food and did acres of walking so going a little over shouldn't be too bad. Tandoori salmon for dinner, plus some sag paneer, with no rice and only two bites of peshwari naan, so not too bad. Haven't had naan in months so did want a taste, but fortunately a taste turned out to be plenty sufficient.

Scale has made slight movement down over last few days, nothing huge but contining progress is great. Just glad to see it moving again!

bear your pasta-not-pasta courgette ribbons w/ prawns and peas and cheese sounds excellent. Hmm, and I just so happen to have all that in the refrigerator, so I know what I'll be making this weekend.

Hoviscats · 05/07/2018 20:21

I have just had a similarly courgette based dinner which was amazing. Fried bacon lardons, mushrooms and garlic with creme fraiche to make a sauce and then courgetti added to warm through in the sauce at the end, parmesan grated on top. Was just what I needed and only 300 cals :)

thenewaveragebear1983 · 05/07/2018 20:23

Hovis yours sounds amazing too. Think I’m going to be trying a few variations!

Have woken in a rubbish pmt induced mood desperate to eat as much sugar as possible Hmm. I am determined not to give in but today is going to be harrrrrd.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/07/2018 09:34

Me too hovis, has a rubbish night with Ds having bad dreams, and was up at 6 in a rotten mood!!

oh no bear :(

I am trying hard to snap out of it. Just done a quick town dash with the toddler and bought some nice deli bits in waitrose to try and curb the cravings! Hoping to drown them out with protein... we will see!

Hope you feel better

ChocEggNoThanks · 06/07/2018 10:42

Urgh. I think we've all synched on TOTM on this thread! Usually things start to improve from here on - usually fewer carb cravings! Here's hoping. Attempting to have a better day today ended up having too many snacks which added up to more cals than meals. I don't mind indulging on holiday - that's what they are for - but I want to relish each snack not just gobble it down!

All the courgetti recipes sound great. I am really missing my cauli rice of all things!

ChocEggNoThanks · 06/07/2018 14:32

A good BSD lunch today - provolone cheese and grilled veg. Delicious and low carb! It helps that I am the driver so just drinking sparkling water rather than lovely Cava!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/07/2018 16:19

I went to lunch with my friend, all good intentions- we went to the harvester so I had two big bowls of salad (only the veg stuff, not the pasta/Cous cous /bread), then had two starters instead of a main (calamari and chicken strips) which removed the sides/fries issue. Then only went and had an ice cream sundae!! Daren’t look on their website to see the damage! I could kick myself, but hey. it wasn’t even nice really.

Went to the shops afterwards as I have a rare childfree day- bought some trainers as my bday gift from Dh, plus bought a lovely jersey dress in a size 8 (woo hoo!) as a little treat, although I really do have to stop buying clothes now, there’s not enough days in the week to wear them all!

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 06/07/2018 18:11

I have eaten monumental amounts if crap for the last few days. I have also got a second extra period 10 days after the last one. Yay. Fucking ridiculous me. I've just eaten 2 jam doughnuts for my tea.

Snowglobes · 06/07/2018 22:51

Oh amazing never mind but no more doughnuts today and start again tomorrow. Hopefully they at least tasted good and not like bear’s sundae. It’s so annoying when you don’t even enjoy it!
I’ve been emptying the fridge as we go on hols in the morning for 2 weeks. Have been relatively BSD (bar a few glasses of wine last night) but not weighed anything for ages or entered in to MFP. My plan for the holiday is to try to be BSD only foods, minimal snacks, minimal alcohol, lots of water and a bit of exercise. Not sure how BSD friendly the food will be as the most dishes seem to be based around beans and rice with plantain etc. I certainly don’t expect to lose but would be delighted if I maintained!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/07/2018 09:13

Morning everyone.

I have a headache this morning probably from gin drinking and sugar consumption. However, I’ve come on this morning so that should subside the hormonal eating and hopefully shift some water retention over the next few days. I’m showing as 10.6 (which is a pound down) and I have had quite a reasonable week so that’s ok.

Just been for my long run for the weekend (12km) which gets that out of the way! Nothing really planned for the day, Dh going to watch the football but I’m staying here with the dc so nothing to tempt me.

Have a great day!
