Blood Sugar Diet thread 11

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Bear that was me during breastfeeding - "it'll be fine to eat all this chocolate, I'm breastfeeding."

Then back to work and nothing fits!

Hope everyone has the day they've planned today. I'm coming to the end of week 2 and think I'm doing ok so far. A couple of social events coming up but I've checked menus to see what I can have that's low carb even if it's not exactly low calorie.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 28/06/2018 07:30

14 stone 0.8 pounds this morning! Happy bunny!

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 28/06/2018 07:32

Sorry that won't mean anything to anyone else. But it means I have 1.4 lb to go to be back at my lowest.

Snowglobes · 28/06/2018 07:33

Ah choc it’s so difficult at the mo. It’s constant planning and a lot of blooming effort. It’s important to be social and have a life but that really does scupper the plan doesn’t it? Every weekend I gain even when I’m super careful!
amazing I’m not surprised as you’ve had amazing results. Your lollies sound lovely bear but I’ve never heard of peanut butter powder! Could you use real peanut butter? Definitely buy the high waist bikinis now. Don’t wait! You’ll get on holiday, look around, see larger but confident women and wonder what you were worried about! I do it every time!

AvonCallingBarksdale · 28/06/2018 07:41

6 weeks till holiday exactly so I need to be ON IT!! Dragged myself out of bed at 6.30 after a very fitful night in the heat to go for a short sharp 2.5K run. Berries and yoghurt with pumpkin seeds for breakfast, courgette and halloumi skewers for lunch and veggie frittata for dinner and poss a G&T during the footy. Have a good day everyone.

Snowglobes · 28/06/2018 07:42

Maybe that’s going to be our version of the 5:2 maintenance plan - weekend gain - 5 days to take it off again.
In the tune of ‘polly put the kettle on’
Weekends put the weight on,
Weekends put the weight on,
We’ll all have crisps & wine
We’ll all have crisps & wine
5 days take it off again
5 days take it off again
We’ll all maintain
We’ll all maintain

ChocEggNoThanks · 28/06/2018 07:49

Snow I'm going to be singing that all day now Smile I am tired of hovering around the same weight. I know this is a set point roughly so it will take focus to get past it but I just don't have the focus at the minute. And life is too short to decline all treats! So Bear the ice cream was worth it!

Oblomov18 · 28/06/2018 08:32

Snow that's really funny! Grin
Bear, buy the bikini 👙 now!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/06/2018 09:09

Loving your lyrics snow!

Ok, you’ve convinced me. I shall bikini shop today.

The peanut butter powder is a compromise as if I buy jars of PB I literally eat it from the jar with a spoon, I cannot be trusted. But I do like it in shakes, and in recipes so the powdered version prevents me scoffing it all. It’s a lot less calories too per spoonful.

Weighed in this morning at 10.7 which is at the bottom of my yo-yo range. I have had successful weekends where I haven’t regained all my week’s weightloss and I find the key to it is to maintain those healthy habits so: weighing and tracking food, no snacks, exercising, avoid the big 5 carbs, but just allow myself to eat as much BSD food as I need at mealtimes only. This is what I did on holiday and lost 2lb. It means Monday morning is starting from a much better position ready to lose again, rather than re-lose. There’s a bit of unproven wisdom that says that ‘new’ weight is easier to lose, but I find that losing and re-losing the same 4-5lb can be very detrimental overall both to mindset and actual physical weigh loss. It’s like my body ‘remembers’ that we gain 4lb at weekends, and cranks up my appetite to fulfill it’s goal.

Started this morning with a lovely crisp 5km at 6am, so much nicer to run in the cool air, and I’m definitely doing that again tomorrow. I used my interval timer to do 45 second sprint/15 second jog intervals for 30 minutes to try and increase my overall speed.

Love the song snow .

Happy bikini shopping bear. I'm so impressed with your running. You've made it part of your life. Well done! Flowers

DH's meeting over-ran yesterday so we didn't have time to go for dinner after all. Instead I had a tiny shortbread and G&T at the event. They had no slimline tonic Confused but since it was a meal replacement, I figured it was ok to have fat tonic. Grin

Snowglobes · 28/06/2018 11:13

Oh place I’m Loving the idea of a G&T as a meal replacement. Grin

APlaceAtTheBSDTable · 28/06/2018 11:24

snow in this weather I would happily replace meals with G&Ts . . .perhaps I should write a diet book. G&T with lemon for breakfast; plum and vanilla G&T for lunch; blood orange G&T for dinner Grin

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/06/2018 17:03

Ordered it. From TU at Sainsbury’s online (after trying all the usuals, M&S, Debenhams etc and getting so frustrated with either tops and bottoms all out of stock) so went for plain black high waisted bottoms and a palm leaf top and bottoms, thinking I can mix and match. I have not worn a bikini in years (since my honeymoon but I wasn’t comfy in it); maybe ten years since I’ve really enjoyed wearing one, so we’ll see. But thanks all for your encouragement, I would never have done that if it wasn’t for you. Delivery is Saturday so fingers crossed it fits!

Having a frozen portion of chilli tonight with loads of veggies and Parmesan, I went out for an impromptu tapas with my Ds today, so had a rather calorific lunch and have also had a slice of cheese and some cherry toms this afternoon. But hey, I’m feeling good today.

I was discussing with my friend about ‘fat days’ as we both have them, but they are largely very little to do with actually gaining weight and are so much to do with mind set and mentality. If only there was a simple thought process I could make myself do each morning to change from that ‘fat day’ feeling into something more positive; by this time yesterday I’d given up and written the day off, today I’m totally different. Weird isn’t it?

There will be wine tonight though, as the football is on!

Hoviscats · 28/06/2018 19:16

Struggling a bit today. I just really want a large glass of wine and something bready/cakey.

Managing to stay on track but DH is out and I just cant be arsed to think of something to cook so i have just had a mushroom, spinach and parmesan omelette which was nice but not the pizza which i would rather be eating Hmm

I have decided after saturdays first weigh in (and 4 weeks in), I am going to give myself 24 hours 'off plan'. I think I need a day not thinking too much about it, without going mad, but being able to just have a slice of toast or something guilt free! Will then get back totally on it for the next 4 weeks.

Very jealous of your wine average. I also have the football on but sadly only with water to accompany it! Btw I bet the bikinis will be fab!

APlaceAtTheBSDTable · 28/06/2018 20:30

Hovis I could have written your post. I am desperate for pizza. . .It's odd because every other sunny day, I've only wanted salad. Today, I would kill for pizza or pasta.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 28/06/2018 20:39

I have to have root canal surgery tomorrow morning. I'm worried because I'll have to eat beforehand and I won't be able to eat for a while after. I'm too reliant on my routine. But I know from previous experience I'll get very lightheaded if I haven't had any breakfast. So I'm assuming I'll just go badly wrong all day.

Hoviscats · 28/06/2018 20:47

amazing that sounds horrible :( Go easy on yourself and just eat whatver you can i would think!

place i know, no idea why but pizza and cake feature heavily in todays food fantasies despite the heat! I am at an event Saturday night with a pizza oven so maybe thats why!

Polpette · 29/06/2018 07:45

Good luck with the root canal surgery Amazing.

I've definitely hit a week four mini plateau, have stuck to the plan to the letter but absolutely nothing is moving this week (in fact I've gone up a pound), not even my measurements have moved. This is probably the downside to daily weighing!

I'm hoping desperately that there will be a whoosh soon and in the meantime I'm focusing on any non scale victories - skin is clearer, jawline is defined, I have more energy.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 29/06/2018 08:09

I'm annoyed with myself - as soon as I decided last night that I would have a day off today I started eating like I was possessed. WTF is wrong with me??? Although I have logged it all this morning and it was still only 1700 cals. Scales have gone up and I feel like I've got a hangover. Why am I so cruel to my body?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 29/06/2018 08:36

Me too. I ate bread last night and had stomach cramp all evening. I think it’s the combination of rubbish sleep, dehydration, and general meh feeling because of the heat.

OP posts:
TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 29/06/2018 09:16

Grim isn't it? I'm in the waiting room at the dental hospital and it's about 1000 degrees. I forgot to have breakfast and I will probably faint. I'm hoping they do the root canal while I'm passed out. I'm so thirsty too. Also forgot my head phones so can't listen to The Archers. Not feeling valm or prepared.

ChocEggNoThanks · 29/06/2018 10:57

Still on a plateau here which is more than I deserve frankly, I must be sweating it off! I've been hoovering crisps down as fast as I can grab them. But I need to keep checking in here to keep me honest! Going to aim for no more than 4lbs gain over the next fortnight on holiday. Still going to try to avoid the big five but it's hard to avoid them as a veggie abroad. Veggie options always seem to be pizza or pasta 😯 We usually eat Chinese or Indian food too so I might just have the main with salad or veg instead of rice. Going to stock up on nuts, avocado, hummus and cheese so I can eat before we go out if necessary.

ChocEggNoThanks · 29/06/2018 11:00

Also I am still obese by BMI but only by 4lbs. I would love to 'just' be officially overweight instead of obese 😁

APlaceAtTheBSDTable · 29/06/2018 11:07

Choc you'll get there. I had slipped into the obese BMI when I started this two years ago but ended up in healthy BMI. Currently I'm fluctuating in and out of healthy - and tbh that's because I've been rubbish at BSD since Jan.

After quite a good day yesterday, I ended up eating ice cream at 2am. Blush It's too hot to sleep. I've tried fans, open windows, etc.

Amazing sending you happy, calm thoughts Flowers

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 29/06/2018 11:37

It was surprisingly ok. No feeling in my cheek or right side of tongue. Couldn't be finished in one go so back in a few weeks.

Am not going back to work despite feeling like I probably could but might pop out for lunch with H if I get enough sensation back. Will be Nando's salad if I do!
