Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

That’s good amazing, I think root canal has a bad reputation but must people I know who’ve had it done have said it’s not too bad.

I am enjoying a glorious child free afternoon. Can’t remember the last time I had a few hours without Ds. Just had a salad, a coffee and a mini magnum! Not exactly BSD friendly! Out tonight for cocktails and tapas with my friends which I’m really looking forward to, so today might be a write off. Like choc I’m maintaining despite my not exactly following the plan so remind me of this week when I am angelic and lose nothing and complain.

Just been to really excellent local charity shop and got loads of absolute bargains, Shorts, dresses and running kit all for £1 each, and many of them in size 8!!

I have just bought a pair of linen trousers in the sale at Sainsbury's. They were £7.50 and a rather optimistic size 14. They fit. Disclaimer - I am not a size 14 but by god it feels good.

Today I have eaten a Nandos chicken salad and a huge punnet of ice cold cherries. 76 calories left but I'm pretty full!

APlaceAtTheBSDTable · 29/06/2018 21:10

bear congrats on all the size 8's! Star
amazing glad the root canal wasn't too painful and you were able to go for lunch.
I've been out all day in the sunshine. I walked lots (which means I probably won't be able to walk at all tomorrow!) but didn't have access to any BSD food so ended up eating a burger.

veryveryquietly · 30/06/2018 07:01

Still catching up with thread, but quick belated suggestion for polpette:

Agree with ponygirl about the two bras thing, but also, as someone with 'vast tracts of land' as the Monty Python thing goes, only sports bra I've ever had that really worked is by Elomi, this one. It comes in lots of different colours and you can get online from Debenhams or once you know your size, you can often get them cheaper on ebay. Which is good because it is not cheap. But when I have it on, the girls stay put, which is priceless.

veryveryquietly · 30/06/2018 07:27

Hi all - back from family visit and work trip, both of them beset by massive transport chaos. Chaos so bad I did end up have a few biscuits and too. much. wine. But amazingly, neither lost nor gained over the 10 days of no exercise and eating BSD compliant but still too much. I will take that as a win. And I did notice that I don't need to eat nearly as much as I used to feel full.

Also managed to buy a few new clothing items (including more good gymwear Halo) and very pleasantly surprised to be into smaller sizes than expected. (Uh oh, this could get expensive...) Family and friends also very complimentary about weight loss, which was really gratifying.

But very glad to be back and going to dive back in for another strict 8-week cycle -- I've been maintaining over last month of work insanity and travel, but need to get back to losing so need to kickstart. So have meal-planned for next week, ordered groceries, and started logging/tracking again.

Really impressed by everyone's progress here - wow how great. Go us!

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 30/06/2018 07:57

Back down to my lowest - took me all week to lose the weight I gained while camping but I did it. Hopefully I'll keep going onwards and downwards!

Hoviscats · 30/06/2018 08:30

So it is just shy of 4 weeks for me (day 27!) and I have just done my first weigh in since starting... 16lb lost! Really really pleased with that Smile.

I would love to lost another stone but would be happy with 10lb over the next 4 weeks.

This thread and all the brilliant losses and advice has really helped me so thank you all so much!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 30/06/2018 08:32

Morning everyone, great losses and triumphant maintains!! Well done.

I’ve had a rubbish week, culminating in yesterday which I always knew was a planned day off as I was going out. The place we went was a newly opened restaurant and it was awful; frozen food, no veg (?), poor service. Left feeling very cheesed off and so came home and at toast and drank wine into the small hours with Dh. Feeling it today, plus the impact of a week-long carb binge. I wish today wasn’t Saturday as I’ll now have to be extra careful all day. I have started well though, an 8km run with a few punishing hills thrown in. Wondering whether to weigh myself and face the music!

OP posts:
veryveryquietly · 30/06/2018 09:00

oh no bear! That's really awful when you set aside time and money (and calories!) for a treat and it turns out awful. Congrats on getting the hilly run in though, that's excellent and hopefully burned off some of the frustration!

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 30/06/2018 09:57

I would say yes, weigh yourself. I think when we're honest with ourselves we do better. Feel free to ignore that though!

APlaceAtTheBSDTable · 30/06/2018 11:20

I was going to agree with Amazing about weighing yourself bear but then I realised I hadn't taken my own advice this morning so I'll just sit here quietly Blush

ChocEggNoThanks · 30/06/2018 14:26

Still on a plateau but am wearing my shortest denim shorts and they are not cutting off my circulation! But all I've had today is 2 cups of coffee and instead of being loose at the waist shorts are now visibly tighter. Interesting experiment in water retention.

DH is now bringing home McDonald's before anyone thinks I'm being too virtuous Blush I have just realised that I am in the mad carb crave stage of cycle and am on damage control rather than denial. Doing lots of cleaning at least so burning a few calories!

Enjoy the sunshine everyone 🌞

thenewaveragebear1983 · 30/06/2018 16:01

I did weigh in, a couple on, which to be fair I deserve this week. Avocado and bacon for breakfast, salad and feta and tuna for lunch. But after a stressful morning putting up a shelf (no joke, it’s taken 3 hours and it’s still not done and there’s another one to do) I’m pretty much ready to kill someone. The kids have moaned constantly all day because they’re tired from the hot nights, and quite frankly I’m feeling really pissed off and angry. So I’ve just poured a small glass of rose and spritzed it with lemonade.

I’m at the stage of my cycle where I get tetchy and feel fat and miserable, usually it’s about half way through for a couple of days, but it does lead me to comfort eat and drink! So damage limitation for me too I think!

OP posts:
TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 30/06/2018 16:14

I've been thinking lots about how I manipulate situations so I can overeat. It's upsetting but I think I need to go through it to get better.

The hardest bit is the realisation that I often treat the kids so I can have something too. Essentially I've been feeding them utter rubbish so I can get my food high. I hope I haven't fucked up their relationship with food forever. We're definitely all eating better when I do this though!

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 30/06/2018 18:29

Today's supper - beef and butternut squash chilli with grated cheese and avocado.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 30/06/2018 18:59

Delicious! We’ve just had bun-less burgers and salad, but I did have an ice lolly to follow.

Tomorrow. Tomorrow is a good day to start over...,

OP posts:
ChocEggNoThanks · 30/06/2018 19:13

Bear hang in there. Sounds like you earned the wine!

Shrink recognising the patterns is half the battle. We're all doing the best we can (as parents as well as on BSD so be kind to yourself ❤)

I have been guzzling iced decaf coffee all day. It's amazingly filling. Half good after the lunch fiasco- half bad as I was planning a weird and wonderful dinner of fridge stuff that needs used up before we go on holiday. Cheese and Brussel sprouts anyone?!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 30/06/2018 19:35

Mmmm cheese and sprouts is yummy, but maybe not on a 30* summer day! If you have any bacon to add to it, it’s especially nice.

OP posts:
thenewaveragebear1983 · 30/06/2018 19:40

And yeah choc, I’ve just lost the plot totally and I don’t even care. I think it’s the beginning of sun stroke/heat exhaustion! I have say in the garden in my new bikini, natch and read my book all afternoon, and I think I’m going to fully indulge my every whim tonight as I’ve already written the week off. This is not something I’d recommend, but I just feel like I need it today. We all get like it sometimes I suppose and the reality is that there’s only so much damage that can be done in one night. The real damage for me is in my head/mindset and that’s where I’m struggling right now!

OP posts:
Polpette · 30/06/2018 21:13

Thanks so much for the recommendation veryveryquietly - looks like I may be able to get my vast tracts of land under control after all.

Congratulations Hovis that's a brilliant loss!

Lallypopstick · 30/06/2018 21:22

Beef and butternut squash looks delicious Amazing - is it one from the BSD recipe book?

I ate a lot today but I'm justifying it to myself as it was all the right foods. Went out for a 3 course lunch (thank god for cheese as a 3rd course) and that's all I've eaten today. Must admit I was so tempted by bread and chips and dessert but my head is in a pretty good place. Two weeks completed tomorrow.

Well done Hovis on your loss. I hope I can do similar.

Been thinking about the diet today and I bet there's lots of "naturally" skinny people who probably eat in a similar way all the time. I was a terrible snacker and I definitely don't see the thin people I know snacking between meals - at least not often. I really hope snacking is a habit I can keep at bay when I get to maintenance.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 30/06/2018 22:19

It's another one I made up. I'm not very good at following recipes because I always think I know better

HopefulAnnie · 30/06/2018 22:49

Hi all!

Joining this thread and starting the BSD tomorrow. I am 5'7 and 16 st 😐 I need to lose around 4.5 stone to be at a healthy BMI weight but that seems so far away. I am taking things a lb at a time.

From reading through the threads most people seem to find success through delaying the first meal as much as they can. 800 calories scares me but wasting my life obese scares me even more.

Snowglobes · 30/06/2018 23:42

Hello hopeful. I think there’s a bit of a mix regarding having b’fast or not having breakfast. I don’t as I find it easier to split the 800cals between lunch & dinner (& my 2 coffees first thing). I’m not usually hungry til midday anyway so this timing works for me. There’ll be just as many though who find they prefer a b’fast. It’s orobably worth mixing it up a bit and seeing how it goes for you.

veryveryquietly · 01/07/2018 00:23

Hi Hopeful - it is scary getting started and, fair warning, the first week or so can be pretty awful, but once you get into the groove it gets better and easier. I started this much bigger than you, but it has really worked well for me so far (2 8-week cycles with a month in between, and some lazy BSDing for 6 weeks or so).

I often do end up eating breakfast now, but when being stricter, I did find if I could manage to delay eating in the mornings to keep a smaller window of daily eating (say from 11 am - 7 pm), that worked better for me. I also found that if I was able to resist the initial hunger early in the morning (usually by having my coffee), it then wore off and I was ok until late morning.

As snowglobes says, there are some who are pro-breakfast so it comes down to what works for you.

I also found that for my sanity's sake, I did better with a daily calorie target of 850. For some reason that extra 50 made it possible to get by each day, which is what I needed to keep going.

Congrats on getting started! You can do this!
