Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Thanks for the double-bra tip Ponygirl I'll have to give that a go. Mad that nobody makes a decent sports bra for the large of nork.

Hovis I'm also on week four, am gutted that I was half a pound away from a full stone only to get on the scales this morning to discover I've gone up by 2lb. I've been averaging 800 to 900 a day without fail so I'm going to have faith all will be well.

I've downloaded Happy Scales in an attempt to ward off scale fluctuation fear.

Hoviscats · 26/06/2018 07:55

nearly a stone is great polpette! I havent weighed myself at all so going to do it on Saturday which is technically a day early but I am out Saturday night at a lpng standing social event so will have a couple of drinks so wanr to weigh in first! I am hoping for a stone or thereabouts. Fingers crossed!

I also have been really strict and only gone significantly over on 2 days. Both under 1200 cals though (and due solely to wine!). So hoping its doable!

Polpette · 26/06/2018 08:32

You must have a will of iron Hovis! I weigh myself daily, I couldn't stand the suspense of not knowing - I'm impressed with your resolve.

Isn't it funny that nowadays 1,200 calories feels like a huge blow out day of eating and yet on traditional diets that's the goal.

Hoviscats · 26/06/2018 08:59

ha ha I know I am not sure how I am doing it but I know that last time I lost weight (pre kids) I didnt weigh myself at all and it seemed to help! I do think for maintenance regular weighing is important though so once i am closer to goal i will start.

yes when i felt guilty about the 1200 days (despite planning them and still avoiding bread, pasta, etc) I had to remind myself that just a couple of months ago I could have considered them 'good' days Grin

PrimalLass · 26/06/2018 12:30

Sneaking back in with two weeks to go to my holiday. Have upped the motivation by trying on my bikinis.

I had a great first few weeks on this diet then slid into naughtiness b cause of bank holidays and general busy weeks. Hope I can get another two good weeks in.

I'm grumpy and out of sorts today but am on 400cals and 25g carbs so am on track from a BSD pov.

ATurnipOfMyOwn · 26/06/2018 18:28

Oops - fat fingers!

Where was I? Oh yes, wine and bloody tortilla chips that OH bought home for the England match. I had been avoiding the scales as a result.

However, on Sunday I weighed in (after some meticulous scale-placing) at 9st 13.5lb - so 18.5lbs down in 7 weeks. It was such a boost to see the number 9! I had originally hoped to be down a full 2 stone at the end of 8 weeks, but have scuppered myself with booze, so will be very strict with myself this week, but can't see 8.5lbs disappearing in the next 7 days. Presumably it's OK to just carry on for an extra week or two?

I'm very bloated today for some reason - I actually look pregnant!

ATurnipOfMyOwn · 26/06/2018 18:29

Sorry - no idea what's going on there! Thought I'd posted halfway through a sentence. Never mind, you get the gist.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 26/06/2018 18:42

Turnip it’s ok to carry on, but not indefinitely at 800 calories. Eventually you’ll need to increase the calories at least some days each week.

The vegetarian burger was okay- nothing amazing but perfectly tasty, nice with salad. The fish tails were weird- texture of chicken, tasted like prawn....maybe would be nicer cooked rather than cold? The downside of my lunch was that it was relatively carby compared to my usual and I have been a bit ‘picky’ all day. Just had my dinner which was delicious- salmon fillet, broccoli stalks and mange tout stir fried in ginger/garlic and teriyaki. And some strawberries and yoghurt. I had a piece of cheese and some pork scratchings earlier (I know, I am proper classy) which has pushed my cals up to 1100 and 49g carbs. 15l steps including a very hot run on the treadmill of 5km. So that’s ok provided I don’t do any evening munching!

Glorious day here, it’s so beautiful. I would kill for a glass of ice cold rose right now....!!

Snowglobes · 27/06/2018 06:26

turnip I’ve been doing this for around 11 weeks and think others are more than 8 weeks too. Because of various blips and the learning process my goal hasn’t quite been reached. Having said that I have now lost 10% of initial body weight and if I was diabetic or ore diabetic perhaps my blood sugars would have changed too. However, I’m only just in the band of a healthy bmi so I’m keen to keep going until I’ve reached a better bmi (ie in the centre of the healthy band). I’m not ready to maintain just yet. I’m not sure what the book says about getting to 8 weeks and not quite loosing the required amount.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 27/06/2018 06:59

He sort of doesn’t. He mentions a 5:2 approach to lose the remaining weight, and bring blood sugars down for people who are T2 and still have raised blood sugars after 8 weeks. But as a diet for non diabetics, there is very little guidance really. With regards to T2 it is both explicitly and implicitly stated that if you return to eating lots of carbs then your T2 will return (as it’s technically in remission, not gone, anyway), and my years of doing this have led me to believe/know that this is true for weightloss too. This is why we long termers rattle on about maintenance so much because there is not much in the way of a plan..

To lose the rest and go forward, you’ve a few options, and combinations you can do: have a break and then do another 8 full weeks; continue 5:2 med style with a few fasting days thrown in, keeping the carbs low most of the time; increase calories and/or carbs so each day you just have say 1200 and continue until you’re at your goal. Until you try it’s hard to know what will work for you. I pretty much do 5:2 (by accident) to maintain, but if I want to continue losing, like this week, then I’ll do strict calorie counts on some days. Unfortunately, while I do think I’ll reintroduce some carbs, they will always be to the detriment of my weight loss and can still only ever be occasional treats.

OP posts:
Oblomov18 · 27/06/2018 07:31

Yes as Bear says maintenance is hard, because MM doesn't quite give enough info/guidance in it.

Saying that, although I have maintained, that was never my intention, because after the first 8weeks, I was still way off the weight I was supposed to be.

But today I weighed. Am 2 lbs down, so atleast that's something. Since house renovations, and lost scales, I weighed in April, not in May AT ALL Shock
And twice in June.

I'll keep trying......

thenewaveragebear1983 · 27/06/2018 07:46

Oblomov 2lbs is great when you consider the stress of no kitchen and everything you’ve had the last few months.

There's a separate Facebook group for maintenance, but you can only ask to join after doing the first 8 weeks.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 27/06/2018 13:10

What’s the Facebook group called Primal ? Ta.

ponygirlcurtis · 27/06/2018 13:16

I am hoping to maintain for a bit - our summer holidays start tomorrow and there is no point kidding myself that I will keep to it, especially with no booze. Plus I want to get back into some exercise. My plan is to eat the same kind of stuff but be less rigid.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 27/06/2018 14:36

I’ve just made myself some ice lollies with almond milk, fruit, peanut butter powder and a bit of cream. 52 cals each, 3G carbs, but zero sugar and hopefully something nice as a treat in the evenings.

I’ve just found myself in the fridge, picking again so have come outside with a coffee to get as far away from the kitchen as I can! It’s those stolen bits that tip my day from an 800 to a 1200 so I really need to train myself not to do it.

On the plus side though, just been to the sale at our local Sainsbury’s (I love TU clothes) and treated myself to a really nice pencil skirt with a bright tile print and s pair of very slim fitted chinos- would have bought more but a lot of the 10’s I tried on were actually too big (hurrah!) and they didn’t have smaller sizes. I am toying with the idea of one of these high waisted bikini things which are everywhere, for our summer holiday. I just can’t quite be brave enough yet though. I might convince myself if I lose a few more pounds, although then there’ll be nothing left in the shops to choose from!

Goodness it is so warm here! All I want to do is eat salads and drink lots.
I have a night out tonight which I'm pretty sure will involve gin . . . and may involve a meal too.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 27/06/2018 16:13

3lb of the weekend weight gone! Very pleased with that. Had a mini binge last night and got a nice surprise on the scales this morning. I definitely feel thinner today - helpful because it's wrong trousers day at work tomorrow and I'm wearing my pyjama trousers. I bloody hate dressing up but it's definitely easier when you're a bit slimmer.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 27/06/2018 20:44

I cracked. I had some delicious wall’s soft scoop ice cream with chocolate sauce. It was amazing. Sorry

I did weigh it though. I had exactly 100g which is 190 cals, so actually not too horrific. But had taken my daily total from an almost angelic 1000 to a bit too high 1250. Oh well.....

The heat is getting to me now, or rather, not me, but the children. They are foul. The forecast is for 26-28 degrees for the next week! I don’t know how we’ll cope! I’m struggling to get my runs in because it’s too hot, so I’m setting the alarm for 6 tomorrow to go out first thing.

ChocEggNoThanks · 27/06/2018 22:09

I have pretty much lost the plot. Too many picnic dinners with crisps (my downfall), not enough drinks. This week would have been week ten but I'm heading for rapid gain. I just can't be arsed to be honest. It's too hot and everyone is being sociable. Need to get my head back into it all.
