Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Hello everyone, happy weekend! Haven't managed to keep up with the thread this week as it's been a tough one and as a result I have had a few days of more like 1,300 cals than 800 - not disastrous but not what I planned.

However I am obviously having a whoosh week - last week I reached my interim target of 10st 10lbs and set a new one of 10st 7lbs. This morning I was 10st 6.5lbs! So bloody chuffed, that's just 1.5lbs short of a stone off in 6 weeks. I don't think it will stick over the weekend as I am off out for curry and alcohol with a friend today. But I have seen it and I know that a few days of BSD will bring it back. Happy days!

AvonCallingBarksdale · 23/06/2018 11:03

Morning all. Good start to the weekend in that I did my first Parkrun for 6 years, now waiting in results. Had nuts and seeds with Greek yoghurt in the cafe after and a fizzy water so not too bad until I realised I’d snaffled a couple of dates, which I remember MM says are the devils own food ShockGrin.

DandelionAndBedrock · 23/06/2018 14:43

I’m having friends round tonight - making breadsticks and might treat myself to one or two...don’t want to spoil a good week but they look so good.

DP cancelled his plans to “help” me today - I hadn’t eaten all day at that point and snapped at him for getting in the way and being a martyr. He took himself off and bought me a packet of smoked salmon which I have just inhaled all of Blush.

Lallypopstick · 23/06/2018 15:52

Hi everyone,

Love to hear about how well people are doing who are ahead of me. And also feel reassured by the blips too - for me I know I need to be honest with myself if I go over the amount of calories and plan better the next day.

My NSV today (don't know if it counts) is getting a chicken and bacon salad in McDonalds which is 183 calories. I was a bit tempted by the fries but didn't even have one.

Planning chicken with broccoli and asparagus for tea. This is day 6 for me.

Anyone who is interested in picking up their exercise or starting completely from scratch, I have just downloaded a brilliant app- it’s a training timer for hiit or interval training. I spent a few minutes setting my intervals (so I did 45 sec/15 sec x 30, but you can do any length/ number of reps . Then I just set up a few exercises in the garden (jog, step, skipping rope, mat for press ups and sit ups, hand weights etc) and just did 30 mins of interval training doing each activity for 45 sec with 15 sec rests. Really good fun, the dc did it with me! It would ideal for anyone starting out jogging, you can do run/walk and the beeps play over your own music. I’m definitely going to use it next time I go running. It’s called Interval timer HIIT workouts.

Freudianslurp as long as you really savoured those cream cakes that's what matter. Hope getting back on the wagon wasn't too hard.

Newaveragebear I'm so impressed you've managed what you have with exercise. Interesting that you say it's stalled your weight loss at times though - did you feel more toned though despite the scales not moving?

I think I'm going to opt for doing Shred, my boobs are too big for running! Once I'm back to a decent fitness level I've decided to try out kettlebells.

Weekends are the most tempting times for me, am keeping busy to try and distract myself. An extra long dog walk did the trick this morning.

Polpette · 23/06/2018 19:33

Congratulations on the whoosh Ponygirl - it's so reassuring to hear that they really do happen as plateaus are when I start to lose heart.

Enjoy the breadsticks Dandelion!

Polpette definitely! I have had weeks where I have literally shrunk, visibly. That’s not an exaggeration! Considering I’ve dithered around for pretty much 6/8 weeks now and have lost virtually nothing in that time, I have probably dropped a dress size. I’ve lost 2 cup sizes in 8 weeks too. It’s funny too because while I’d like to lose the last bit obviously, running has really made me tune in to my body in a way I never have before and it’s a really positive thing for me (and my mental health) to not think about numbers on the scales so much.

Bear in mind I’m 6 Months In now and thinking about maintenance and lifestyle going forward, so not losing or gaining is a good thing. I need to kick my arse into gear a touch though because I have found it very hard this week to get back onto it properly and just ate a bread roll while waiting for my dinner to cook, which isn’t great BSD behaviour!

Well done ponygirl that's fab.

I'm officially at my lowest weight since July 2016 Grin

Hoviscats · 24/06/2018 07:38

Morning everyone :) Great news on all the losses!

average I am going to get back to proper regular exercise this week (about to start week 4). I put it off for a bit as felt like I needed to get to grips with the food element so aside from a fair amoint of walking I haven't run or done anything more strenuous. Think i am going to combone running with some shred and see how I go.

I decided to have a couole of glasses of wine Friday when we went out with friends and despite only having 2/3 of a bottle I had the worst hangover yesterday. Clearly my tolerance has been hugely reduced!

BBQ today but already got it all in mfp to make sure I can plan around it to keep to my 800 cals.

Hope everyone has got sunshine to enjoy today!

ponygirlcurtis · 24/06/2018 08:49

Wow fish that's brilliant!

Polpette I am large of nork and I run (not for ages mind). I wear two sports bras - a cheapy racer type from Asda and an expensive (but old) Shock absorber. Works pretty well.

bear that was my experience when I started upping my exercise a few years ago. Very little weight loss but lots of shape change. I am hoping to get back to it this summer as I am out of the habit.

As predicted I am back up a couple of lbs this morning but I am still under my initial goal so that's fine. 😊 I have roughly logged all my alcohol and curry calories and it's not too disastrous - around 1,500 cals for the day. I only had a spoonful of rice and a quarter of the paratha - even so I felt really bloated after it and still do today. Back to it today.

Enjoy your BBQ Hovis, we have sunshine too.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/06/2018 08:51

Morning all.

I’ve been having a proper think about my week ahead. I’ve lost the plot a little bit the last few weeks, and have been floundering. It’s been mentioned before but I definitely find when my head comes off plan all my healthy BSD habits go out of the window, so this week it’s time for strict week. For me that means: weighing and tracking every single thing I eat. That’s the single biggest thing I can do to keep myself on the straight and narrow because it stops my denial of what I’m actually eating. Periodically I dip into the boot camp thread and on there they don’t count calories, they trust their appetite. Well, I can’t do this. The last few weeks I have maintained (just about) but I have eaten so much food! To lose, I need to count.

So, I’m not doing a weekend or Monday weigh in. I know it will be a maintain or small gain, so I’m going to forgive myself and move on. I’m going to weigh all my food instead and be honest with myself. I’ll aim for 800-1000 cals as I’m planning a few runs and circuits during the week, but will actively try and keep the carbs low too which is something I never really do (I usually just avoid the big white carbs and trust it will be ok!)

No plans this week, quiet few days with Ds which helps as it’s going to be a scorcher. Out on Friday night for tapas (which is v BSD friendly) and cocktails (which is not so much, although I always choose ones without juice and I ask for them to leave out any sugar syrup)

OP posts:
thefishwhocouldwish · 24/06/2018 09:45

bear hope your plan for the weeks works out well. I'm sure the folks on here can help keep your motivation going.

After getting up twice in the small hours, being woken by stomach cramps and having to rush to the bathroom, I am down a further pound. There is definitely NOTHING left in my intestines! I have some food intolerances so definitely something I ate yesterday didn't like me.

My BMI has gone down 3, and although I was always in the healthy weight range, I look a gazillion times better now and my size 8s fit easily again (many of my size 10s didn't fit when I started 8 weeks ago). Being able to come on here and learn from you all and support each other has definitely helped, so Flowers for the lot of you. 18lbs in 8 weeks!

Snowglobes · 24/06/2018 09:52

Gorgeous sunny morning here! I’m quite surprised how the weight is coming off. I’m now 10.12!!! So I think that’s 20lbs in around 11 weeks! I think that’s incredible. Still a size 14 but look sooooo much better. Had the ‘skinny cottage pie’ from the recipe book last night and oh my it was delicious! I’d told the kids it’s was cauli instead of mash but I don’t think they’d have actually known. No alcohol this weekend after my awful weekend last week and then Thursday night drunkenness. I’m like you hovis really cannot take my booze now. Going to have to be really careful. I’ve been saying since I started that I need to exercise now but still haven’t!

ChocEggNoThanks · 24/06/2018 09:58

I've had two insane days of carb munching. I don't know where it has come from but I need to draw a line under it too. I'm at a set point and I don't know if my body is just conspiring to keep me there but I don't think I'm realistically going to lose much more at the minute. So going to have one last well behaved week before our holiday and then just aim to maintain after that. I will need another round later on.

My downfall was the crisps on Friday. Crisps are my crack. 😞

Snowglobes · 24/06/2018 10:52

‘Chocegg’ another name change in order? I think you’ve got a good plan to be strict for another week then aim to maintain. I had 2 shocking weeks (eating) and drinking & putting on 4lbs. 2 weeks of being strict have got it off and a bit more. It’s a balancing act though. The minute I have a few vinos it’s downhill massively. Did you try the kale crisps or other suggestions? Probably not as convenient though when you have the munchies! Can you not buy them in?

Back from camping. Although I made no real attempt to stick to the plan I am definitely making better choices. Also did quite a few steps e.g. frisbee on the beach. I'll weigh in tomorrow and 'fess up on here. Off to unload the car and then read through thread, meal plan and quick visit to Aldi.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/06/2018 14:52

Freudian if you have a little blender and some olive oil/butter you can whizz the herbs up with the oil, freeze in ice cube trays, and then you can just add one to your cooking, or melt on a steak etc as you need it.

All my running buddies have cried off gone up the pub to drink beer in the sunshine so I am going to go out by myself for my run before dinner. It’s really warm here but there is a pleasant breeze so hopefully won’t be too scorching! Dinner is gammon, Parsley sauce and veg but might have to rethink the veg for salad.

Eating a Mediterranean platter from Tesco and drinking coffee with cream to try and stave off the carb cravings. Desperate times, desperate measures!

DandelionAndBedrock · 24/06/2018 15:03

Glad everyone is enjoying the sun. Only out on half a pound after last night, which I’m pleased with. Had a frustrating shopping trip today - my shape has changed and I can’t get my head around what I should be buying instead of my old clothes. Good wardrobe clear out earlier tough - not going to go back.

Came home and nibbled all the apricots (and the pastry...) off the leftover tart from last night...oops.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 24/06/2018 16:36

Right, all caught up! Some great tips and lots of inspiration on this thread (as always).

I can't seem to focus enough to make a plan. Very very tired (dog in the next tent barked from 4am Angry) and just feel a bit disconnected. Think I will look back through mfp and recreate some of the good days. I had a delicious salad from Waitrose for lunch- chick peas and chicken with a lemon and yoghurt dressing. 270 cals - I wish I lived near Waitrose. I could happily eat two of those a day for 8 weeks.

My original goal was 2 stone by 14th July. Not looking too likely but not impossible either! Will cycle to work 3 times this week plus a walk with a friend on Wednesday evening. 3 weeks to lose 12 lbs plus whatever I've put on while camping...

Snowglobes · 24/06/2018 21:34

dandelion post a headless shot and maybe we can help? Or maybe over in ‘style & beauty’? What had you been wearing? I had a good shopping experience today for the first time in a long time! Holiday shorts that fit! Yeah!
bear your tip re freezing herbs is gold!! I’m always binning them!
Amazing a goal of 2 stones in 8 weeks was a rate of 3.5lb a week - pretty incredible. Is 4lb a week over the next 3 weeks a bit of a tough goal though? I’m hoping you’re not going to give yourself a hard time if you don’t achieve it!
IDEAS PLS We are going to a party next week and I need to take a plate of finger food (no utensils) any ideas for a few things that’ll be BSD and low calorie then at least I can just eat my own stuff? Thanks!
Happy weighing in tomorrow!
