Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

I second Jillian Michaels as being really good. I have a few of her DVDs and you notice a difference so quickly. Not that I've done any exercise since having my baby! But small steps.

Hope today goes well for you averagebear - planning definitely seems to be key. This is day 4 for me and I'm sure I'll have a bad day at some point but as the plan doesn't feel like extreme deprivation (nowhere near), it doesn't seem like it'll be hard to get back on track. She says, naively!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/06/2018 08:26

Thanks lally, I find if I don’t plan I seem to just eat quite mindlessly if I’m in that kind of mood. And the problem with BSD is that if you’re in a grazing mood, everything is very high calorie so a slice of cheese, handful of nuts, few spoons of yogurt = about 400 calories, and it’s not even a meal and doesn’t satisfy the munchies either. So hopefully by literally planning my 800 calories down to the last one means I can’t just put things in my mouth and add them up later.

Trying a new workout tonight, doing circuits at a local park. Never done them before, totally out of my comfort zone, and while I can pound the pavements running now, my muscular strength is pretty poor so this could be interesting!!

Well I am on day 4 of week 3 and feeling really good about it. Still not wrighed myself but I feel like my tummy has really got smaller and I havr put clothes on and really noticed the difference so I am quietly optimistic about weigh in results at the end of week 4 :)

average planning definitely helps doesnt it. I find putting in to mfp what i am planning to have for dinner really helps me the rest of the day. Especially if i know I fancy having a slightly more calorific dinner than usual.

I have stopped all snacking since starting and I definitely find that better for me. The other time I have successfully lost weight I also stopped snacking so guess it suits me to eat 3 meals rather than little and often.

This weekend we are out for drinks tomorrow night but I have decided to drive in order to make sure I can't write off the day on booze calories then Sunday we have friends over for a bbq but I am planning to make some really noce salads and fill up on those and some lean meat so shouldn't be too bad. Also I think I will just have the one main meal and a small breakfast and maybr a little snack before bed so I can consume most of my calories in bbq!

Hope everyone else's weeks are going well :)

Bear, I bought a 6 pack of popcorn from Sainsbury's. 'Salty and sweet', only because it was the lowest calories @ 77 calories for a rather big bag!!

But it was too sweet for me. I will continue to search for a more salty one.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 21/06/2018 15:07

Oblomov the Poshcorn salty one in the blue packet is nice.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 21/06/2018 15:10

Unfortunately I had to attend the Eid picnic at work today. Lots of parents made amazing food and I grabbed it from them they forced me to eat it. Pakora heaven.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/06/2018 19:12

Slightly better day today but still not brilliant. Followed my plan, but also still had the obligatory 2pm graze - slice of ham, piece of cheese, an apricot, some yogurt. It’s like my body is telling me I need an extra meal, except if I eat breakfast I still do it and do it worse. Not sure really how to tackle this. It’s always at that time and it’s definitely not hunger, it’s just food. Maybe stress (my darling Ds is the epitome of ‘terrible two’, the naughtiest boy I’ve ever known....) I don’t do this all the time though, so there must be other factors. Maybe I should keep a sleep/stress/hormone diary and track it

Off to circuits this evening. I cannot think of anything I’d rather do less. I’ve never attended a formal exercise class in my life and every high school
Nightmare is returning.

Tesco magazine (the freebie they give away) has a couple of nice recipes and a few that I will adapt, such as a chicken and Philadelphia fricasse, a nice dip with feta, and a tandoori traybake (which I would actually call a frittata). Also a recipe for pulled chicken, which I am definitely going to try but modify as it has a sticky glaze.

I’d almost reached a stone lost but have struggled with will power these last 2 days, I think buying dark chocolate was a mistake as it’s restsrted the sweet cravings. Live and learn!

chrispenrallt1 · 22/06/2018 05:42

On the way home sat at the airport, feeling virtuous as have eaten 2 boiled eggs and resisted the carby offerings at the cafe.
Who knows what they will offer on the plane, I’ve got two boiled eggs left but I do t think I want to be antisocial and scoff them on the plane.
My weigh in day is Monday so I will be back on the fast 800 diet A’s based on the book. I’ve have a great time, eaten mindfully and hope to keep this up when I finally arrive home sometime tonight!
Have a great weekend everybody
Shrinking I bet those pakoras tasted good!

Polpette · 22/06/2018 08:24

I've been lurking on the thread for awhile and have been really inspired by everyone's motivation and great results.

I'm just coming to the end of wk 3 and have lost 11lbs so far, determined to get to a stone by the end of the month.

I'm curious as to what goals you all set yourselves. I'm ignoring my main goal, it's just too daunting and far away, trying to pick small achievable ones. I should probably try and pick some non scale goals too. Has anyone got some good ones?

Am so surprised at how much energy I have and how natural this way of eating feels. My two indulgences are 90% dark chocolate and wild rice (not together!) which are pretty tame compared to how I ate before.

Snowglobes · 22/06/2018 08:28

Agh!! Nightmare evening as was hosting a drinks evening. Didn’t actually have that much to drink I don’t think but got quite tipsy and ate a ton of Doritos and a chocolate bottle thing!!! Aghhh! I really cannot hold my booze anymore and going to have to be super careful!!

chrispenrallt1 · 22/06/2018 08:53

Now at next airport, the muffins look fab, but it’s a salad for me!
God it’s a long day

Polpette, welcome! This is my 3rd round of BSD. 1st round I just wanted to shift some baby weight, 2nd I didn’t really do it properly and I dithered about for ages. This time, 3rd round and subsequent continuing (I’m coming up to 6 Months) my goal was to be skinny. I know that sounds ‘unhealthy’ or unrealistic, but I knew that I needed to aim high. I find if I set myself the goal to lose 1lb a week, I am happy with 1 a week, but I was aiming big! I didn’t have loads to lose (2.5 stones) so some people have lost that and more in much less time. I also aimed to run for 10 minutes a day (my actual average over the year is now 3.8km a day!) and I had certain items of clothing that I wanted to wear and used them as targets. I add half stone targets into Fitbit just for a bit of motivation, and my total overall weightloss is 2 stone so I’ve just added my last target half stone! It does help to have mini targets though so getting under a certain stone bracket, or dress size helps. Some days my target is just to stick to the plan!

Newbie!

So much great advice here thank you. My motivation is due to a diagnosis and so I need to shift some weight for an operation. Sorting out the cupboards and fridge this weekend to clear the way.

DandelionAndBedrock · 22/06/2018 16:31

polpette I find the apps that give you a weight loss graph really motivating. I also have a paper tracker in my diary where I colour in a square for every pound lost. I set myself an initial target of 2stone over 12 weeks, but decided to be happy with a stone and a half. This week (week 11) I hit 3 stone, and I have now lost 25% of my starting weight in September (attempted to diet by myself until starting BSD in april).

For me, though, the most motivating thing is reactions from other people. I know that sounds shallow, but when someone who sees you for 45 minutes a week in a gym class comments on how much you have lost, you know you’re on the right track.

DandelionAndBedrock · 22/06/2018 16:31

Welcome, swamp. Clearing the cupboards sounds good. I prepared to start by eating all of the carbs, which was a very fun week but not very sensible Blush.

4077swamp · 22/06/2018 16:51

Thanks D&B Hoping the hollow legged teenagers will deal with most of it. Then they are happy to join in with the new menu at home. (no doubt they will get their carb fix whilst out)

Hoviscats · 22/06/2018 17:27

dandelion that weightloss is amazing!

I was going to drive to my night our tonight to avoid drinking and therefore going over my 800 cals....but the sunshine and the peer pressure is starting to take its toll!

if i do drink it will only be the second time in 3 weeks so i kind of feel like its ok but i really dont want to screw it up. Decisions!!

Polpette · 22/06/2018 18:46

Freudianslurp good luck getting back on track tomorrow, I can understand your need to write today off.

Dandelion that is amazing weight loss! That must have taken a hell of a lot of resolve to achieve on that time. I like the idea of marking off each pound, I might give that a go.

Newaveragebear there's nothing wrong or unhealthy with aiming for skinny - I wish I was close enough to even consider that as a goal. Am impressed by you average daily run, I guess it goes to show how it's possible to build habits. That has reminded me that I need to start building in some exercise time.

Good luck Swamp, the first week seems absolutely endless but after that it gets a hell of a lot easier.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 22/06/2018 18:57

Nice one dandelion, excellent results

Polpette thanks. I was aiming to run 1000 km this year, I’ve now changed that to 1000 miles which means a daily average of 4.5km (I know, I can’t do imperials!). I had literally never exercised before January so it’s a phenomenal change for me. I will say though, the exercise is great for toning up, but I find running does not help my weightloss and there are days when I could literally gnaw my arm off with hunger. It’s forced me to be super strict at times, and at other times has really stalled my losses. I do find when I have these plateaus it’s usually because my body is changing shape and while I don’t lose, suddenly there will be a skinny bit I hadn’t had before.

Tonight we have salt and chilli pork belly slices, and lemon and herb pork steaks (both pre made from Asda!) with salad. I tackled my afternoon munchies head on today and arranged a play date for 1.30 so I was simply unable to eat during the danger time. It worked, and now I’m bloody starving.

OP posts:
ChocEggNoThanks · 22/06/2018 19:24

OMG. Today can just be recorded as 'The Day Choc Ate All The Things'. I may even name change.

I wish MFP had a 'catastrophic gluttony' entry. Plateaus are my enemy!

Morning everyone.

I’ve struggled this week, and haven’t quite stuck to plan actually, not at all!
I will have to be particularly focussed this weekend now. I can’t run today as the circuits training on Thursday has left me broken! So a nice chilled family day, salad lunch and probably steak for dinner is on the cards. All good.

Have a great Saturday!
