Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Snowglobes mini fritattas maybe? I used to make crustless mini quiches in silicon cups for work events as we had someone who couldn't eat gluten. Goats cheese is good as it's so strong for a small amount then a bit of cream / yoghurt with egg and some chives.

You could do a mackerel paté with crudités too. Or falafels though I've not attempted making them yet.

Lallypopstick · 24/06/2018 22:08

Oh and I love mozzarella balls, cherry tomatoes and basil on cocktail sticks too.

Still lurking have had a terrible week pre menstruatal and non planning had been disaster ! I’m away on holiday next week then back on it I’ve irdered the recipe book and am still strength training but food is awful

APlaceAtTheBSDTable · 25/06/2018 00:07

Hey everyone. It's been hectic here - parties; lunches; a festival; DC finished school; decorating, etc.
I have been avoiding the scales but can still fit into the summer clothes I bought last year so although I feel heavy, it's not pushed me up a size yet.
It's our family planning day tomorrow we have one at the start of every holiday period so I'll WI then.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 25/06/2018 07:41

Morning. I said I wasn’t going to weigh myself but obviously I did, and the last few weeks have definitely caught up with me! I’m up rather a lot, it can’t all be good but some of it is, plus I am stiff as a board after doing quite a lot of exercise this week so maybe some is water retention and muscle. But a lot is just gluttony. It just shows how delicate a balance is needed for this plan, because virtually everything I’ve eaten has been on plan (barring a bread roll) but still....

However, looking back: I’ve been eating more fruit than I used to; Dh insists on buying huge bags of dry roasted peanuts which constantly tempt me and I’ve definitely eaten some handfuls of those; plus other general plan ignorance! So this week I am totally on Strict Plan, back to basics. Going to shop differently this week, trying out a combo of a cheaper butcher and greengrocer which have just opened up near us. I went last week as the fruit and veg was really cheap so will try the meat as well this week. Then supermarket for the last few bits. It’s really hard shopping for 5 people, trying to get nice stuff but also not let the costs spiral.

Have a good week everyone!

Morning everyone.
I haven't weighed recently, haven't wanted to. But now my kitchen is basically finished, minus snagging list, (I've been using my oven, fridge, washing machine and NEW dishwasher - I've never had a dishwasher before -yes, really!! Shock)

So now, I'll get my scales and find the exact spot, the exact millimetre to regularly lay them - like most of you do, yes? Wink

Oblomov18 · 25/06/2018 10:39

Welcome newbies. Well done on the losses everyone.
And thanks Avon for the poshcom salty popcorn recommendation.

APlaceAtTheBSDTable · 25/06/2018 10:53

Happy new kitchen Oblomov . I remember the first time I had a dishwasher - it was a revelation! Enjoy! Flowers

I weighed in this morning. On the downside, I am heavier than I want to be. But, on the plus side, I'm only 2lbs more than I was at this time last year so hurrah to not having to buy new summer clothes again! I was going to just repeat my meal plans from last year but tbh I'm so much more sedentary this year that even if I followed them completely, I'd probably still put on weight! Hoping to get the GP to refer me to a consultant as my mobility is still limited even though it's been 5 months now since I fell.

Snowglobes · 25/06/2018 11:04

Great recommendations lally think I’ll do plates of each! There’s five of us so taking just one plate is a bit mean! I agree entirely with the balancing act bear. I think maintenance is going to be harder than losing because you really cannot EVER relax. I had a look at your HIIT timer thing and whilst looking up popped an app called 7 - basically a 7 minute a day training session. Even I can fit in 7 minutes. I think! Yeah!! oblomov new sparkly kitchen!!! There’s no excuses now though!! Wink

A few new things to try this week: these vegan burgers from Asda weee just 70p a pack, thought they were worth a try for lunches. They have 160 cals and 7g carbs each, not perfect, but might be good as a change?
And also these fish things, from the freezer section. Each one is only 20 cals,
I also bought a spray olive oil to try and save a few calories when cooking. Went to the butchers and got trays of meat which I now need to package up and freeze in meal size portions. Was tempted by their bbq offer (burgers, kebabs, wings etc) which I might go back for this weekend as it seemed to be a lot of meat for the money and a variety of seasonings and flavours.

Weighed in. Up to 14 stone 5.6lb with us a gain of 5.8lb in 4 days. May have to revise my lose two stone in 8 weeks target.

Snowglobes · 25/06/2018 18:26

King prawn flavour bear? What are they actually made of then? And why vegan burgers and not regular burgers? Are they better BSD? Just curious as don’t think you’re vegan.
Oh bummer amazing! BUT you’ve lost a LOT so don’t be too put off by this gain. I put on 4lbs recently (over a long weekend) and lost it by the end of the week. It’s a balancing act and it is easy to gain even when being ‘good’ but not calculating. I think about how much more I’d weigh if I kept having my usual long weekend foods/drinks and it’d be a lot more than a measly 5lb! You’ll have got rid of that in no time!! You are afterall THE Amazing Shrinking Woman!

Snowglobes · 25/06/2018 18:34

amazing just wondering if the ‘happy scale’ app would be helpful for you. I love it. It looks at your general loss and works out when you’ll hit your targets at that rate etc. You can put your weights in retrospectively.

Welcome to the snow globes show! Sorry! ‘’Happy Scale’ also plots a general graph that sort of makes blips not look so bad. The blue circles are my actual weigh ins but the line does a ‘best fit’ / general trend. I prefer this to the spiky up & down MFP graph.

Yeah snow I wondered about the king prawn flavour too! Think they’re a bit like crab sticks (which aren’t made of crab)?? Will report back. The vegan burgers are just beans and veg, so not because I particularly wanted vegan but because they are BSD compatible and relatively easy to just bung in the oven. I always just look for new things to try that fit the bill.,

Howdy y'all (as they say here), almost on my way back to the UK at last. Lovely to see family, and have managed to avoid almost all temptation, though have probably eaten my bodyweight in cheese and roasted almonds. But I faced a pizza last night and just ate a bit of the toppings, didn't have the lovely/horrible rich crust. Fortunately SIL has done low-carb before so did not take my food issues personally.

On the minus side, driving everywhere so not nearly enough exercise. On the plus side, driving everywhere so almost no alcohol. Hopefully these will cancel each other out and the scale numbers won't be too scary when I get back.

Have stocked up on jerky, mini-cheese, almonds and choc for the (long, 3-leg including long-haul) trip back, now just have to find some olives. Glad my advice was helpful chrisp ! I also felt much better not loading up on wine as usual on the flight - just a bit plus sparkling water. Was great - no hangover after landing.

Hope you all are enjoying the summery weather over there! I can't wait to get back.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 25/06/2018 18:58

Don't think Happy Scale is available on android. Think I've found something else similar though.

Ah sorry amazing hadn’t realised it wasn’t android compatible. Maybe freuds will work - I think a trend is much more motivating. It’ll be interesting to hear how they taste bear albeit no asda near us!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 25/06/2018 21:19

Kitchen closing after day 1 of strict club....
873 cals
36g carbs / 8g fibre
23k steps (including 9.5km run)

Plus, I have absolutely weighed every single morsel of food today, and drank loads of water. Every time I really focus on weighing food it makes me very aware of how lax I get about it and tends to really focus me. Pleased with that, a good start to the week!

Amazing it’s really difficult when away from home and camping as well. I think you did well not to put on more. I’m weighing in on a Tuesday now so we shall see what the travelling scales say.now I’m back home.
I often find that if you put a few lbs on quickly they often don’t have time to stick, so hopefully yours will come off quickly.
Bear you are quite right about the balancing act with the food. So easy to not weigh and plan and then it goes wrong.
I must say I do feel more energetic since I started this woe, onward and downward!
Well done to everyone who has lost and thanks to everyone for tips and hints
This thread is great!

Hoviscats · 25/06/2018 22:12

Good day here today NSV when i tried on 2 pairs of shorts that 3 weeks ago wouldnt do up and now do up with room to spare!

Stuck to 850 cals today and did a brisk 8 mile walk this evening so all in all feeling positive about the way week 3 has started Smile

Hoviscats · 25/06/2018 22:30

i mean week 4!

chrispenrallt1 · 26/06/2018 06:22

Another pound off! Think I will try those chinos on that I bought optimistically in the sale last year!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 26/06/2018 07:26

Down 3.5lb since yesterday, so that’s the water retention gone. Still a pound above my lowest recorded weight, so it’s going to be another 800 calorie day for me. Fast til lunchtime, then salad and one of those bean burgers and feta, then tonight we have ginger and soy salmon and green beans with spiralised broccoli stalk ‘noodles’.

As yesterday, lots of water during the day. Maybe a short treadmill run later, but nothing too dramatic, although I am walking a couple of miles to the post office with Ds before it gets too hot.
