Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Grrr. I resisted the Halo last night and had an under 800 cal day but I'm still 2lbs heavier this morning. Bloody hormones. I know it's my heavy TOTM but still. Grrr!

AvonCallingBarksdale · 20/06/2018 08:45

Last night’s dinner was a big tuna nicoise minus potatoes and minus my usual “fancy” bread. Was yummy and completely filling.

Looks lovely Avon, I always forget how nice tuna is until I see people eating it.

I’ve had a busy morning doing jobs. Lots of steps! Just had a shake, and made a quiche last night which I’ll have a wedge of later. Dinner is cod with some sort of pesto topping. I’m planning a short treadmill run of about 3km and then Jillian Michaels workout later as I’m really noticing my arms slimming down now and think I need to tone them up a bit!

Ooo Avon you have reminded me I have tuna, I was planning tomorrow and Friday's work lunches and really didn't fancy chicken again. 😊

I made the aubergine and lamb dish from the diet book last night (the one there is a picture of). I have made it before, minus pomegranate seeds, and it was lovely. Last night I added the pomegranate - omg it was amazing! And pomegranate seeds, where have you been all my life? Having them in yoghurt tomorrow (with my tuna!). Yummmmm.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 20/06/2018 17:12

I love a bit of tinned tuna Smile The lamb, aubergine and pomegranate is delicious. I’m lazy and buy packs of pomegranate seeds rather than a whole one Shock

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 20/06/2018 17:46

Gorgeous lunch (all day breakfast style - ham, boiled eggs, tomatoes and mushrooms) and I've dug out an old favourite recipe today- lentil and buckwheat slice. 175 cal and 28g carbs per wedge. Very filling and feels really carby and satisfying. Having it with cauliflower and broccoli cheese.

Currently sitting in a car park waiting to pick ds1 up from school camp. Hurry up coach I'm starving!!!!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/06/2018 17:55

Here’s my dinner tonight, it was absolutely delicious! Cod, pesto, pea purée.

I have grazed all day, I was getting annoyed with myself in the end. Plus all day I’ve been having carb-thoughts, like ooooh bread, ooooh ice cream, ooooh toast- managed to resist them but it was pretty much every time I saw or thought about food I had to talk myself out of eating it. There must be some correlation between the fact that I had only a few minutes deep sleep last night (according to Fitbit) and this constant sugar chasing which I have been doing all day.

Ok I now want to eat everything in the world. Totally emotional as am really full. Help.

Donteatthekidssweets · 20/06/2018 20:56

Hi, I posted on an earlier thread and I’ve been lurking ever since. 4 weeks in and I’ve lost 7lb but I’ve slowed to a snails pace. I’m finding the thread very helpful. Does anybody else use mfp? Do you just not check out as it won’t let you if you are under 1000 calories?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/06/2018 20:58

Freudian I keep buying the ingredients for falafel and then not making them. I bought some from Tesco a while ago and they were lovely (except had apricot jam inside!), maybe a tray bake is the way to go?!

Amazing I’m like that today. I want ALL THE FOOD - not carbs especially, just anything and lots of it. Found myself rooting around for forgotten goodies, and eventually decided that the only cure was a run, which I did then immediately started thinking about what I can eat! It’s bizarre isn’t it??!! Sometimes I wonder if it’s easier to just give in and have a tiny amount of sugary stuff rather than spend all evening trying to distract myself. Sorry, that’s not really helpful advice is it?

I decided to allow myself 1,500 calories today. Was totally satisfied by the time I got to 1,390. I had lots of small things - 25g of peanuts, small box of raisins, penguin biscuit, mini cheddars. It worked well as an emergency measure and meant I still felt in control. Hopefully the scales will be kind tomorrow. Did 10k steps and cycled to work today. Just felt fuzzy and weird all day. Bit headachy and strange and low.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 20/06/2018 21:33

It's so obvious that I raided the packed lunch supplies isn't it? Grin

ChocEggNoThanks · 20/06/2018 22:09

Closing at 856 cals. Lentil Bolognese for dinner with cauli rice, avocado, broccoli and 3 dark rye ryvita. Odd combo but yummy. May have an orange and some dark choc as think my iron is a bit low.

Snowglobes · 20/06/2018 23:28

dont eat I use MFP but don’t bother about ‘checking out’ and it still stores all the info. No idea what difference checking out would make.
chocegg is that dark chocolate with orange flavour or 2 separate items? Do oranges contain iron or is it the chocolate?
amazing you missed off pompom bears? So raided your kids snack box!
I had a tin of sardines in tomato sauce with a big bowl of salad for lunch (friend over for lunch who happily had the same). Had dinner very late. Sort of forgot then hungry at 9pm! Had my fave cottage cheese with pear and walnuts as couldn’t be bothered cooking and kids ate earlier. Just under 800 again today. Must remember to get some supplements - keep forgetting! I also need to tone bear - going to google your Jillian woman. Anyone else recommend an exercise thing to do at home pls? Couldn’t run!!

Hello all from holiday, well actually from airport lounge waiting for connecting flight. Operation Pack BSD Snacks for Long Haul worked well: I took a small bag of roasted almonds, some mini-cheeses, a small pack of nice biltong/stript beef snacks, some single packs of nice olives (the Olove brand is good), and a bit of dark chocolate. Didn't count calories at all, but my treats were infinitely tastier (and more filling) than the stodge fest that was offered on the plane.

Let's hope I survive a week in the land of Supersizing your combo and 'would you like fries with that'.

Donteatthekidssweets · 21/06/2018 04:25

snow thanks that’s what I’ll do. Checking out gives you a predicted weight in 5 weeks time and I find it satisfying but as I am never that weight I’m sure I can manage without it Grin. I’ve had a good day today so fingers crossed for the morning.

chrispenrallt1 · 21/06/2018 04:44

I’m flying home tomorrow and thanks to very very quietly I’ve got a good Idea of things to take on the plane that won’t be too bad. As I leave here at 5 am I’m taking some boiled eggs to eat before I get on the plane, but there is never a healthy option on board. I’ve got a 3 hour wait for connection flight, but I’m ok with that as I know the airport and there’s a quiet little cafe bar there that has wi fit and sells very good coffee. Also a good chance to stretch the legs.
Laugh if you must but I took my scales away with me, and I have managed to lose 2 lb. I’ve been swimming and walking ( oh how I will miss the pool) I think next time I go away a print of them may keep me mindful of what I’m eating and drinking. . I’m halfway through week 5 and obviously being away from home and my own kitchen I’ve not been able to stick to it religiously but I have consumed far less than I ever would have done previously.
They say it takes 3 weeks for something to become a habit, so maybe that’s it, maybe I’m just in the right frame of mind this time round.
Just would like to say this thread is great, ideas for meals, trials and tribulations it’s all in the thread!
Freudian slurp still laughing about the resistance bands,
Good luck to us all

Snowglobes · 21/06/2018 05:07

YIPEE!!! I’m 10.13.6!!! 2 months ago was 12.3 so very happy with this. I’ve still got quite a tummy though. It’s bigger than my boobs which isn’t a great look!
dont I also have the ‘happy scale’ app that someone on here recommended - it’s brill as gives you predictions etc.
Ah slurp that’s funny. I’ve got some of those bands somewhere but no idea what to do with them. Jillian looks good bear but We’ve no DVD player at the mo so think I’ll find an app to help me tone. Any recommendations pls?
I think you’ve done well chrispen as being away I’d expect to gain so to actually lose anything is a massive achievement!
Ooh very have a fab time in the States! How exciting!!!!!
Now to try and go back to sleep for an hour or so! Why am I waking so early!!!

chrispenrallt1 · 21/06/2018 05:39

Well done snow globes. It’s always fantastic to get down into the next stone. I hope that will be me in about 5 weeks .
We are two hours ahead here, so when I go for an early swim at 5 am just as the sun is coming up it’s only 3 am at home !

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/06/2018 07:17

There’s loads on YouTube (look up fitness blenders, or a woman named Jessica smith (I think- there’s a thread on here for her fans!) - if you have a smart tv you can just watch YouTube through it into your living room. You can’t get Jillian on YouTube anymore, I play it through the kids PS4. The 30day shred is brutal but it will definitely tone you up. Please be kind to your knees doing any ‘at home’ workouts as it only takes one badly performed move to properly affect your running/walking regime.

I was a little piggy yesterday, ate millions of calories, paying the price today. I’ve sat and planned every morsel I will eat today hoping to keep on the straight and narrow, do not know what got into me yesterday. I’m going to fast as long as I can this morning, get loads of water drunk, and try and reset my insulin resistance a bit. I’m sure the issue was not having any decent sleep this week, (Ds ate a bloody cherry stone on Tuesday and his resulting bellyache kept him up all night)- last night I slept better so hopefully that will have a positive effect today.
