Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Oblomov what about pork scratchings? They are mega calories, but 100% carb free (unlike popadoms etc which still have carbs, or nuts) and I have managed to find small multipack bags in packs of 6 at Tesco, they are about 130 cals a bag.

Or the salted popcorn, Tesco have those in small individual bags. Not carb free, but small enough bags to satisfy the plan and also the craving- I think the bags we had were 45 cals a bag/6g carbs.

Ahh oblomov sending hugs! Not surprised you’re tearful after 1.5hr meeting with a head! AND no blooming kitchen!! Ugh! I’m going to google spicy kale crisp recipes for when your kitchen is back! I’m sure you could add spice to those chickpeas too! Hope your day improves Flowers

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 19/06/2018 16:43

Quite excited about my supper - mini peppers stuffed with bacon & cream cheese plus baked tomato and carrot chips. Smells amazing - photo to follow!

Today will be 815 cal 38g carbs.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 19/06/2018 16:58

Gah, every time I buy peanut butter or mixed nuts, I am reminded of exactly why I don’t buy peanut butter or mixed nuts. I absolutely cannot be trusted. It’s so wasteful but I have just thrown out the PB jar and the remains of the nuts because I just cannot stop eating them, and every handful is 100 calories!

Boom. Delicious.

I can't have nuts in the house either. No self control.

Need to get back on track - is the BSD book worth buying for recipes and any others please

Snowglobes · 19/06/2018 17:52

That made me laugh bear! Nuts are blooming lethal unless you’re ‘baby hands Michael Mosley’ and stop at the baby ‘handful’. Beware of that in the recipe book new people (forgotten usernames sorry) Ooh where’s your recipe from amazing? Looks yummy. Looking forward to these with the Spanish chicken & chorizo (in oven) later. I’ve accidently not eaten today so decided to cook this rather high calorie (495) dish tonight rather than later in the week as planned. Still need to work out how many more cals the courgette and brocolli will be (cooked in the chorizo oil).

parsley I only really use the recipe book - it’s more accurate than the little general diet book. Everything is easy and made with everyday ingredients too. I’d struggle without it.

I made it up - rasher of bacon & half an onion cooked and cooled. Mixed with 40g soft cheese, 20g grated cheddar, paprika and cayenne. Stuffed into peppers then baked at 180 for 25 mins. I think they would freeze well at the stuffed stage. Will try that later in the week.

Snowglobes · 19/06/2018 18:17

slurp I have to weigh my nuts - 15g of walnuts goes into my fave lunch of cottage cheese and pear. If you imagine how much a 6 month old could hold it’s about 15g! Can’t recall off hand how many cals 15g is but it’s not too bad!

I weigh EVERYTHING. Even lettuce.

Snowglobes · 19/06/2018 18:21

Spanish chicken with chorizo. This is my youngest’s portion - mine will be a lot bigger as soooo hungry!
amazing I’m not sure how well uncooked peppers would freeze?

What’s the recipe book called that you all use? I have the 8-week blood sugar diet, but when I google recipe book it comes up with several MM books. I want the right one Grin

Snowglobes · 19/06/2018 18:26

slurp Grab a handful & then weigh it. Then check weight on MFP to see cals. You may be more accurate than me! At least you’ll then know. My handfuls were gorilla sized! I like nuts!!

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 19/06/2018 18:27

Snow - that looks lovely. Recipe please! I think the peppers will be ok because by the time they're roasted they've gone squishy anyway. I hope!

Snowglobes · 19/06/2018 18:27

I have this one

Blood Sugar Diet thread 11
TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 19/06/2018 18:28

I don't use one. I make everything up. Which mostly goes well and very occasionally is utterly disgusting!

AvonCallingBarksdale · 19/06/2018 18:37

Thank you Snow

Snowglobes · 19/06/2018 18:39

It’s from the above book but very similar to any cacciatore recipe. This has cannellini beans in too. And chorizo! I’m putting couscous with it for the kids plus brocolli & courgette. I doubled everything too then put it in MFP and without the broccoli etc comes to 495 so pretty hefty!

I use Jamie Oliver a lot, just miss out the carbs. I love his recipes. Tesco have that recipe book at the moment, I might get it for some new inspiration.

Went for a hot muggy 8km run, got lost, and then some strange ferret type (weasel??) rattish thing ran out in front of me on a country lane with no pavements. WTF??!!! Still not had my dinner yet, the dc had bolognese but I also made a smoked mackerel frittata so I might just have a wedge of that.

OP posts:
TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 19/06/2018 19:42

A stoat or weasel? Weasels are weasily recognised and stoats are stoatally different Grin

I'm very jealous, I'd love to see either.

ChocEggNoThanks · 19/06/2018 20:03

Some great recipes here! I must make the parmesan crisps from the BSD cookbook. Curry here tonight was very nice but feeling snacky. Might have an extra 80 calories for some Halo ice cream.

Oblomov18 · 20/06/2018 06:03

Thank you everyone.

And yes, salted popcorn might just work!! Will buy some at Tesco's this week.
