Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Went to a 'Gin Evening' with ds1's football mums last night.

Today, oven, American fridge, and dishwasher delivered.

Cooked for close friend and unwell neighbour who is a vegan, dinner: cauliflower burger, beetroot burger, buffalo cauliflower bites, Tesco pre-prepared salad. Nice.

Yum Bear!!

DandelionAndBedrock · 16/06/2018 21:57

No idea how many cals/carbs today - was with DP’s family so had grilled fish and salad, then a snack of some smoked salmon when we got home an hour ago. Shouldn’t be over 800 but the fish was in a surprise sauce that I intended to scrape off, but most of it was eaten... it was fruity rather than creamy though.

Avoided the booze as well - v proud of myself.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/06/2018 07:55

Weighed in this morning as now the bulk of the weekend excess is done, and I’m still 10.6, so a maintain. This is very pleasing. My plan was/ is to lose in the week and maintain at the weekend so something’s worked this weekend at least. Now just to hold it together today.

I’m planning a salad lunch, and we have pulled pork and crackling for dinner with roasted veg. I’m going to menu plan today for the week ahead: last week’s planning really helped and I have enjoyed having some variety from my normal rut. I’ve eaten more cooked veg this week than I have in a long time too, but it hasn’t had a detriment effect.

Lots of gardening planned today, I will probably do a quick treadmill run later, plus generally busy day doing family stuff. Enjoy your Sunday everyone!

Weighed myself this morning and I've lost six pounds! 😄

Had a sausage sandwich for breakfast

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 17/06/2018 12:56

Well done! That's a fantastic achievement.

I've just had a delicious lunch of ham, cheese, hardboiled eggs and an apple. 294 calories 15g carbs. Absolutely stuffed now. Now trying to plan evening meals for the week before H goes to Aldi.

thefishwhocouldwish · 17/06/2018 13:10

Well done madness choc and fanjo and amazing on your losses.

Official weigh in for me is tomorrow and that's seven weeks. So far I'm looking at just over 16lbs and another two would get me to a milestone that will really feel within touching distance of target. I've definitely binged had a few days off this week, I'll blame Ofsted. There's only so much the mind and body can cope with when you get less than 24 hours notice of an inspection.

Only 5 weeks left at work and 9 left in the UK. I've just had another and probably final wardrobe clear out and listed a load more on Ebay, all of which can go to the charity shop if need be. I've also listed my size 6 Next jeans which were definitely a vanity purchase about four years ago when I accidentally got under 8st and looked like a stick. I didn't try them on but I only have one pair of jeans that I'm keeping as it's way too hot for jeans in Dubai 90% of the year anyway.

Hope you are all having a BSD friendly Fathers Day. I'm doing 5:2 more than BSD from now on but still largely avoiding beige. This can only last so long as the plan is to empty the house by the end of July, so DD and I will have to eat our way through all that's left in the fridge and cupboards!

ATurnipOfMyOwn · 17/06/2018 14:54

Some brilliant losses here - well done!

Last night a pizza happened, (we went out, to a tiny 'proper' pizzeria and there was literally nothing else on the menu so I had no choice - honest guv!) Grin It was massive and I was completely stuffed after half of it, so although I thought I'd been missing pizza - turned out I was a bit 'meh' about it. I also only managed one glass of wine, which is very unusual for me. Halo

I invented the most delicious dinner the other night - came in at 342 cals on MFP. I wish I'd taken a photo because it looked so nice, I will do it again this week and wow you all with my culinary photography:

  • 100g salmon fillet - rubbed with Schwartz Cajun seasoning, cooked on griddle pan.
  • 150g courgetti, microwaved
  • 125g butter beans
Place courgetti on plate, butter beans on top and around outside and salmon on top. Very, very nice.

I've decided only to weigh twice a week on Wednesday (so I can tell my PT how I'm doing), and Friday (before the inevitible slide into a bottle). That decision has nothing whatsoever to do with my accidental weigh-in this morning which showed a 2lb gain after a couple of 1,200 cal days this week. Nothing at all.

Snowglobes · 17/06/2018 17:47

Hello all! Some fabulous losses here ladies - well done! I’ve had a glutinous weekend (what’s new? you ask). Visited friends over the weekend so on Friday had 3 G&Ts with calorific fevertree. Saturday I avoided the bacon sarnie breakfast but was starving come lunchtime and ate a decent portion of the lasagne and not just the salads I was planning to focus on. The evening was seriously alcohol fuelled and shockingly had a hog roast bap! Avoided the croissants this morning but gorged our at the BBQ - no bread or potatoes or wine. Dreading what I’ll weigh tomorrow am. I’d love to have maintained but doubt it. Have meal planned the rest of the week so hoping to lose!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/06/2018 18:34

Ah snow , these things happen. It won’t be the end of the world I’m sure and a few good days on plan will see you back where you were.

I’ve been moderately good today. Food ok, a few extra nibbles that shouldn’t have happened, and rather a generous piece of delicious hot crackling while I served up dinner (I’m not having mine til later as I am running this evening)

Haven’t planned my menu yet either as I did a rece of the freezers and reckon I can get away with a few days of eating what’s in there before we need to shop. Trying to save some money. I’ve made £50 on eBay selling some size 12’s (which I was reluctant to do at first because there’s every chance I may need them again!), but pleased they’ve gone and that’s actually given me a real boost. I don’t and won’t need them again!!!

It’s our wedding anniversary tomorrow and despite having had 2 giant babies in the last 7 years and gaining 4 stone each time, I will be 12lbs lighter tomorrow than I was on my wedding day!!

turnip I will always eat pizza. As a vegetarian who can't eat eggs Sad and soya (pretty indifferent to that one) pizza is sometimes my only option when I eat out, and even if it wasn't I refuse to give it up. Love your weigh in plan too!

snow I wasn't sure if you meant glutinous or gluttonous and then I figured that in BSD terms they are probably the same thing Smile

Has anyone watched the Diabetes Fast Fix programme that was on in the week? I found it quite interesting (although not much new info) but was amused by the Just Eat ad that came on in one of the breaks!!

Parsley1234 · 17/06/2018 21:09

Was off plan yesterday it was lovely !! Back on it today after seeing DS for lunch has anyone else got a disorganised teen ? Driving me insane with lost stuff and not knowing where it could be anyway back to gym tomorrow and good walk with food plan and positive attitude

Snowglobes · 17/06/2018 21:20

Grin well spotted fish

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 17/06/2018 22:15

I am in the pub. I have had sparkling water and NOTHING ELSE. Extremely proud of myself. I've been here for 3 hours. Need the loo rather badly though. Rubbish at quiz but hoping for a win in the meat raffle!

Acorncat · 17/06/2018 22:38

I watched that programme - they didn’t really sell the diet! The participants were so miserable. Mind you the shakes they drank looked horrible, surely they could have prepared meals for them. But their results were good at least.

I keep forgetting to log my food so I suspect my calories are creeping higher. I leave 400 for my tea but today was rather a lot of gammon and the carbonara sauce that was on here. Very tasty! That and my new found addiction for roasted pistachios Blush

ChocEggNoThanks · 17/06/2018 23:16

This weekend went badly. I think that's enough said Blush

Lallypopstick · 18/06/2018 08:00

Day 1 of the 8 weeks for me today. I've planned all my meals and will do a top up shop tonight for tomorrow. Ideally I'd like to avoid cooking breakfasts in the morning so I might do some of the smoothies.

Going to do my measurements now.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 18/06/2018 08:15

Good luck! Planning really helps.

Oblomov18 · 18/06/2018 11:07

I am Struggling to find anything I want to eat.
Even some of the nice meals you are all describing which you say were delicious have me squirming with un-interest.

I'd rather drink 2 bottles of wine and dive into a swimming pool of crisps. I don't know how to get out of this 'rut'.

abitoflight · 18/06/2018 11:40

Tonight I'm having hair bikers on pot spicy pork
I'm doubling the pork and only having veg and pork, not the rice, with a pile of veg - not sure what yet. May make ratatouille to eat with it and use over next few days
Back from hols and 1lb up on scales so that's fine

thenewaveragebear1983 · 18/06/2018 11:59

Ah Oblomov it’s horrible when you feel so uninspired! I sometimes feel like I need something to cut through the ‘overfed’ feeling- usually something like (non BSD) oranges or pink grapefruit, or something really spicy?

OP posts:
TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 18/06/2018 15:59

Ham slices rolled up with cream cheese in the middle work for me. Plus distraction to keep my hands and mind busy. Also having a long bath. I would never eat in the bath!

Maybe increase your carbs a bit? A couple of ryvita or some oatcakes? Something crunchy and satisfying.

ChocEggNoThanks · 18/06/2018 18:32

Oblomov I have realised that I just can't eat crisps. They are a massive binge food probably my worst. I think they will be for birthdays and Christmas only Sad Would something really fatty help? Cheese and crackers? Garlic mushrooms? Super dark dark chocolate?

Only 1lb on after the weekend which was MUCH better than I deserved! Heavy TOTM coming up though so need to see how I go. 800 today.

How do you make yourself drink enough? I am rubbish at remembering. I have survived all day on a single cup of coffee.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 18/06/2018 18:51

Choc I set a timer on my Fitbit so 6 times a day it goes off and I drink a pint of water. After a few weeks of doing that it becomes second nature, I drink gallons now!
