Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

I ended up eating baaaad things. But had 1536 calories in total yesterday and did 15000 steps plus cycled to work so may be ok. Will grit my teeth and weigh in a minute when the bloody children get out of the bathroom

Oblomov18 · 15/06/2018 06:59

Quite a few bad days here: ok food wise, but then wine crisps and chocolate. Guess I haven't dealt with that 'bingeing' side of my food personality yet!

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 15/06/2018 07:15

Total loss at the end of week 4 - 13.4 lb. So close to that stone but still incredibly chuffed! My next mini target after 1 stone is just over 2lb more to lose to take me into the next stone bracket. Which I'm very excited by!

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 15/06/2018 07:21

Out of 28 days there were 9 when I went over 900 cal. Imagine if I'd done all 28. 28 days left to go of this round but there is a day camping trip looming. I'm mulling over how to handle it.

Hoviscats · 15/06/2018 07:44

well done amazing that is brilliant! I am hoping I can replicate that at the end of the first 4 weeks. Coming to the end of week 2 and have devided not to weigh myaelf at all until end of week 4 so I dont know if I am on track or not!

Definitely feel thinner though and I feel so much better in myself which is half the battle!

We are going away for the weekend with the kids after school today so am trying to figure out a plan to stay on track.... We are staying in a cottage so going to take a plan friendly dinner for tonight and also taking picnic food for tomorrow as we are going out for the day. So I can make myself a salad and take some cooked chicken which will be fine.

Going to do a pub dinner saturday evening so thinking most places will do a steak and I can have extra veg and no potatoes. Not too worried about missing out on pudding, I have found my (very) sweet tooth has definitely eased since starting this plan. I can always have a couple of bites of someone elses pudding anyway!

That just leaves the booze question....I have abstained since I started but going to take a bottle of gin and some slimline tonic and will have a couple of those in place of the 2 squares of dark chocolate I have been having most nights.

I may have a glass of wine at the pub which will take me over calories probably but if thats the worst it gets this weekend I will be bloody delighted!

Hope everyone has a lovely weekend Smile

veryveryquietly · 15/06/2018 09:03

Excellent job shrinking and great plan hovis

ChocEggNoThanks · 15/06/2018 09:17

Thanks Snow I seem to have lost a lot in the first 2 weeks and this last 2 weeks with much slower loss for a month in the middle! So you may find you get a sudden whoosh too and another half stone falls off!

Another 1lb gone here this morning so I have reached my interim goal which was 23lbs total loss. This next 3lbs is a known set point for me and will probably take real work to get past. So I think I will focus more on maintenance for the next while to see if I can stay around this weight (+ or - 5lbs) instead of reaching this weight and promptly piling it all back on. Then I will have another good run at it during the summer.

Shrink don't worry about the odd day here and there. A lot of us have form for going mad at the weekends but the overall trend is still down Smile

ChocEggNoThanks · 15/06/2018 09:19

And Hovis that is a good plan. We still have to live our lives! I haven't deprived myself on weekends away etc but just try to avoid the big 5 or accept that I will spend a few days losing weekend weight gain.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 15/06/2018 10:50

I am going to aim for no more than 4 days off plan in the next 4 weeks. I am trying to plan a bit for the summer holiday. I think I might aim to maintain and then start the 2nd round when term starts again as the tight routine and chance to cycle 3x week is really helpful.

Working in KS2 today so having to contend with lunch at 1ish and the fact that half the kids are taller than me! Very quiet as it's Eid so 35% are not here.

thereinmadnesslies · 15/06/2018 18:39

Evening all, I’ve reached the end of the 8 weeks and I’ve lost 24lbs which is 13% of my body weight.
I’ve decided to carry on with the 800 cals for another couple of weeks. I’d really like to get to 2st lost. The BMI calculator says I need to lose another 10lbs to get to the top of the healthy range for my height, so it would be great to get nearer to that as well.
Thanks for all the support on here, it’s made it a lot more achievable.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 15/06/2018 18:42

That is absolutely fantastic! Very well done. Any top tips? Did you stick to it strictly?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 15/06/2018 18:49

Well done therein, you should be very proud! Star

I’ve been in a thoroughly grouchy and pissed off mood all day, and been doing some angry eating Angry, don’t know why! Bit cheesed off with Dh, it’s our anniversary on Monday and apparently we cannot possibly sit down for a nice meal at home as it is the England match. So thinking maybe tomorrow, but noooooo he had invited loads of people round for a bbq! He doesn’t know it, but I’m refusing to shop or cook for said bbq, so we’ll see how that goes down! Grrrrrr

Just did a very fast angry 5km on the treadmill, which takes me to over 600km run so far this year! Dinner tonight is grilled chicken, mushrooms in cream sauce, and asparagus. And wine! But considering I’ve eaten loads today I might as well continue! Nothing carby, but just quite a lot of cheese.

DandelionAndBedrock · 15/06/2018 20:50

Well done, madness! Bear, I love a good angry workout - I’m much more efficient Grin.

Hoviscats · 15/06/2018 21:17

Well done madness that's brilliant!

I have managed to stick to the 800 cals despite 2 gins this evening so my weekend away has got off to a good start!

ponygirlcurtis · 15/06/2018 22:03

Lots of amazing losses here, well done everyone. I have had an upset stomach the last few days so I haven't eaten much but have been craving carby food to settle my stomach - the thought of my usual meals is making me feel sick. Tonight's dinner is a toasted pitta and hoummus and a cup of chamomile tea.

ChocEggNoThanks · 15/06/2018 22:20

Well done Madness great loss. And like you I am toying with the idea of doing another 2 weeks although maybe not being just as strict as this week. I want a buffer zone for the holidays.

Pony hope your stomach settles quickly Flowers

Bear good on you putting your foot down. My DH has form for this - deciding we should do something because it's not much work. Not much work for him! He won't repeat that mistake any time soon!

Feeling snacky tonight but we are out and about this weekend so trying to be sensible until tomorrow. Coming in at 920 cals today largely because of a thoughtless halfteaspoon of peanut butter!

I was at the GP earlier for an unrelated thing but I did mention the BSD and ask about the whole eating more fat issue. He was cautious but only because he said the info takes a while to filter through and the guidelines might change. He did say that cholesterol still matters but I asked which matters more: weight or cholesterol. I got his blessing to lose the weight first then worry about cholesterol if it creeps up eating more fat. Getting blood sugar and cholesterol done in a couple of weeks so will be interesting to see if there is any change.

abitoflight · 15/06/2018 22:32

I basically have been eating meat, veg, salad, eggs and gin
Had my cholesterol done last week and 3.2
The ratio of total cholesterol to hdl was 2.5 which they were amazed at as the best the screeners had seen
Yes I'm well within healthy bmi range but this WOE is great for me

GrimDamnFanjo · 16/06/2018 00:38

Just a quick progress report from me: 17 weeks and. 3 stone loss.
I did 800 for 12 and have been 5:2 after that.
One query though, I went away for 4 days, didn't go mad but scales said I put on 10lbs!!!!!
Surely that's not actually fat?
It's lost now and dropped off after a week but it does worry me that I seem to be really prone to a scales gain when I stop - it's happened before when on holidays.
Anyone else?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/06/2018 07:09

Morning all,
Grim it will be water, mostly. I am rubbish at the science stuff but basically when you eat low carb, your immediate stores of glycogen in your muscles get used up, and when you eat carbs they get replaced first, before any fat or anything is stored. They hold water molecules too, so after a big carb intake you’ll notice a gain of stored glycogen, plus water. Plus additional weight of food, other water retention, and actual ‘fat’/weight gain. The quickest way to get those glycogen stores gone is a vigorous workout after fasting (that’s what the stores are for!) as they are quick accessible energy. Marathon runners do it intentionally, they talk about carb loading before big runs.

Unless of course you ate 35,000 additional calories on your holidays?Grin

I ate a lot yesterday, I was tired and cranky. Half a glass of wine and I fell asleep on the sofa and have slept solidly all night. That helped keep my evening munchies down! Running this morning with my friend, then bbq (although it’s raining here so that might end that anyway!)

Happy Saturday y’all!

OP posts:
AvonCallingBarksdale · 16/06/2018 07:40

Yes, on that point that Bear made, DH is running a marathon today so has been carb loading this week in a big way ready to burn it all off. We’ve hardly eaten any food in common since last weekend Grin. Annoying perimenopausal period has meant I’ve struggled to keep on message and have veered into extra chocolate intake (still 70% though!) and had 2 homemade flapjacks and 2 glasses of rose yesterday Blush. Feeling better today and it’s a quiet weekend while DH is off running up and down hills for fun so should be able to claw back to BSD. Have a good weekend all.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 16/06/2018 08:30

Start weight 15 stone 1.6lb. Weight today 14 stone 1.8lb. So close to that 1 stone loss. I'm going to give H the scales to hide and not weight until next Friday.

ChocEggNoThanks · 16/06/2018 11:12

Fanjo that's fantastic weight loss and Bear that is reassuring that there's a decent explanation!

This weekend will be a bit tough as we are out a lot facing lots of temptations! I do have lunch prepped though so might just be tonight to worry about.

ibuiltahomeforyou · 16/06/2018 17:31

I'm closing in on day 6 of this WOE and have found the week so much easier than I thought! Interested to weigh myself tomorrow to see how I've done...

veryveryquietly · 16/06/2018 17:49

Less said about yesterday the better, but today seems to be semi ok. Just finished early dinner so at about 925 calories but 50 gr carbs - have just learned the hard way that nectarines have 10 gr carbs each. But they were hovering in that perfect moment before going bad, so they had to be eaten.

Most taxing exercise today has been cleaning all the crap out of the robovac. Ugh, hideous. I think everyone in this household, including the cat, needs to be shaved bald so I don't have to do this again any time soon.

(Robovac manual suggests I should be removing and cleaning out the front wheel and the rotating bristle brush twice weekly. Robovac manual seems not to understand that my lax attitude towards cleaning is why I purchased robovac in the first place.)

Hoviscats · 16/06/2018 20:56

Well after being totally on plan until about 6pm (despite the toddler being up half the night ) I have ended up at about 1200 cals due to excessive wine consumption.

On the whole given I am away I am not unhappy about it. It could/would have beem sooooo much worse. Grin

Back on strict plan tomorrow but for now I have enjoyed the wine and a couple of squares of dark chocolate!
