Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Well done Bear 😊 Sounds great to hear about a last target!

Another 1lb gone here this morning so I am 1lb away from the next interim target, 22lbs off in total. I may do 2 weeks more but slightly less strict, then I will be on holiday for 2 weeks. Would be good to have a buffer zone!

Good luck today everyone!

PrimalLass · 14/06/2018 08:01

Morning all. I am very behind on this thread due to work madness but will catch up this morning.

Have been doing this in a haphazard way this week and have lost 1lb. It's mostly the same weight as in weeks 1 and 2 Grin

We go on holiday 4 weeks today. Same place as last two years so I would like to be a good bit thinner than before. The countdown is on.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 14/06/2018 08:48

After a disappointing start to the week I’ve given my head a wobble and am focussed again. Going out on a day long work trip today with a preordered lunch (ordered for me before I’d gone back in BSD) so I might have to rein it in heavily this evening. 8 weeks till holiday so the clock is ticking. I gave blood the other day and had a cup of tea and biscuits after and the biscuits were soooo sweet. Can’t say I disliked them as such but definitely noticed a taste difference!

Acorncat · 14/06/2018 08:49

Has anyone got Keto rash? I read it only goes away when you come back out of ketosis Sad

Parsley1234 · 14/06/2018 09:13

Well done BEAr and Choc how long did it take I’m aiming on 24 lbs 4 down already !im doing exercise strength training and yoga every day so hoping if I go over it balances out ! Have a good day all !

PrimalLass · 14/06/2018 09:53

I've never really made it into ketosis, no matter how low carb I go.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 14/06/2018 10:00

What’s ketosis??

veryveryquietly · 14/06/2018 11:28

Hurrah bear and choc

Too much snacking yesterday (but good snacks - almonds, cheese, and cherries) brought me in around 1100 cals and 45 gr carbs, higher than ideal but fine really for me in this phase. Scale has been steady for last 3 days after last whoosh episode, hoping for a drop this weekend.

Need to start eating the freezer contents down for next week before long trip, so mentally preparing myself for a lot of odd meals!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/06/2018 12:12

Ketosis is when you basically burn fat for energy because your carb intake is so low. You can buy urine dip sticks to see if there’s ketones; it’s achieved by dropping carbs very low (20g per day) and increasing protein too (based on an amount of grams of protein per pound of body weight). In theory once you achieve ketosis, your body just burns through fat and you can eat as many calories as you want, your appetite drops etc. It’s not an aim of this plan by the way, we are allowed more carbs than you can have to achieve ketosis.

Acorncat · 14/06/2018 13:10

Although it’s called a Keto rash it seems it’s just caused by fasting or low carb. I’ve no idea if I’m actually in ketosis, I’m having more than 20g a day, probably less than 50 though so doubt it 🤔

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/06/2018 13:38

I’ve never actually heard of getting a rash when low carbing. Maybe it’s a detox thing? I always get a few spots and blemishes when I really go for it, sporting a proper corker on my chin today!!

OP posts:
Acorncat · 14/06/2018 14:54

I hadn’t heard of it either until I googled it, don’t remember reading about that in the BSD book 😒. I’m going to up my carbs a little and see if it stops it. Frustrating!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/06/2018 15:32

I’ve just googled it and it looks pretty bad, hope yours isn’t that bad?? Very strange!

Well, in an experimental spirit I decided to try Halo Top ice cream, the kind that's supposed to be relatively low in cals etc.

The sea salt caramel flavour is basically like putting an icy cold tablespoon of brown sugar in your mouth. Scary sweet.

Won't buy again; will probably use up by putting a spoonful here and there on berries, nectarines, something with some tartness to balance this out. At least it wasn't a major calorie expenditure to try it (though it wasn't cheap).

That's it, no more exploration of frozen treats for me, I'm going to stick to the few things that I know aren't too cloying as summer desserts.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/06/2018 17:00

We tried the chocolate one a few months ago and it was the same, overly sweet. I’ve bought some ice lolly moulds today thinking that my morning shake blend might be quite nice as a frozen lolly.

I’ve made experimental shish kebabs today, but using beef mince and a spoonful of red pesto in the mix (so kind of Med style!), which smell amazing as they’re cooking. Will report back!

Today has been really difficult. Have gone over by about 100 calories because I ended up having to have lunch at 11.30 and then go on a school trip (about 6000 extra steps on my day) followed by cycling home. Felt like I was made of lead by the time I got home so had a bit of cheese and ham and lots of water.

Made an amazing curry for supper. Chicken, butter beans and chick peas. Cooked long and slow. Forgot to take a pic though but here's my empty bowl...

End of week 4 weigh in tomorrow. Hoping for another half off but feel a bit crap and bloated.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 14/06/2018 17:31

Oops.

I have the peanut butter cup Halo and it's really nice! Not too sweet at all and very satisfying- a quarter tub definitely feels like a good portion and only about 85 cals. I was sceptical because I hate most sweeteners but honestly didn't even notice this one.

As for how long weight loss was I have been doing this badly for nearly 8 weeks. 22lbs down and honestly this is the first week I've actually managed days at 800 cals! First few weeks I never got below 950 a day and it got worse from there. But I have avoided the big five on the whole and that helps. Plus I still have another 1.5 stone to lose so was fat enough to lose fast.

I had a spontaneous compliment today where someone noticed I had lost weight. It was good to get some feedback as no one seems to have noticed! I can see I have lost a good bit but maybe I just still look big to everyone else!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/06/2018 20:35

Haven’t counted calories today; everything within plan but completely unsure how much I’ve had. Had a cooked brunch (bacon, egg, 1/2 sausage, tomatoes, mushrooms, beans), then a shake with kefir, berries, almond milk and avocado for lunch, then dinner was 2 kebabs made with mince and pesto, with a bit of Greek yog and strawberries. Just had a little sliver of feta and a glass of red.

Done 20k steps. 5km run.

My weekend strategy is going to be to not go too off piste, Keep tracking my calories and not just go freestyle. That’s usually how I end up undoing my hard work from the week. If I can end the weekend the same weight as I start it I’ll be very happy.

Bloody idiot, me.

Hoviscats · 14/06/2018 20:55

Well I have done ok today and am within calories again ao feeling good. Really wanted cake today though....cake mix specifically... as I have just had to make and ice 2 dozen fairy cakes for a school event tomorrow. Shock

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/06/2018 20:58

Amazing all is not lost. Step away from the cookie jar!! We all have those days- if you must eat (and sometimes we must!) I’d suggest do yourself a little platter: ham, cheese, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, and drink a few pints of water. If you go mad on BSD friendly stuff, the impact is much much less. Don’t wave that wagon goodbye just yet.

I’ve just loosely totalled up my cals and it’s about 1800, so tdee. Not awful, but...... not ideal!
I’ve calculated for tomorrow and in theory I can have my 2 meals, and wine, and come in under 1000 cals. Much more likely with a plan in place I reckon!

veryveryquietly · 14/06/2018 21:20

Closing the kitchen at 1012 cals and 38 carbs - a pretty good day overall. Light on exercise, but got lots of work done which was pretty necessary. Night all!

Parsley1234 · 14/06/2018 22:34

Lost 1more lb this am did two classes and had protein berry shake some betroot with eggs and guess what tuna corgetti again ! I was hungry today hence the betroot and eggs cd have been worse though ! I am hoping to have a good day tomorrow off plan carb refeed sat then back on Sunday and through the week

Snowglobes · 14/06/2018 23:07

amazing have a cup of tea!! chocegg pretty sure we started around the same time and you’ve lost loads more than my 14lbs so give yourself a lot of credit!!
Out for dinner tonight and wore a dress that hasn’t fitted for ages! Lots of compliments. Unfortunately had 3 G&Ts with blooming calorific fevertree and a wine! Dinner itself was fish and veg in a tomato sauce. Tasted quite sweet though. Haven’t a clue calories etc. so no point putting it in MFP as it’s too late now & is what it is! Need to starve tomorrow as a carb heavy weekend ahead staying at friends with not only pizza’s planned but also a lasagne (and alcohol)!!
