Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Choc - i read that as "if you want something, fatty..." and am now wetting myself laughing Grin

ChocEggNoThanks · 12/06/2018 20:36

Better to have a controlled go over than a resist-resist-binge night in my experience. 200 cals of cheese or unsalted nuts will hit the spot. I also like full fat yoghurt even if it's fruity and sugary - it's just satisfying.

ChocEggNoThanks · 12/06/2018 20:38

I think we would lose our rep as the nicest supportiest thread on MN if we start chucking the names around.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 12/06/2018 20:39

I'm still laughing. I think the laughing may have filled the void. Thank you!

veryveryquietly · 12/06/2018 20:48

Grin at the version with the comma! Def agree with ChocEgg that it's much better to go over a little bit in a controlled and satisfying way - and cheese, nuts, yogurt all good options.

Very good day here, especially welcome after last night's rapid inhalation of sweets 'episode': 883 cals, 28 gr carbs, and made it to the gym for a fairly long workout Halo. Now I'm knackered, ready for bed, and it's not even 9.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 12/06/2018 20:56

I am over the urge. Had an extra cup of tea and think I'm ok.

I keep thinking about certain things people have said and they give me a bit of a boost. Positive and negative.

E.g. "You've lost weight? Can't see it myself." - idiot friend.

"Wow, you've changed your body so much. I'm really impressed. You feel so much stronger" massage therapist.
"If you really want something, fatty..." my conscience just now

Parsley1234 · 12/06/2018 21:07

Good day today protein shake with peanut butter and sane supper aslast night with even more garlic ginger chilli and courgetti god it’s fab !!! I missed my exercise class so did yoga instead feal ok don’t want to jinx it but was 2lb down this am

ibuiltahomeforyou · 12/06/2018 22:00

I had a pea and feta frittata for breakfast which was LOVELY! Just some roast chicken for lunch, then the foil fish for dinner which was really delicious actually.

I'm impressed so far with the quality of recipes in the book.

abitoflight · 12/06/2018 23:49

Coming in at 867 which is fine
Tomorrow miss breakfast,
I'll have to have something with cabbage for lunch quickly - maybe a chicken breast
Then off on hols ✈️
May have to have Bacardi and Diet Coke due to general lack of light tonic in holiday places and otherwise Mediterranean diet
I'm so looking forward to having my breakfast eggs cooked for me but sadly will have to omit the tinned fruit/ pink grapefruit/ melon that I love on hols. May have yog and nuts instead
Got gym stuff and will do plenty of swimming and walking

Snowglobes · 13/06/2018 06:35

Morning everyone!
Well done just having a cup of tea ‘fatty’ amazing! I had a good day yesterday. Pilates and a good dog walk, roasted everything despite being quite warm & muggy - ham, cauli, carrots (pots for the kids).
Was going to do butternut squash for dinner tonight but the carbs are mahoosive so now thinking maybe give kids & DH the butternut squash (risotto) and I’ll have something entirely different. I normally cook everyone the same but... they love risotto so may as well carb them out!! Sooooo pleased I checked it first as am slowly but surely still loosing! Hope everyone has a great day!

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 13/06/2018 07:04

I'm so glad I went for the cup of tea and laughter option. 12.5lb down! First time I've been below 200lb for 3 years.

abitoflight · 13/06/2018 07:09

That's great shrinking! Well done

thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/06/2018 07:17

Well done amazing!

Weighed in at 10.7.5 this morning, that’s another 1.5lb off. Really focusing on my food and weighing everything is clearly paying off!

Today, lots of jobs round the house with Ds, beds to change etc. Then my sister and little niece may pop round. My lunch is a ‘sort of’ frittata with smoked fish, egg, peas and feta, and dinner will be spicy chicken and salad. Feeling achy after my long run yesterday so might just do a short treadmill run and a bit of Jillian instead today.

Have a good day everyone! Have a great holiday abit!

Well done Shrink 😊 and all the losses. Another low cal day yesterday and another 1.5lbs gone so I have officially lost 21lbs. This is my last week in theory but it's also about the strictest I've been since week 2!

There was definitely a whoosh in the wings - I could feel the 'squidgy' fat last night!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/06/2018 07:49

Well done choc, and I always find a strict week always pays off! Are you carrying on after 8 weeks or are you done?

LunaTrap · 13/06/2018 09:18

Wow all the losses are amazing! How often does everyone weigh themselves? I do it daily but not sure if that's a good idea as I get disheartened if I don't see a loss. Today I'm 10st7 though, 2 lb off since Monday. Just over a year ago I was 13st7 so very pleased that I've reached 3 stone off finally. But also annoyed with myself because this diet really works and if I'd got back on it sooner this could have happened months ago!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/06/2018 10:05

Luna I try not to weigh every day as it can be a bit of an addictive thing for me. I tend to weigh myself more if I’m not exactly following the plan, and it can get where i’m sort of justifying myself by the fact that I’m not gaining. Not really healthy! I try and aim for a few weigh ins a week, on a Monday and a Friday usually.

So many great results this week! Congrats everyone! V impressed with your 2 hour walk/training hovis Actually a long walk sounds lovely, perhaps if the weather holds today.

Wow luna that's a great loss! And congrats shrinking on entering 'one-derland' as they say on Reddit

Have a lovely holiday abit . And happy Jillianing bear and have a good day all

Hoviscats · 13/06/2018 18:06

Thanks very. Was a lovely evening and I really enjoyed the walk. Even made it back for Love Island (no judging please BlushGrin)!

Day 10 almost done and on track for another 800 cal day. I am feeling really good now after struggling with energy levels at the start and still feeling motivated...I just hope that feeling hangs around!

Posting on this thread and generally checking in is definitely helping :)

thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/06/2018 20:18

Finishing on 950 today. 60g carbs, 10k steps and no running as I’ve sat around drinking coffee with my sister and little niece and Ds. A nice chilled day! Carbs are high as I couldn’t find anything for dinner so did a chicken curry with a sauce jar Blushas I had been too busy nattering to decide what to cook. I did try cauliflower rice though (actually just very finely sliced cauli and some chopped mushrooms) and it was surprisingly tasty with my curry.

So all in all, a reasonable day!
I’d like another 800-900 calorie day tomorrow before the weekend arrives again to spoil my plans!

Well done on all the losses ! This thread checking in is helping a lot abd seeing other people’s losses is great ! Had the same tuna corgetti I love it and protein shake for meals 879 and carbs 74 which seemed really high ! Since I had berries and veg see what tomorrow brings

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 13/06/2018 21:23

Parsley - I had tuna courgetti tonight. Was yum. Think I slightly prefer the ham but the tuna is more filling.

Ending the day on 863 cal 48g carb. Cycled to work and back plus did 12000 steps. Feel like I've found my groove!

Acorncat · 13/06/2018 22:38

Snow my smoothie is things that I don’t like but should be eating so half an avocado, spinach, 5 almonds, coconut oil, 100gm of berry mix and almond milk. It’s really filling but about 250 I think. It was keeping me going until tea time though I’ve been having some nuts for breakfast to stop the lightheadedness.

Snowglobes · 14/06/2018 07:02

Thank you acorn think I may give that a try. Came in over 1000 cals yesterday and 48g carbs. Think I was heavy handed with the walnuts. Weight static this am (daily weighed). I do find it difficult to get fat in without going over the cals. Do you guys plan in the morning for the rest of the day or several days in advance? I think I need more pre-planning. I often just wing it.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/06/2018 07:13

Morning all, I’m another pound down this morning and that’s 10.6 (officially 2 stones down!!) and I’ve just reset my target on Fitbit hopefully for the last time. 7lb to go! I feel really skinny this morning!

Snow I tend to plan a week in advance for shopping purposes. This week I planned 7 lunches and 7 dinners but haven’t assigned them to a day, just ticked them off when I’ve used them up. I’ve had more veg than I’d normally have as I tried to mix it up a bit. With regards to fat, I never really think about it but your post made me reflect on it- I guess I actually base my meals around it. So either meat/fish avocado, egg or cheese is the main ingredient of every meal, and then I add in around it. I don’t stick rigidly to 800 cals though; the extra 200 really help as I use them mostly for fat. I find it extremely hard to keep the calories down to 800 and only really manage it occasionally.
