Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Bear - I love the look of your supper! I think 4/5 of our household would too. Did you just roast the squash and then pile up the stuff on top?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/06/2018 19:59

Thanks amazing, yes I just cut the top part of the squash into slices about a cm thick, then put oil and seasoning on them, roasted them about halfway, then added bacon lardons and goats cheese for the rest of the time. Really tasty! 2 worked out at about 260 calories. Dh will have 2 tonight, and I will have the others tomorrow. The pre-roasted veg was a new one for me too, I get so fed up throwing veg away that I decided this week I would use up loads of oddments so it’s got squash, mushroom, sundried toms, cherry toms and roasted peppers in there; just made my lunchbox for tomorrow with 1/4 of this mix, feta cheese and salad. Hope it’s as good as it looked.

I think I did ok today...

Chia pudding for breakfast, roast chicken as a snack and chicken salad for lunch, then lamb meatballs from the book for dinner with salad - delicious!

Parsley1234 · 11/06/2018 22:06

I went to full body strength and can’t stop thinking about the courgette carbonara I even got out my spiraluser to do the ribbons but I made it with tuna mushrooms onions garlic and ginger with chilli oh my god that was fab !!! 397 cals and my peanut butter protein shake under 800 cals today onto tomorrow

chrispenrallt1 · 11/06/2018 22:09

Hello all been missing in action, no internet but all hooked up now. Away from home but I packed my scales, so that’s a three pound loss for me on week three. There is a pool here so getting up early and getting some lengths in. Being away from home is difficult food wise but I’m being as careful as I can be and limiting myself to one glass of wine.
Here’s hoping I can stay the same till I get back home in 10 days.

Snowglobes · 11/06/2018 22:13

I’ve lost a bald eagle but hope to lose a 2 year old child amazing do you use a potato peeler for your courgetti? I’ve got a mandolin (the slicer not the guitar) but always scrape my knuckles and the hand spiralizer is exhausting! chocegg makes me laugh... almond bar??? It’s so much about time and planning isn’t it?!! beforelight I’m not good at planning ahead so working out s split isn’t something I do. I have a couple of coffees for b’fast so count the milk. I probably have a 300-400 lunch and then whatever’s left for dinner. If I’m slightly over it slightly under I don’t worry as it’s likely to even out over the week. I’m also guilty of eating first and counting later!
What a lovely DH you have luna mine just sits and scoffs wine and nuts and ice cream and...at the mo cheese & biscuits!!🙄

Acorncat · 11/06/2018 22:15

Definitely going to try that carbonara recipe, I need some new ideas. Fallen into a salad and meat tea everyday. On the plus side I’ve tried a few new meats and fish and found them actually ok Smile. And I tried the kale chips and they were lovely! I have a smoothie during the day, slightly worried I’m rotting my teeth sipping it all day so trying to have half for breakfast and half for lunch. It’s the only way I can get avocado, spinach and coconut oil in.

Weighed today and lost 4lbs in week 2 so 11 altogether. I struggled at the weekend though, still feeling dizzy.

Snowglobes · 11/06/2018 22:30

I had a cheeky white wine (125ml) tonight with a lot of fizzy water (400ml ish) and ice. Sooooo nice! And although seriously diluted was definitely enough of a wine taste and long enough to just want the one.

Snowglobes · 11/06/2018 22:32

Is your smoothie filling acorn and from the book?

Snowglobes · 12/06/2018 06:38

Morning! Very happy to be reporting my first stone off!!! In exactly 7 weeks. So 2lb a week average. Another stone to go so not ready to maintain or anything. Very happy with this as I’ve had some serious nights out and days off. Someone recommended ‘happy scale’ previously, which I love as it predicts your goals etc. Also great for those of us who are up and down as it shows the general trend.

Well done Snow! That's a fantastic achievement.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 12/06/2018 06:51

Sorry, posted too soon. Yes I use a peeler for the courgette ribbons. It's the first time I've done it and I think I prefer it to the spiraliser. Felt more substantial.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/06/2018 07:18

3lb off this morning! That’s mostly water retention I’d imagine after my big carb fest this weekend, but it’s still pleasing. Hoping for another sub-1000 day today. Pondering whether to eat breakfast as I’m invigilating an exam this morning and worry about my stomach grumbling during the silence, but I’m not especially hungry. Lunch is salad and roasted veg, dinner is going to be cod florentine (my own take on this!) - cod fillets, cheese sauce, broccoli/cauliflower cheese baked on top. Not sure whether it will be good, will report back.

abitoflight · 12/06/2018 08:35

Another pound off this morning so total loss of 16lbs
Leftovers from roast chicken dinner for lunch so chicken with cabbage runner beans and gravy
Tonight is salmon
I'll get in another 800 calorie day today with plenty of walking before holiday tomorrow
Does anyone else feel a bit sad going into supermarkets? Local Asda is the worst - shelves and shelves of doughnuts, cookies and cakes throughout entrance area

veryveryquietly · 12/06/2018 11:15

Hurrah hurrah snowglobes! That's marvelous!

Agree w/ shrinking - prefer using a good peeler to make courgette ribbons, spiralizer too much faffing and cleaning and I prefer ribbon texture to 'zoodle' texture. Then chop up the parts of the courgette that are left (because lots are) and roast the hell out of it with other random veg, olive oil, and random spices.

abit totally agree about supermarkets. I try to do vast majority of shop by ordering online and try to only top up from local shops when I'm not hungry. For me it's also passing the quick dinner freezer at the front with pizzas, SO tempting especially when it's been a long day. Especially when it's the £10 dinner special with huge dessert and wine included.

Had a bit of binge/fall off the BSD wagon last night: two mini-Magnum ice creams, which I haven't had in months. Felt kind of repulsed after too - the ice cream was too foamy and the chocolate way too sweet and I didn't really enjoy it. And they sure aren't mini when you eat more than one. Oh well, lesson learned!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/06/2018 11:25

Do you feel as sad looking at doughnuts and cookies in Asda as you feel trying on clothes in Debenhams or New Look?

Sorry to be blunt, but honestly, don’t mourn the loss of crap food in your life. Celebrate your new healthy lifestyle. All those people putting rubbish in their trolleys wish that they could walk by and not need them. You are one of the lucky ones.

OP posts:
Snowglobes · 12/06/2018 14:54

Oh very I love how you found the mini magnums so yuk you had 2!!! Why oh why do we do that? Is it just to double check? ABit well done ignoring the Asda donuts! I’m learning to ignore as I ‘know’ it’s not worth it!

veryveryquietly · 12/06/2018 16:37

Yes snowglobes I had to check for science's sake. Someone needed to take the hit so the sum of universal knowledge is increased. Grin

But seriously, the first was good in a 'wow I remember eating these' kind of way. Then midway through the second I realised I wasn't really enjoying it, just eating it because, well, I'd started? I don't know. But I do know now it wasn't worth it so hopefully will keep that in mind when faced with other such foods.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 12/06/2018 18:17

Another good day here. Back in the groove this week. Went to Nando's again for tea and had the same supergrain salad with plain chicken. Sparkling water to drink. Felt very easy today.

Hoviscats · 12/06/2018 18:41

i have had a good day and coming in under 800 cals. Off out now for a 2 hour walk (training for a long walk in September)!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/06/2018 19:05

I had a reasonable day, although I did eat the leftover butternut and goats cheese while my dinner was cooking (so technically had two dinners, one after the other!) but I was very hungry! Did a hot muggy 10km after work which was tough at the time but glad about now.

Coming in at about 1200 cals and higher carbs than I’d like (60g because of the BNS!) but still not horrendous.

Currently trying to tick a few yawnsome admin jobs off my to-do list, the first being sorting out a virus checker on my laptop. Kill me, kill me now.....

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 12/06/2018 20:12

Aaargh. I am DESPERATE for something bad. Help.

veryveryquietly · 12/06/2018 20:31

shrinking this is a job for cheese. Have a bit of nice flavourful cheese if you can.

ChocEggNoThanks · 12/06/2018 20:33

Had 2 low cal days 1.5lbs off today so weekend gain gone plus a measly half pound. Shape is still changing though stomach is definitely flatter!

If you want something fatty go for cheese nuts or dark choc the really dark kind.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 12/06/2018 20:33

But then I'll go over my calories! Waaaah!
