So, with BYMT auditions already underway and NYMT open for booking, it's surely time for a 2022 thread?? Who's in?

Submitted DD's NYMT actor self-tape and booked her audition today, eek! Need to also get her musician audition recorded this side of Christmas as we go on hols on 27th and she's back to school on 4/5th (PCR dependent 🙈)

Not sure really to be honest. I think getting the room all ready for a lockdown session was like a flashback to the bad old days 😂.

I just think you don’t know in a big group if you’ve been noticed with dancing etc and I think the script part he did was the shorter one so not sure he felt there was much chance to shine. What will be will be eh? I always think things happen for a reason.

Just would like to know asap so we can plan our feb half term🙂

Alakazam8 · 30/01/2022 10:32

Dd will audition next weekend. I think the showcases might open up more potential opportunities for her, that’s what I’m hoping anyway!

Biscuitsneeded · 30/01/2022 10:38

I think it's normal to feel like that @Mcmumager. DS has felt like that both years. If really pressed he can think of bits he thought went well but he has no sense of how it went overall. Having seen all 3 of last year's shows it was clear that zoom worked fine in terms of identifying some amazing talent - the casts were as talented as ever -but what we don't know is who it might miss just because they are perhaps not such big characters, or are struggling with the tech . That can happen in the room too but I think kids usually leave with a sense of how they compared to others and whether their performance was a true reflection of who they are, whereas with zoom it seems that ability to read the room is massively reduced. Hope your DS enjoyed it anyway, and fingers crossed for news before too long.

Biscuitsneeded · 30/01/2022 10:38

That's great Alakazam!

Mcmumager · 30/01/2022 10:57

It’s weird he was nervous but in live auditions those nerves are excitement to be there. He’s in rehearsals this morning then trip to Birmingham for BYMT so a week of mocks think he is shattered!

Good luck to your daughter next weekend @Alakazam8.

I hope those from last weekend get some news soon. Tx

Alakazam8 · 30/01/2022 11:09

Thanks for the good luck messages. I was really in two minds about it this year as dd found it hard last year but seems keen to have a go so will have one more try and then maybe leave it till she’s a bit older.

Mcmumager · 31/01/2022 14:05

Totally different experience for ds on the audition yesterday- loved it and came out buzzing. He’s definitely a face to face audition fan rather than online. Now firmly in the waiting room for the next month or two Wink

Biscuitsneeded · 31/01/2022 18:45

Glad it went so well McMumager. You never know, he might get good news from both!

allhailthebrain · 04/02/2022 01:18

Good luck all!

DC had the most amazing experience last summer with NYMT so is auditioning again - but unsure about the shows they have selected. So auditioning but we'll see... Also trying for BYMT for the first time and NYT. Throwing all the juggling balls in the air and see what sticks!

Biscuitsneeded · 04/02/2022 11:29

@allhailthebrain I think A Kiss for Cinderella and the touring showcase show should have plenty to offer younger NYMT participants even if the two other shows are less suitable. (Although Ragtime does have 2 small child parts). My DS is also going to have a go at NYT. He is aware that competition will be stiff! I am sure your DC will be offered something by BYMT, but will keep fingers crossed for NYMT too!

Mcmumager · 04/02/2022 13:01

Good luck @allhailthebrain. What age is your dc? There is also the workshop for NYMT too which might have younger roles.
BYMT haven’t released all of their shows yet so there might be some suitable there too. When are the auditions?

NYT had auditions at the venue my ds did BYMT last weekend- he said he should’ve did both on the same day but hadn’t applied this year. Definitely think he will do so at some point as he’s undecided between musical theatre and acting.

Anyone had any NYMT news yet? Just wish I could know one way or the other so I can organise my feb holidays!

Biscuitsneeded · 04/02/2022 13:47

My DS did the very first NYMT zoom round this year and hasn't heard...

allhailthebrain · 04/02/2022 17:21

I have a 14yo who had a good part last year with NYMT and an incredible experience, I'd go so far as to say the best time ever! The post show blues were long and hard... The friendships formed have lasted so well.

The concern is that two of the three shows appear to be for the older ones, and the one remaining is incredibly similar to the one from last year - the new musical, set in wartime etc. The main parts are all female too. After the most amazing experience last year, there's a real sense of a need to protect him from a lesser experience by them being so directly comparable. Some of the shows being done by BYMT sound really interesting and very different, hence thinking of looking at them for the first time after two years of NYMT. The loss of the 4th show is a real loss for the younger cohort so I'm interested to see what develops with the concerts etc - and he still wants to audition and see what happens.

A recall has arrived from NYT, and so it begins...

Mcmumager · 04/02/2022 17:54

@allhailthebrain congratulations on the NYT recall!

I totally understand your thinking - my son was cast in NYMT show 2020 which obviously didn’t happen but was unsuccessful last year which was a disappointment. Put in a last minute BYMT audition and ended up doing a show he loved and getting a main part and having the best 3 weeks of his life. Like your son has made some great friends and would do it all again tomorrow so things happen for a reason.

I guess there is some time to go until any results so might allow time for more BYMT shows to be released too which may be interesting. We like the sound of the educating Yorkshire which I think would suit him.

My son can only do the first two shows if NYMT and I think he might be young for chess and like you say the Cinderella show seems quite a lot of girl roles. I love the Leicester curve and think chess will be fab- will go and see it even if son isn’t in it.

@Biscuitsneeded I’m waiting for you to get a result as we are a week behind. We are planning a trip to London that week so if no recall we will go later in the week and I’m just keen to get hotel and shows booked! First world problems but it’s my birthday so being a diva!

Biscuitsneeded · 04/02/2022 18:01

@allhailthebrain I completely understand that. After my DS's first year with NYMT when he had a good part, apart from the dreadful fear of his potentially HUGE disappointment if he didn't get in again after also having the time of his life, I was worried another show and a different director, different cast etc might be a less good experience. He got an ensemble role in something that was absolutely epic and he made his little character his own, and it was very special. And since then every single show (he's done 5 in total) has been wonderful in a different way. He's had bigger roles and fun smaller roles and been the most minor ensemble member who only got in because somebody else pulled out, but I honestly think he has enjoyed every show as much, albeit in different ways. Every show they do teaches them something. Every new cast they meet contains people who become friends and from whom they learn. Like you, after that first magical year I signed DS up for a BYMT audition too because I was worried he would feel the absence of a show in his summer so keenly. He did get offered a place but had already accepted NYMT for that second year by the time he heard so he never got to do a BYMT show. Now NYMT has his heart, but I think he also knows he's been very lucky and he may not get a show this time, and he's OK with that. I'm rambling. What I'm trying to say is, wait and see.... It might turn out there's something amazing in the mix for your DC. I think the touring show could be great if the kids get to showcase according to their talent. In 2016 NYMT did a gala at the Adelphi to celebrate 40 years. The casts of that year's shows each got a slot to perform a number from their respective shows, but the bulk of the evening was performed by a core 'gala' team who had some fantastic chances to shine in fully costumed excerpts from various shows from NYMT's history, alongside alumni. A highlight was about 8 of the boys who were originally in Bugsy (including Mike Jibson and Gavin Stokes I think!) reforming to do their 'we could have been' number, and just having so much fun with their old mates. If the showcase concerts end up like that they could be very different from last year's experience, yes, but equally special.

Biscuitsneeded · 04/02/2022 18:01

Oh and congrats on the NYT recall for your DC @allhailthebrain

allhailthebrain · 04/02/2022 18:19

@Biscuitsneeded there's no issue whatsoever with a smaller part - drama teacher summed it up by saying he's proof that there is no such thing as a small part, only small actors... Being part of it is enough! It's just that direct comparison, with it being SUCH a similar show to the new one last year, in the same time period etc - and it's a lot of money if it's not going to be a new learning experience...

But very willing to have our eyes opened! So we're sticking with it and just seeing what happens. We have no idea how the concerts will be cast so it's worth putting yourself in the mix and seeing what comes.

It's very much flinging everything you have at 2022 and seeing what sticks Grin

My worry is being forced into decisions before knowing all the outcomes as the answers seem to come much later from some than others...

Biscuitsneeded · 04/02/2022 19:14

@Mcmumager if my DS hears anything I'll be sure to let you all know. I wonder though at this stage, with only one week left to go before the final rounds, whether they will all just have to hold tight and wait until after those for news.

@allhailthebrain Absolutely, the news coming from the different organisations at different times makes it difficult. I was always really glad that NYMT used to come first, as that was the outcome of choice for DS regardless of show or part, but I can see that with several irons in the fire you would wish to have all the information before deciding. As far as I know NYMT will cast first because of the Easter residentials, but BYMT are often only a week or two later, aren't they? NYT of course don't communicate decisions until May. But I agree, going for everything and waiting to see how it all shakes down is all you can really do at this stage!

allhailthebrain · 05/02/2022 01:17

@Biscuitsneeded ah is it? I think the problem is I have no experience of BYMT and I'm going by the experiences of this thread last year - and none of that was typical! I would love to be able to decide, should two offers ever be a reality.

Of course, no offers at all could also be a reality, so we'll wait and see :) For now, there's a first round to get through this weekend...

Mcmumager · 05/02/2022 11:13

Good luck to those auditioning this weekend

Biscuitsneeded · 05/02/2022 12:26

Good luck to everyone this weekend!

Alakazam8 · 05/02/2022 18:59

Dd had her audition this afternoon. She loved it and it sounds like they are looking for a big cast for different things this year. Back to the waiting room!

minimits · 05/02/2022 19:56

DS also had his this afternoon-also enjoyed it but can never tell how he’s done on zoom. Hope we find out soon!

Alakazam8 · 05/02/2022 21:00

@minimits glad he got on well. They remembered dd from last year and were lovely. She got so much from today I’m not really worried if there’s nothing for her this year. She’s still young and will keep trying but they did make it sound they needed quite a lot!

Biscuitsneeded · 05/02/2022 21:13

How lovely they remembered your DD @Alakazam! She must have impressed them last year. So glad to hear she enjoyed today's audition. Fingers crossed for some news before too long...
