Thought I'd start a thread now that the shows have been revealed. Who's got a DC or student applying? I have a feeling in my bones it won't be my DS's year this time - he's nearly 15, voice not broken but not reliable either, and apart from the one show we don't know I can't see anything he could obviously do! But he'll give it best shot and if no luck we'll still watch the shows. Good luck to all!

Thanks @Biscuitsneeded. My DD is 16yrs and seems to have fallen into that awkward in between age category this year. Its okay though as its a big school year with her doing her GCSEs in May so it would probably have been a bit hectic taking time out at Sevenoaks in April this year. Bigger picture and all that :-)

folkmamma · 03/03/2020 17:24

Well we have just had the most wonderful email!!!!! DD has just been offered ensemble in Imaginary!! Someone must have turned it down!!!!

Belshels · 03/03/2020 18:24

Amazing news Folkmamma! What a rollercoaster you have had! We are also waiting for BYMT results too...

Lonecatwithkitten · 05/03/2020 20:30

@folkmamma congratulations to her.

minimits · 05/03/2020 21:19

Oh wow folkmama! Somehow missed this amazing news! You and DD must be over the moon. So pleased for you x

Triflefan · 06/03/2020 14:12

That’s so exciting! @folkmamma

What’s everyone doing about fundraising?
Whilst contributions would be most welcome of course, I’m finding the idea of DS asking for money so he can go off and have a merry old time for 3 weeks quite uncomfortable!

Triflefan · 06/03/2020 14:13

The email suggested fundraising was expected

folkmamma · 06/03/2020 14:57

We have to @Triflefan as we earn too much to qualify for a bursary but all our disposable income is tied up with her training elsewhere. So I've written to a few local trusts (and been successful, thankfully!) and we will be starting a gofundme campaign. DD will be doing some busking too.

I believe BYMT news is starting to come out btw.... I've heard of one success so far. Good luck to everyone waiting. I can now share that we were told last week DD is going to be offered a musician place on Goblin Market! But felt I needed to keep it to myself until results were starting to come out.

Triflefan · 06/03/2020 15:04

@folkmamma

Ours is too!
I’m just not very good at this stuff and end up feeling awkward 😩
We will be on beans for 6 months 😆
I said he should babysit but he cant really do anything until he’s out of his final GCSE
I might contact a few local organisations and see if they will be willing to contribute

Triflefan · 06/03/2020 15:22

@folkmamma

Congratulations to your DD on Goblin Market too

folkmamma · 06/03/2020 15:26

Thank you! Still waiting for news on one other potential exciting opportunity before we know exactly what her summer looks like, but let's just say I wish I was 12 again!!

Another couple of points on fundraising... the charities commission website has a search function that is useful if you're prepared to put some time into tweaking on the 'advanced search' options.

Also, a friend of mine recently did an easy fundraiser - a simple 100 square. Literally numbers 1-100 on a grid sold for £2 per square. She then did a live draw on Facebook and the winner got £50. Raised £150 in a couple of weeks.

Biscuitsneeded · 06/03/2020 16:06

Triflefan, I completely get what you're saying and I feel/felt similarly. The first year DS got in he had really just gone along to the audition for something fun to do and we totally weren't expecting him to get in. It was also a pretty lean time financially for us. I overcame my distaste and we did a crowdfunder then and people were amazingly generous - I think it IS a big achievement and people do recognise that - and he was 10 years old so going away was seen as being quite brave. Apart form family we didn't expect anyone to chip in with more than a fiver but some people were incredibly generous. However, since then I have felt I really didn't want to ask again so DS has done various things. He's washed cars (if your DS goes to theatre school or anything he could ask if he could be in the car park one weekend to do that if the school was willing to advertise it to parents). Last year he and 2 friends held a big 2nd hand book sale at his theatre school - made about £300 between them. (It did require a certain amount of parental input....) And his theatre school principal was amazingly generous and raffled a week's holiday course and gave them the takings to share between them. If your DS has local support it's worth asking if there's anything he can do. It's also the case that while lots of kids have to and do raise the money (and if you google NYMT Gofundme you will find several kids doing exactly that), there are plenty of others whose parents are able to pay for it and do, so there's no shame in not fundraising if one doesn't need to. NYMT ask them to fundraise for the bursary fund too - DS and I gave a small percentage of what he'd earned/been given to the bursary fund and I made up the difference.

Triflefan and Folkmamma congratulations woo hoo! So pleased for you.
Dd also got a place at BYMT for the Michael Morpugo ine Why The Whales Came. Xx

folkmamma · 06/03/2020 19:47

Fantastic @Belshels !!! Congrats to her 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Lonecatwithkitten · 06/03/2020 20:00

@folkmamma @Belshels @Triflefan congratulations on your BYMT. DD got the reserve list this year, so we are still waiting. Hopefully she will get a place.
NYT we don't hear from till 6th May.

folkmamma · 06/03/2020 20:57

Hopefully a place will come up for her @Lonecatwithkitten - I expect there is a fair bit of movement once offers go out and dates are known as they don't seem to be as clear about project dates as NYMT so I'm sure lots of people get offers for things at times they are already committed elsewhere...

Nodressrehearsal · 07/03/2020 06:36

Congratulations folkmamma a double place-will your DD be able to do both? What a great position to be in.

folkmamma · 07/03/2020 08:30

Thanks! Yes, very exciting - one as an actor and one as a musician so best of both worlds! And timing wise she can do both (although we will definitely need to fundraise). Just waiting on this last decision to come in before we can accept GM though. As that could be a game changer...

folkmamma · 07/03/2020 11:32

@paddleroundthepier and others waiting for musician outcomes... any news??

Paddleroundthepier · 07/03/2020 16:04

@folkmamma - had an email on Wed asking us to confirm which of the 4 productions DD is available for as they were allocating shows for musicians this weekend. Hoping this means she’s in the ‘long list’! She can do 3 if the 4 as she is involved in something else. Now anxiously refreshing emails!

Stringchild · 07/03/2020 16:32

Also had the musicians email which we assumed meant dC has made the list - we can only do two shows so not optimistic that our dates and the instruments they need for each show will match

folkmamma · 07/03/2020 19:44

We had that email too! So I queried it as we'd had the Imaginary offer by then. And it seems they are still thinking about offering her a musician place as well.... can't quite believe it tbh. Still, may not happen as she can only do 2 of the other shows and she's already super lucky to have what she's got.

Fingers crossed for everyone still waiting x

Triflefan · 09/03/2020 09:44

@Biscuitsneeded
and everyone else who commented!
I’ve discussed it with a friend who does a lot of fundraising and we feel there needs to be some value offered for anyone who donates anything for DS.
A plan is now in progress!
Good to hear the musician offers are now coming through.
It’s quite hard to plan summer until our children’s timetables are finalised 😆
DS has just backed out of an opera he was supposed to be involved with this summer in favour of NYMT so it’s a real juggling act.
They were absolutely fine about it and really pleased for him.

Triflefan · 10/03/2020 06:46

Did everyone see the Coronavirus statement from NYMT on FB?

Triflefan · 10/03/2020 06:47

I’ll try that again
